[Q] Disable R800x OTA? - Xperia Play General

This is my first post here and I'm not entirely sure if I'm posting in the right place....but here goes nothing (Please don't flame me. I'm learning, too!)
I've searched high and low on how to go about this and I can't find a thing about it. So, why not ask the question, right?
Well, since a certain kind XDA member (wink wink) was so wonderful as to root our R800x's, I was wondering if there is a way to disable the OTA that keeps randomly popping up so that we don't squander all his hard work. It would be terrible to grab our phones in the morning and find that we've been forcibly pushed into 2.3.3 with no say in the matter.
Does anyone have any ideas what to do?
Thank you all in advance!!

The rate Verizon goes with their updates you won't have to worry about this till at least next year LOL.

Good point Let's hope they don't decide to get all froggy and pop a release on us. I would cry....a lot, lol.

once you have root you may be able to firewall the ota process or nix it by removing verizon bloatware.
Sent from my R800x using XDA App

I apologize in advance for resurrecting this thread as I have been away for a while and haven't been able to get to XDA for a while. I was unfortunate enough to have my phone do the 2.3.3 update all by itself (if you can believe it) and then it bricked my phone. I used fastboot to bring my phone back to life and I'm wondering....would anyone be kind enough to tell me which firewall program I should get to make this thing stop issuing the OTA with detailed instructions? I'm a little naive when it comes to that. However I am a quick learner.

my phone was bricked by the update as well but luckily for me the updater force closes on me now(I guess a good thing) but it's something along the lines of com.android.updater or something like that. You could probably go through and delete it through root explorer. Don't know what will happen if it's deleted i assume nothing except it won't ask you to update anymore but I haven't had tome to try it

OK so I feel like a complete dumb-dumb now, haha. It seems that all you have to do is go into Titanium Backup, find the Mobile Care and fotainstaller programs, then freeze them. All fixed and no OTA! YAY! lol
I haven't seen any adverse reactions so far, but will post if I do.

Lucky me, I backed up and uninstalled Mobile Care the moment I rooted. However I haven't done anything with fotarebootreceiver 1.0 and I can't remember the last time I was prompted for an update.

I don't know If any has seen this but I have been constantly getting aforce close for the download agent.apk anyone seen this or know how to fix it?

Never got a notification there was an update.. Only found out by lurking around xda, then had to go to software updates to see if I had anything. So, no I have ideas for you.

you can try this
"To turn OFF future OTA updates, there is a file in the /system/etc/security folder. The file is named "otacerts.zip". Rename it "otacerts.zip.bak", or whatever you want. That will prevent future updates." -dont forget to mount r/w

That doesn't stop the phone from repeatedly downloading the update file and killing your battery.
We need to know the information from the build.prop file for the new update so that the phone will look like it is running with the update already.

doesnt work
renaming the file does nothing. I renamed it reset the phone and I still get the update alert about every hour

fixed it
If you have root explorer or es go to system, apps. then find innopath active care and rename it with .bak. it worked for me.

Auto-rotate on a non-rooted G1?

I got this idea from The Dude's Rogers ROM that says it does not require a special SPL.
I have the stock T-mobile 1.5 update as a zip right now. Can it be modified in the same way as JF's cupcake can be modded to enable home-screen auto rotate, ala sir-mez's instructions, signed then flashed onto a non-rooted stock SPL G1? And if it can be done, will it still be able to recieve OTA's from T-mobile?
My friend wants auto-rotate on home but doesn't want to root. He is lazy and not very tech-savvy when it comes to things beyond the instruction manual.
I would post this in the auto-rotate thread but it is closed.
it takes like 30 mins to root the phone, just do it for him.
Thanks for the help. So when a new update comes out and he deleted the JF updater what then. Or when a problerm comes up with his phone, what does he do? He needs to use the warranty and needs to un-root before he sends it back, what then? Oh I forgot to mention, I won't always be there to be his tech support. Kind of a problem now isn't. Military makes you move every once in a while. I am completely aware how easy and quick it is to root, but like I said before, MY FRIEND IS LAZY AND DOESN'T WANT TO LEARN.
So I ask again, can it done?

Then I wouldn't do anything. If he's too lazy to learn then he must not really want root. If you do things for him like this, all you're doing is making yourself his go to guy for any problems with his phone.
I don't talk about or offer rooting to any of my friends. If any of them ask me to do it, the first thing I ask them is "Why do you want it?".
Because 95% of end users don't need it.

if your friend is too lazy to try to figure things out for himself, then he doesn't really deserve to 'customize' his phone. and if you do things for him and he has no clue on what you did or why you did it then you will be the one suffering the most. choose your battles.... hehe
I guess that's true. I made the ROM and I'm gonna try it anyway. I'll let you all know how it goes if any of you are curious. Looks like you aren't, but if you have friends that don't want root but want auto-rotate...
Well if he don't want root then tell him to get one of the home alternatives like open home.

UVJI6 - Missing apps from market?

After installing UVJI6 (I received it OTA), I am unable to see some apps from the market, in particular, ones that I use frequently. Is there a way to fix this or has someone found some sort of documentation from Samsung/TMobile on this?
Thanks!
This has been addressed, please learn to use search kthx
Yes, I've seen others report this though I don't recall seeing a fix. I'm still a little annoyed at how long the swipe needs to be now to unlock the screen.

I did search and didn't see it. Would you mind sharing the link if you've seen it?
The answer is easy: Google/Samsung haven't authorized the latest updates Market yet. When they authorize it the missing applications will show up. You will have the same missing apps if you go through Kies, OTA, or Odin. You can put a hack in place to get around it but I would not recommend it. The hack causes your market to identify itself as JFD instead of JI6. In theory that could cause missing new apps in the future.
Have you tried the Android 2.2 style Market app on Vibrant?
@spiz516, I also had the same problem after using ODIN to perform my update (following a failed OTA push). I like kmfisher's answer. But if you absolutely can't wait, and you are rooted, here's how you can do it:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804763
See post #24.
After I performed this fix, I was able to see a few missing applications. However, I also noticed that this also brought back a horrible Market application lag. So, I will probably send it back since I've downloaded the two applications I needed that were market locked.
Good Luck!

Awesome, thank you for the response. Much appreciated!
Clear Cache too. I don't have any worse lag, this has nothing to do with anything that would break something like market speed besides old cache maybe.

[Q] OTA updates and PRL/Profile, FB integration w/ root

Hey there all. I usually post around in SDX most of the time, but I figured I would start coming over here to ask you all questions. I find that the commmunity over there is starting to get increasingly weak. So today, I'll keep it fairly simple with three questions that I keep getting mixed responses on and would once and for all like those who are more educated than myself be able to resolve this for the sake of mankind (or something like that)
Number 1: Will the Epic get OTA updates if the phone is ONLY rooted? As in, no special ROMS, Kernal, etc. JUST rooted. I hear yes, I hear no, I hear "mine did" I hear "That will brick your phone." I've searched all the forums and can't find a definitive answer. I ask, because it is in regards to my next question, which can be solved if I am able to OTA update to Froyo when it reaches me, and NOT lose root. If I will, do I have to un-root, then update, then re-root, or is there a better solution?
The other question is the problems that a lot of people have been having with PRL and Profile updates. I get the typical "You're ___ cannot be updated at this time. If this persists contact your network for help" or whatever it says. Now, I haven't removed any of the necessary APKs, but I also don't have them (Sprint updater, and something else, it escapes me right now....) that I have read about that are needed to get the updates. I've tried it with WiFi, 4G, everything short of a wipe on my phone. Any information? Does anyone have these APK's backed up? I find that my phone just doesn't have them and I find no records of deleting them.
Then the only other, extremely minor thing is that I find that the Facebook SNS just plain doesn't work. From day one, pre-root, I was never able to have an integrated Facebook account, regardless of what I tried. I read a few things about how to fix it, but alas, have gotten nowhere. The only thing I did that I know is probably going to be an issue is I deleted the SNS for Facebook, but then reinstalled it. Basically, it would just be really nice if anyone can point me in the direction of being able to integrate facebook into my contacts, pictures, feeds, etc.
If any of this seems redundant, I apologize. I've literally scoured the interwebs for answers to these questions, but I always opposite answers. I don't see how this is viable considering we all have the same phone and if the information is correct, it shouldn't be this complicated.
I don't know who I have to (sexual expletive) to be able to resolve any of this, but the least I can say is that you XDA kids sure know what you're doing over the folks at SDX. Pure chaos. Thanks again for anyone and everyone who helps, and if it goes well, I'll throw up a donation. Thanks guys/gals.
And while th
You can be rooted, but you will lose root if you update through OTA,,,as for the prl updates,I can update with no problem on super heroes superman 2.2.1 at the moment until I make my own ROM,,,,on a side note, whats up fellow SDX member.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I can only answer the first question and the answer is a resounding yes. Sort of.
If you removed stock apps then OTA updates will screw your phone up. Hard. If you just rooted for say, wireless tether or better CPU management then you will be 100% fine. Just know that when you get updated you will lose root and need to wait for someone to release a new oneclickroot to do it again the easy and safe way.

cant avoid 6.2.1? I cant get 6.2.1!

Before the holidays, I edited my hosts file and renamed the OTASilentInstall.apk file to OTASilentInstall.bak, because at the time we thought that would certainly disable the KF's ability to auto-update. Since I read that people who employed these methods were still getting the update, I left my wireless turned off through most of the holidays. When I finally read that root had been developed via Burrito, and I liked the changes that 6.2.1 has brought, I decided to flip on my wireless and get the update. That was five days ago. I keep checking my device and no update!!
LOL!
Isn't it funny how we can't avoid the update if we don't want it and we can't get it if we do want it!!
I dunno, maybe I'm just not using it enough, but it would be nice if Amazon wasn't so secretive about these updates; like maybe there could be some kind of way to initiate the update or at least see if it is trying to download it with some kind of progress indicator, because over the last 5 days I have no idea if it is trying to update itself.

[Q] I want Verizon Backup Assistant Plus GONE!

Hey guys, I just got a new Note 3 and am having and issue.
I get bloat ware will be an issue unless I root but forcing me to use this Verizon Backup Assistant is too much! Is there anyway to get rid of it? I don't even see it listed as an app yet it's always listed under "Accounts" leading me to believe it's not just there but running and synchronizing as well.
I did a search last night and found many posts of people annoyed with this and some solutions but none seem to work anymore, maybe because those solutions were old? I want as far as to go into My Verizon website and delete all my contacts then reset/wipe my phone and during the Wizard unchecked to backup contacts; yet even all that didn't work. "Backup Assistant Plus" still there under services .... Please help.

It is one of the few apps that you cannot 'turn off' through the application manager in settings. Surely there must be a way to disable it without root.

You won't be able to remove it without root. It's one of the many advantages of having a rooted device, you can remove any of the bloat that you want.

Thank you very much for your speedy response. Is there still no way to root if your N3 is on 4.4.2?

There currently is no root method for 4.4.2 unless a pre-rooted version. If you've taken the OTA you're stuck for now as there is no way to go back to previous builds to gain root access. I never download and install an OTA, there is too much of a risk where you may never have a rooted device again.
I am glad I have thus far held off on the OTA, although I am lucky it's not bugging me like it sounds like it bugs some people, it hasn't even tried to download it yet. Rooting is becoming more and more temping.

Mine downloaded it the first time it appeared, then started asking me twice a day about 3 weeks ago. I held off for 2 weeks and about a week ago it popped up and asked me at 5:53am. In my half-asleep state, I somehow managed to tell it to go ahead and do it. Damnit.
