Now with photon news - Atrix 4G General

Do you think this will help atrix development, as they probably share similiar dev trees? Or no, am I just completely silly

I'm hoping it'll help with things such as HDMI mirroring. I haven't checked anything about the chipset but if there's FM then perhaps that may come in handy.
Glad we've got the awesome Droid 3 cam as well. Maybe there'll be other tidbits to discover

I would expect it would help development. I've noticed kenn has taken a few pieces from his atrix roms and has already built a pseudo rom for the photon. I'm hoping for photon developers to reciprocate.

Not sure if the EPIC 4G will have all on it's own, but I do see there is a lot of support for the Galaxy S series.. CDMA usually get less dev support than GSM devices, but that has been changing lately.
XDA used to cater mostly to HTC devices.. They have since expanded to different manufacturers.. And there is also the SDX Dev community...

nope never. the devs are all working now for Sprint and are going to charge for their ROMs
Right now, what I can see, it looks like joeykrim and noobnl and a couple of others or so are cracking away at it. Most of the "action" seems to be happening over at sdx atm.
Unless some of the devs from the other galaxy s phones come over here and share the love, I think "we" might be on our own (so to speak). I saw a few placeholders for roms in the dev section. They might be doing stuff behind the scenes too.
Now I don't have too much free time on my hands. One thing I was pondering was if someone gathered the info from the other galaxy s phones and tried to determine what, if any, might be similarities under the hood. Like was rooting different, same or similar between models? The only apparent difference seems to be the epic has flash led and hardware keyboard. I don't know how much those two things could possibly change the structure of things (hardware and software) between all the models. I suspect there will be quite a few similarities after the dust settles.

They problem is that the epic cant use roms from the other sgs phones like the others can because of the camera, keyboard & touchwiz changes. The drivers are not fully released so I am unsure how porting roms to the epic would work out. I think the epic cant really depend on the other sgs phones for development.

I agree with you 100%. I get 27% discount from work and that still could not get me to keep the epic for more then 1 day. I cant believe all the apps\features they left out that the others sgs phones have.
SDX is hard at work on it and the devs there, and some of the users/testers (me), are trying to keep both sides (XDA and SDX) informed on anything that happens on either side.
SDX is really a great community; I've been with them since I purchased my Moment. And it's only because of them that my phone was usable.
I expect that all the missing features and more will be added to the Epic before too long especially if both communities work together with no drama.
I know everyone loves custom roms, but what is it that we want to see from the dev community?
As much as I would love to see custom roms flying out of every orifice, I only loaded custom roms on my EVO to get it up to speed (fps hack, better performance, etc). Also to increase battery life... but it didn't seem to help THAT much.
I'm pretty content with my Epic. The everyday stuff I do on this phone already works perfectly. Games, movies, music, web browsing, camera, etc. It's nuts how fast it is, so I won't be needing to overclock. The only thing I want to see from the dev community right now is root+nand unlocked. I must have root access... it's killing me.

Droid 3> Or <X?

Anyone play around with the droid 3 or upgrade from the X to it? I am thinking of using my upgrade on it.. I miss having a keyboard. I was waiting for the bionic but who knows when if it will come out, plus there's no keyboard..4G really isn't relevant for where I live yet.
Idk still wait for the bionic but if you don't need the 4g then the others seem more apealing. But if you get the bionic there will be plenty of new stuff for it, no doubt they will realease honeycomb for it if its popular enough.

Xoom + DX = bluetooth tether for free without root. Also works with D1, D2, D2G, D2R2D2, and DPro. Probably will work with D3 and Bionic. Oh, and bluetooth tether with these Moto phones also will work with a Samsung Tab 10.1, and probably any other Honeycomb tablet. Regular adhoc Wifi hotspot doesn't work. Thanks Moto
You should be able to do that with any other Bluetooth Android phone, too. However, Bluetooth data transfer rates are ridiculous...you probably don't notice on 3G, but if you go to LTE, you'll see horrible performance doing that.

The D3 is a nice phone but Im holding out til the Bionic hits.
I've got 4G where I live already and want 4G for video chatting.
4G will provide a smoother Video chat experience when compared to a 3G connection.
Got a buddy of mine with the D3 and I was comparing it to an X2 and I would take the D3 over the X2 if I had to get a phone right now this minute. But its sounds more and more like the BIONIC is going to be the device to have. LTE and pretty much the same as the D3 in every other way. The D3 I think is a little late to the party at this point. It should have come out shortly before the but LTE push to hold people over but now I am afraid its going to get swept under the rug.
Then like some of the other posts said the Samsung devices are really frickin nice right now and that SuperAMOLED is incredible to look at.

On topic:
I would wait another couple of weeks for the bionic or any news of a SGSII. The Bionic has a home splash now at Verizon, and we all have thought for a while that August would be the right time anyways. Judge for your self from there, as the Bionic is rummored to be a slightly different beast. (probably a 3g phone vs. 4g Flagship type thing)
And less on-topic

Not Necessary. Look at the Atrix, I have some faith left for open boot loaders on future phones. Also, I love moto build quality and style. If you don't like moto phones, and the thread is asking specifically of a moto device, inside a thread for a moto device, you should probably take a long and hard look at your priorities.
Yeah besides some issues with my last DROID X Motorola has been rock solid hardware and great for reception and to me lately quality beats easy rooting. I have my X and three OG DROIDS my wife and sister are due to upgrade in november so we will see what's hot then but Motorola will still be the first phones I look at.

Mmm... this topic has been brought up so so so many times...
It's hard to do anything when Google is keeping the Honeycomb source locked up. As far as I know the other Honeycomb tablets have been modified by the manufacturing company to alter certain parts of the Android OS and such, thus allowing for a bit more flexibility when it comes to development.
As far as the Xoom goes, it's the only official pure stock vanilla Google experience tablet, and Google is keeping it locked down without further notice. It's assumed that they will be ready to fully release the source for everything when Ice Cream Sandwich launches in the near future.
If the devs could use magic, they would. Until then... we must wait for ICS. The Xoom is Google's baby, as it was the first of it's kind to start the dawn of the Honeycomb era. When they are good and ready, the development scene for the Xoom will skyrocket in short notice. Trust me.
Also, the only other thing the developers can try besides just tweaking stuff is port the Galaxy Tab 10.1's Touch Wiz Rom to the Xoom. But it's a step back as it's only Android 3.1 while we are already on 3.2.
Someone should get a job at Google and leak the Honeycomb source and then quit. That would be epic.

Also the other devices are incorporating Xoom or Galaxy bits and catching up. This is the problem with the device officially having the newest OS out there. The will be a day when the Xooms' longevity will be evident.
As for now we have the latest and greatest already. It is hard for us flashoholics but there's a reason so much is going on with the Asus and Acer. They needed help hence the Xoom and Galaxy ports. Its lonely at the top. By the way we have Tiamat which in my opinion is the gold standard.

Fully sourced custom Roms. That's what everybody is looking for. With that you would have new features, tweaks, and abilities that a stock Rom would never give you in a million years. Tiamat is the gold standard and the other devices wish they had them on their side. The team is just amazing to have created a modified stock Rom experience that works better than default stock. And when they are able to create fully customized fully sourced custom Roms... a loss for words...
Don't feel to bad because the other devices roms are usually referenced to our stock roms.

Awesome! How they don't realize from the past with Android custom devs how much further android could be catapulted past the competition I just don't know.
I also don't get how people are so quick to hop on the latest updates when, even without the source being released, previous versions customers by devs blow away whatever little appetizers Google farts out to us.
Anyhow, I gotta say the Xoom has come an awful long way considering the SC hasn't even been released.

And you know that how? I'm one of those "everybody" and I'm not looking for that. I'm looking for someone to take over Ubuntu-development. Even Asus EEE, Acer Iconia and Samsung Galaxy Tab have Ubuntu-ROMS, but we have some crap-ass VNC-Ubuntu. If they can do it (especially considering the Asus EEE and Acer Iconia have the same Tegra 2), then it should be possible for us too. That is what I'm looking for, so don't talk for everybody please.

It's just a general statement, not literally meaning every single person. It's just something one says, and it's not meant to be taken literally as an individual. But ok: "A lot" of people are looking forward to the fully sourced, and full customization from a true custom Rom. And generally speaking... the first thing the average root user thinks of are the custom Roms when they hear the term "source code". Ultimately that's what it would mean when the source code is released. The devs will then have the proper tools to start developing new custom Roms. They will then begin to flood the market in due time with new and unique Roms, as was the same with the OG Droid.

Well I'm sure it's a valid point for you, but being a casual Android user who roots, having an Ubuntu based rom makes no sense to me. I admit I don't even know what an Ubuntu rom is for. Is it something like porting Windows OS into the tablet? If so, I doubt many users care for something like this since rom development to them is more about tweaking, optimizing, themeing and adding functions to an Android based rom. Porting other OSes is a lot more niche and caters to a smaller group of users.
So since the Honeycomb source is indefinitely locked up by Google, themed and overclocked Honeycomb is as good as we can get for now. The next best thing to wait for is Samsung to update the Galaxy Tab 10.1 to Honeycomb 3.2 and we'll probably get Touch Wiz ported over.

you're next phone manufacturer

what's you're next phone manufacturer
and do you plan to change you're atrix in near future?
The Atrix is pretty good for me, enough so that I'm not planning on switching any time soon. As in, once my AT&T contract is up in a year, unlock it and take it to one of T-Mobile's value plans any time soon. It runs ICS so well that I'd have a hard time believing that it wouldn't be able to handle future versions of Android with an at least usable speed.
But when I do, it'll probably be a Samsung. Motorola has next to no dev support unless its a Droid (The Atrix seems like a happy accident to me from that standpoint), and HTC is half-assing its bootloader unlock solution. Software matters more to me than hardware, so its either a Nexus or something with lots of dev support, and that means Samsung.
Still waiting for the Sony Ion to surface. Thought the SGS3 would be better, so giving that a miss, and AT&T keeping One X bootloader locked just downright pissed me off. Rethinking carrier now too.

Atrix with lapdock. Nothing can beat this combo at performance/price.Just bought me one and overally satisfied. It will keep me busy for a while until motorola releases a new razr hd maxx with better specs and 3300mah battery, most importantly with unlocked bootloader. Otherwise atrix forever.
partially leaving the atrix community tomorrow. Having terrible hardware problems with my phone. The in ear speaker doesn't work. The external speaker is starting to break on me. Screen has a terrible banding around the outer edge of the phone. Bought a galaxy nexus from the play store. Hopefully this phone turns out better than the atrix for me. http://www.bsquare.com/snapdragon-mobile-development-platform.aspx
As an international user I can tell you I´ll think very carefully wether to get another motorola or not, and probably not. I´m very happy with my atrix but the fact that being looking for AT&T support, updates and roms obligates me thinking the true necesity to overcome this mobile life style, when there are companies like samsung which delivers international support by the minute.
If you are an US costumer you are relly good with Moto, as their upgrade/update forum claims to unleash ICS for every US device quite soon. Not the same to Int´l which still is in "Studying for future development" or whatever...
So, be wise and decide well
Already left. (not by choice, i dropped my atrix and repaired the screen. I broke it again a week later and also the charging port.) Picked up a Samsung Galaxy Note on att. there are a few developers and belive me i know a dead device i developed for the zte warp untill the androidforums.com mods told me there was no use move on.... the diference is there is no "community development" when multiple people work together to build the best rom possible and there id no themeing either which is a substancial part of any development community. i respect you evol4g otherwise i wouldnt have asked you to my team you are doing a great job keep it going the point of this post was to motivate some of the other developers that have been dormant since jellybean came out you all know that they are out there.
Mostly because people are waiting for 4.2. A lot of the current ROMs are similar and very stable so no need to really make new ROMs unless its say Touchwiz, Sense, or any other custom Android firmware. Wait until 4.2 and devs will probably start making more ROMs.
Incorrect thread is incorrect.

Maybe we should all learn how to develop ROMs. That go's for all non developers in this community, including me. If there was any guides on how to build really good ROMs I think the nexus community will be more understanding of how it is to be a developer and evolve the community.
