[Q] Loss of Service issue? A GS2 ghost! - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

So I've been having this problem since I got the S4, and Sprint continues to refuse it exists. It's very similar to the Loss of Service issue that the Galaxy S2/Epic 4G Touch was plagued with. The issue is consistent from the initial GS4 I received to the refurbished device I just got a few days ago. Basically the mobile network service drops, but the data stays enabled and functional. It's incredibly random, and the only way to reverse it is to enable and disable airplane mode. This is a problem for many reasons, the most obvious being that if I'm not aware of it dropping service when it's in my pocket or not on me, I could be missing important calls/texts and the battery drops like a rock. I attached a screenshot of the No service icon being displayed with data still active. Right after taking the screenshot, I opened up the FB app and everything loaded, as well as browsed a couple of XDA threads quickly to make sure I wasn't going crazy.
I am currently running MF9 stock with Agat's latest release, and the MF9 modem obviously. The issue is consistent with the stock kernel, completely unrooted stock system, as well as the MDL software (I tried running MDL for a little bit while I still had my first GS4). Any input is appreciated, or any ways to troubleshoot the issue. Thanks in advance!

Its not that bad. I've had it happen about 3 times since I've own the device. June 1st.

Yeah it's not the end of the world, just a bit of poison in my eyes. I have it happen fairly frequently though, maybe every other charge cycle it happens, and sometimes multiple times per cycle. Do you find it happens when you have low service? Almost like the mobile network gets very faint, it drops for a second, and then the phone can't grab back onto the network for some reason.

That's it for me, it will happen about once every five hours if I'm moving around a lot in very low service areas (one bar, 1X). It's not as bad as it was on my E4GT, where it could happen at any time.

do you live in a low service area? i mean really as a sprint customer (ex-employee) we have all had drops and los at one point but to say its a device issue is absurd....if your in an area where on average you get 1 mabey 2 bars of service your going to experiance this alot more than others as you live in an area where the towers are spread farther apart. each tower has and average radius of 7 miles (this can vary....hence the use of the word average). so if for instance you are moving out of a towers range....lets say your at 6.8 miles from the nearest tower and all of a sudden everyone around that tower decides to call their grandma and you dont have a tower close enough to jump to then guess what..... if you experiance this with multiple devices in the same area then its obviously not the device itself, there is a factor that your not considering that is probably a huge reason why you experiance this. for example if you live in a freaking house made of iron and concrete (dont laugh ive taken this call more than once) or if you live in an area of extreme geographic variation.....look at your surroundings.....hell you may have a shopping center between you and the tower and that could even cause it. this is an amazing phone with some of the most hightech and up-to-date hardware avaliable for mobile devices i just dont see why people continue to blame it for ****ty service. a great tool as a sprint customer is to look at the coverage in your area coverage.sprintpcs.com. also (cause i know your thinking it) voice and data (contrary to popular belief) on the sprint network do not run at the same frequency. they do however run on such a similar frequency as to make calling and data at the same time virtually impossible (unless on 4g or wifi) and that may be why your able to obtain a data signal while loosing the signal for making voice calls....because they are differant. also my spelling is horrible so dont judge me lol im just trying to give insight to your problems and trying to help the next poor rep you get on the phone from hearing the same story they hear all day long.

I wonder if there's an app, or it can be made in tasker, something that checks to see if you have connection. If it doesn't see service after a pre determined amount of time, it cycles airplane mode on then off.

Viperboy had a mod/script on the epic touch that did this.

I've had this happen in bad service areas for sure. International roaming in native coverage also. Enable it and go with it lol.

Thank you for your input. The area I live in has great coverage for the most part, data isn't the fastest but the signal strength is overall pretty good. There are poor spots of course but considering the geography of my area it is good. And just so you know, I don't call and whine to the customer service reps about nonsense, I have more common sense than to expect cell service in a bunker. Speaking of that, I do have an airrave at home and the phone does the LoS thing while connected to the airrave. And it was proven that the GS2 had software issues which caused the LoS issue, so its possible the same can be said for the GS4.
I'd be interested to see about a script that would toggle air plane mode...hmmm.

I do remember the gs2's los issue but I have yet to see that on an s4 other than what u have described but since replying to this post I have also read your other post about your phone having moisture in it.......I mean water of and kind in any form does not play well with electronics.....could be your having hardware malfunctions because of the amount of moisture you are getting in your phone.....I just haven't seen this as a known hardware or software issue on this device so there has to be an external reason why its happening to you. This would explain the los even on the airave as well. Granted those moisture sensors can sometimes be a little sensitive but with what you described It could be an insight into a deeper problem.

Most certainly agree with you, only problem is that I have received a replacement since, and the problem still exists. If I hadn't gotten a second phone with the same issue I wouldn't have bothered asking in another thread, I really thought maybe the moisture in the old phone was the issue . Sprint tells me my area has "some of the best coverage in the nation" which might be exaggerated but it is still good coverage.

right but you havent changed jobs have you? have you subjected this replacement phone to that same treatment? all it takes is once.... you know? im not saying your not running into a hardware issue or even a software issue. are you running stock everything or are you running a rom and custom kernel? is your setup the same as your last phone? have you tried a different setup to make sure (only if your running custom sw)you still using that same case thats trapping the moisture?

Yeah I do have the same job, but for the time being I've just been leaving my phone in the truck so its not exposed to the moisture. As for my set up, currently running stock rooted with agats kernel, but I've tried 100% stock for a while before and it still did it, as well as a few other configurations and its consistent. I actually have to knock on wood, it didn't do it once yet today, although I did lose data several times but that happens with sprint no matter where I am. Honestly I feel like its a problem I may not be able to fix, unfortunately the troubleshooting options are very limited.

well if its loosing signal and then not picking it back up it kinda sounds like a faulty antenna.....its hard to say with out a diagnostics hooked up to it but even if you take it in your unlikely to get a straight answer. if it is infact a hardware issue the only ones capable of fixing is manuf.(sprint will just pass it off or make up some reason for you to file a ins claim) from what you have told me it sounds like your in a normal setting. do others in your area that have sprint have the same problem?

Nah not to my knowledge... I have heard of very few cases of the same issue only with the S4 but I guess sprint/Sammy won't recognize it until there are more people with the issue. And yeah just like you said, sprint gives me the runaround when I call them and the guy in the store does the same thing, says his hands are tied cause usually they do whatever they can. I am grateful they got me a refurbished device for free even with water damage though.

yessir thats what they do.....well if it truly is a hardware issue with the s4's i hope you can get some light shed on it soon so you dont have to deal with anymore. I remember it from the s2 days and it was definatly annoying at best. but hey look on the bright side.....at least you aren't having menu wakes like the s2 did. my only advice i can give is just try different combos of roms, kernels, modems to see if you can find one that may at least somewhat mask the issue. unfortunatly if its hardware thats failing then its only going to get worse and worse.

Goodbye Galaxy S

I have finally sold my galaxy s i9000 today....
After about 3 weeks of using the device and having all the problems with the phone i decided to sell it.... although the decision was an easy one because it was easy to sell the phone at a profit since actually there are high demand for the phone and limited supply.... i guess most people still dont know about all the problems that this phone has.....
at my age, 36, i dont wish to spend too much time trying to fix the phone like applying rom, fixes, firmware etc.... i just want a smartphone that works well out of the box....
so after so many problems i experience using the phone i decided to sell it....
problems i faced:
- GPS very inaccurate and sometimes cannot lock signals and shows me in different country.... not to mention it cannot track continuously....
- Phone hangs when i am in a conversation and another caller comes in....
- quite frequent lags that sometimes can only be fixed by restarting the phone
- email apps takes long time to load the contents
- GSM signal quite erratic, phone must be held certain way to avoid drop in signals.... just like iphone 4 but maybe not as severe.... i am not sure....but it bothers me because i can see the signal dropping 2-3 bars when i hold it certain way
-keyboard which i just cannot get accustomed to, i dont know if its a problem of the touch screen sensor which is not precised or because of the size of the device that is a bit too wide....but the bottom line is that i find myself making lots of typing mistakes when using it one handedly
- overall samsung touchwiz quirks and the widgets are not to my liking....
- firmware fix update for my asia pacific region doesnt seem to come along fast enough... i only see one update which is the one thats giving me all the problems mentioned above..... but i see the european firmware gets update very frequently.....this makes me mad.... but the bad thing is that even the european updates seems to be still having most of the problems, especially the gps problem....
so after thinking thinking thinking... i sold it.... and i sold it after only 30 minutes of posting my advertisement in internet....
i just thought i'd share my experience......
youre the first people who dissapoint about this phone AFAIK
so how much did u sell this phone?just wanna know
I don't have any of those problems, neither do a lot of other people. Still on the stock ROM, no tweeking, nothing.
You should have asked for a replacement phone first before getting rid of it. By the looks of it there's a dodgy batch of them.
strange thing is we all want the best but its never good enough, I mean if any phone comes out and all is great people still want more and ways to better it, its human nature I guess and yes its a pain now and then but the strange thing is there is also a joy/kick out of things like roms, to get these small/big changes and play around with them, its true we can all say that it should come out and be 100% of what people paid for but......well never going to happen, and where would the fun be if it did lol
GPS I see people on about this, where I live it (north uk)tracks me from 20 meters to 2 meters (down to speed)

Are you saying you never experience *ANY* lag on your phone? This sounds very strange to me, as the lag problems seem to be an inherent problem of the phone's hardware/software architecture. I can hardly believe what you are saying, or maybe you have just not used your phone intensively enough. Otherwise me and a LOT of other GS users can get ready to return their phones for a replacement.
I can understand your frustration, widjaja. The lags are very annoying, and I myself have encountered times where I got an incoming call which I simply could not answer because the phone was too busy loading the friggin' call interface. It is however clear that Samsung themselves will come with an official fix for this, and in the meantime we have the homebrew fixes. For me, this is enough reason to stick with this phone until it is fully ridded of its problems. After all, apart from the buggy annoyances, it is the most powerful Android phone out there.

the touchscreen sensor is perfectly calibrated and the swype-keyboard (is this the one your talking about?) is the best thing invented since touchscreens were invented. the tutorial takes 4 minutes to go through and i never want to go back now. this isn't just a productivity enhancement this is the path from "oh **** i have to answer this mail with my crappy phone keyboard" and "yeah let's write the last couple of mails on the subway then i'm home earlier".

well there's literally hundreds of widgets to choose from and although i know you want it to work out of the box that's something you need to do for yourself as samsung can't do it right for everybody.

well i'm feeling you especially with the new firmware seemingly creating more problems than it solves. but when comparing the release date of the phone with the release date of the new firmware my assessment is that samsung is on the fast side with this one. but i'm not very experienced with the company so maybe i'm just a lucky samsung-beginner

like most ppl on these sorts of threads say, most of us have had NO problems, mayb a few stalls 5-10 secs on apps.
your 36 and expect a device with this spec to be perfect.
if you want something that performs out of the box perfectly, get a nokia that only makes calls mate.
to be honest if you dont even know you can change touchwiz just by downloading an app you shouldnt have a smartphone anyway

No disrespect to OP but... yea
No phone is perfect thats a fact. I have minor issues with my Galaxy S but there are ways around them, i know you said you didnt want to mess around with it but why did you buy an open source device with huge custom ability. I love the fact theres alternative for everything, i have custom keyboards, custom home screens, gmail email app of which i have 0 problems with the gmail account, everything loads in an instant.
I dont use GPS so i can't comment but i would have recommended a factory reset if you had these problems from day 1. it fixed a lot of peoples minor quirks.
I do get a little lag here and there but its bareable until an update comes out and from what ive been reading about the unofficial firmwares they are speeding up considerably.
wow if the SGS i9000 is bad for the OP, then he should never buy a Windows Mobile nor iphone based device as those are even more horrible. (that's exactly the reason why i moved to Android phones)
it'll probably make sense to just go back and use a normal 9 buttons cell phone to avoid any problem at all, then you'll have a cell phone that is good at what it does and not a multi purpose entertainment device with a build in cell phone.

Email - No issues, I can open an email, delete it, open another one and reply in a few seconds. I don't get the "10 seconds to delete an email" issue
GPS - Accurate to 12-odd feet, the occasional spaz out to 200 feet for a fraction of a second, but that's it
Menu - no lag issues, the odd stutter where it takes maybe 1/4 a second to show the transition animation, again, barely noticable
Apps - Other than "Zombies Live!" which is slow as hell, I don't get any unresponsive screens when apps load or quit
If you want I will make a video tomorrow. I am going to an airshow in the morning, but will make it when I get back in the evening.
Have to agree with extraordinary sluggishness despite battery pulls turning off animations etc...

Out of curiosity.. XDA is a developers forum (hence the name).. Why would you hang around if you just want an out of the box experience??
Welldone widjaja, i totaly agree with u, samsung galaxy s, what a pile of crap, i got rid of mine (at times i felt like smashing the pile of crap with a hammer or throwing it out of the window) i know have a dell streak and i couldent be happier

anything that runs Windows Mobile is a piece of crap, else i wouldn't have switched to an Android phone. That Dell Stinks, it's even bigger and more cumbersome than the HTC Athena
Widjaja you're not alone, i've experienced the exact same problems. It almost felt you were talking about my handset.
This would really be the best handset if it wasn't for the issues you have mentioned, really.

This guy brings up good points, products should always work flawlessly out of the box. And for your situation, not wanting to tinker, its probably best to replace your phone with something simpler (aria). On the other hand, a few software fixes that are already out address all these issues and make this phone, the best on the market.
Gl with your next cellphone purchase.

So I ordered a replacement vibrant because of GPS anyone else?

Just curious if anyone else has and what was there results with the gps like whats the usual accuracy with the new phone when driving etc I will be getting my phone next week and let you guys know
I'm confused, sorry. Did u sell your vibrant and order a new one? Because I've complained to T-Mobile and they aren't going to offer me a replacement. What do you mean you "ordered" a new phone?
They are sending me another phone and I just send this one back.
Useless reason to get a replacement, and I wouldn't be surprised if you got a refurb that was worse than the one you have.

Why is it a useless reason? the phone comes with broken GPS, its not his fault its broken, its the manufacturer, its a faulty product, i paid full price for my phone and im thinking of calling samsung to do the same.

Because some people (like me) have been thruogh at least 3 phones and the GPS on all of them were borked. If I were you, I'd take the reports of "perfect" GPS from these minority posters with a grain of salt.
Returning it because of the GPS is useless, IMO. Better way to get a good GPS would be simply to sell the phone and buy something else.
Doesnt cost me anything to replace it so why not if its worst then the one I have ill send it back and keep,my old one...

the gps restore does not alter any custom settings in lbstestmode anyway... i ran the app every after reboot.. but when you run it.. it fixes your location.. and should work from there..

Man, you guys need to do a little bit of Googling / forum-reading. GPS not working is a SOFTWARE ISSUE on the Vibrant. Getting new hardware won't do a thing. Try one of the many GPS fixes.
Theres so much conflicting information about this issue on this subject telling me to go goggle makes no sense at this point

No, making moronic posts and trying to fix software with new hardware is pointless. No one has ever gotten a new device with magical perfect GPS.
Yeah guys software. I'm using the latest Axura Rom and have to say that Master figured the GPS out. I'm now getting consistent locks in under 15 seconds within 5 meters and staying locked. Before it was at least 90 seconds, usually more, and not staying locked. Definitely software issue not hardware.

Posts like yours are also unnecessary. If you skim over the Axura or any ROM's threads you will find people experiencing GPS problems everywhere.
My GPS with Axura did not work. With Bionix it did not work. I had to use the Samsung app for it to work, and even then I have to re-run the app sometimes.
I doubt a new phone, or a different flash, is the solution. The solution has to come straight from Samsung.

And I can say with certainty that you are wrong yourself in this software assessment.
I have three Vibrants in my family. And I have tested this out with at least 6 (off the top of my head) other friend's Vibrants and this is what I have found.
All Vibrants have some sort of software related GPS issues
-The ones that work well initially (like my phone) eventually seems to act corrupted and start acting out after a few days/weeks of use
-This obviously can be remedied with the basic google server/port/etc fix. Works flawlessly after that on all google related app (apps that use googlemaps/google services to locate you or whatever you are looking for around you)
-If you are not using a google mapping based app, the GPS locks kinda suck sometimes
Some Vibrants have hardware related problems
-These do not work out of the box, take minutes or longer to lock (like my sister's) and it gets worse and better with use (ie flippity flop)
-None of the software fixes work on these Vibrants. But then some days they seem to work, most other days they just suck.
Conclusion:
If your hardware is bad, you have software related issues too. Doing any of these Roms on the development sections is like putting a bandaid on a heart surgery, it barely holds and you will get issues a few mins later.
My sister exchanged her Vibrant, got another, I installed the same Bionix rom (was still on her computer) and now she gets locks as good as mine. I have tried several fixes and rom's on my uncle's and friends Vibrants with mixed results, suggesting that some have bad hardware.
Another thing, this is not the first Samsung phone with GPS I have owned. Compared to my old HTC phone, ALL my Samsung GPS' have never been that great. My Beholds were so so GPS wise, you can never expect them to stay locked all the time especially if you are standing still. But hands down the GPS on the Vibrants have been the worst (on some units, mine and my sister's replacement unit excluded).
So IMO it is a double whammy of software and hardware issues

May not cost you anything now, but if you lose, break, or have a phone stolen in the future and the insurance deposit is $25 higher than it is now we can all agree why it's gone up.
First of all I dont even have insurance it's not like I bricked my phone and sending it back did you read the subject of the thread I didn't ask for little kids opinions if I wanna try a different phone that's up to me I asked opinion of people who already have replaced it

if you ever wanna change anything in the settings.. make sure you write them down if ever you wanna divert to the default settings..
the only settings i changed were the
supl server ; supl.google.com
server port ; 7276
secure socket ; off , works better, faster locks compared to off in these settings
not sure if any of these settings changes make any difference.. but i prefer to use the google server instead of that www.spirent-lcs.com
i think regardless of your settings in lbstestmode... when you run the gpsrestore app .. the app itself only uses the correct settings despite the lbstestmode changes/settings.. not sure.. i think the gpsrestore app works on its own when you run it and does not rely in the lbstestmode settings per se?? (totally unsure, just taking a wild guess)..
i wish samsung elaborated even more with regards to the gps fix app.. coz it's supposed to restore the settings ,but the custom settings do not get reverted back to the default one anyway even after running the gpsrestore.. maybe it does get restored within the system??? ughhhh
LOL i dont know
Take a lesson from this guy...

And to the OP: I'm sorry you're having issues. I'm not experiencing any of those issues.
Well said. I'm new to the whole Android experience,
but am no stranger to expecting quality out of my investments. I'll continue to try to help the cause with you, seeing as how I'm going to have to get along with this phone for the next two years, being a college student and all. I, for one, appreciate you being outspoken about it, as silence has rarely solves anything.

I'm with you a 100%. I tried to ingore the reception issues and put my faith in a ota. But the fact is my 30 day clock is coming ahead. I'm thinking about exchanging to motorola xoom tablet and call it a day. I love my nexus s 4g, it a phone I can keep for a 12 months or more and that's rare for me.
I'm calling sprint soon for a exchange my 1st.

I'm gonna tweet this to google nexus.
update: just tweeted the vid to google and told em that I'm gonna take it back if nothing is addressed before my 30 days are up. even if it's samsung/sprint's issue, its still google's product and i know google can sway BOTH companies if they wanted to. I REALLY REALLY don't wanna jump to the EVO 3D!!!
great video man. I'm glad that someone is deciding to step up about this. I purchased the phone just this evening and I'm already noticing that the radio is a little iffy. Not to mention I haven't been able to send a single text message since the damn thing was activated! (i'm hoping that that is a seperate issue that will be resolved with time)
WE CANNOT KEEP QUIET ABOUT THIS
I'm going to post this video on nexus s facebook and google also
Fixxxer, I've seen you on the forums being outspoken about this issue and I'm with you 100%. My wifi and 3g signals are atrocious. Constantly losing signals or very weak signals comparable to EDGE speeds.
Google has dropped the ball on this in my opinion. It is Google's phone and their name and reputation stands behind it and for them to not offer some sort of official statement acknowledging the widespread issue people are having (and no, not some random Google employee on their forum saying it is being looked into) is a disservice to the customers that support them.
One thing I cannot fault is people being brand loyal to Apple and their iPhone because they get 1st class service and immediate official responses while Nexus adopters have no clue who to contact for answers. Sprint and Samsung are clueless and only advice is to return it for an exchange or send you an airave.
Google, it is your phone. Do something about it!
thanks for the kind words guys. it's a shame there are still a few out there that seem to want us to just keep quiet about this. maybe they are afraid it will ruin the rep of the nexus s? look what the evo3d users got after being very vocal to htc.
as ive said before they have made no public announcements of a fix, anything you read on a forum about a fix unless from a credible source is BS.
It makes me sad you guys are having issues with this awesome phone.
I really hope it can be fixed. What I don't understand is that my GSM Nexus S seems to have an amazing antenna, and gets service where other T-Mobile phones don't.

i got a response back from samsung about my youtube video... they claim they are unaware of the issue and that they want me to send them my phone for testing. samsung is totally clueless to our problems people. we need to push harder here.
i guess we just don't have the fanbase the evo line has. i give htc props for responding to the mass yesterday. at least they will get what they demanded.
well i was hoping my video would make a dent but it's not so far. the sprint forums has pretty much died off to a stand still right now. im not sure what else i can do for us? maybe it's just time to throw in the towel and exchange for another phone.

I think it is Google you need to be communicating with about it, since it is a Nexus phone.
Google did mention they were going to do some testing:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=72cde4a29b9021c3&hl=en
I don't think there is going to be a quick fix, it is going to take time for a software update to roll out.

But it is a Google supported phone, yes it seems to have something to do with the radios but it could very well be with how the Android OS is interacting with them. It would make sense to start with Google and then Google do their testing and go to Samsung if needed.

What does 4g idle status mean ??

Sorry for shouting, but I'm getting no answers.
Does everyone here also get an idle 4G icon after a short amount of time ?
What does it mean ?
I was under the impression that it's a phone design to conserve battery life, as explained here
http://www.deepeshpradhan.com/nexus-s4g-is-just-better-and-faster-and-its-is-google-phone
But, when mine does idle, it doesn't fall back to 3G, it just remains off, effectively turning this into a dumb unit. No connection.Nothing.
I'm looking for people to prove me wrong and to tell me that when they are idle on 4G, they receive notification INSTANTLY on apps like google talk.
I'm not talking 3 minutes delayed until 4G kicks back in again, I'm talking instant messaging , as it should be.
If I'm proved wrong, I must have a defective unit, but if this is software related, then somethings amiss ????
I have not noticed this myself... but I have seen at least one other thread saying the same thing.
I'd rather take the battery drain.

Because I don't believe you. I believe you must be getting a connection forced when you're having something polled. Or you get them when the icon goes back to green with bars. Not when it's grey with 3 dots. You cannot be. I've checked *#*#4636#*#* when it's idle, and there is simply NO connection.

Ok, do you think I may have a defective handset ? Could it be hardware related ?
I have literally just sent myself another email (at 08:22am) and my phone is sitting idle on my table at 08:29 with no email notification...
It's driving me mad. I literally cannot work like this (I rely on gtalk and gmail for my business)
If this is handset related, I can live with it if it fixes itself when I swap it out. If it's software related, I guess I'm screwed.
I just think that you guys have something that's polling regularly ??

thats because the evo leaves the connection on. this is the whole point of "idle", so everybody doesnt complain of battery on 4g. now we are faced with a different problem. the video is hard to argue with. lets bug sammy to come up with a solution. until then, those who are affected by this just go back to 3g?

It isn't, clearly as my video shows.
You have a weather widget which probably polls, plus god knows how many other widgets and apps pulling in stuff every few seconds.
I have stock, with no apps apart from a clock on the home screen.
I will be swapp[ing the phone out tomorrow. I will then do the same tests with stock software out of the box,and see what happens when it idles.
I will come back here and let you know what happens. I will humbly apologise for wasting time if it's seen to be a hardware thing, but for now I will hold judgment.

Overheating Solved

Well I hope i have some answers for some of you who are having this overheating issue. Being that I am on my second GS4 in less than 4 days due to overheating. This is what I got from a sprint repair store who confirmed a couple things for me. One thing he confirmed is the GS4 has poor air-circulation and when the back cover is on it dissipates heat poorly, just like the GS3 and 2. H,,, wondering why samsung didnt address this issue. Second thing he confirmed it that anywhere from 45-60 percent of the batteries are defective to the point of getting hotter than they should, and roughly 15-20 percent of those could cause permanent damage. He said sprint is trying to develop a different backing for the phone to promote better air circulation to help cool it due to the amount of power the phone has, though he wasnt sure when it would be out. Also an update was sent out today and hopefully a heating problem was included within this update.
So my 2nd GS4 was tested and it had a defective battery. I was told if this one has the same issue then I can go back to my note 2. I am thinking I would rather have a stable phone over a faster phone. Hope this helps some of you. Also those who are having this heat issue do not let the phone charge overnight, or charge the phone with the back off. I know it isnt practicle but until samsung fixes the issue we have no other options. Also underclocking doesnt seem to help all of them
If this helps please send a thanks i would appreciate it
I have three batteries so far. One original that came with the phone. One Samsung OEM that came with an external charger that was shipped from south Korea and a Hyperion. None of them overheat. If these batteries are like anything from the laptop fiasco years ago, with faulty cells overheating to the point where the device catches on fire violently.... From what I've seen and what I've been told by a friend that repairs electronics, li on batteries aren't to be messed with. If they go bad or short, you could have a fireball or grenade in your pocket.
Why would Sprint be making a different backing to prevent overheating? Did you mean Samsung?

yes thank Samsung not Sprint
I don't follow other carriers s4 forums. I haven't read any issues on phone sites about this being a wide spread problem. The battery door is the same, or should be the same, between carriers, just different printing on the door. I don't know if OP overclocked at any point. That might have caused later issues. It could have just been a battery that tested OK at the factory, but a cell developed a problem later and started screwing up. Judging by my personal experience when I bought my phone, the original phone I wanted was black but was missing the sim out of the box. I had to take the only remaining s4 they had, which was white . Other people reporting screen issues, and other things, makes me come to the conclusion that Samsung's quality control isn't doing their job or is being told to ship units anyways.
Interesting.
Did you say update today

Not sure where this tech came up with this stuff but none of this is true...there are no Sprint bulletins/back cover initiatives or known battery issues floating around internally at at Sprint

if 40%-60% of batteries had overheating issues this forum as well as regular News sites would be filled with stories about it.
Aside from the fake story about poor sales that caused a Samsung stock tank I have not read any news articles about defects or problems endemic to the S4.
First of all, what part of the phone feels warm to you? I'd be willing to bet that it's on top by the camera rather than in the middle by the battery. All it means is that you have a phone with a really powerful CPU and no heat sink. The battery isn't the problem. The SOC just runs kind of warm. No cause for alarm.

Thought about installing a small fan in the back. I micro fan that turns on when the cpu area gets warm enough would be bad ass.

Actually you would of lost the bet. lol it is actually on the front of the screen where the battery is. Which also tells me the phone has an issue getting rid of heat. Yes i know screens get warm, but there i diff between warm and so hot the phone shuts off ( i dont use the adjust brigtness auto so please dont say that is the problem). I went back to sprint yesterday and they had the second GS4 I had in the back for three hours, when they were finally done they let me know that they had no fix for it and the manager proceeded to tell me he had 15 GS4's in the back with the same issue. So he said if I was not comfortable with the phone he would give me a new Note 2, so that what I did. I cant believe that samsung would put out such a powerful phone with little to no heat sync. Pretty disappointed

They are actually all over the Sprint community forums. Know I cant vouch on validity of what I was told about a new back in the works all I can do is post my findings here in hopes others will see it. I did not post that to be scrutinized or questioned. It is a known issue the GS4 has a overheating problem you ca call any sprint repair store and they will tell you, and look at the sprint forums. Now he could of said that to get me to stay in the GS4 but I have had many phones and never had an issue with overheating and shutting off.
You also cant say it isnt true. Just because you cant find it doesnt mean it isnt in the works. Just think if they posted that online. Do you know how many upset customers they would have? I think it is smart not to post it until there is a confirmed report done by either samsung or sprint about this issue. Right now all they have are many phones with this issue and the folks who are bringing them in to be checked.
Very interesting.

The community forums are just that...a public forum very similar to this.
Beyond that, I manage a Sprint repair store...the information claimed here does not exist. Sorry.

lol i work for sprint also, so let me guess your going to say you work for samsung part-time. You must not know to much about the company you work for. yes they are forums, forums that sprint monitors to see what is going on, because lets face it not every customer reports their problems to a repair center. Also maybe you didnt get the memo
gain the information I posted we what was given to me
