Is my G2 the only faulty one? - G2 and Desire Z General

First of all i love this phone to death
But theres only 1 problem
When im in low signal areas and i hold the phone on the bottom left with my left hand, it loses signal, kinda like the problem with the iphone 4
But when i release my hand from there it gets signal again
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App

You're covering the antenna. It's not "the problem the iphone 4 has", it's the problem all phones have when you cover the antenna. They lose signal. It's just easier to notice when you have a lower than usual signal to begin with. (or in the case of the iphone 4 its easier to cover an exposed antenna.)

Trying different radio version may give you different result...

What do u mean different radio vearsion?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App

There is a firmware called "radio" that handle all radio connection of the phone like 3G, Bluetooth and WiFi... this firmware is available in several version. You can find them in the Radio Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970809

Uhh, if hes asking what we mean by different radio version, perhaps it wouldnt be wise to get him to flash a new radio. Could potentially brick his phone if hes not careful.

Most phones do that if you cover the antenna. If you slide out the keyboard and hold it normally, you'll also lose your wi-fi signal.

Just an fyi flashing radios is one of the safest things you can do. Since it goes through the bootloader there a few failsafes built in. People have tried purposely to brick there phone that way so they can send it to tmobile and no one was ever able to. Flashing things through fastboot is safer than crossing a street.

Lol yeah i dont even know how to root :/
But does changing the radio give a stronger signal?
I could find someone through classifieds to do it

dont worry about it. Changing your radio will not in any way make up for the fact that when you physically cover the antenna your signal deteriorates.

Think of your antenna like a flashlight. Cover the bulb and you get no light. Same concept, cover the antenna and you get no signal. Changing the radio MIGHT do something, but no software can overcome a hardware handicap. Since you dont know how to root either, id recommend staying away from anything related to modding your phone until you're ready.

Yes i know covering it will result in a weaker signal, but i had a htc snap before, and i tried covering it on purpose, it would never lose signal
But this phone -_- grrrrrrr

Different phones have different antenna positions, and they also report signal strength in bars differently.

ports on back of phone?

does anyone know what the ports are under the battery case: R1, R2/g, W1, W2
I figured they may be the antennas ....just not sure which is which.
trying to boost my reception and hoping one is for that.
thanks
Don't plug anything in them. The last time I did that it stopped the antenna from working unless something was in there.

Best guess would be radio shack or best buy. I had a quasimo(sp?) Laptop for a few weeks that had a port like this, came with an external antenna...clipped right on. Didn't help -much- with wifi, id assume the same for other bands. Sold the laptop or id try my self.
Also someone said in this or another thread about the ports that they tried an antenna and they couldn't get signal back after disconnecting.

are you referring to the 2nd post in this thread.. or did someone else besides that person claim the signal didnt work?
not sure why the signal wouldnt work unless they used the wrong adaptor.. or broke the fitting.
id assume id need a special 2.6ghz antenna since id want this for wimax? and i guess just try each port to see which gives me better signal? is there a diagram anywhere thatd say what each port was for?
My guess is that they are voltage testing points for q/c.

yeah i kinda thought that as well.. either testing point or antenna.. wish i knew for sure. kinda weird there'd be 4 testing points tho? and still left on the device for production? idk..

Nah aparently there's a switch in some of those that disables the internal antenna to use th external one. It was on an exclaim tho so I might be wrong.

Evo poor WiFi

First off let me say I love my evo. It's the best phone I have ever used to date. that being said is there anyway to get better WiFi reception performance out of it. My wife dumped her evo in favor of the LG optimis and loves it. It's a great phone just too small for me. But it is kinda sad that it gets way better WiFi reception then compared tomy high end evo

Sorry I don't have an answer but I'm guessing there are some tweaks out there that a developer thought up. Not that I've done it yet, but have you 'Searched' here on the forum?
The closest I have come to a fix is to watch the way you hold the phone. I think the wifi antenna I locate down by the kickstand. If I hold my EVO in the most natural and comfortable way, I am covering this area with my left hand. If it move my hand up a bit and hold the unit more towards the middle or top it will pick up 2 or even 3 bars more off my N router. I know this stinks A La iPhone but I figure there are so many ways to cram this many circuits into a device this size. Better wifi than cell signal I guess.

I have a launch day EVO (hardware version 002) and my wifi reception absolutely SUCKS! My father and stepmom both have EVOs that they received later (not sure on the hardware version they have but I assume 003 since their lcd screens look different) and their reception is much better. My suggestion is to return it. I don't ever really use wifi so it doesn't bother me, but nothing I have done has helped reception (ie, root).
Mine is also a launch day EVO. Hardware version 00002

Hardware version 0004 here and my wifi works pretty well but like another poster has mentioned watch how you hold the phone. It will definitely affect your reception.

Liked: mainly the radio was better, I've always have better signal with an HTC phone. And the kick stand...
Dislike: the phone is fugly! I hate the outside it is hard to hold! Sense is terrible I couldn't use it!!! Also the half hard half soft button thing pissed me off, it also made the phone useless. I didn't want to use it because of that....

This phone is definitely worthy. I had the evolte before this and it was just boring and multitasking was TERRIBLE. This phone also has better signal reception. The evolte would also reboot all the time while in my pocket when i would crouch it would hold the power button down causing the phone to reboot. I cant tell you how many times that happened to me it pissed me off so much. This gs3 is just amazing you feel like you cant put it down. As far as screen goes saturations are opionionated but for me its this simple led > lcd. Led is the latest technology and thats why i choose led.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
I have both devices and prefer the S3. The only thing I hate about the evo is the multitasking but even then some roms have alleviated this. I like the look of the EVO but if you have big hands, the EVO is slightly narrower than the S3 so it can be quite annoying to hold. Development should be great on the S3 and it is an all around awesome device to go with. Sense isn't all that bad but it is more of a hog compared to touchwiz.
The screens of both devices is basically up to the individual to decide which they like best. Colors definitely pop on the samoleds but the lcd2 is also quite the looker.

Went to bed.
Woke up with only 3g working and nothing else. No calls and no sms.
Flashed a bunch of ROMS again including factory stock and no dice.
Spent 3 hours with Sprint Customer Service and they could not figure out why my phone cannot make calls or send sms. Kept activating and programming my phone with zero result
When making calls I would get "error 16" and the "your account could not be validated"
Please help! I am ready to sell this phone because I don't know what else to do.

You'll have a problem with any phone. From what I hear the EVO reboots often but the SGS 3 is more fragile and doesn't have as much standby as EVO LTE does (Although it's very close in comparison.)

[Q] Loss of Service issue? A GS2 ghost!

So I've been having this problem since I got the S4, and Sprint continues to refuse it exists. It's very similar to the Loss of Service issue that the Galaxy S2/Epic 4G Touch was plagued with. The issue is consistent from the initial GS4 I received to the refurbished device I just got a few days ago. Basically the mobile network service drops, but the data stays enabled and functional. It's incredibly random, and the only way to reverse it is to enable and disable airplane mode. This is a problem for many reasons, the most obvious being that if I'm not aware of it dropping service when it's in my pocket or not on me, I could be missing important calls/texts and the battery drops like a rock. I attached a screenshot of the No service icon being displayed with data still active. Right after taking the screenshot, I opened up the FB app and everything loaded, as well as browsed a couple of XDA threads quickly to make sure I wasn't going crazy.
I am currently running MF9 stock with Agat's latest release, and the MF9 modem obviously. The issue is consistent with the stock kernel, completely unrooted stock system, as well as the MDL software (I tried running MDL for a little bit while I still had my first GS4). Any input is appreciated, or any ways to troubleshoot the issue. Thanks in advance!
Its not that bad. I've had it happen about 3 times since I've own the device. June 1st.

Yeah it's not the end of the world, just a bit of poison in my eyes. I have it happen fairly frequently though, maybe every other charge cycle it happens, and sometimes multiple times per cycle. Do you find it happens when you have low service? Almost like the mobile network gets very faint, it drops for a second, and then the phone can't grab back onto the network for some reason.

That's it for me, it will happen about once every five hours if I'm moving around a lot in very low service areas (one bar, 1X). It's not as bad as it was on my E4GT, where it could happen at any time.

do you live in a low service area? i mean really as a sprint customer (ex-employee) we have all had drops and los at one point but to say its a device issue is absurd....if your in an area where on average you get 1 mabey 2 bars of service your going to experiance this alot more than others as you live in an area where the towers are spread farther apart. each tower has and average radius of 7 miles (this can vary....hence the use of the word average). so if for instance you are moving out of a towers range....lets say your at 6.8 miles from the nearest tower and all of a sudden everyone around that tower decides to call their grandma and you dont have a tower close enough to jump to then guess what..... if you experiance this with multiple devices in the same area then its obviously not the device itself, there is a factor that your not considering that is probably a huge reason why you experiance this. for example if you live in a freaking house made of iron and concrete (dont laugh ive taken this call more than once) or if you live in an area of extreme geographic variation.....look at your surroundings.....hell you may have a shopping center between you and the tower and that could even cause it. this is an amazing phone with some of the most hightech and up-to-date hardware avaliable for mobile devices i just dont see why people continue to blame it for ****ty service. a great tool as a sprint customer is to look at the coverage in your area coverage.sprintpcs.com. also (cause i know your thinking it) voice and data (contrary to popular belief) on the sprint network do not run at the same frequency. they do however run on such a similar frequency as to make calling and data at the same time virtually impossible (unless on 4g or wifi) and that may be why your able to obtain a data signal while loosing the signal for making voice calls....because they are differant. also my spelling is horrible so dont judge me lol im just trying to give insight to your problems and trying to help the next poor rep you get on the phone from hearing the same story they hear all day long.
I wonder if there's an app, or it can be made in tasker, something that checks to see if you have connection. If it doesn't see service after a pre determined amount of time, it cycles airplane mode on then off.

Thank you for your input. The area I live in has great coverage for the most part, data isn't the fastest but the signal strength is overall pretty good. There are poor spots of course but considering the geography of my area it is good. And just so you know, I don't call and whine to the customer service reps about nonsense, I have more common sense than to expect cell service in a bunker. Speaking of that, I do have an airrave at home and the phone does the LoS thing while connected to the airrave. And it was proven that the GS2 had software issues which caused the LoS issue, so its possible the same can be said for the GS4.
I'd be interested to see about a script that would toggle air plane mode...hmmm.

This would explain the los even on the airave as well. Granted those moisture sensors can sometimes be a little sensitive but with what you described It could be an insight into a deeper problem.

Most certainly agree with you, only problem is that I have received a replacement since, and the problem still exists. If I hadn't gotten a second phone with the same issue I wouldn't have bothered asking in another thread, I really thought maybe the moisture in the old phone was the issue . Sprint tells me my area has "some of the best coverage in the nation" which might be exaggerated but it is still good coverage.

Yeah I do have the same job, but for the time being I've just been leaving my phone in the truck so its not exposed to the moisture. As for my set up, currently running stock rooted with agats kernel, but I've tried 100% stock for a while before and it still did it, as well as a few other configurations and its consistent. I actually have to knock on wood, it didn't do it once yet today, although I did lose data several times but that happens with sprint no matter where I am. Honestly I feel like its a problem I may not be able to fix, unfortunately the troubleshooting options are very limited.

well if its loosing signal and then not picking it back up it kinda sounds like a faulty antenna.....its hard to say with out a diagnostics hooked up to it but even if you take it in your unlikely to get a straight answer. if it is infact a hardware issue the only ones capable of fixing is manuf.(sprint will just pass it off or make up some reason for you to file a ins claim) from what you have told me it sounds like your in a normal setting. do others in your area that have sprint have the same problem?

Nah not to my knowledge... I have heard of very few cases of the same issue only with the S4 but I guess sprint/Sammy won't recognize it until there are more people with the issue. And yeah just like you said, sprint gives me the runaround when I call them and the guy in the store does the same thing, says his hands are tied cause usually they do whatever they can. I am grateful they got me a refurbished device for free even with water damage though.

yessir thats what they do.....well if it truly is a hardware issue with the s4's i hope you can get some light shed on it soon so you dont have to deal with anymore. I remember it from the s2 days and it was definatly annoying at best. but hey look on the bright side.....at least you aren't having menu wakes like the s2 did. my only advice i can give is just try different combos of roms, kernels, modems to see if you can find one that may at least somewhat mask the issue. unfortunatly if its hardware thats failing then its only going to get worse and worse.

signal drops if i touch my G2

Either you have hands of lead or there is a problem with your network.

I refuse to believe it's the phone's fault since you said you had the same issues with the S4.
Really ? You're going to call and complain to the operator about it ? What are they gonna do ? Come demagnetize your body or something ? lol

XDA has become a place for assholes to hangout, over sensitive little pricks that help no one.
Do you have a case on your phone?

Check actual signal numbers in status, not bars. They are finicky.

Thanks.. its good for the XDA Reputation..why we should donate btw?
Now,ontopic.. no case on the phone.
Settings/signal:
In my hands (or someone els his hands) i get -85 dBm 16asu (in the bad areas it go's to -105 dBm)
Not in hands i get -78 dBm 16asu
Nobody knows a answer
The best thing would be to get more than one phone and test it a bit. I really can't give any better advice :/

I agree. Not all answers u get are helpful.
But your reaction is uncalled for, abusive and unnecessary.
It tells me more about you.
In this case there is no clear fix. Since it has been said, that 2 phones have this problem with 1 person.
Maybe its bad luck with phones.
Maybe he is too statically charged or something.
But in anyway, there is no need for this. Its especially annoying to me when it includes people who are in this community longer then u and contributed so much more.

Actually, i had the same thing at first. And it started getting worse after i flashed cm based roms and i had no idea what was causing it.
Then i took of the back cover with a removing tool and noticed how the antennas where set up.
Tip, dont hold your hand or fingers near the top right corner. If i'm not mistaken that is where the gsm antenna is located.
At least the signal doesn't drop completely anymore for me now.
Oh and i get better reception with stock LG rom.
Ps: if i'm wrong about the antenna placement then I'm truly sorry, just trying to help.
bro you have superpowers
Do you wear a lot of statically charging materials? Wool, certain synthetics etc? Just guessing really
