That is really, really cool.
Could come in handy on my trips to Montreal, although there's plenty of English up there, I will no longer need the English menu at a restaurant!
Hope they create one for Android and also support more languages ( I think just Spanish/English right now )
Aw man... yea thats pretty hot.
Get an Iphone, if you dont want one then wait a little, and like most Iphone apps they will find their way to the fastest growing OS out there right now.
Yea I just hope its not at the slow pace we usually have to wait. There are still some apps that they have on IOS that we dont have yet so I just bought and jailbroke an itouch 4 gen and use my evo as a hotspot. Kinda like with the netflix thing... bad thing about IOS is its just one OS a year... good thing is it makes it a lot easier for devs to code for it without having to make sure its compatible for a lot of different versions.
Hope it get's ported to android
The reason its one OS a year its cause its one phone a year, and that what apples head honcho tries to bad talk Android because of fragmentation, basically meaning so many diff versions of OS's on so many devices that not all android apps are compatible, so he thinks his one device for everybody model is better than Android's choose the right device for you model, Go figure.
Well im pro choice, but in terms of developers from what I see they tend to agree. It's easier for them to make an app that just works for IOS 4 as compared to making an app thats compatible with Android 1.6, 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3. Not to mention they have to take account for things like processor speed, etc. That's one of the main reasons they will pretty much always get the major apps before we do.
I prefer Android as an OS over IOS.. and ive had an iphone before but app wise thats one thing I was kinda spoiled about when I made the switch.
I agree with you, but with now more Android phones out there than OS Im sure devs will work a little harder to get into the bigger market, cause they aint ganna leave all that money out there for someone else to take thats for sure.
Google Goggles does this minus the augmented reality.
Been playing with it and it's pretty cool. Translations are kind of goofy but still okay. Overall a cool app to show off but Goggles is better for actual use.
The app is free but each language pack is going to start at five bucks apiece, then ten bucks after the first of the year.
-Not worth the money-
Google translate does a fine job of translating words, has loads of languages, and it's free. So you don't get the geek factor of taking a pic to get a translation, but typing the characters will always beat OCR accuracy-wise, don't you guys think?
Forget cell phones, I want to see this built into a pair of glasses.

iOS outnumbers Android by something like 5:1. Even if you do only phones it's like 3:1, Android has marginally surpassed the iPhone in sales per month but the iPhone (not mention iTouch/iPad) has a massive install base.
Wonder how it works with weird fonts

Good thing it doesn't use data, don't want to go over that cap trying to translate something Mr. IPhone user.

this assumes there are no people out there with older iPhones. except there are. and sometimes apps for the new version won't work for them.
I tried the goggles thing and its nowhere near as useful as this. Not even close.
Hate to say it, I'll always be Android! But Iphone apps own Androids right now, and it isn't even close.
now i know this will generate all sorts of hubbub, but the iOS 5 notification center looks really awesome. it IS a pretty blatant rip-off of their main competitor (and frankly something THEY would have taken google to court for), but they have some really sweet differences.
i'm hoping something similar shows up in android soon since i will NEVER be switching to ANY iOS device EVER. it just looks like it will be pretty cool. am the only one who thinks this?

dude, like 95% of your posts are negative, troll-esque comments. how about just share your thoughts on the topic? why be 'that guy'? seriously...
I'm pretty sure that once its released, the uneducated hive mind that is apple fans will declare that android stole their notification style.
Steve Jobs will again proclaim it to be innovative and new, and whatever new iphone it will be released in will sell millions.
In all seriousness, I actually like their "new" notification tray- it just looks better than Android IMO.
I do think it looks pretty nice, but thats to be expected from apple. But that was souch a low hit...are they running out of ideas? Hm...

Ha! i literally thought the same thing.
i also think that having widgets in the drop down is pretty cool too.
I thought it looked pretty awesome.
But I will quote myself from past, present and future and say that I will NEVER buy an Apple device.
Dunno, it's just some hate I've had towards it since the first iPod (so, pretty much when I first realized that company existed)
Never owned an apple product (Don't listen to music and being a gamer wouldn't stand Mac OSX) and never will, apparently.
Linux + Android will keep me company forever.

I had a thread on this very topic... also wrote on my blog that the thing that pissed me off the most about them ripping it off, is that they brought their polish to it, and Google has let it sit stagnant for 3 years... Google really should try to improve the UI more.
This may also help people from moving to phones with custom UI (ala slower updates).

Am I the only one who doesn't actually think the iOS 5 notification is worse than Android?
Just look at it this way. If you have CM7 (or Samsung ROMs for that matter) you literally have thousands of options for style and theme of that menu. Yes the stock ones don't look as good as the Apple one but that's why you are on XDA and have hundreds of themes. Some of those themes really go circles around the Apple theme they used. Last I checked, iOS5 also didn't offer you the option of theming that notification center. . . you are stuck with it forever.
As for widgets in the notification bar...quite honestly I can't think that would be a good idea. You put a few widgets and the whole menu is taken....then you have to scroll up and down to see things....which effectively defeats the point of a notification dropdown menu. Yes it's useful if you are in an app...but that's the only place I see it being useful and as far as I remember Android is GREAT at mutitasking. iOS is not and neither does it have widgets...hence why it makes sense for iOS5 to have this feature.
I haven't used straight stock Android in quite a while, so I don't know how much/little the UI changed. My understanding was Google would attempt to improve the mechanics of the OS and if you want something nice you modify it. However I also think it would be silly of Google to put too much time into modifying the UI since they let the manufacturers ruin it any way (depending on your take).

yeah i agree with most of what you said. i was referring more to the functionality of it rather than the look of it. I just love the slide to open feature for facebook, sms, voicemail, etc. maybe i don't have the best facebook or twitter apps, but i rarely get notifications for them (which is more likely a failing of facebook and twitter for having poor push notification implementation and not a shortcoming of android). and also, i like the tiny drop down that will give you a preview of a text or twitter mention (that is similar to the ticker). while in apps that hide the notification bar (i.e. most games and camera apps) i'd just like a heads up that i got a text without having GoSMS halt everything with a popup.

I am switching back to iPhone when the iPhone 5 comes out. I really like Android but I am sick of Samsung and not really impressed with HTC or Motorolla.
You tell me...

smart.
The brand itself made the iphone successful..
I recommend iphone too to those whoever looking to get a smartphone, especially the ones I think are not really OS/smartphone enthusiasts..
Both android and iphone are great OS'.. It's just much simpler and refined iOS is compared to android.. I think the Galaxy s2 made it right out of all the android smartphones out there..
Thanks to its great specs and incorporation into the OS..
And also... We keep on waiting for the next iteration of android to work right.. We said that about gingerbread then honeycomb.. Lol.. Is honeycomb not that good either?
ios and android are just 2 sides of the same coin.
Android gives the user a more advanced and easily customizable interface as well as open source, minus side is stability and hardware/software compatibilty.
IOS gives you the security of a rock solid stable OS with the comfort of knowing your OS is built around your hardware, thus no incompatibility or unsupported features. downside is closed OS no source info apple controlled market and complete lack of customization.
Android = Mobile Technology Enthusiast
IOS = Business savy person, or parent, people who need to be 100% certain everything works 24/7 (or trend hopping teen)
i have an ipod touch, a galaxy S, I love both
I have an Imac and a self built windows 7 gaming rig, I love both
Mind you these are my opinions and as such yours may differ.
as a person who loves the best of both worlds i use Miui with the Vexillium Project icon set, this gives an iphonish polish and feel with the customization of android that i have grown to love.
Android is more for the tech savvy people, while apple is for people that don't really know much, with the iphone though, you don't get leaks, either your phone is supported, or its old and will forsure never get updates (apple).

One area where apple has a big advantage is how easy it is to change themes or customize iphones. My buddy at work has an iphone 4 and it jail broke. Thru cydia he installed something call a dream board (or something like that). Thru that he can go from theme to them within a few seconds and there are zero issues. Also its super easy to change signal, wifi icons etc... Now us android usuers know what a pain it is to change almost anything on your phone. Finding something compatible with your rom, make a back up, flash, reboot, cross fingers , say a prayer and hope everything works like it should.

You can post it here. I enjoyed the article. It's different if your purpose was to sell something, but even if you had ads, it's not against the rules.
As for the topic:
My wife's sister is an apple iPhone convert to Android with the Galaxy S Vibrant. Observing her everyday dealing with the phone would come to the conclusion that the iPhone is just simpler. She had her iPhone before I met her, so I didn't get to see her initial learning curve into the smartphone arena. She often complained about the Galaxy's constant crashing, slowness, and terrible battery life. (She's the type of person who only charges once every three days). A custom ROM did not make things better, and shouldn't have to as she put it. She loves the Market and all of the nifty apps that she can download. She uses that often. She didn't have many apps on her iPhone.
It makes you think. I've found that a lot of features that I used apps for previously are built right in to the MIUI ROM and negates the use of an external app. I believe that a lot of features should be implemented into the OS, and should not require an external app, or custom ROM to access it. This is something that needs improvement. To me, an intuitive UI isn't only about being pretty, but being complete in the sense that I don't have to customize it in order for it to be fully functional.
iOS has superior apps, a superior user interface, a more battery-friendly design and superior media ecosystem (iTunes Store, etc.).
Even where the same apps exist, the iOS version is most often better.
Also, the build quality of the iPhone is superior to practically every Android device on the market. The only other smartphone I've owned that came close was the HD2 (boy has HTC gone down the ****ter since then?).
I simply can't deal with it because a 3.5" screen isn't enough for me. I need 4" at least on the screen. Anything less is not usable to me as a daily driver.

That's because it is pretty, gleaming, slick, and simple to use.
It's not marketing. Go to an AT&T or Verizon store and look at it.
It's so good, that even Samsung tried their damnest to copy the Look and Feel of it, and Android even borrowed many UI elements from iOS.
Lots of people got Vibrants preciecely because it was a 3GS look-alike with Android on it (skinned to look like iOS) and they didn't want to get AT&T's service to get an iPhone.

That's true to an extent. But not every android phone can run GB. So that's not an option for everyone. Plus apple os is pretty slick right out of the box. No need for custom roms.

In terms of build quality yes and in terms of efficiency their iOS is efficient but there phone is a nightmare for people with big hands which is why I generally see more women own iPhones and more guys own android phones

Actually no they aren't. They are so much alike that fighting over them is stupid and pointless.
Both companies can be accused of copying one another when it comes to features.
Its all a matter of personal preference, I prefer Android while others prefer ios, or blackberry or symbian etc. The only reason I dislike apple is not because of their products, but rather their terrible business ethics, otherwise i will admit that the iphone while not my flavour is a good device.

Not when it comes to business practices. Apple has hardware and software that is constantly CAPABLE of doing more, and a simple jailbreak makes it fully capable of almost everything android does. They would rather just sell you features slowly over time.
Whatever iphone 5 can do, iphone 3g probably could have done perfectly well, only now they dont have to truly TRY to make something awesome for people to buy it like android based phones do.
So yea, the devices ARE different.. try to bluetooth a file to someone on an iphone, or really even save a file, or so many other simple things. It COULD be very similar devices except apple is all about slowly selling you functionality and calling it innovation.
The OP has a point, Froyo, as much as we ***** about it, is capable of TONS more than the newest iphone. The only thing apple REALLY has is a following which attracts developers and great hardware that isn't fully utilized.
I just hate iphone fans and apple thats all the products are not.bad at all i still prefer android over ios but if they give me a free iphone i wouldnt complaint, i do agree with the op. Now whos exited about samsung galaxy notes??? I am!!!!!

I love the look of honeycomb, but it still has issues like choppines, not smooth, the stock browser is not good, lack of optimized apps... It doesn't even have an optimized Facebook app but there are third party Facebook apps anyway.. You can't even write a review on the market place and Google seems to be not planning on updating it til the next android version.. Pffffft
I have the gslate and i love it, but it doesn't run like how i want it to be being a dual core... Wish we have an OC kernel for it..
On android, it must have good hardware for it to run sleek.. My brother and his wife both have the touchpad, the browser on that one is fantastic! Why Can't android be like that? Oh yah it must be the widgets hence the choppines.. But it's fine i still prefer android no matter what..
Oh i just thought that if the touchpad was a hit, i bet apple would sue hp because it looks more similar to the ipad than the Galaxy tab does... Samsung is doing well in the mobile industry, making great mobile products, overall innovating... ,apple can't stand it
I think I'm going to switch from Android to iOS with the upcoming iPhone 5.
I just want a phone that works, and works all the time. Aside from antenna-gate, iPhone seems to be a solid and stable device.
I'm tired of messing with my phone. No Android device I have owned has been problem free, but it seems like many iPhones just work and work flawlessly.
Anyways, still undecided until the iPhone is actually released next month.
Yup, iphone is very stable.
Good thing I don't get tired of android though I do get tired of flashing roms that's why I'm using he most stable rom for me.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
You guys think that's cool. MIUI blows them all out of the water due to one fact: THEME CHANGER>>>>its sooooo cool! Like having a new rom in 2 seconds. I have been using a cheezit theme forever but I have a hundred different ones downloaded like transformers etc. Its the coolest **** ever. I could care less about anything else. It changes EVERYTHING VISUAL on your phone.
The thing that makes android win over iPhone, the one fact I've never heard a good argument for.. android will let you customize everything. Literally. Ios, though it works consistently, doesn't let you have control of most things. Its based on their business model, and some users don't want to have to be responsible for their devices.. but android wins simply because if the hardware can do something, and as a user, or as a community, you want it bad enough.. you can make it do it.
I wouldn't be as against apple as I am if they didn't fight jailbreaking like they do. Development is hindered by constantly having to find new exploits. Their devices CAN be amazing, but then they'd have to work harder to amaze you if they allowed the hardware to do everything it can do right now.

Reason I've title it "Froyo vs iOS5" because most of the new features in iOS5 are in Froyo already. Gingerbread has more features that iOS5 can't be comparable.
iOS is very stable just can't customize it to my liking, that's why I like/use Android.
I know, I know. No questions in General. But the question is meant to start a discussion/hopefully start a collective of people willing to solve a GENERAL problem (see what I did there? )
Anyway, bad puns aside, on to the point: why are we not? No company likes negative press or even the thought of negative press. We don't like not having AOSP/Vanilla Android ROMs on this beast of a device (not to mention **** battery life, kind of sad theme options in a restricted environment). They need to do is release proper documentation for the Exynos 7 SoC. We're here BECAUSE open-source.
So it brings me back to the question: Why have we not even TRIED to twist Samsung's arm in this respect? The research I've done shows the last time anyone even attempted this was waaaay back in 2012. Seemed like SOME headway was made, but seems like it all just fell off the face of the Earth. This issue transcends the G920/5x models, as Samsung has made it pretty obvious that Exynos will be the SoC of choice going forward. Meaning this sets a precedent where the future of the most popular line of Android devices does not support developing anything but TouchWiz, which stunts the open-source nature of the OS it is built upon, and really invalidates the POINT of buying an Android phone instead of an iPhone. You want to give us TouchWiz, great! They've made amazing improvements to this UI and I'm sure they'll continue polishing it. Again, it's an Android. That's an offering most people will love. We shouldn't be forced to use it.
So. To wrap this up, I will be reaching out to Samsung personally and attempting to source this documentation. I have NO idea what I am doing. It would help immensely if the community would jump into this and help out. The more of us reach out, the louder our voice will be. If they refuse to cooperate, we attack on Twitter, Facebook, etc.
tl;dr - I want AOSP on my Samsung phone. This one and future ones. I know you do too. Let's do something about it.
If we get AOSP we'll loose great camera preformance and some unique Samsung apps (for example I love s planner, it's the cleanest calendar I've ever used), without great camera and some unique features actually nexus devices look better in terms of price, SD support.
That's my opinion why people stick with touchwiz and want to improve it rather than going straight for AOSP.

They finally need to resolve the ram management on this device.. otherwise touchwiz is fine after debloating it a bit....
And the OS must be optimised.. I don't feel the awesome specs of this device are being making use of..
I used aosp on my S4 but kept on going back to touchwiz because of the Camera and other few things.

Why not go buy something else instead of starting a negative rant thread? That's the best way to get Samsung's attention. They aren't forcing you to buy their stuff.
It's a matter of preference. Some people, myself included, like touchwiz. Keep in mind, no one is forcing you to buy samsung or any brand for that matter. Respectfully, if you want aosp, you have the choice of buying nexus or gpe's.
I don't really get why people are complaining about the ram issue. The way I multitask is I turn the app into a bubble then open my primary app. It works flawlessly on my side.
On my previous phones, I have tried every sort of AOSP ROM ranging from CM to PA to whatever experimental stuff that came out that day. There was a time where I was running a different ROM every day.
My phones were always unstable, things were not working, crashing all the time. Most of the original features that came with the phone were not working. I finally got tired of it. Since I got this S6, I haven't even rooted it. I'm just running stock and I'm loving it. Everything just works.
Sure the RAM thing is a minor annoyance but nothing major. Apps launch almost instantly anyway. I wouldn't go back to AOSP even if it was possible. I love a using a phone that works 100%.

how do you do that?
Umm, you swipe from the top most of the app(left or right) down and it will shrink down the app. From there, you can then choose the minimize button so that it turns into a bubble. This will only work for portrait only app.
Wellwhack me with a rusty crowbar didn't know you could do that cheers jhayzt ?

:highfive: Multitasking problem solved.
Yes indeed happy days
Im not a developer myself but I suppose they are going to release some information about exynos 7420 http://howchip.com/ExSOM-7420-eMM.php
Didn't expect to get any replies LOL.
Everyone telling me to get a different phone or to just not buy Samsung to "teach em a lesson," yeah. Samsung doesnt care about $1000 lol.
To me it's about the principle of android vs what Samsung has turned it all into. But I mean to each their own, I just bought the phone for the amazing screen and the way it looks. I planned to install CM from the getgo. I suppose it's on me for not doing my research in regards to ROMs for the phone in the first place.
That howchip link...seriously? They're actually going to do this? HUZZAH!
Huh do you think AOSP roms gonna improve your phone battery life...

I've always had poor battery performance on AOSP ROMs in comparison to TW based ROMs.
