Extra Storage - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

I wanted to know what everyone is using for extra storage, besides dropbox. I am considering purchasing the Western Digital My Book Live. I didn't know if there are better alternatives out there.

I only have the 16gig Wifi Tab and have plenty of space so for my needs, but I am using Google Music Beta which is quite handy.

I must say Google music has my tab pretty empty. Love it!

Yeah, cloud based stuff has my Tab with about 25GB free. I also have a Seagate Go Flex HDD on my home network that does a variety of stuff, including serving up mobile files. There's even an app for that in the Market that I can use to hit that drive over the internet, so it's my own dinky private cloud.
Also, with programs like Gmote and Splashtop, and now Kies WiFi you can just use your home PC/Mac to store stuff.
And looking at your link, the Seagate and Western Digital products seem comparable in feature sets.

Not using anything yet. I have the 16 GB version which seems like enough for me, but I'm currently down to 1 GB cause I have downloaded quite a few movies lol!! I use Google Music for all my songs.

Microsoft's Skydrive offers 25 gb for free.

I use sugarsync free 5gb.

I have the USB kit which I plug in a 32GB microSD for extra storage or physically xfer'n files to the tab. Since, I also have a TF101, I was able to get an unlimited (500GB) online account from Asus Webstorage. You get a free unlimited account when you purchase a TF101.

what do you need to subscribe to the unlimited online account? serial number?

Well it's not free. After a year you will need to pay...

8gb or 16gb

Please share your thoughts. looking to get.
For $50 more its a no brainer, besides you're only getting a little over 5gb with an 8gb device.

I agree 100%.
I bought the 16gb for that very reason.
It almost doesn't make sense to get an 8gb.

It dependents on how you want to use the Nexus 7.
Before I bought the Nexus 7, I checked out my usage on my 16GB Asus T101.
It was less than 4 GB.
If you're just viewing content, doing email, reading a couple of books you can probably get away with the 8GB model.
The reason why I say this is that if you're just needing this as a traveling companion, the 8GB will probably be okay.
If you think you might want to carry around more to entertain you, then you should probably select the 16 GB model.
I've had my Nexus 7 for a little over 2 weeks and I still have over 8.01 GB free.
Here's an example of what's on it now: apps, 4.08 GB, pictures, videos, 12.1 MB, audio , 20 KB, downloads: 259 MB.
Perhaps others will tell what their storage looks like.
The extra storage is comforting so if you think you might use it, go for the 16 GB.
16GB all the way. While you can always access your media from the cloud (assuming a wifi connection) if you want to carry any media with you, not to mention an app or two you will be sorry with only 8GB to work with.
after the formatted volume and operating is took into consideration it would be not enough to have 8gb, i got the 16gb and its great

While I agree that 8gb would probably be ok for Mom and Aunt Nancy, anyone on these forums should opt for the 16gb. Even if you don't "normally" use that much storage, there will always be that one time. Plus resale value on these will be crappy for the 8gb. Anyone rebuying these will want the 16gb.
In this day and age, 8gb devices are a joke. I know they keep cost to a minimum but the actual price difference between a 8gb and 16gb chip is nil. The bare minimum should be 16gb and even those should be fading out soon. Honestly tablets should be 16gb/32gb/64gb.

Google and Asus must be loving this thinking too, you could buy a 16gb micro sd for $10, and they get to charge 50 for just an extra 8gb.
Not saying it's the wrong decision to get the 16gb, it's just annoying
if youre an 'on the cloud' guy.... go for 8gb....
if you like to store everything for offline use... go for 16gb..
i have a 16gb... and am always connected to wifi.... everything on google's cloud, got 13.24GB free space
your choice really... but I don't think i would have regretted getting the 8gb one
If you flash ROMs a lot definitely get the 16gb because I do and I got the 8gb and I think that it's not enough because I need to plug it in the PC to put ROMs/backups/etc very often (with 8gb you only get about 5.xxgb of usable storage) ... So if I bought one I'd buy the 16gb, but I got mine as a gift so I am not complaining
Also keep in mind that 8gB is like ~6+GB available space while 16gb is about 13+GB available

Really are comments like your Mom and Aunt Nancy really necessary...sounds a bit irrelevant unless you're trying to make this a sexist issue.
Thanks everyone for their replies. I ended up taking Vbacon's advice of looking at my Asus TF101's usage.
After many ROMS, videos, and even the entire MAME ROM collection, i still never passed 4 gb out of 32gb on it. So i bought the 8GB nexus.
I used the device mostly as a browser/emailer. I used to stream music from it, but now use my Droid Razr for that. When i do watch video, it's streaming from HBOgo, Netflix, amazon Instant video or brighthouse. So the reality was, i just wasn't storing much.
Many on the replies said they bought the 16gb and that their decision was absolutely worth it. what was it that made it absolutely worthwhile? Is it just peace of mind or actual use?
16GB is my recommendation,
Besides of the available space there are benchmarks showing that I/O performance is better than in the 8GB version because of the controller used. and 50 more bucks is not that much for extra space that you may need some day
I purchased the 16gb so that I wouldn't have to deal with Out Of Space errors that plagued my HTC Droid Incredible. I play Zen Pinball, Pinball Arcade, & use tTorrent Pro. The pinball games can have tables that run into 100mb & up. Pinball Arcade has almost 10 tables available for purchase. Zen Pinball has 8 tables available. Storage space becomes an issue quickly.

i was open-minded. I just didn't see any logical reason to buy bigger except for the last post that spoke about I/O performance.
16 GB because the system itself takes memory, so a 8GB device, would have like 5GB available empty :S

I don't plan to watch a lot of movies. Mainly the web.

I had a similar thread in the questions forum...should be some help in deciding but sounds like if you're just using it for movies the 16GB will be the right call...also a short discussion on OTG cable + storage options in my thread

You'll be fine with 16 gigs, even if you end up watching a lotta movies. 13GB is usable I believe, if apps and stuff take another 3, 10 gigs is still quite good for a couple of preloaded films. If not, you can always connect a cheap storage via USB OTG and stream multimedia via Nexus Media Importer. One way or another, asking for a full $100 extra for a NANDFLASH memory that costs Google about $6 is no way justified. I'll get the 16GB if and when it gets back into stock.

Nexus 4 8GB - Too less?

I'm thinking of ordering a Nexus 4 but I'm confused about which version to order. Would 8GB actually be too less? How much actual storage space will I have, considering the space the OS and other required components will take?
I'm not planning to store any movies in my phone, nor store too many HD videos. Just some HD games and 4GB or so of music.
Any suggestions? Will I regret taking the 8gig version?

As they say when purchasing a TV, go one size bigger. But honestly for $50 more you get twice the storage. As apps update, some of them will also increase (maybe dramatically) in size. You want to make sure that you will have space for your favorite apps and the media you want on it.
You don't want to go down the line in the future and say to yourself "Why didn't I buy the 16GB!?!"
Those are just my thoughts on it. I bought my 16GB with that in mind.
I make 8gb work. Could I use 8gb more? Yes. I don't have very many apps on my phone (23 on Google Play), roughly 4gb of music playlists saved for offline and I have a gigabyte left of storage to download more apps or keep some more music. I do everything online and that is how I make it work. I also don't play games on my phone. It also helps that I'm rooted and probably have stripped 500mb of system apps from the stock ROM. I was on a tight budget and I'm happy with my phone, although at times 8gb cuts it very close after formatted memory, haha.

"Some HD games and 4GB of music", you would definately need the 16GB model. its always nice to have some free space just inacse
Yes there's nothing wrong with future proofing yourself if you can afford it as this phone has no SD card slot
I think the general rule is that if you ever doubt yourself in this situation, it's a safer route to stick with 16gb.
I have an 8gb and I was worried about the storage space. I'm amazed at how much you can save with 8gb. You have to learn to not save a bazillion nandroid backups and save as much as you can on some type of cloud or something. I'm using box.com and have hundreds of pics and files saved there. I've learned to just not save useless things. With that said if you play games a lot get the 16gb it can't hurt. BTW I ordered a 16gb on play store on the 13th which I've still yet to receive so I got a 8gb from craigslist for a price I couldn't away. I'm now planning on selling the 16 to a buddy of mine when I get it. I'm perfectly happy with my 8gb I am fully rooted and have a custom recovery which happens to take most of my used space and I still have Lil over 3GB.

Too little. As in, "The 8 GB version has less space, having fewer GB than the 16 GB version, but is it too little?"
GRAMMAR NAZI AWAAAAAY!
I bought a 16GB because that's the smallest tier storage I've ever bought in all my phones, but I rarely use more than a couple gigabytes. The main reason is to not worry about storage at all vs managing your storage sometimes (like deleting Google Music Cache, disabling YouTube preloading etc.)
Besides the resale value, there is honestly no use for me with the 16GB.
It all comes to how you plan to use the device and consume content. I used to have 4GB of music, but honestly only listened to maybe 100MB worth at any given time... so once I truncated that, I've never had space issues with 8GB devices unless a long trip and I wanted some movies (but now I have a tablet for that).

[Q] Is waiting for the 32GB a bad idea?

As the title says, is it a bad idea to wait around for the 32gb S4 if I want to be able to flash a custom recovery and install custom ROMs? I've had my SII since release day and I've found that the 16GB internal storage is manageable, but leaves me constantly having to decide which apps are really worth keeping/constantly having to dig through files to clean up unnecessary files. With the S4 being so much less than a full 16GB I feel like this struggle for storage will be a constant annoyance. Is it a huge gamble to wait around for a 32gb version? Is it likely that AT&T will blacklist the current software preventing me from flashing back to an unlockable bootloader? I guess I'm also wondering how many people are in the same boat as me and if anybody has any inside information?
I'm not sure if it's a bad idea for you to wait, but I say yes. I got the S4 16gb model, with a class 10 32gb memory card. I'm happy with it. You can always increase the memory by purchasing a 32gb or 64gb memory card. Just know, the 128gb mem card is around the corner. Also, the SG S5 will most likely be available next year around this time, and able to handle a 128gb memory card. So you can wait or just the S4 that's available now and be done with it.
The cloud is your friend..
Google Music lets you upload and store like 22,000 songs for free. Use dropbox, box, Google drive ect for photos..
I don't even use SD cards anymore as when I purchased my Chromebook Pixel it came with 1TB of Google Drive space..
But as far as apps go, is the 9 or so gigs of useable space enough?
And I rely on the cloud for music and an SD for pictures so that isn't really an issue for me.

Haha is that a note 2? And I already do, well, maybe not that incredible, but it gets me through a day without worry haha. My SII has a 3600 mAh battery.
As far as the S4, I think I'm going to give it a week and if there's no new news I'll give in and get the 16gb
Nice...I got a 6200
Haha it shows. I think I did pretty well for like $25 on Amazon though.
Damn...just looked up the hyperion (which I assume you have) and you've got me beat on that too... I do really like the note, but a 6" screen (as rumored on the note 3) is wayyyy too big for me. And I know it's likely a fluke, but I watched my younger brother crack his Note 2's screen after it fell off of his lap about 6 inches and cracked hitting a grass field.

Cloud is only your friend when you have unlimited data and your not an audiophile...I would use up my 3gb data plan in a day if relied on the cloud...I only listen to high quality audio files nothing ender 320kbps but usually flac or occasionally wav...I have some music files that are over 800mbs (mixes) listen to that mix four times and my data is done...so in my case cloud is the enemy as it seems to be taking away sd cards from many phones
Ok...and to the op, I would wait until the day the unlock process is released...if still no word on the 32gb than get the 16gb. My reasoning behind this is you have nothing to worry about until the unlock process is released. Once its released than you have to start worrying about it because thats when they start working on a patch

I have unlimited data grandfathered in so that isn't a big issue for me. I tend to keep my audiophile qualities confined to my computer as that's where all my FLAC is stored. I mostly use my phone's music for the car which doesn't have a premium sound system so I can deal with lower quality streamed music.
My biggest concern with the wait was in fact a bootloader patch so it sounds like I have nothing to worry about. I'm impatient so I was almost hoping somebody would talk me into just going out and buying one now but I highly doubt I'll regret waiting for a higher capacity S4. Thanks for the advice.

Just put your music on the SD card?
The partitions in the GS4 are jiggled so that there's a lot more allocated for apps. It'll be tough to fill it up with apps as long as you put your music and videos on the microSD card.
Rumor has the 32gb coming out in a few wks. Plus Google I/0 is coming up soon.
I honestly would wait & then make decision.

I respectfully do not call something such as the cloud that requires data use (2GB data caps), drains more battery and requires a data connection always to use, a "friend". As an option, sure, but if choosing that over local storage, the cloud is more like a distant acquaintance you never really liked, but are stuck with them on a bus ride and can not escape from them
BTW, the actual usable storage ranges from 8 to 9gb and not 10. You need to leave about 500mb free so apps can update. If you are a gamer, or use large data file apps, the 8gb (aka 16gb) version is a poor choice. A 32GB S3 is a much better option, IMO. 18gb more free app storage and no annoying cloud tagging along on a bus ride.

MicroSd 1tb for Note 10+

Wondering, just out of curiosity, what would be the reason for using a 1TB microSD in the phone.
We know that SD cards do fail sometimes and that is my biggest argument against spending $440(10/26/19) on that card and possibly losing at once an enormous amount of accumulated files.
Sandisk 1TB Extreme microSD......................................$440
Sandisk 512GB...........................$147....................x2 = $294(1TB)
Sandisk 256GB...........................$50.5...................x4 = $202(1TB)
Sandisk 128GB...........................$24......................x8 = $192(1TB)
The benefits of getting smaller SD cards: over 50% savings and less pain in the neck if the card goes bad.
I think the same, although it is good to feel that you will not run out of space, the 512gb and 1tb are quite expensive, this device already has a generous built in storage capacity, for peace of mind I got a 128gb card, mainly for music, apk files, some downloads, wallpapers, etc.
apps and important things go directly to the device storage, which in turn from time to time go to a HDD and cloud storage
The trouble with the smaller cards is they aren't hot swappable and also you need to eject the sim as well as the sd card to swap.
I personally don't carry a sim eject tool around with me as they are so easy to lose...
The point of having the sd card over just the internal storage is if Android, like most OSes, decides to break and needs a factory reset you can loose all your data/pictures/videos/songs.
Cloud storage is an option but I do know people who WILL NOT use the cloud to store these things and even if you do, it is a hassle to retrieve, especially if your plan is light on the data....
The larger sd cards are convenient, and lets be honest, that's why we have mobile phones... No need to find a public phone and have your conversation eavesdropped, and the time spent to find the phone box and wait to use.
Unfortunately, convenience costs $$$....
I actually have both: a decent sized microSD(256GB), and a 256GB flash drive(that I connect via usbC to usbC 8" extension).
Im lucky enough to have a microcenter in my area, and their 256GB cards are cheap(34 dollars normally, and even cheaper when on sale), and reliable. So, you don't have to spend a ton, unless you simply want to. And I like the external extension simply because it allowed me take transfer large files on a moment's notice, to and from my phone and pc..
I don't care for cloud storage, and never really have, since they always start you worth one amount, and change it up on you(shrink iit) over time.. That, and I just don't trust it..

Thankfully there is OTG, not “swappable” but it makes the phone files easily transferable, that small pocket-size portable 2TB SSD costs about $80 or you can use a microSD dongle for the same purpose, I know it's a personal preference but the 1TB micro SD seem just too much $$$...like, half what the phone is worth itself and it's always good to have less expensive options.

I agree, the more options for storage the better... Hopefully Samsung, in their infinite wisdom, don't see fit to remove the SD storage off their future range of phones like they did with the Note 10 and the Fold...
Terrible decision...
I'm saying this as I restore stuff from my SD Card and online storage after a factory reset... It's such a pain my whole network goes so slow while downloading the Gigabytes of data I need to restore....

To avoid incompatibility with Samsung the drive must be formatted to exFat(stock will be NTFS most likely)
The drive has a decent speed, I mean much faster then any microSD - here you can see it on USB 3.0 PC bus:

Thanks for your reply brother, you mentioned an OTG usb that was not swappable, I was specifically hoping to find something like that in regards to connecting it to my smartphone and like a USB key unplugging it, I misread your post LOL I have external ssds I was hoping that there was an actual OTG USB key that was two terabytes LOL my apologies for my error of understanding lol

All is good, no apologies necessary - at least we generated a few posts in this thread about additional storage that it may help OP to sort things out while looking for 1TB micro SD for his/her phone
Black Friday and Cyber Monday are around the corner. They typically drop in price significantly. I'd guess 60 for a 512gb this year. :fingers-crossed:

Im wondering, but haven't tried as of yet, why not an actual portable HD also.. I may disconnect my portable, and set if it works.. They are certainly inexpensive these days, for am extremely large amount of space..

I always have a sim ejection tool with me.. My sim ejection tool is on my Car/House keyring! You will never lose it, unless you lose your car keys witch is highly unlikely!

Might need to reformat exFat, Try and see if NTFS registers but I've had limited success with that usually ending up having to run 3rd party apps to use NTFS formatted drives...

I will have to disconnect my portable and set if I can just plug it in. If it works I'll let you all know. That honestly else be the ultimate
