The new SE Xperia Arc looks good.
Opinions on which one you would choose...
Personally I will never again buy a Sony Ericsson phone. Ever! Not after the debacle that was the X10.
They have a horrible habit of messing the software up in a big way and then taking ages - if at all - to fix it.
Nah, I'll definitely stick with my DHD I think

i got rid of my SEx10 for my DHD, now the wait for the 2.1 upgrade for my X10 was well worth it but , i think im going to stick to my DHD for the time being as the ARC would be good should you want an upgrade
Sony means good hardware and horrible software support. By the time Gingerbread was releasing they were finally getting around to updating the X10 to Eclair.
If you are ok with being stuck with the same software version for the next two years I'd say go Sony.

The Arc looks like a great handset but Sony (along with Samsung and LG in my experience) seem to have a history of failing to support their phones as soon as new ones come out... so personally I'd rule it out because of that.
Still, who needs manufacturer support when we have XDA
I had to get rid of my X10 too, i would not recommend getting an SE phone, at least not at launch.
The x10 was a joke. (Although still the best looking phone ive seen to date)
i have to be honest the Arc was tempting me. It looks absolutely awesome, it has HDMI out which i really wish the DHD could have, and it has this really hyped up camera technology which is great for low light photos i hear (SE cameras are great in general). Also people are praising the screen which is using bravia technology.
But alas, sony's really poor support with software, and thir god aweful ui on their phones is keeping me from getting one. I hear the X10 still doesnt have custom roms on it yet. that's another major drawback for it imo.
I'll be sticking with HTC for now.
Having only just got rid of the x10, i feel sony was a really big let down....custom roms are only just turning up, unlocking the bootloader looks to be very long way away. and the kernel which at this mo can still not be flashed and is holding what could of been a great phone back. Not many Devs working on the handset so it will take longer.
Sony are ment to have good cameras but the x10 was ok ish..

Exactly what I was thinking.
I mean don't get me wrong the X12 looks amzing and feature packed but after what happened to the X10 I don't think I can trust SE again with software updates.
There have been a lot of cool phones been announced at CES but tbh no other manufacturer has made a phone that I personally would want to buy, i'm stuck on HTC! I am really happy with the desire HD!
The main reason for xda exsisted was HTC phones, no other phones gets as much support dev wise, that why I always buy HTC, of course they great hardware and experience. Samsung come a close 2nd these days.
But Sony Arc and even LG Star might look like great phones but with no community support, they are dead in my eyes.
The only other phone I'd consider which isn't HTC or Sammy would be Atrix the new moto phone, but then again moto in Europe has poor support, and they tend have stupid bootloader.
i have a contract up in april and i think i will get the LG star the screen looks so good and a good battery music to my ears
also just incase you think i am anti HTC i have DHD my wife has desire and my little girl has my old HD2 running cm7 gingerbread on nand.
i dumped my x10 after their growing debate on multi touch and its poor battery life
ever since i gotten my DHD i'm so pleased i finally got HTC sense + the HTC keyboard that i didn't need to hack to get
don't think i'll switch back unless the arc has a better battery, i'm not too pleased with my DHD's battery
My wife will be getting the Arc on release as if she got a DHD she would always be confusing hers for mine (as she tends to lose hers a few times a day!).
I'm looking forward to having a play on it. I doubt very much it'd be worth an upgrade from a DHD, but for people on a Desire or below it might be worth a shout. Wife is still on a Hero, so should be a nice big upgrade for her.

Especially true if she isn't an uber geek like most of us are. Normal people aren't overly concerned about being stuck on, say Eclair, if Eclair is providing for them the functionality they require.
However if you know about these forums and frequent them I will bet money you are not a normal user so in that case the X12 is still a bit of a gamble for reasons already discussed. I for one am confident that we will get official Gingerbread with HTC sense this quarter and it wouldn't surprise me if the Desire got it in short order too.
As for X12 users they may well be stuck on Gingerbread forever. That wouldn't be a bad thing because its hard fault Gingerbread it feels like the coming of age for Android to me but when Honeycomb comes I will want it even if the new features don't change the way I use my phone on a daily basis, only because I am a geek and want new features to play with.

Yeah, exactly. She won't even let me root her phone so I can put FroYo on it! She even refused to put the OTA to 2.1 on until I begged her as it would fix the things she was moaning about!
So I think the Arc will probably be ideal for her. I'm sticking to my S-OFF, Rooted DHD though
There is a video of the arcs UI in action in engadget and let's just say Sony is still bad with software it looks very slow and lags a bit in the video. I guess don't might work it out before release but the if the x10 is any thing to go buy then I would advise to stay away from the arc.
Imo Sony and any compact for that matter would sell loads more units if they would just put stock android builds on their devices as it stands only HTC sense seems decent and even then I'd prefer stock

I will not buy a SonyEricsson any time soon again...
I have my X10 lying in a drawer only as a toy, and spare phone...
The fact that Sonyericsson is lightyears behind HTC with firmware and other software, and the fact that they abandon a device like the flagship x10 after only 8 month on the marked, speak for it self...
And when they say that the new ARC is 4 times faster than the old x10, they hide the fact that the x10 also could be more than 4 times faster with optimized and new firmware...! the xda devs have proved that already...
Sonyericsson say they never will update the x10 to android 2,3 or even to 2,2, as they say that the users will gain nothing from that...
So x10 will be stuck on android 2,1...
And ARC users need to expect the same will happen to them also, don't expect to get newer firmware than what you buy the phone with...
The ARC don't even have dualcore, that many other manufacturs are planning to send out now...
I will personal NOT buy it, I would look at the LG X2 or wait for HTC to send out new handsets...
Buy a Sonyericsson and expect to get ****ed by them...

Never buy or wait for a smartphone from SE. it is simply not worth it.
they promise you whatever you want to hear/read but they fail to deliver in all categories. i bought a p990i and and xperia-x1 and the story is always the same: first they announce a model, then they move the release over and over again up to 6-12 months. they rarely make more then 1 update/hotfix. they fail to upgrade the OS in a reasonable time (if they even consider it). they drop support on phones pretty fast.
service, support and updates: FAIL
i did observe this on: p990i, p1, x1, x10 ...
they even released android 1.6 phones in the US after most other companys switched to frojo ...
-QuadWord
Dual cures core phones are not exciting me much at all. They are worthless until there is an Android os which is optimized for them, and apps won't benefit until they are optimized for dual core.
Just like when the first 64 bit desktop cpu came out. Most people were still using 32 bit os on them until very recently because most software was and still is 32 bit anyway.

Must say i do like it, seems much faster but after being on my 2nd handset with the x10 and still trying to get it replaced sony's customer service has put me off buying another handset from them, its a shame it does look a nice phone. Not really bothered about the late update nonsense but i'm sure they will improve this after last year

I doubt we will see anything from Arc's UXP on our X10. What's more, Arc may be a nice phone, however the support given by Sony for X10 is just pathetic, that's not how you treat your very first Android product. My next "Green Phone" won't be Sony, that's for sure.
Wish you good luck with Arc guys (for those who will decide to buy it)!

First thing i would need is to be able to switch the buttons on the arc. Why in the living H-bomb would they put the back button on the opposite side. OMFG why.
Good video anyways, got to see most of the features. if you can call them features
I would want one, but, no front-facing camera in this day and age makes me kinda sad.
Hmmm. I still have a year on contract with Docomo anyway, by then, the PlayStation phone will be out!
They are still a little behind in the hardware side aswell, its basically the same hardware as the x10, most handets this year will be dual core etc desire HD 700mb ram they have just added more to the x10 to bring it up to 512 which tbh should have been in the first place
There's an Arc forum already, so posting something related to that new phone in the proper forum would be better
may do was really about the possible upgrades for us
You can post this in the new Xperia Arc forum.
I think some of the devs will port the Arc rom to the X10, then we'll have the new things.
I just want the picture and music widgets...
Forget the arc's rom I want pure naked froyo. I don't see how anyone can say no to vanilla froyo.

come on xperia x8 user. rise up...and wake up. there will be no update for x8. even do you can install custom roms. but, it wouldn't do no good. cannot run with the current specs. i follow x8 for too long now and i already trade my x8 with samsung galaxy mini. its really worth it. yes, i admit the UI and phone is not that good, but the Android is too good to be true. imagine a low cost phone can run android 2.3.4 and have 284mb of RAM. trust me you wouldn't regret when you buy this phone.

Oh yeah, we "wouldn't regret" buying a phone that's like the x8 with more ram (and slightly more internal storage), but a smaller and crappier (256K) screen. Come on...
I know that sony won't update the X8. It's no use doing that to them, because they want to sell newer phones, but I would never go to a smaller screen.
We dont need se updates , we have doixnah, racht and lot of other great devs and community which making x8 better

Just by looking at the screen of galaxy mini you can say x8 is far better. Besides we have fully working CM6 (2.2) and CM7(2.3) ROMs that WORK quiet nicely on x8 hardware.

its just the arc which is a bit too pricy compared to the fab htc sensation and samsung galaxy s2
and till the next set of phones arrive it will be january
Could not agree more.
Only if Gingerbread DX perfected with fully support for flash lite at least,
then I'll keep my x8 for 1 year more. Go to H3LL S.E!!
Hi XDA.
just purchased sony Arc S, and was so disappointed with the sony's UI overlay. i come from HTC, which i thought wasn't too bad. Sony, its a real eye sore.
wanted to get as generic looking android possible, and after searching, thinking of going with CyanogenMod 7.
however, after hours searching, could not find any specific article about modding arc S. there are plenty of information on ARC though.
my question was, can i just use the ARC tutorials and mod my ARC S?
cause only CPU is really different.
however, that being said, it would be a bummer if after modding, my ARC S runs at same speed as ARC.
sorry about such a noob question, but would really appreciate some guidance from experts here.
thanks in advance!

CyanogenMod 7 is for both Arc and Arc S so you could flash it. Most of the modding guide applies to Arc S as well. Don't work about your CPU speed it's hardware not software so unless you under clock your processor you should get good speed. DoomKernel works for Arc s and Arc, it has the clock speed upto 2Ghz. So go ahead have fun
Hello people,
I want to give my thanks to Sony Ericsson, because they have done what other manufacturers failed to do.
First of all, they are the only manufacturer so far that has pushed verizon into releasing kernel sources, and they are probably the only manufacturer that doesn't get pushed around by Verizon.
The reason (IMO) that we can't unlock bootloaders for CDMA phones Via SE's site is because Verizon just buy the hardware with the source and shift and change. If Verizon say that they will not allow unlocking of bootloaders, then it will not happen, because after all it is the Verizon Xperia Play and Sony Ericsson have little control over it.
Thanks for promising an ICS upgrade for us, even though our phone can be considered quite low spec compared to other devices. I don't get the X10 users at all, they say that Sony Ericsson is bad because they won't update the X10 to ICS even though HTC won't update there Desire S, Incredible S, DHD, Thunderbolt which have only been released since late last year.
Also, having a member on behalf of SE on this forum and part of the dev community is awesome, I had to blink a few times to read what the article said about the OFFICIAL ICS BETA.
Does any other manufacturer give you a way to unlock your bootloader, push verizon to release sources, and upgrade a single core £150 phone (£200 when I got it) to ICS?
To the whining x10 users who are ranting at SE for not giving them an ICS upgrade -> be thankful they gave you Gingerbread, how old is the x10 now? 18 months?
Google have a policy IIRC that a phone can only updated if it is less than 18 month old (why the first nexus did not get 4.0)
And thanks for bringing us so many Xperia Play optimized games! Almost 2 are released every week!
Keiran
You forget that beforehand, Sony Ericsson left the phones pretty much out of date. Xperia X8 never got dual touch even though it was possible (and it was done). Sony only updated the X10 to Gingerbread because of the outrage caused by the infamous "our Eclair is better than Froyo" tweet, and leaving those users without Froyo at all. Sony is atoning pretty nicely, but its previous record wasn't all that fancy. Keep in mind the iPhone 3GS, which is fairly in the range of a Xperia X8, and its update record.
Besides, the Xperia Play didn't exactly launch at 150 pounds. It launched at thrice that sum, and it was heavily discounted because of poor sales.

Yes but at least they have changed. At least they listen to the community and released gingerbread for the x10.
Dropping prices has got Sony written all over it, look at the PS3, launch was £425 and now you can get a 250GB slim one for £275, around 40% less.
Sony Ericsson have made the best phones for as long as I can remember. I don't know why anyone would buy a non-Sony Ericsson phone.
I came from a Motorola phone (never again will I make that mistake) and I absolutely love this phone. Its my first android phone where I truly feel that SE is doing all they can for their customers. I mean I was totally floored yesterday when I saw that Verzion allowed SE to release the source kernel. I mean HTC and Verizon are all cozy but even then HTC doesnt really allow for kernel sources. Maybe for other US carrers but not verizon. This is needless to say a huge reason why I am thrilled to have my phone. I can do with it as I please and SE is right there doing what they can to keep their customers happy and on the ball. I mean our single core phone is getting ICS, thats awesome. So I would also like to thank Sony Ericcson for their truly amazing work. I think I've said it elsewhere, but when I first got into Android I had 2 phones I was eyeying.. the Xperia X10 (great hardware but was limited to 1.6) or an Acer Liquid E (almost as good hardware, running 2.2) - went with the Acer. Since then SE's really stepped up their game, and I'd say this phone is second only to the Nexus line for upgrades. The Acer didn't even last a year.
Now, all I want is an Xperia Play with a non pitiful amount of built in storage and I'd be happy. Dual Core wouldn't hurt either

Could you or someone else fill me in on what ICS is and also what the kernel release means?
I have to agree tho that this phone sold poorly. Heck even the accessories for it are on huge discount and sale because nobody wants them

ICS = Ice Cream Sandwich = Android 4.0
Kernel sources mean that sufficiently development oriented people (like DooMLoRD or kerianftw) can develop custom kernels to flash to the play to expand usability of the phone (overclocking, cwm built into kernels, etc.) (I'm also looking into building a custom kernel, but I'm having issues that I'm asking DooM for help with)
My $.02 on why this phone hasn't sold to well it's that it was marketed as a niche phone, rather that a phone first with ability to play games second... that and what look like lackluster specs (single core compared to dual core, even tho that really didn't make a difference, yet) put people off to this phone
