We have been having a lot of questions regarding the update for our 2011 Xperia™ phones to the new Android 2.3.4 version. And we are happy to tell you that today we announced that the 2.3.4 version of Gingerbread platform for all the 2011 Xperia™ Smartphones will start the roll out during October at select markets.
Some of the features you will get from this update are:
Google Talk with Video Chat for smartphones with front-facing cameras
Updated Facebook inside Xperia™ functionality for enhanced like, share and discover abilities. We have talked about Facebook inside Xperia™ on previous posts.
Xperia™ smartphones introducing world’s first 3D sweep panorama functionality powered by Sony.
The software upgrade will enable consumers to turn their Xperia™ smartphone into a mini-mobile PC by connecting USB peripherals (mouse, keyboard or game controller) to Sony Ericsson LiveDock™ multimedia station. Connect the smartphone to a TV via HDMI to get a big screen experience.
Swipe text input – text input by swiping the finger from one letter to the next
Screen capture – allows the user to share a screen grab from anywhere in the phone

So, finally "real" OTG support (still via LiveDock but that's a plus too).
Hope they'll keep up with Ice Cream too
I was just about to post it here

3D sweep panorama! Nice ;D
And OTA update to 2.3.4! That probably means we won't lose our root
I don't think we will get the camera update too because they are meant for the 8mp exmor cameras not ours :/
We dint even get digital zoom in the recent updates when the arc got it

yeahh.. lots of new features.. can't wait for this update..
Wish I could get excited about this but you know Verizon is never gonna give this to us.
Maybe I'll root it however I'm not a fan of rooting a device I rely on to function properly 100% of the time. Thats why I have a nook running CM7 that I screw with.
I was wrong :O
The new xperia neo V just released and it possibly has the same 5mp camera as in the play so HD video recording might be an upcoming possibility and if we get panorama means we no longer will have the stock android camera App
Sent from my R800i using XDA Premium App
I would like to know, will PLAY's released after October have 2.3.4 on them or will they have 2.3.2?
Also if they have 2.3.4, will it still be possible to unlock to Bootloader and flash a rooted ROM?
All the best,

Old stock will still have 2.3.2, new stock will have whatever it had when it left the factory.
Why does this matter?
Whatever you get, simply plug it into your pc, update via PC Companion and you have the brand new official version.
No PC? Simply update OTA for the brand new version.

I believe the current method is to downgrade to 2.3.2 then flash the new firmware, then update OTA. (dont quote me on that)
I havnt done this though, but i know it is possible. Just read some other threads to how to do it and you can get it done.
Careful not to brick your phone, a bit of reading is required

Neo definitely has 8MP.
EDIT: Oh no... after more research the Neo V definitely has 5MP
Things I noticed with the Neo V -
Camera
3D sweep panorama
5 megapixel camera
16x digital zoom
Auto focus
Face detection
Flash/LED
Front facing camera (VGA)
Geo tagging
HD video recording (720p)
Image stabiliser
Red-eye reduction
Scene detection
Self-timer
Send to web
Smile detection
Sweep panorama
Touch capture
Touch focus
Video light
Video recording
Video stabiliser
Connectivity

So note how they say "HDMI support" and "TV Out". I am hoping this is only needed via a software update.
I also found it interesting that they didn't include a Micro USB > HDMI cable in the box...
Also the Bravia Engine was an update that the X10 got so we might see that on the XP as well.
Yeah! Finally ab offcial Screenshots function for Xperia Play without root

Unless they give us Play users the same camera software most of the other Xperias have, I seriously doubt we will get the pano functionality.
...seriously, even the Xperia Mini Pro has better UI software for the camera than we do!

Well if the Neo V has the same camera as the Play then you would assume that they are cross compatible.
I always questioned why the put the Neo in direct competition with the Arc...
One is slim and sexy and the other one is frumpy and ordinary looking yet both had exactly the same features.
They are probably recalling all the Neo's and replacing the cameras and putting V stickers on their boxes as we speak.
I guess this phone has some kind of 3D capabilities, that's why it has 5m camera.

It hasn't been discovered yet, neither announced by SE, about which I am surprised, but here's the breaking news!
With 2.3.4 update for Xperia PLAY, the stock camera app now records 720p with continuous autofocus!
Sony Ericsson has really made alot of improvements in the 2011 Xperia series via their updates
P.S. Waiting for the R button capture app to be updated!
I hope it is true.
the ROM and the update has been live for days now, can anyone confirm this? i can't since i'm waiting for OTA
Wheres the source for this info?
I pray this is true, please someone confirm this, I bin waiting for the official UK release but if this is true I'll flash the Nordic version.

It may not work properly
im gonna test on the autofocus and the R button app now
The camera app mod for Xperia play which takes pictures by R button does not support HD recording and focus in video. I meant it should be updated. It works like the old one.

This is 100% true, I tested it myself on my Xperia Play
1280x720 @30 fps on the stock camera app smooth and clear!
There is no source (about which I'm surprised), but that's true.
@brochador, I know, there is no harm to speak to a bigger audience, all these threads were related to the update
What are the video size options in this update?
@brocha
at least OP didn't have to start a new thread.

will wait for the update via air then..
I don't get it lol I just tried the video camera and it didn't look hd.

I took a test video and uploaded it for all to see...I'll do a longer one tomorrow, but yes it's HD, 720p, confirmed.

OTA!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait!
is OTA available for uk generic (rooted)?
thanks
not yet.. I'm on UK generic.. i guess it will take a month before it becomes available via OTA since it will be available first via pc companion..
Android 2.3.4 official it's available since saturday here in Italy, but....no 720p recording and no sweep panorama, what the hell?!?!?
Do u guys have the 720p recording from a rom custom or official update?
Yeah its has 720p HD. But in camera app settings it says High quality not HD
My Xperia Play R800i is running 2.3.4 and it has continuous auto focus and has 720p recording.. I upgraded officially and then rooted with zergrush method
they didn't give us the botton to switch the iso
how can they treated us like this
i just had have high expectation on them, now i'm so disappointed
and how's everyone's thought of the new camera apk
the size of those photos really improved, but i just can't distinguish the 2.3.4 & 4.0.3 's photos which has the better resolution
ISO switch is either not implemented in camera driver or the sensor simply doesn't support manual ISO switching.
Do you mean that the sensor itself doesn't have the ability to be changed its iso by user?
Correct.
The camera performance is better after the ICS update, though the JPEG compression is still aggressive and that's never something good. I mean, zoom in after you have snapped one picture and the loss of details is horrible.

The Exmor R sensor is improved and newer on the Xperia S, that's why it supports the manual ISO-feature, specially camera driver softwarewise, compared to the Arc S.
It sucks though that the macro mode is removed, Arc S macro setting is one piece of fantastic eyegasm on real close-up shots!

how about video recording ?
I noticed they are so laggy, already you can find some tests on youtube made by an italian forum boy.
it's a bug i think, ram management isn't releted to video recording, and in ics the system could be slower, but the cpu is the same and the gpu also
so, why not smooth video ?
I had high hopes that ICS will improve the camera, these reports are a big dissapointment.

Sent from my LT18i using XDA Premium App
The camera performance is not good on my Arc. I'm hoping it's because I'm using Arc S software on my Arc but the ISO seems to be locked on crazy high.
Looking back at pictures taken on 2.3 seems to be most commonly between 80 and 160. On ICS it's defaulting to the region of 320 with the lowest I've managed to get it being 160 (and that was using night scenery mode) and sometimes going up to ISO-800 taking a normal picture indoors in descent lighting! Something dodgey is going on here.
Someone needs to somehow come up with a fix to sort out it's mental auto-ISO settings.

Truely, when I was recording the car's movement,I could easily find it moved not so smooth just like there's a traffic jam
And I was surprised to know that the frame is only 26fps
Hope Sony rectifies these issues and fix them in upcoming ICS update for Xperia arc

Sony Officaly realesed the AOSP 4.2 For developers, Almost everything is now working including sensors, the only problem right now is the NFC; Otherwise, the realese is stable, fast, smooth and pretty much perfect. Let's try it guys and c what we can do...
Currently, the majority of the features on the Xperia Z are working in the pure Android environment. There's SD card support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and LED light as well as the sensors are all working well. The camera is also working flawlessly, but its code is tested internally at the moment as it requires proprietary binaries that the company can't publish right now.

I think you'll find the camera isn't working - it's only working internally at Sony as it's using their own proprietary binaries. They're not being released at this stage.
Quite why this is, I don't know, as I think Sony have shared their binaries in the past with the FXP and CM teams.
Wrong forum, only post in development forums if you have an actual development, please ask to move this to general or delete it since there already was a post about this in general.

Really, Samsung don't have it, LG don't have it either. Or has that changed?
sony wouldnt implement it in its camera firmware anyway, but i was hoping that at least they would include the support for it for 3rd party camera apps, but acordingly to xperia blog, all features are disabled.
This is a shame really, sony ****ed up big time. Galaxy s6 has RAW option, manual focus, manual everything, and all this in the default camera app. You can go even further and use 3rd party apps that have more features.
we cant even get away from the mediocre camera results from sony now, this is sad.
i expect that they implement some of the advanced camera api features from lollipop on Z4, so soon or later it would be ported to z3 series, but this is just a speculation by me.

No, we can't because the camera binaries for the Sony Exmor IMX220 camera sensor have to support it and the only phones to use this sensor are the entire Sony Z Series and the Meizu MX4.

meh,
because YOU want RAW doesnt't mean other want it, 99% of customers don't care about RAW so don't say stupid things.
Would have been nice to have to play around with and to show off to my iPhone friend . In the end it all depends on your point of view. Compared to smartphone camera a few years ago the Z3c is amazing. I've made some beautiful shots with it. And compared to a "real" camera all smartphones are garbage (except maybe Nokia?).
So for me the camera is perfect. I don't want to make a photography album with my pictures I want to have a quick shooter to capture some memories. And with the auto mode and the dedicated button the Z3c is exactly what I need.
It's frustrating because the camera hardware in the phone isn't being utilized to its full potential. Yes, it's fine for the average user, but for some, and I think many on this forum share this mindset - we try to get the most out of our devices. Not tapping into our camera's full potential is like leaving our device unrooted - it's neutered.

The main difference between the S6 and the Z3 being that the S6 is running Lollipop out of the box, where the Z3 is running Kit Kat. Implementing the Camera2 API is a lot more work than just porting the legacy firmware on Lollipop. That's why all OEMs chose to port their old firmware and stop here.

Yes, buy a Z3!
the sony camera app is build and copyright by sony! there is no legal way to get this app without buying the sony phones.
The sensor is pretty good, but the software is pretty bad. The sensor is also capable of filming slow motion @ 120fps, but the slomo feature is definitely not filming at 120 - hope there's an alternative to use this feature correctly
