Of course Samsung won't admit that their update is bricking devices. I do give them credit for identifying there is a problem and halting the update until the problems are resolved. As long as Samsung is making things right by the customer, such as replacing said bricked device, you can't ask for much more than that.

On the Android phone side, it happened almost to every major updates Samsung released in many regions (Europe, Canada and US). First, update released. Then, halted. After a while, re-released again.
So, it is not too much to ask Samsung not to do this on every updates. Where is the testing/QA?
I don't know if that's what bricked mine or not, but it's good to know.
I opened my shiny new Galaxy Tab 10.1 on Monday afternoon. One of the first things I did was install updates. After I tried to power cycle it, I could not get it to turn back on. It went back to Samsung yesterday for repair/replacement.
Mine was sort of bricked. After I installed the TW update (the day it was released) it was caught in a boot loop. Samsung support had me clear all user data via recovery boot - that didn't fix it so the only option they offered was for me to send it back. I ended up rooting it and installing the OTA image with TW I got from here.
Samsung could do a lot better here by offering the utility to flash a fresh OS onto the device. There's no reason for us to send in the Tablet because it's caught in a boot loop. It'd save Samsung a lot of money if they'd support end user device wipe and reloads of the OS via a PC.

Oh I agree completely.... I wish companies would test their updates more thoroughly before releasing for general consumption. I see that crap all the time at work. But sadly, we consumers have become beta testers... and have been for quite some time I'm afraid. What I'm saying is that at least Samsung is trying to make it right by the consumer by either fixing or replacing the device.

OTA's are staged out in batches, not all at once. T-Mobile has sold about a million of these phones at this point (given that Samsung claims 3 million SGS Phones sold in the U.S. this is entirely likely). They are most definitely NOT going to update a million phones at the same time.
The update for YOU could come now, tomorrow, next week, or before the end of the month. Sitting here in a thread hitting refresh hoping for vital info about the OTA is a complete waste of time.
You have four options...
1). Wait for the OTA, which will arrive whenever it arrives
2). Frankin Twiz, built on JI6
3). Bionix 1.6, built on JI6
4). leaked unmodified JI6 firmware
Options 2,3,4 will get you JI6 today, with the associated risks of taking the management of the update into your hands. Option 1 is the official option which requires nothing but patience. Decide.
Wonder if I could call T-mobile and naively ask about a GPS problem and see if they will go ahead and push JI6 to me?
Nope nothing in WA I sure hope I won't have to wait til the end of the month....

Ha! You think customer care or tech care have that much power? The people in tmo who do, ssg data, don't take any calls and if they want to, never actually have to talk to the customer at all. They work solely on trouble tickets and work orders. The highest you may get by calling tech is atsg, the people who submit trouble tickets to them.

Did you have lagfix installed? That could be the problem.
On another note, why are so many people waiting patiently for the OTA? Just flash one of the leaks. Bionix 1.6 is well worth it! And you can always ODIN back to stock!

I got off the phone with tech support at T Mobile a few hours ago and here is what they related to me. Your inability to get checkin succeeded may or may not be usual or normal, they have no clue and the OTA is scheduled to run from 10-7 thru 10-31. has anyone else or does anyone else have the same inability to get feedback from the checkin code? This is the only phone I have had that the checkin failed to register except for a MT3g which they promptly replaced.
got the update today... no problems so far...
There is a common misceptiom that Samsu.g will 'lock' the epic and we will not be able to root it anymore. Not only did samsung say they wouldmt, we could also easily bypass it. We will ALWAYS have root. Even if we get am update that 'locks' us in some day. All we have to do is Odin/Heimdall to an older fiware, run the one click, Odim/Heimdall the new modem and flash a new custom rom based on the newer firmware or flash the stock new firmware with sh su and superuser.apk.

They can release a signed boot.bin and signed sbl.bin with a signed recovery and kernel. You wouldn't be able to boot an unsigned kernel and you wouldn't be able to start download mode unless you took the phone back to sprint or samsung warranty center.. You will be able to flash and boot a signed kernel. Like they did it with Samsung Galaxy Tab.
They can release update that can unleash the secure ROM with signed checks to see if the boot.bin is tampered with..
samsung possible security system
secure rom > checks boot.bin> boot.bin> checks the sbl.bin> checks zimage& recovery.bin > if all are ok then cont. booting..
64KB ROM for secure booting and 96KB RAM for security function

Still new to these forums so I don't know if it's bad form to post from Phandroid but they have this up today:
If you had any bad words about Samsung’s relationship with the underground Android development scene, bite your tongue now. The handset manufacturer just delivered a brand new Samsung Galaxy S II to CyanogenMod developer AtinM with the express purpose of getting a version of their latest CM7 software up and running on Sammy’s latest flagship device. It seems to be part of the continuing ebb and flow of reactions to hacking and modding Android devices and software. Almost weekly we learn of a manufacturer either loosening or tightening their grip on locked-down smartphones. Major ups to Samsung for this one. As Atin says in his tweet, “you will not hear me bad-mouth Samsung again.”

I don't want to sound brash, but I don't think Samsung could afford to lock their phones. With some of the bugs and issues associated with the Epic, they need developers like those on xda to fix the problems samsung didn't fix. It keeps at least part of the user-base happy.

Looks like you may be charging that thing for a while, then. Seems that even the T-Mobile version is subject to the plague that is the locked bootloader for right now. Hopefully someone can figure something out or Samsung releases something along the lines of HTC's bootloader unlock for us. For once, the Snapdragon appears to be more crippled than the Exynos.

I understand everyone being upset about the latest development but some need to calm down a bit. Not saying it's anyone in this thread though some comments are a bit over the top. Maybe some people are new around here or others have the memory of a goldfish but this isn't' the first time this has happened to a device. There are a multitude of ways around this. Motorola who is known for locking bootloaders with almost a hatred for consumers, was defeated with the combined effort of many people on XDA. They managed to find the key to unlock the bootloader and it was smooth sailing from there.
Will we obtain the key? Quite possibly. we'll either do it the hard way and get lucky running a program on multiple computers and phones to decrypt it. The other option is that it'll be leaked by an internal source (probably the most likely). Samsung might even give us a dev program to unlock it similar to HTC. The fact is Samsung doesn't want a large customer base to be this unhappy. We are the most influential consumer base as well. Think of all the changes and additions to Android over the past few years. Changes that started here first and were adopted by manufacturers. They use us and in a way, need us to show them what people want. Let's not forget that XDA is the most influential Android site on the net. If Samsung gets snuffed here badly it'll spread very quickly.
TL;DR It'll happen one way or another guys. Chill out. May not be in the time frame we're use to these days (remember waiting weeks to months for root back in the day?) but it will happen. focus on pressuring those who can exact change into doing so. For the ones capable of it you should focus on ways around this.
I for one am not worried. I had a Motorola Defy that had a locked bootloader. By the time I had bought the phone though it had been out for a few months and people had found a way to put custom roms on it so I was happy.

Although I do believe that Samsung should unlock the bootloader and let people make their own choice about their phone. They just need to make it very clear that if you modify your phone your warranty is voided and your on your own. I think they've made it abundantly clear that flashing unsigned firmware voids the warranty. And Samsung can then refurb the phone and resell it. The Knox flag effectively protects Samsung from any liability regarding this sort of thing. Making it impossible to "downgrade" to previous software versions, a practice Samsung started a few years ago, was a bad omen. The dawn of the Knox flag added to this downward spiral. Locking the bootloader is a level of control unprecedented for carriers like T Mobile and Sprint, and continues the evolution of Samsung's security deathgrip.

Yeah it does seem that way. It really sucks, rooting the phone was one of the big reasons I wanted to switch over. I hope someone is able to find an exploit that allows root. I had android a long time ago and ran Cyanogen mod, that thing was cool. It took the super slow stock LG G1 or whatever it was and made it really fast. I would pay for that on this phone, it has so much potential.

The only issue I have with modding phones is that sometimes when buying used phones the seller doesn't tend to inform the buyer if something is wrong. I bought a phone a few years ago on At&t and realized later that it had Internet but could not make calls out. Apparently the last owner flashed something and messed it up. I ended up selling it for cheap, luckily it worked out for the buyer because the phone would not make calls on At&t but would on T-Mobile and he had T-Mobile.
There should be a bootloader unlocking tool that will let you forfeit all your claiming rights but also put you on a list by you imei number that can tell potential buyer your phone has been modified. While you may wont to modify it I wouldn't wont any of your problems. Worst of all is when you hear there is an update for your phone but you cant get it because your phone was modded with out your knowledge when purchasing.
