Has anyone seen this video yet? It's posted by androiddevelopers,it looks like google headquarters,and they're putting up a gingerbread man. I think 2.3 is coming... SOON.

Same here,I just hope it doesn't look like MiUi. I know a lot of people like it,but if I wanted an iPhone,I would have an iPhone,not a Nexus.

Man you don't understand miui then. The general standpoint on a design for an icon is universal. Just because the iPhone used the format first doesn't make it there's. Android is all about open and customization without too much work. IPhone doesn't offer widgets or ease of notifications. Android does. Just because miui looks like the iPhone doesn't mean it is. Miui is heavily based on backend mods. Stiff if implemented right can be a lot better than anything. I'm on miui right now and I love it. Sure its a little different but its functional for a heavy user if configured right with good placement of widgets and folders and icons.
Next time you hate on something... just don't. Everyone is working hard to bring the end user something useable and not trash. Either contribute or leech. If you leech don't comment bs like that.

I understand the whole don't hate on anything idea,and I agree with it. You like MIUI,it is your opinion and thats fine. I tried it for about a week,and it has a few elements that I do like,but as a whole,it felt too much like the iPhone for my taste. And this is after having both the original iPhone and the iPhone 3g,as well as the g1,cliq,cliq xt,hd2,and now the nexus. I have used all the operating systems,and if 2.3=MIUI,My nexus is going to continue to run enomther's theofficial like it has been.

Honestly, if MIUI really did contain elements of Gingerbread (like all the rumors everyone refers to), do you really think Google would just let it slide? Why can't we all realize that these devs put in some effin MAJOR framework overhauls into froyo, and didn't steal it from Google? If I was a dev behind MIUI, I'd be PISSED if people said that.

Calm down... Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. I too dislike the MIUI interface. The poster was just expressing, albiet inelligently, the reasons they do not like MIUI. That is no reason for your hostility...

Porting official Galaxy S Gingerbread ROM to Nexus S for Touchwiz

Hey guys.
As you already know, official Galaxy S Gingerbread ROM released.

That means we've got a "Gingerbread ROM with Touchwiz UI" !
So let's encourage developers to port it to Nexus S

That would be soooo awesome, but at this point the MT3G has more development than the Nexus...they even have honeycomb.

However, CM7 already has all it takes to make your phone look a lot like TouchWiz. It has the statusbar widgets, and the launcher can be customized to look a great deal like it. Is it the home widgets? Cause I'm sure there must be plenty of alternatives in the Market.
Heck, CM7 + ADW is even far more customizable. I don't see a reason why anyone would need TouchWiz at this point.

TW apps(camera, calendar, music player, video player), codecs...the launcher isn't a reason why people would want it imo.

I didn't, all this great hardware with crap apps to use. Doesn't even have zoom in the camera let alone 720p video recording.

Pretty sure it was Samsung's incompetence of releasing Android 2.2 in a timely fashion and ROMs basing off Samsung internal leaks with kernels that weren't open-sourced.
I personally don't care if someone ports TouchWiz. If they do, then great. I won't be using it but trying it out to play around with. There's a difference between requesting and something actually being done.

I would definitely like to have the choice of trying out Gingerbread TouchWiz. I've noticed that the Nexus S doesn't really have as much roms as I thought it would have. Maybe its because 2.3 is the latest software and it would defeat the purpose of putting 2.2 sense, 2.2 blur etc or its simply the fact that devs are holding out for dual core and quad core phones.

Most likely because of 2.2 and 2.3. Porting another FrameWork takes a lot of work. It's not that easy to do especially to get it working as a daily driver

Most people are obsessed with speed and latest and greatest, not what offers the most. They say TouchWiz is buggy but so is Gingerbread...obviously I could go on and on.

Why is there so much hostility with reference to Nexus S and development? Why do people consider the Nexus S inferior and not worthy of ROM development? It's a phone, people own it. If all you do is bash the phone and the community, what is your endgame? I say, the more ROMs the better, no matter what they are. And if development dies because of lack of interest, so be it, but let the natural course of the device play out.

That's not the issue anymore will those roms. Not to mention the only leg nexus has up the captivate is nfc and vanilla android. I like the touchwiz icons, maybe it is because i also use an iphone 4, but those stock app icons make me want to scream
And judging from the 2.3.3 has bricked my gps thread, i am getting less and less excited about owning a nexus s once it arrives with 850mhz 3g bands. Looks like samsung still cant get the gps right..now to see if they did something to the gs2.

Because I'm bored with default Android. I just want to try different things.
And yes Touchwiz is stupid, I hate it when I first saw that, especially lock-screen. But theme looks great.

the only think i'll be looking forward in a port from SGS to SNS are the mkv codecs and hardware play

Try the MIUI rom I think it's the rom that you're looking for.
@allgamer: in cm7 the hardware encoding actually works. 720p I smooth but no audio is being outputted. That's the only thing that needs to be fixed. Regular videos are fine.

The only reason I hated TouchWiz was because of bloatware, and Samsung's closed source issue which hindered development. Other than that, the UI looks great to me. The blue accents are nice and is easier to view than the gloomy green of the NS. Codecs are a major plus. The launcher is acceptable. My reason for moving to the NS is for CM7 as well as Google updates. Therefore, I'm all for porting the Galaxy S Gingerbread ROM.

Well Google did say they were holding back the source when HC came out. They didn't give a date or even if it would be released so tbh if they are now saying it will be released, it's an improvement on what we already knew.

Do you understand what you mean by custom ROMs? If you had a custom ROM, it would no longer be plain "vanilla" Android, which is what Bauxite wants. I agree with Bauxite, I think it's likely most custom ROMs will be inferior to the stock experience in Honeycomb, at least initially. Not that I wouldn't try a few on for size.
Fortunately without access to the Honeycomb source code we still have plenty of options to customize kernels, theme our interface, and overclock with root access.

I really don't think we need any roms either.
Nothing could really be done other than Themes and Deodexing.

Of course I do, but who cares about things like theming, and adding/removing built in apps. Sure CM7-like features would be nice, but the honeycomb experience itself is about as good as it gets

Hmm. I get what you're saying, I always like a vanilla OS too. However, until those hero devs of ours get a chance to play with the HC source I'm nit sure you can say this is as good as it gets.... just look at the awesome kernel work that's being done!

Maybe what we need its not Custom rom but theme builder or something like that. If its true honeycomb will be equal to every honeycomb tablet (apart from the widgets) then there is no point in modding... i mean there was a point in doing it with a outdated phone but not with honeycomb and future ice cream

Don't hold your breath on ever seeing the HC source. They have held it back, mainly in part because once it goes AOSP they effectively loose control of its final application. For example, think of all the craplets that come out of Shenzhen taking Android and putting in on devices it was not intended to go on which resulted in a exceeding poor product offering at ridiculously low prices. Now to you and I (read the enthusiast community) we understand that these are craplets and as such do not condemn Android tablets to the depths of hell for being a craplet because it was never intended for that application. However the general populace does not think the same way. They see an "Android tablet" for $100, think awesome, buy the POS and proceed to have a horrible "Android tablet" experience at which time they proceed to tell everyone they know that Android tablets are crap and yadda yadda yadda... And this in turn shapes the general perception which makes it harder and harder for Android to gain acceptance in the tablet space. So in order to gain foothold they developed a version of Android specific for tablets and I would bet good money they never had intentions of releasing HC to AOSP. This is unfortunately the only way that they can control how this OS is used, because they know for a fact if they released it, it would only be a matter of days before you started seeing people trying to put HC on phones, which it was never intended for, or putting it on craplets which results in a significantly substandard experience. So instead you had a decision made to wait until you had convergence in the Android OS again (read ICS) at which point all devices will exist on the same OS, and you can correct the shortcuts that were taken in HC to get a product that works as well as it does given such a short development period.
Bottom line is, we may not agree with the decision, and we certainly by no means have to like the decision, but if you look at the problems objectively it makes sense.

Finally, some sanity in this thread.

Samsung "TouchWiz" Android is an optimized version of Android

Samsung "TouchWiz" Android had been optimized for S5PC110 (Hummingbird), not because of UI. They optimized for their own processor and many of the optimization are not in AOSP branch.
CyanogenMOD has been optimizing own version of Android for all devices. AOSP is like bare minimum for devices like Nexus S / Nexus One / HTC Dream. We may have some of the Samsung optimized stuff due to Gingerbread. I wouldn't go back to AOSP because of the bare minimum. I would go for CyanogenMOD rather than AOSP because it has been optimized for all CPUs like Cortex A8/A9/ARM11.

I am saying Samsung TouchWiz is not just a UI, it contain some of the most optimized version of android for Hummingbird Cpu.

Well, I'm still using it. And I think my tastes overall pretty good.
I like trying new themes and apps, but Android is decent without much tinkering and TouchWiz may be around the right level. I have owned my Epic since last November and if I didn't like the UI I would have tried another by now.
That's not to say I never will, but Samsung didn't foul up at least. I'll be surprised if Gingerbread TouchWiz is noticeably different, although I am intrigued by v4.0 on the SGS 2, since it's been highly praised and the videos are interesting.

you all realize everyone who has an epic is using touchwiz right?? unless you are on CM, or MIUI or some other rare AOSP port instance... its more than just a launcher.. its the entire framework... and thats what noobnl is getting at..

So a launcher you get from the Market which changes the theme of your phone is nothing but an overlay, or what? I can disable TW in app controls. I used the plain Android launcher after clearing the default and decided I liked TW enough to go back to it. At least, I tried it in Eclair. If that option is missing from Froyo or later versions, that's news to me.

TWLauncher.apk is just the Touchwiz based launcher... your phone is still using the touchwiz framework and there isn't anything you can do to get rid of that short fo flashing MIUI CM7 or AOSP, which are all only semi functioning......

He's not referring to the UI, launcher, widgets, ect. TouchWiz is Samsung's UI, just like HTC has Sense. He speaking to the optimizations Samsung makes to Android to in order to take advantage of the proprietary hardware. You'll notice this right away if you use the Nexus S. No codec support, the camera is a step down from the Epic (at least software wise) and it doesn't pull the same frames per sec the Epic can. Samsung does work some magic with the Galaxy S phones. If you don't believe that then play with a Nexus S and you'll see many of the advantages that the Epic has over the Nexus S.......
Think of it the same way you would a computer. Most run windows but OEM's tend to optimize or customize the windows installation to take advantage of the their specific hardware.

I see. So (let me understand and correct if necessary) noobnl's original post is to let us know that we basically are going to have particularly good code for TW-sourced ROMs in Android 2.3 due to better hardware optimization?
This makes sense in light of Samsung making Google's latest flagship phone, I guess.

TouchWiz is a blessing and a curse. I detest the UI and that fact that it makes development more difficult. However, Sammy's version of Android is optimized for the Galaxy S hardware, drivers, ect. Although the same could probably be said about most devices. OEM's will generally optimize their versions of any OS to take advantage of their own hardware.

He's basically saying that AOSP is like when you just install Windows and its using the generic Windows GPU driver and its all wonky and just scrolling a web page is glitchy, but it works with literally every video card in existence. Touchwiz is like installing the newest Nvidia or ATI driver so that the OS knows exactly what hardware you have and how to utilize it, so the experience is as optimized as it can be. Cyanogenmod is somewhere inbetween those two points.

I thought this was common knowledge.

I hate the Touchwiz

Stuck with an unrooted Verizon sg3 for now and can't for the life of me figure out why the f these Asian manufacturers think we need their crappy overlay. HTC included. Vanilla ICS and GB are so smooth and pretty why ruin it? Someone tell these idiots to leave the OS alone and concentrate on the hardware. Ughhhh... Ranting and venting early morning, sorry

Manufacturers like to make their phones different, otherwise they'd all be the same phones just with different hardware, and normal consumers typically don't pay attention to hardware. So they have to advertise new features that they have in the software, like S Voice and stuff.

samsung doesn't offer the nexus because it realizes people dont like touchwiz...

I like Touchwiz personally. So I guess they make it for people like me . I have had this the international version and both versions of the One X (all rooted) and the out of the box lte galaxy s3 has been the best for me. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

OP why didn't you get the Nexus? No one forced you to get the S3. This why Samsung offers so many models....choices.

So install apex/nova launcher and get that vanilla ics feeling

For a more clean/ aosop feel go with apex. I personally LOVE go launcher ex.
Just go to market search launcher
Themes a few good ones people really like: apex, nova , go launcher, ???

I think all OEMs should give options. Vanilla or their overlay. I have an S3 but I really like Sense 4.0 from HTC. While the HOX was nice...It just was not for me over all.
But that option may be hard for OEMs to do.

I installed Apex Launcher, stacked all my apps and absolutely love it. Not having to scroll through screens is awesome.

I'm pretty sure what the OP is referring to can't be solved by a simple launcher since touchwiz goes deep. Nonetheless he should've known what he was getting into and should've stuck with a nexus device

IMO it's really pathetic to complain about TW especially since it's practically Vanilla with some really good enhancements, now if it were as bad as say Sense, then I would maybe agree, now that is one hideous "skin"

I have a galaxy note with sgs3 app ports and I couldn't be more satisfied. I've had Motorola and HTC android phones and this experience is by far the best as far as overlay of OS is for me. Whatever floats your boat tho.

I've really been trying to figure out what's so great about vanilla ICS. Is it just the visual theme? In which case that's just a matter of preference, or is it some feature that you prefer? It seems like Touchwiz has almost all of the same features, and you can install the default apps from vanilla ICS if you prefer them.

I agree with you. My favorite UI is Sense 4.0. I would've gotten the One X, if Verizon had it.

I am also wondering the same thing about Stock ICS. But I think that maybe its because its less intrusive than other UI's, and functions smoothly, just like google intended it to perform. Again I think its preference, some people like Stock and others prefer something other than stock. Personally I like all UI's but if I had to pick it would be the Sense 4.0.

Did you not know the sgs3 had touchwiz and htc has sense? Did you try a different launcher? Was this thread really needed? Stop whining and trade it for a nexus. Then read before investing in a phone.

I think "one man's trash is another man's treasure" may be more applicable.

Sense 4 is light but touchwiz is even lighter at least the silly colored boxes around applications are gone. B
