So t-mobile sent me a brand new MT4G a few weeks ago, I sent them my HTC G2. I like the phone and it has been great but just recently I've been experiencing battery drain and I've noticed that the battery temperature increased a lot. The phone started lagging a bit as well.
I downloaded OS Monitor to see if any apps were causing this. I went through the list all apps were at 0%. However, I did notice that the CPU usage is always around 92-98%. And the very first process is titled "/init" and uses anywhere from 80-94% load. I clicked on the details and here's what it looks like:
Process: /init
Memory: 256k Threads: 1 Load: 92%
STime:277132 Utime: 424258
User:root Status: Running
Could that be the issue?
Not sure what else to check.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Just wondering what rom are you using? Did you flash OC daemon?
Wow you must be living under a rock.
There are reports everywhere stating that T-Mobile is having a problem with their 4G network. Some people are falling victim to their battery draining grasp. While others are frolicking through the fields with no worries.
Android and me has reported it, there are several threads on it, T-Mo News is reporting it. T-Mobile's support forums has acknowledged the problem.... it's not really hidden at all.

I updated to the current build, using the samsung tool to update when it came out. I've never rooted, so I have always been stock.
Wiped it, and then went through their whole process to install.
My system shows im running 2.2.1, so I know I did it right.
My question is, Froyo is supposed to have improved linpack scores by up to 5x. I used to get like 8 mflops, and now I get around 13. That is by no means 5x more. Is something not working right? Are other people getting this result?
Next, my battery life is horrible, well much worse then before. While running 2.1, I used Zeam launcher, and had Advanced Task killer set to auto kill everytime I turned my screen off (with the exception of a few apps I used). I would traditionally be able to get like 16 hours of battery life, and still have like 30% battery. This is with texting and web browsing during the day. Now, with minimal texting and less use, ive been getting like 12 hours, and im at like 5% battery life. As far as I know, I have it set up just like I did before. Anyone else running into this at all?
(most of my battery is being used by my Display 89% right now, or so my phone says...)
Maybe I am completely offbase on these, but I want to know if anyone else is running into these questions. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I am fairly new to Andoroid so take it for what it is worth. I am also experiencing a drop off in battery life since Eclair (which was also no great shakes re. battery life, lasted about a day), and did the requisite things necessary to to extend battery life - screen at lowest setting, no automatic sync, wifi/BT/gps off when not in use. In my case, the hog is display (98% ) which I attribute to spending more time with the phone since Froyo update. In my previous phone, a blackberry, it took several days and a few battery pulls for the OS to completely "settle in" - I don't know if that's the case with Android OS.
Five times!
Where did you hear that? People with certain phones saw close to a 2x improvement because of JIT, but JIT isn't optimized for our phones so it doesn't do as much for us. Personally, I think a 50% improvement with only software changes is pretty impressive.
Also, don't use task killers with 2.2. FroYo has better task management than eclair did. And people who have tried using task killers to improve battery life have reported worse battery life than just sticking with the stock memory management.
And you know that since your display is using almost 90% of your battery, the problem isn't a runaway process. It is more likely that the problem is how much time the screen is on. Get spare parts and tell us what percentage of the time since last charge/boot the screen has actually been on to use so much juice.
Battery could be the TWS (time without signal) bug. Go to Settings > About phone > Battery use > Cell standby. See what your time without signal is at. If more than a couple percent then toggle Airplane mode on and off. Also make sure you update your PRL. You may have to do this every time you reboot. My understanding is that it's a common problem with 2.2 and CDMA devices (not just the Epic).

Yeah,

Says 2x-5x. I seeing as i'm not even getting 2x, thats kinda a joke.
But something within the update had to have affected the screens battery use. Like I said before, I had fine battery life not 3 days ago, and now it all of a sudden drops. I HIGHLY doubt that that is a hardware issue. I can test, but I have worked with computer hardware for years, so that just doesn't make any sense to me.
Linpack does not execute any code..it does a floating point calculation..wit JIT you get up to 5x efficiency in code execution..does not mean it crunches numbers faster 5x faster..
The phones that are achieving 5x or more speed are doing so through a flaw in linpack...
I am experiencing an extreme battery drain issue in where the original HTC battery discharges from 100% to 0% in a couple of hours.
So a couple of days ago all of a sudden my phone started overheating. I rebooted it as I thought it might get rid of some excessive CPU usage from an unknown app, but that is not the case. I downloaded quick system info to get an idea of the CPU usage but it seems very normal, idling around 9%.
Then I did a full wipe and flashed the version 8.2 of Ice Cold Sandwich. My radio is also the most recent XX_28. Battery calibration has been done too. Pretty much all the capabilities software-wise don't seem to work.
When idling the phone consumes 630ma according to battery monitor. It gets very hot both while in idle, under load and while charging (45 degrees).
I tried my backup battery which has not been used before. It is a cheap one from Ebay just to test if the original battery has failed. But exactly the same problems occur.
For me it's pretty clear that there is not much left software-wise to do. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
RRU and return to carrier/HTC
Sent from my Desire HD using Swype beta for Android!
I had the same problem. I tried loads of things, in the end I had to send it back to my carrier and turns out there was a fault.
This got solved folks. I used AAHK in order to install an HTC rom and to put S-ON. Then I returned it to HTC. They sent me a new device and a new battery. Great service considering the fact that I couldn't find the invoice when I bought it. But they still accepted the device based on the serial number.
Originally on my N4 I was rocking straight talk ATT side, my battery life was awesome... Well then I recently switched to T-Mobile monthly 4G (faster speeds) and now even after a couple factory wipes my battery doesn't seem very good. I check what's consuming and Android OS and android system is always in the top 2. I can't seem to get those two programs to calm down. Its not a rogue app, I don't have any apps besides xda installed. I am not rooted just running stock. Has anyone else seen a battery life drop since using T-Mobile, is it that significant? Any advice or tip would be appreciative.
This is really interesting to me. I've read a great deal about the Nexus 4 battery issues but as far as I know they've never been linked to carrier. Of course, I haven't read everything about it and someone might have made a connection along the way, but I haven't come across it.
Do you use the Better Battery Stats app? If so, check the number of msm_hsic_host wakelocks. On a good day, mine hovers around 10-12% of the overall wakelocks (today it's 22%, who knows why). To my knowledge, this is related to the Android OS in the stock battery analysis. I'm on AT&T. This would make me hesitant to jump to T-Mobile when my contract ends in March. Hopefully 4.2.2 fixes the problems regardless, but has anyone else seen worse battery life on T-Mobile than AT&T?
After waiting years for a new Windows Mobile device I jumped at the chance to grab a 950 on AT&T. So far, my experience has been a mixed bag.
The phone gets extremely hot after only about 10-minutes of light web browsing on my home WiFi and will drop 20%. At this rate, it wont' last half a day. It stays nice and cool and will only drop a couple of percent over several hours in standby so I don't suspect a rogue background app.
Anyone else experiencing something similar?
***UPDATE*** After 3-days I decided to exchange the phone for a new one and so far the difference is night and day. The new phone is already proving to be better on the battery. I'm cautiously optimistic and will reserve judgement until the end of this week.
You may need to wait charge battery couple circle times. Then see how is battery life
Haven't seen that myself. Battery has been great and no heat issues when using. I did do one factory reset after having it one day. Seemed a little sluggish at first, but after resetting and installing apps, it runs pretty smooth now.
I've had the same issues, and I agree it seems to be worst with web browsing. Not sure if that's an app problem (with Edge) or the device... Everybody says the over heating and battery drain issue should resolve itself over the first week or so. I hope they're right...
Had my phone 4 days. 2 good days/2 bad days with the battery. Seemed to be good after a full discharge and full charge. I've noticed the issues of heat and fast drain after partial charges. I'm not familiar with these issues. Never had the problem with 920. I'm not sure how a battery 'conditions' itself across normal use. Does anyone have knowledge of this? Would really hate to return this phone. Its quite elegant in function despite its bland design.
My phone has been so much better since getting it exchanged at AT&T. I'm inclined to think that it's really an app issue. I follow a handful of tech blogs and I use their own apps to view their sites. I noticed that when I use the WMPoweruser app my phones heats up and starts draining the battery. This also happens with one or two other apps and I suspect that it's because they're not optimized for Windows Mobile 10.
When on the Fast Ring for the Lumia 1020 I was getting awful battery drain. Ended up being the messaging app. I believe because Skype was linked in with it. I had to discover this by using the Settings...System...Battery Saver...Battery use...section in the Settings. Since I upgraded to the 950, even with Skype on the problem doesn't exist. Weird. Glad you worked out your specific issue.
Hi, I also experience the same issue. Got recieved unlocked 950 two days back at USA. So far, 3 to 4 cycle got done. I'm facing phone heat problem and battery drain. If I browse in edge for 15 mins in Wifi, I cannot even hold phone in hand coz of heat liberate on phone. I will see this phone performance for one more week, if it continues I will exchange it.
So following on from the issues with the Note this may seem like I am trolling but I am not.
I and my son have new S7 (not the Edge) on Vodafone. It is the best phone I have ever had both in terms of software and size. Fits my hand perfectly.
My son thinks the same however he is reporting that when the battery gets to about 30% the consumption/drain seems to get faster and the handset heats up. Typically around 1600 each day.
I don't get that as an issue. Occassionally the handset has heated up a bit but typically after heavy web use.
I have suggested he makes sure it is backing up and do a factory reset.
Any thoughts as to what may be causing the problem?

Without knowing what apps he's got running it's not possible to know what's causing the issue. On a side note, you should top off your battery whenever you can. Letting the battery drain very low and then charging back to 100% will decrease the performance of the battery. Is he playing Pokemon perhaps? Cheers!

Thanks Dyno.
AS far as I know he is either in class at university or in the library. He will be using wi-fi to look up technical references as well as social media. I don't think it is heavy use as he should be studying!! He wont be playing Pokemon.
I'll pass on your comments/advice on the battery.
Try downloading malwarebytes from playstore! I just installed a rogue apk file called UPSM manager v.3.5 from apkfiles.com. Phone started to heat up without any usage . Checked GSam and my temps were at 36-37 c! And also warm to touch so i scanned my device with malwarebytes. Removed the malware and now my phone is back to 31-34c .Cool to touch ! Another advice is to disable fast charging and charge it whenever you can just like navrig said. Don't let it drain to below 40%. Once or twice won't hurt in a week but every day is going to wear and tear the battery life cycle. Hope this helps!

I'm having this problem also.
