USB external hard-drive - Acer Iconia A500

Hi, I purchased me A500 yesterday and put a external hard drive onto the Iconia now some of the files appear and are watchable, others are not even showing up or are not viewable. So I was wondering am I doing something wrong? is there a 3rd party application I should be installing?
Thanks

I stuck a FAT32 formatted flash drive on mine and used ES File Explorer to find the contents in /mnt/usb_storage.

I should have mentioned my iconia is not rooted

Es file ex is working for me.I am rooted though

You don't need to be rooted for ES File Explorer unless youvwabt to use the root explorer feature.
Anyway, Android cannot read NTFS or exFAT file systems, the two most common file systems for external drives on Windows based computers. You have two options. First, you can find a utility to format your external drive to FAT32 (the same file system that USB flash drives typically use), but that erases all the data on the drive.
the second option is to download and install Drive Mount on your Iconia. It will allow your tablet to read NTFS file systems.

I have a 32Gb Transformer with HC 3.2 and there is no Problem with NTFS. All my externel Drives are formated in NTFS and i can watch movies, listen to music and can read and write all my files.
In my case Android Honeycomb is working well with NTFS formated drives wihout installing any apps like "Drive Mount"

Yeah I've heard that before, and I'm not sure if Google added support for NTFS in 3.2 or if it's unique to the Asus build, either way it doesn't apply here.

I bought mine with HC 3.0.1 an NTFS was working since first start so maybe it's Asus related.

Must be. I didn't think the Transformer had a full-size USB port?
Is it in the keyboard dock or or do you use the mini port as a master port as well?
Or am I just crazy and wrong about the Transformer lacking a full size port?

It's in the keyboard dock.
And Drive mount won't work without root because the OP said that he doesn't have root. So the only option is to use FAT32 or to root and go from there.

Even if you get the disc reading in Android, what are you going to play the movies with? I don't know of any DVD playback software for Android, though if there is something that can do it, please direct me!
I have tried every possible player on market....none of them play video_ts...!?

So have you actually managed to see the drive? I connected mine and it doesn't show.
I think a generic driver from linux must be ported.

Dvd drives are used for many things here... not just for video... but for data transfer..
I too have my whole music collection backed on DVDs and a lot of clips and pictures from parties and trips.
I suggest we start a new thread that isn't spammed by thick headed people.

Honeycomb 3.2 : Reasons to update

Just a short list of pros to update to 3.2:
Pros
1. Better/smoother/faster landscape animation rendering. (Portrait rendering is still slow and laggy)
2. Can now access external SD card along with internal memory when tablet is plugged into a PC via Micro USB.
3. Native support for NTFS formatted USB storage devices (external hard drives and flash drives)
4. Better 720P video playback (less stuttering and juddering). You still see a little but much less than before. (Use Freemake video converter for all your video conversion needs)
5. Overall improved system stability.
6. Now feature for zooming phone optimised apps to fit on the larger screen instead of just stretching it. (kinda stupid once u really use it)
Con
1. Not able to root (as yet
If you have any more say if its a pro or con and then add it.
Heya,
You SURE you can't root it? Reason I'm asking is cause I have an A100 with the 3.2, and I rooted it quick and easy. I know it's a different model, but they shouldn't be THAT different, eh?

how did you do that?
Nope, The official stock 3.2 rom for A500 can't be rooted for now.
There's also a new locked bootloader which makes *harder* to revert to an old rom / flash custom rom
Just google "root A100 ADB"...
Basically I just uploaded an SU file to the root of the storage, went into the Terminal, instead of going through ADB and wrote a couple of lines. Took 5 mins.
Now as I said, I'm not sure if the same method can be used on the A500, but I guess its worth a try.

heres a con: a rooted 3.2 build from teh A501 has all those benifits plus root.

AFAIK the bootloader for A100 and A500 is different, so rooting is not the same. Anyway I just flashed a rooted near-stock ROM cooked from the official A500 Acer update.

I agree with all but the first one.....the potrait mode has improved a lot and is quite fast.........also the orientation change speed has also improved but still needs a lot more.....

Having NTFS support was the whole reason I rooted 3.1. If that is in 3.2, then I don't need root right off the bat.
Finally got The OTA 3.2 update here. My initial opinion is that its way faster and smoother than 3.1 ever was. Scrolling and swiping is a lot more fluid. The zoom feature for apps is something I can take or leave, I haven't really found a use for it yet. Losing root sucks, but all I was using it for was to swap out boot animations, so I can live without it for a while until some enterprising soul figures it out. Overall though, I gotta say its a fairly large improvement over 3.1.
anyone know if USB file transfer works with Macs yet? can't believe google was stupid enough to release Honeycomb without that working.

I think you can just replace CM7 kernel with my CM7 kernel release. According to one of the people who tested it, it worked fine for him. I'm not sure though since I'm not inclined to use it. I'm one of the few people who like the carousel.

great
wait the new cm7 kernel release
A bit of bad news. I tried enabling the OHCI and EHCI options but couldn't get it to work or rather, whenever I enabled them, the display won't start. All it displays is a blank screen. There's even no backlight turned on. I'll have to investigate this later.
On the bright side though, mass storage is enabled now. Have no way to test this though so I'll just get it out there later.
Hey, any new updates on this?
Anything I could do to help?
KF community would win a lot with OTG working.
I had a crazy idea that would depend on this. I have a spare webcam from my HP DV2880 and as it's pretty small, and usb, with otg working, I think that would be possible to try to make it work as the camera device. It probably draws very little power and with proper modules could work.
I'm willing to spend some time to try as soon as otg is ready!

I'll take a crack on it this weekend. I've been too tired to solder the needed USB cable after work.
O man....the kindle fire just gets better and better!
This would be beyond amazing for me, as the space on this device is such a limiting factor. Allow me to connect my USB drives and I'll be more than happy!
Dslrs
I would be especially interested in getting DSLR Controller to work on the kindle. Would look really great on top of a video rig!
If USB host mode gets enabled, would it be possible to use a Bluetooth dongle with KF or would it require additional development?

New Owner with checklist ...am I missing anything? Recommendations are welcome

Hello all!
So I am getting the Note on Tuesday or so and this is a list of things I will be getting with it.
#1 Blue Galaxy Note (of course)
#2 2 cases
#3 2 anker batteries
#4 charging dock
#5 screen protector
#6 SANOXY Micro USB Host Mode OTG Cable
#7 EXPANSYS MHL microUSB to HDMI Adapter
#8 HDMI Cable 2M
# 9 RII Mini Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard
And I think that is it for now. I will be using a PS3 controller for gaming and the mini keyboard would be nice to use also with my HTPC.
Then on the software side, it is currently running CM9.
From what I have read flashing from recovery with CM9 is no problem...correct? Or do I still want to use Odin, etc?
I just hope my emulators are all working
And I hope Netflix TV out also works as it never worked with my Captivate. I could do others but not Netflix.
Any recommendations or suggestions are welcomed.
Thanks!
Maybe you want to get a longer micro usb cable. The one that comes with the Note is awfully short.
Good one. That indeed is something I did with my Captivate. Is this a normal usb I can get locally ?
And from whom you will get all this? Nice package btw...

Looks like I made a stupid move by asking the other user to flash CM9 because I just read the CM9 log:

USB OTG doesn't work
MHL doesn't work
So two cables I wont be able to use right away.
I guess its time to start reading up on what I can use to get those working.

What you need is a cable usb type a (ordinary usb plug) - micro usb. You can get any such cable, it's not necessary that the cable meets any specific requirements.

Mass Effect Infiltrator Compatability

OK so I read in a few places that there is a way around the fact that mass effect infiltrator isn't compatible with the Asus Tf101 it involved deleting a file that will bypass the warning that says that the app isn't compatible with the device. but this doesn't seem to work for me can anyone shed so light on a real work around or why it wont work?
I was able to get Mass Effect Infiltrator compatible with my TF101 simply by installing a custom ROM: EOS4 (on build #103 now). Seems it's because EOS4 has the device name listed as "Asus Transformer TF101" instead of the old Stock ICS "TF101"
