Hi all,
I recently bought a samsung focus through ebay but the phone was stuck in demo mode and I wanted to get rid of the demo.
What I have done is: I flashed the phone with the XENJK1 rom for omnia 7.
now the phone works perfect except these problems:
"down" volume button increases the volume instead of decreasing it.
"up" volume button does not do anything at all.
back button sometimes does not work
start button is not working at all
the accelerometer orientation of the screen is opposite than it should be!
any one got any idea how to fix these?! please!
Sounds very much like flashing i9000 Galaxy ROM to AT&T Captivate. The hardware of these two phones are slightlydifferent. There is no way unless you can hack the ROM to fix those issues. On Captivate (Android), ppl needs to mod the ROM (called re-orientation) before apply to the phone. Hope you're good at modding WP7 ROMs.
I have no experience in hacking wp7 roms but I will give it a shot if you could tell me what tools I need for it.
I don't know how to either. I don't believe anyone knows how to (check the Focus Dev forum and you will see). So, basically means you're SOL.
FYI: demo mode = stolen AT&T display phone.

Many people spent $200 at least to get demo mode focus but had no idea of demo mode. Don't tell me they should return their phone to AT&T.

yes and that was their stupidity.... ebay... id returned it and gave the seller horrible feedback plus reported it to ebay as stolen... craigslist...their stupidity of not making a call with it before you bought it period..... and as for they should return it... well if it ever by chance got caught by at&t...they could and i guarantee would prosecute... it is stolen property... im no goody goody but i wouldnt chance my reputation over a freakin cell phone... i mean if someone stole your phone wouldnt you want it back? someone walks through my door and says i found this or i got this from someone and saw your info in it ...id give them the benefit... if i found it in someone's posession and it was mine...im prosecuting to the fullest extent... plus this is federal... its a fcc licensed device.... so stupidity is no excuse for keeping something you either knew when you bought it was stolen or just found out and said well i paid 200 for it its mine... sorry its the property of at&t... hope you go to jail... over a cell phone.. that would be embarrassing...
ps who knows at&t might give you a reward...

In many places, buying a stolen good is illegal as well. I have no sympathy for those who purchase stolen goods, knowingly or not.

I am returning the phone and already opened a case on ebay. Hope there will be no problem because I installed an other rom to the phone in order to try and get it work properly. I haven't realised that it was stolen obviously since now! I also requested a full refund. any other suggestions what I should do?

You guys totally went off track on what the op was asking and gave him no useful advice, he didn't ask for your sympathy, he asked about what to do. The commentor about I hope you get prosecuted blah blah blah, you have no clue about law and it is not a federal offense because it is FCC approved, car radios, iPods and all electronics that have radios or receive signals are FCC approved and are not federal offenses if you are in possession of them if they are stolen, go back to law school. In regards to editing the rom, good luck at this point wait for the update and flash with Odin. Now that's a Canadian answer some advice on his question, not some ignorant American answer about guns, laws and whatever else you guys could throw in.
I like the guys anamocity towards anyone talking about the demo mode phones. I buy and flip phones on ebay and craigslist, have gotten demo mode phones before, and am offended that you would go so far as to insult anyone for making the mistake of buying one. You do not have to flame to express your strict opinion of the law and what one should do with something they spent lots of money on. Just my two cents kawgi.
What a gem!

Does the Zune software see your device as a Focus or Omnia 7? If there's a registry key that identifies your device that can be changed, you might be able to get the next Focus ROM flashed on your phone through the update process.
At least your phone works. That's a far better situation than most people conned into buying demo phones.
zune recognise it as OMNIA 7 unfortunately.. and I don't have the required software knowledge to mess into the registry so I have the phone dusting in my office..
Worth trying

Actually, it may be a good thing.
It might be worth trying to find a reg key that can be changed to identify your device to Zune as a Focus. Assuming the Nodo update is a complete flash followed by a sync (which I believe it is, though, I'm not certain) you may be able to get the Nodo update for the Focus.
Probably a long shot, but not too much work and nothing to lose?
I will give it a try then.. but I doubt that the nodo update is a complete flash so even if I manage to make zune recognise my phone as a Focus (still no idea how to do that) it won't do a thing..
This is funny as hell, I suppose you guys have never used a copy of Microsoft Windows as well, right? some friend gave it to you (maybe even a relative), Gosh I sure hope you ratted on your sister for that copy of Windows!
This is the problem with America today, its turning into a society of rats! You cant even have cheats on console games anymore , you can have achievements ,whoopty do , not the same thing , I suppose if you open the xbox ,the FBI will be searching for you! Yes this topic got way off base!
Good luck finding a rom for your phone!

That would be why folks are coming down on this thread about using a Focus that was in "DEMO" mode.
I am no expert at phone hacks and such, but it seems completely logical that you could perform some things in diagnostic mode + registry changes to fix all of these problems. Just dig to find and learn how to do these and i believe you can do it.
i have unbearable static on my hd2. i sent it to htc repair 2 times and they never fixed the problem. i cant use this phone if it keeps getting static. is there a way of eliminating the static? if not, then i'll have to sue htc for failing to repair it since they havent lived up to the warranty.
Static as in you can't touch the phone as it shocks you or static as in when you're around electronics, they'll make a static sound over your phone?

static as in static noise. everytime i call someone, theres always static noise. and whats really idiotic about htc is that the repair rep told me that they always test out the phones after they "repair" it. what a joke!
Ok everyone, i got the phone yesterday again from htc repair. and guess what? the phone is still NOT REPAIRED. whats wrong with htc? its been twice so far that i sent in the phone. and they didnt even replace it!
i told the lady rep this morning that they didnt repair it and that its been twice that i sent it. at this point i told her that i'll send the phone in a third time.. but that i better get a replacement or i'm suing.
You'll spend more on a lawyer, paperwork, and the effort in proving that *Your* phone was the problem (and not your provider).
That being said, when it comes to a faulty product that's still under warranty, you'll get more 'flies with honey than vinegar.' Stop trying to threaten them with lawsuits and just keep sending it back till either they send you a working model, your provider stops sucking, or they offer you a refund or another phone model.
Customer Service reps hear "IZ GONNA SUUU!" all the time, and they stop trying to help you the minute you say it. My advice? Stop saying it and keep working the system to your advantage.

no, no,.. suing a company in small claims doesnt require a lawyer. if the cost of the phone doesnt exceed a small claims minimum, like $2,500 in nyc (depending on your state), you can file a claim in small claims.
its obvious that you dont know business law. i'll explain. since htc didnt fulfill the warranty, which has been passed to the new owner (me), they are obligated by law to repair it. by law, if a company doesnt satisfy warranty, the injured party has grounds to sue. a warranty is a business contract between parties. in this case, htc broke that contract.
and i'll threaten htc as much as i want since i have that right and dont need permission from you to do so. your tactic of keeping to send back the phone until htc wakes up doesnt work.. it hasnt worked in my case. and why should i waste my time constantly sending in my phone? only cowards do that. believe it or not, customer service exists to lessen the risk of litigation.
my advice? stop defending the company and defend the victim. it looks like youre a fan boy. drop the htc ass kissing and open your eyes.

Have you ever tried to load HSPL onto your phone to change the radio-rom? Different radio-roms perform differently; some will not work well in your particular location, which could be a reason for static in your calls.

Hey koolxx to change the SPL on your HD2 to HSPL you need to download HSPL 3 or HSPL 4 by DFT. Depending on if you ever want to try to install a NAND Andriod ROM or Window phone 7 is the only factor in deciding wich one to download. HSPL 3 only goes up to HSPL 2.08 wich is what is needed to flash MAGLDR to your HD2 as MAGLDR only supports up to HSPL 2.08 right now. HSPL 4 goes all the way HSPL 3.03 but it is only good for flashing custom Windows Mobile ROMs and deferent radios right now.
After you have made your choice and have down loaded one of the HSPLs. Turn your HD2 off and then hold down the volume down button and tap the power button but continue to hold down the volume down button. This will bring up the bootloader (tri color screen) when you see bootloader you can release the volume down button. Once in bootloader connect your HD2 to your computer via USB cable and wait for the Serial in the white bar at the bottom of the phome screen to change to USB. When you see USB then you can run the utility by DFT for HSPL. The DFT utility will ask you what version of HSPL you want to install choose either 2.08 or 3.03 depending on your personal wants or needs as stated above. Also make sure you select HSPL and not SPL (hint you don't want one that has four zeros at the end). You should see a screen saying we hacked it when the HSPL is sucessfully installed. To check and see if the HSPL is installed simple cut your HD2 off and put it into bootloader and it will tell you your SPL or HSPL also you should see by Cottula in bootloader if you have HSPL installed.
One last thing though. I think you said you are in NYC so you should have a TMOUS HD2 (T-Mobile HD2) The TMOUS HD2 is not like it's EU cousin. It can not be flashed with any old radio version. You have to use a radio version that has a 50 in the third set of numbers example 2.15.50.14 notice the position of the 50. If you flash a radio version with a 51 in that spot it will brick your HD2. As all rules go just about there is an exceotion to this rule. Do not use a radio version that has these numbers in it 2.04.50.xx or 2.05.50.xx as they were used in the test devices for the TMOUS HD2 but also used in regular HD2s as well so they will also brick a TMOUS HD2.
Hope this helps you out koolxx.

Note: flashing HSPL voids your warranty. If you're planning to send it in for further repairs, be aware that you'll have to remove HSPL and restore your phone to a stock SPL+ROM+radio combination before doing so. Not that difficult, but does add some extra work.
Also, at the risk of being labelled a troll, fanboy or HTC employee: either sue HTC or don't, but just threatening to sue will get you nowhere. Do you honestly think anybody you may have talked to actually cares? No matter how pissed of you might be, remaining calm and friendly will get you much better support.

Yes koolxx flashing HSPL will technically void the warranty on your HD2. But if you still have to send it in to HTC all you have to do is run the HSPL 4 utility by DFT to revert it back to the original SPL. You see the HSPL utility by DFT allows you to pick what version you want to install inckuding stock SPL versions too. So you are good to give it a try if you want to try a different radio but if it does not help make sure to reflash the original radio you had and then remove HSPL before sending your HD2 back in for repairs.

yeah good suggestion.. but i already know the legality surounding my issue. and i got a friend who's a commercial lawyer and hes giving me some advice which is positive. and hes also told me that hes seen hundreds of cases where average people hurt by the injustices of big companies, successfully sued these big companies and won.
sharing my story here is like a release for me. and will likely get others to be aware of how these big corporations act. thanks for the heads up.. i wish i didnt have to go thru legal channels since i love this phone, but htc forced my hand. well, htc will bite the bullet big time.
Doubt that htc will even feel anything of your lawsuit, unless you live in the USA. Overthere, some judges make the most random verdicts.. Furthermore, if no real physical harm has been come to you, the phone producer will most likely have to give you a symbolic dollar or at best, a new phone, and you will end up carrying the costs of the trial, because even if you win, you won't gain a thing, might lose more.. But you are free to try, I'm interested you got my attention. From my personal advice, I would advise you not to.

i dont care if htc will feel anything about the lawsuit or not. who i care about is me, the victim, not htc, a rich company. and i live in the usa. and i dont know where youre from, but in the usa, a warranty serves as a legally-binding contract between buyer and seller. this gives the injured party rights that im sure dont exist in your country. you dont need physical harm to sue, so i dont know what youre talking about. in my case, htc broke the law by breaching the warranty by not repairing the phone.
and, if you really were interested in my issue as you mentioned, you wouldve read the part where i said that suing anyone in small claims court doesnt require any fees outside registration fees where in nyc is $20. i wish you did some research before making a claim about something you obviously know nothing about.
and from your post it seems that consumers are powerless to corporations in your country. i wish your people werent so scared of corporations. i'm not. i understand theyre powerful in your country and wield a lot of power. but i wish you could take legally take a stand against their injustice. i guess i'm VERY lucky living in the usa where we have laws that offer consumer fairness that underdeveloped countries lack. and i wish you werent so negative.

Try and trace the owner or hand it in would be a good start.
Trace the owner, and if you cannot find them, hand it in to the nearest police station to where you found it.
Alternatively contact the carrier who can trace the sim number or mobile number of the phone and find the owner.
keep it, if you drop yours you have a spare one ,
unless the owner calls the phone. than you can give it back >.>
If you dont hand it in you will probably find the IMEI gets blocked by the carrier when it gets reported missing, so wont be of much use as a phone anyway.
Hand it in, if it was your phone I am sure you would wish for the same.
shouldn't be too hard to trace the owner, so do it.
If you can turn WiFi and gps on and leave the phone powered on (Samsung dive) else turn it in.
Step 1: Check the call log and call one of the numbers the person dials often. That's sure to be a friend/family member of the person.
Step 2: Tell them you found the phone and let them put you in touch with the owner.
Step 3: Return the phone to its rightful owner.
Step 4: Enjoy the boost in Karma.
The owner uses Samsung Dive and is tracking you right now. It's a guy, he's 6'4," 250lbs, and read this thread on XDA. Now what are you going to do
I don't understand the question. Is that just me?
There's only 1 thing to do, and that's ring someone (as suggested above) and return it to its rightful owner.
Edit: Alternatively, check the email address of the owner and get in touch with them that way.

What ever you do, never hand it to the police. it will end with them. This should be the last option If all the others don't work. Better it ends with the rightful owner as first option or you as last but one option.
What would you do if you found 5000 dollars on the floor? Hand it to the police? If you can't trace it, they can't.

Now morally, thats a different matter.

I agree with OrionCarl in this case. Just because you find something doesn't mean it doesn't belong to someone else. Keeping it when you know that it does is the equivalent of stealing it.

If you hand it into the police (At least in the UK) after a period of time, 4 weeks or something, it legally becomes yours if no-one claims it and you can go and collect it
Hand it In its being tracked
Not only that, but a local mobile network operator have no right to say you can keep a phone that does not belong to you, just because it was lost
Only the police can do that, and only after they try to find the rightful owner / give them a chance to report it lost and have it returned

Wipe data & system and install a new rom via Odin and you're done.
Wipe data removes 99% of tracking apps, wiping system removes the rest.
Use a custom recovery and delete everything than use a custom rom/kernel and flash modem/bootloader files too via odin

not quite
It is traceable via IMEI.
But someone who lost this phone (apparently it looks like this) and phone was bought on contract, there is huge possibility that someone will block IMEI on network provider. After that 2 ways left. Sell it to foreign country or use it w/o mobile network.

Maybe someone used this phone for criminal purpose and that is the reason of smashing it?

And that has something to do with him because ... ? phones don't comit crimes, people do. Let's say police was tracking a phone for some reason, once the criminal sells the phone it will be tracked for an X amount of time until police knows for certain the buyer doesn't have anything to do with the seller. Anyway more than 50% of phones out there have been used in... unapropiate way from prank calling to showing the latest vid of a gf to your friends (and you know what I mean by prank and vid).
Let us not make any more of what it is: a found phone, repaired, end of story. Nobody will come after it and if it does you can show the owner the receipt for spare parts. If he is as honest as wanting his/her phone back at least they can pay for repairs.
Just use it if you really wanted to... The authorities aren't gonna bother raiding your home and arresting you and stuff just for the sake of a lost phone. So just use it normally. If they blocked it then fine just use it as a gaming device or multimedia device. If someone tracked it then give it back to them and charge them the cost for fixing it. If it really came into accusing you of stealing(which has 0.1% chance of happening) then dare them a lie detector test.

Agree! Just wanted to underline that there is no point to thinking 'what if'... Because we can get a really paranoic point such as cospiracy theory or something else...
Use it as long as you can and want.

Hey guys.
So, the worst case scenario seems to be playing out with my phone, and Samsung & the retailer are turning into villains. I've had my phone maybe 8 months, I flashed root to it in the first week. This is the stock firmware, just with root access so I could run Titanium Backup. The phone was working fine, had recently started to become a little bit chuggy due to lots of apps & data, though yesterday I opened a link from a friend which looks like it's killed my phone. I was in the middle of doing my Japanese lessons with Duolingo... received a Whatsapp message from a friend with a link to a sale ( I could post the link, but spam filters might block it)- the moment I opened the link in Chrome my phone had a heart attack. Froze, rebooted... but worse, the boot animation also froze. I tried the power reset (volume down + power button), and managed to get as far as the lock screen. Upon entering my PIN, the phone went black and it has been a brick ever since. I took my phone to the shop I bought it from this morning and regret being honest about having root access. I cannot possibly fathom how having full access to MY DEVICE could possibly kill any hardware or disable the device to this degree, and as such think this warranty voiding angle is a giant scam.
This post is seeking a few things... 1) sympathy (lots please).... 2) advice about warranty (are they within their rights to deny my warranty? I'm in Australia, imported phone) ... 3) How could this happen?!?!?!
Please, thanks, and woe is me....

It depends on how you rooted but guessing as you rooted when you first got the device it probably tripped knox and voided your warranty... either way by the sounds of things you can fix this yourself by flashing official firmware with odin do you know how to do this?
In fact can you get into recovery mode?
while the phone is off try holding power button + home button + volume upfor around 10 seconds (this does not require the boot animation to load)
If you can do that use the volume keys to navigate down to "wipe data and factory rest" then navigate to yes and after that reboot your phone (might take 10 mins to boot) but should fix your problem

For a moment I was excited to get a reply, and then I read yours. Please read my post before replying. If I could flash anything or get any kind of response do you think I would have taken my phone in for repairs??! It's DEAD. They changed the battery, the display (so they tell me) and they like to refer to the remainder as "the motherboard" but they mean the whole damn phone... Can anyone report if this has happened to them? Seems so thoroughly weird.... and to blame it on the fact I have root access.... the same as thousands of others.... it's really dodgy.

Oh no... you're going to keep that awesome advice to yourself? Maybe someone else can suggest I try turning it off and on again?
Seriously- it's frustrating enough being put through the wringer of losing a device like this, and even moreso being held over a barrel by Samsung & the retailer. I'm doing my best to be clear and spell out my situation, in the interests of not only myself, but the whole Samsung community. When you're locked out of a device by design, and all you can do is press buttons in certain combinations, please assume that I meant it when I said I already tried pressing the buttons.
More frustrated. Thanks. =)

Come on, dude. I/we know the frustration of things like this but that's completely uncalled for. He offered genuine advice from the information given in your post.
I hope you get it sorted but I doubt you'll get much in the way of helpful responses if you are this rude.
It is completely within their rights to deny you warranty. You rooted the thing. The very act of rooting voids warranty. And yes, complete access to the device can do that to your phone because any rogue app can delete system files/programs that are essential to running the phone, or even turning it on. As it is, suck it up and accept you lost warranty and pay for the repair or get a new phone.

what whatsapp message could do that much harm and has that done any harm to your friends (rooted) phone?
I think that after the freeze the phone has become damaged in software
Could be that it happens with any application that filled the memory.
If nothing can be saved with any trick and you have done everything I'm afraid there is nothing more possible than all the "tricks" here on XDA that are available after a good search.
Succes

If u cant get into Download mode, then the people at service centre also cant
Go to a different service centre and play dumb. Just say that 'The phone stopped working when I was travelling. I dont know what happened. The phone just died'
Dont give anymore info than this. If u do then they might pin it on you
Just play dumb and deny everything lol
They cannot prove that the phone is rooted just by looking.
In your case the motherboard might be fried (IDK maybe) and if they replace motherboard then ur knox flag will be reset.
Visit another Service centre. Dont go to the same place again.

There was recently a ruling in the States that returned some rights to consumers to unlock their devices while keeping warranty. In Australia we have some pretty decent consumer protection laws. http://ausdroid.net/2012/10/22/warranties-and-bootloaders-what-you-should-know/
You're not showing an awful lot of compassion to the community of developers who spend their time trying to root phones... too bad if your phone dies? nice.
I suggest you read this.
http://www.samsung.com/au/support/warranty/
From the read of it. You have already violated 2 things.
1.Your phone was imported.
2.Modification(in this case root)
Also, if you think software can not kill hardware then you are wrong. Some hardware are also being controled by software. Of course something like the glue holding the display together come off is definite not caused by software but something like fried mainboard/electronic is possible.
Of course, this seem very unlikely in this case but still not impossible. If you still want warranty, you must prove yourself innocent enough for them to accept your claim which seem nearly impossible.
Also being honest about rooting when claiming your warranty will instantly have your warranty rejected, no question asked.
Well, you can still try using the customer right law or something like that to help you, if you don't mind wasting time.

Unlocking and rooting are two different things. Compassion? What are you talking about? Just accept that rooting voids warranty. Rooting opens the phone to exploits which may or may not cause problems. The manufacturer has every right to deny you service because they cannot prove if it is a fault on their part or yours. If you a friend bought an unrooted phone from you and roots it and bricks it, would you take back the phone and give him a new one free of charge? Or would you shoulder repair fees for your friend? No. Same thing. If you accidentally drop your chicken on the floor, KFC won't take it back.
There is consumer protection, and there is abuse.
And I appreciate the rooting community, but understand and accept the fact that doing so voids my warranty.
If my phones dies? I pay for the repairs. Simple.

So I take it that there's a way around knox to root the phone without tripping it? I've got the Exynos variant of this phone, would you mind putting me in the right direction on rooting it? I've looked everywhere but never found a way that does not trip knox.
