prime could be a motorola phone... wonder how long this has been in the works

Wow im blown away.... they've kept this under wraps very well.... so I guess if we see froyo on any new big "M" devices we'll know who to blame lol

really makes me wonder if google will buy sprint

I'm surprised they were able to keep it a secret til it was announced by them.

I can only pray that Google buys Sprint. They need to put a stake through the heart of the old telco empires.

ROFL this is definitely some mind blowing news. Wow I just woke up am I dreaming this. I'm suprised motorola is that cheap 12 billion makes me wonder why tmobile was more expensive 39 billion motorola has been around a lot longer and I thought there sales in multiple markets were pretty good

Anyone else think Google is going to buy the rest of the android team. ( Samsung, HTC)
It could be good, our future phones software will come directly from google & not be chopped and screwed like they are now.
I doubt apple would try to sue google if that happens.

This is crazy, I can only imagine how big Google will be 10 years from now, now they have some serious patents and will always have ad money, and that will only grow in the long run.

that will never happen... those companies are very happy right now however. the patents from motorola secure androids future against attacks from microsoft and apple, which is great for companies like samsung and HTC who are heavily invested in android

Net Neutrality, Google's deal with Verizon [Android unrelated]

You only need to read the first 3 paragraphs below to get the idea, but Google and Verizon are talking about a deal to throttle internet speeds to websites that can pay more money.
Anyways, here's a link to a pre-made email to send, all you have to do is put some info in. http://freepr.es/bXFB7i
I don't really want to sound like I'm some spokesperson about net neutrality, I just agree with it, and I think this is a bad deal, so I'm trying to get the word out best way I know.
Google is about to cut a deal with Verizon that would end the Internet as we know it.
According to a front-page New York Times story, the deal allows “Verizon to speed some online content to Internet users more quickly if the content's creators are willing to pay for the privilege."
It would create fast Internet lanes for the largest corporations and slow lanes for the rest of us.
That’s why we’re starting a mass protest by Google users to stop these two companies from joining forces to sell out millions of people like us who use the Internet.
If Millions Join Our Call, We Can Stop this Deal: Tell Google, “Don’t Be Evil"
Google’s motto is supposed to be “Don’t Be Evil.” But this deal puts the company in bed with the devil.
From the beginning, the Internet has been a level playing field that allows everyone to connect to one another and the world of content available online -- whether it's ABC News or your cousin’s wedding video. There’s only one Internet, and it shouldn’t matter who your provider is or whether you're logging on from home or your cell phone.
This deal will change all of that, allowing Google and Verizon to pick what websites you can see over others. The result couldn't be bleaker for the future of the Internet and for free speech and independent voices online.
Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin created Google to make information freely available to everyone online. But this deal is a complete reversal that abandons their core principles:
Sign this letter and tell Google’s founders:
“Your Verizon deal IS evil, and it must be stopped.”
It’s up to the millions of people who use Google every day to tell the company to do the right thing.
Google must walk away from this bad deal, and make sure Internet users everywhere can enjoy the entire open Internet wherever, whenever and however they want.

I havent had a chance to really dig into this but if it is as the couple stories I have read about it suggest this is not good.
Net Neutrality has been a big issue for awhile now. Google was known for fighting for it. That's why this was such a big deal. Turns out it to be false.
if this is true it could very well be android related as Verizon could shut HTC and other manufacturers out. i would like a more firm statement from them

They could I suppose, but HTC makes phones for them too, and they could probably afford to have the speed increase if this were true. I don't know why Verizon would do that.
I don't follow news very well, but it looks like both Google, and Verizon, have denied this.
I haven't read into it much, but sounds like it's false. I'm glad Google is fighting for net neutrality, which is why when I heard about this alleged deal, I was upset at Google.

Good luck. Didn't we just see the news that Android is killing the other mobile platforms in sales? I still believe in Google. They fought against Apple and MS, and now they're taking serious ground. They'll do the same if they meet opposition from another front. But, yes, they do need to state their position unequivocally and officially.

yeah... clearly they are. but RIM is still top for business solutions. I just hope it stays that way. Android should keep their noses out of business [to an extent] and RIM should keep their nose out of social networking/more of an entertainment arena. at least for now. neither has a grasp fully on the other and trying to do so will just water down all phones

The announcement will be that the Steelers won the Superbowl

Sure...
I spoke to sprint advanced tech support and he hinted that it would be a Sprint iPhone, though he admitted he would not put money down on that.
It will NOT be a Sprint iPhone. if it is I will cancel my service with them immediately for two reasons.
1. An IPhone for Sprint = not an industry first (people aren't seeming to grasp this one, though its not necessarily your prediction just what a rep said)
2. The iPhone 4 is already a device that is on the brink of obsolete. In a world where dual cores and 4g are becoming standard, the people buying iPhone for Verizon are asking to get left behind. If Sprint, who has been doing a great job of staying ahead of the game, decides that taking two steps back and calling it an "industry first" is a wise new game plan, I may as well throw in the towel.
Remember, a vast majority of sales reps, really don't know what they are even talking about.

May have been slight exaggeration... but, innovation and making that tiny effort to stay ahead is the main reason I go with sprint. The fact being that the company has been doing a great job leading the game without being the biggest in sales or subscribers would make all this fuss over an obsolete phone, instead of putting that money to better uses, would definitely make me question if I should go to Verizon or ATT for their soon to be superior phones (atrix, bionic, thunderbolt) if that makes sense.
It would be a huge letdown to me if all this hubbub was over a phone two other carriers have.
I really don't think the announcement is going to be the Iphone. I doubt Sprint will even get Iphone on there service until the Iphone 5 is out with 4G and a dual core. Anyway this thread was meant to be a joke. See, the OP said that Sprint's big announcement will be that the Steelers won the Super Bowl, which would not be making the impossible, possible. I hope the Packers win just because they beat my Eagles and the Eagles actually should have won since they lost by 5 and the Pro Bowl field goal kicker missed 2 FG which would have been 6 points and the win. I guess I could take a little more pride in losing by so little to the eventual SB champs.
I highly doubt Sprint is going to spend the money to get the Iphone on their service. Just Google how much Verizon will spend on Iphone. If Sprint does just expect some serious rate hikes on your next plan.

Actually, realistically, retooling the iphone for Sprint would take minimal effort. No iphone is or ever will be branded, so basically the Verizon one is simply a "cdma iphone" programmed for Verizon. I'm not HOPING for this as the announcement, as I actually switched to android from an iphone, and I'm happy I did, so I don't care either way about a Sprint i-turd. Just saying it would take very little to do it.

Well I will probably get flack for this, but here goes. Before you get all happy about this aquisition by Google. Remember who Motorola has been in bed with for the better part of their phone "Greatness" , Verizon . The original we're going to throttle your data, you better not be tethering (even though your paying for unlimited) , if we can't charge you for it you can't do it, we're going to control everything you do on your phone carrier. So even though it's Google new company, the employees are still the old regime. With the old habits, especially the Executives. I'll always remember a quote from one of Verizon's press releases stating " the Companies bottom line is always the most important aspect in considerations involving customers" . I understand this true for any company. But to say it in a press release like that says a lot about how they perceive their customer base. Yes, I understand this is only my opinon
No flack here, you make avalid point

Wouldn't make sense. HTC makes great phones but do not have the large patent portfolio that Moto has built up over many years in the mobile industry.
^ Shift Faced
i live in seattle and googles from redmond, theyve been on the news about this quite a bit and theyve even said themselves they just wanted the patent portfolio to help in defending android and the developers against apple, microsoft and the rest of the other bull**** patent trolls.
I see where this will certainly help Google, and Motorola, with regards to patent lawsuits. But how will this help Samsung, and HTC? Is Google going to step in, and say "Get out of here, patent troll....check this out....PWNT!!!"

I'd imagine that since these patents are typically incredibly vague such as "scrolling menus" that if Apple sues HTC or Samsung over infringing on one of their vaguely worded patents then Google could jump in and brandish one of their equally vague patents and say that Google actually has the patent for it, not Apple.

just so yall know i didnt see a splash screen for this new motoroogle or googlerola or whatever you want lol (it has only been a day) so i decided to make one. I posted it on im.nick.hellos new thread for splash screens along with some others i made.
I just have to wait for him to convert them into splash img format and a flashable.
SO GO CHECK IT OUT
BTW: I hope im not hijacking the thread. I dont think i am because it is technically about the thread in a way. but if i am please set me straight!
Edit: In regards to the post above there is no real reason to buy HTC
1)they are doing great on there own
2) HTC would not give up sense and google would not want sense
3) HTC would be like 3X the amount that Motorola was
4)Motorola already had made the commitment to android and that was its sole operating system unlike HTC where they make phones for WP7 and Android.
4) Motorolas patent portfolio is much bigger
5) Motorolas not getting sued lol
Just my 2 cents theres probably other reasons too
Google did it for the Patents
I heard its to help cover their a$$ with apple lawsuits

You know it is,to go from having 317 patents to over 17,000 sure change the game. Literally from defense to offense, see if they give apple some of their own medicine .

Guess most of us are a**holes or morons according to this survey

wow - stupid but fun to waste 5 minutes on.
http://blog.hunch.com/?p=51781
that was probably commissioned by apple,
Iphone - older, more affluent
Android - younger, less affluent
Looking ahead, iphone = doomed to a ~10% niche market, just like the Mac
Put me in the asshole camp.
It states that android users are 50% more likely to use Yahoo mail.
I call bull**** on that one.

86% more likely to live in the country
well that's obviously because AT&T has crap coverage in rural areas. Same can be said about iPhone more likely to live in the city. Verizon is better at least, but around here if you live in the sticks you are best going with US Cellular who obviously doesn't carry the iPhone, but they have a few Android devices.

Well, if 2 out of 1000 iPhoners have Yahoo mail and 3 out of 1000 Androiders, then that would be "50% more likely," even though essentially nobody on either side actually has it.
It's probably true, I would bet, because most of the iPhone people I know don't even realize that AOL isn't the only email provider on the internet.

Actually, it says that iphone users are "more likely to say they lead," which I tend to believe. Studies have shown that "popular kids" and those who think they are trend-setters tend to be the biggest followers (copying what they see on TV, movies, ads, etc.). iPhone users believe they are leaders and trend-setters because they're doing what they see other popular people do, but clearly there's a difference between saying you're a leader and actually being one.

Yeah, I was going to come here and say that might also mean android users are just more likely to have multiple email addresses.
Edit: And now that I've continued reading, I see that is not case. I'm skeptical. Though we are more likely to be gmail users, so, maybe we don't need the other crap.
I had to come comment on the "122% more likely to want a pretty looking, but worthless, device" that's the iPhone demo to a T
(not that the iPhone is worthless, but they definitely have that attitude.)
That is the dumbest **** I ever read. Apple propaganda. Sad thing is it will actually work on someone.
I suppose the take home message here is that android has come full circle. We here on XDA aren't your average android user anymore. The average android user is someone that went to best buy and figured "if I'm going to pay ____, I may as well get a smartphone."
In other words, this is really a testament to the extent that android has done away with the concept of "dumbphones," more than it is a statement about user differences.
This may as well be iPhone users vs the public.

Well, I don't think "propaganda" is fair. I don't think anyone is trying to pull one over on anyone, or make a point.
It's just important to keep in mind that this is a self selecting survey, with no verification. Perhaps iPhone users exaggerated, or weren't quite honest with themselves, as someone already hinted at. To me a large number of the answers iPhone look like they're trying too hard to look special/deep. "Look at me! My fav ice cream is salted caramel, my fav food is tapas, my fav fruit is the clementine!"
Edit: not to mention a lot of the points are "iPhone users are more likely to spend money, regardless of the return" Well, no kidding. Maybe way more iPhone users use gogoinflight because android users, correctly, IMO, think paying $13 to have internet access for 3 hours is absurd. So, you can take a lot of these data points either way.
whats the problem with clementines?

The fruit-to-effort ratio is too low.
I mean really, if I'm going to go to all that trouble to peel the darn thing, I should get a little more for the effort. iPhone people probably have an app to peel it for them.

I LOL'd at this one. "fruit-to-effort ratio"...that made my day so far, thank you for that.
And FWIW, I had never heard of salted caramel ice cream until recently. And it is fricking delicious. I love caramel anything (within reason of course) so that makes sense.

i take it youve never peeled one then, because the peel comes off of them way easier than an orange, and they have no pith. pound wise, they are cheaper too if you buy in a 10 lb bag.
