cant avoid 6.2.1? I cant get 6.2.1! - Kindle Fire General

Before the holidays, I edited my hosts file and renamed the OTASilentInstall.apk file to OTASilentInstall.bak, because at the time we thought that would certainly disable the KF's ability to auto-update. Since I read that people who employed these methods were still getting the update, I left my wireless turned off through most of the holidays. When I finally read that root had been developed via Burrito, and I liked the changes that 6.2.1 has brought, I decided to flip on my wireless and get the update. That was five days ago. I keep checking my device and no update!!
LOL!
Isn't it funny how we can't avoid the update if we don't want it and we can't get it if we do want it!!
I dunno, maybe I'm just not using it enough, but it would be nice if Amazon wasn't so secretive about these updates; like maybe there could be some kind of way to initiate the update or at least see if it is trying to download it with some kind of progress indicator, because over the last 5 days I have no idea if it is trying to update itself.

The Red (Manual) Update app now showing in Market

Hey guys, Ever since going to FRF83 ad now FRF85b FroYo I've been getting this weird Manual Update listed in the market. Does this mean that certain app cannot be market as Auto Update.
I don't have Any apps checked to Auto Update, so why would I be getting something like Manual update, has anyone seen this?
It's not just the Flick It Game (Great Game, Get it) it's happened about 5 times in the last week or so while updating. I'm not sure what is causing it. I just want em all to say update like before.
Also, when this happens. There's no longer the Update All button at bottom, and I have to do them both one at a time.

I'm guessing here but I think when something is flagged as Manual Update it means the permissions of the app has changed and must be approved again. This would prevent a dev from making an app update do something you don't agree to..
But like I said thats just a guess.
Well, I don't think anything changed. but it's possible.
Yeah, I saw one of those, it won't include that one in update all because the permissions changed.
are you sure thats what it is, a permission changed. if so thats fine.
I'm just trying to figure it all out, thats all

Nope which is why I said it was a guess. It seems to make the most sense to me. If a app only checks the weather but the developer releases an update that wipes you SD card I'm pretty sure you are going to have to approve the permissions.
So like I said I think it's a manual update because you have to acknowledge the changed permissions.
When the permissions change, you must manually update the app, even if you have automatic update checked off. Just a security feature. Going from stock 2.1 to Froyo, you will even get the manual update dialog for Google Maps.
From page 308 of the Android 2.2 Manual:
Market 308
AUG-2.2.0-100 Android User’s Guide
If the application is not set to update automatically, or if the update changes the
permissions it requires, you’re notified you have updates available. Touching the
notification opens the Downloads screen in Market. Each application you’ve
downloaded that has an update available has an Update or Update (manual)
label.
S Touch an application with an Update or Update (manual) label to update it,
after reviewing changes to its permissions if necessary.
S Touch Update all to update all the applications with updates that don’t have
permissions changes.
The Update all button is available only if you have more than one update that
doesn’t require you to approve changes to permissions.
To set whether you’re notified about updated applications
1 On the Android Market home screen, press Menu and touch Downloads.
2 Press Menu and touch Notifications.
3 Select whether or not to be notified of updates to the applications you’ve
downloaded.
4 Touch OK.
K Thanks guys!

[Q] Netflix on Acer Iconia Tab A500

Hello all, I am new here so I'm sorry if I am ignorent of anything
I have an Iconia tab, and have been patiently for the netflix app to be released. Well it finally seems like it has been done here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076150
My problem is when I download the apk and try to open it I get the error ''cannot open file''.
Any suggestions? Thanks
Download the apk with Firefox mobile or your desktop PC instead of the default browser. AFAIK, streaming still doesn't work for us, just queue management.
Its not working on the acer yet.
Edit: ninja'd
I think I read somewhere it's a Honeycomb issue, not just an Acer issue.
the device check disabled apk asks you to upgrade to the latest version on the market (which doesn't exist on our device), and the non-check disabled version will let you browse, but if you try to play a video it pops an error saying the device is not supported.
Hopefully we'll get something that works in the near future. Netflix claims to be working on other devices and it looked like tablets were on the list as well.
Thanks everyone for your answers. Any chance we can keep this thread going as an update to everyone wondering when netflix will be brought over so users do not have to scour the web in search of the answer?
Just a bit of a noob question, but what about changing your build.prop?
If I understand correctly, that requires root, and I do not want do downgrade to gingerbread.
Yup..

I have heard of doing this and am pretty sure root is required.
Such a shame Netflix has not gotten it together for us yet - this screen rocks as a movie player!

I have my acer rooted, but not well enough it seems. I still run honeycomb, and in fact still get firmware updates from acer. I rooted it so I can setup my two 1tb external hard drives to it lol. just used gingerbreak and a couple other things post root. However, i did try and edit the build.prop but wont allow me to save, just read only. I havent messed with it extensively, but seems like there should be a way.

If you use root explorer it will let you mount the file system read-write so you can edit the file.
Alright guys I am not sure if it has been tested but when I get home. I have the lib files that fixed the playback issue on sense 3.0 I will install the deactive device check version and push the lib Files It may actually work!! I just tested on another device that had playback issues worked flawlessly!! Ill let you guys know in like 2 hours or so when I get home.
Right on!
Crsdr37 - sounds promising! Let us know how it goes - since Netflix is totally dragging on getting their software working. My girlfriend's mother uses a HTC Evo 4 from Sprint - netflix support has been broken for weeks for them, and the OTA patch they tried to push out did not work. Total fustercluck

Would be most grateful! Take your time, I am out of classes today and girlfriend is working - got all day to geek out
i am very excited to find out on this
Alright guys so after dismantling netflix.apk the latest version the issue is within one of the files called nrdp.js Think of it as the gate keeper to our netflix enjoyment. It checks certain areas of the device here is the list we need to bypass to get the rsa key injected into our devices for access to the netflix servers.
1.Get Model
2.Get Software Version
3.Get Certification Version
4.Get ESN
5.Get ESN Prefix
Those are all the functions it calls for device checking. That I could find. There is also a certificate file ca.pem that controls how long the app works for before you have to get new certificate that is encrypted up the ass so big roadblock..... Sorry I tried and will continue to try but it does not look good... Damn those large companies with their big sticks.

I have an stock iconia with 3.1 and tonight I installed the apk mentioned in this article:

App runs but when I select a vid I get:
"Sorry, we could not reach the Netflix service. Please try again later. If the problems persists please visit the Netflix website (12001)."

[Q] Disable R800x OTA?

This is my first post here and I'm not entirely sure if I'm posting in the right place....but here goes nothing (Please don't flame me. I'm learning, too!)
I've searched high and low on how to go about this and I can't find a thing about it. So, why not ask the question, right?
Well, since a certain kind XDA member (wink wink) was so wonderful as to root our R800x's, I was wondering if there is a way to disable the OTA that keeps randomly popping up so that we don't squander all his hard work. It would be terrible to grab our phones in the morning and find that we've been forcibly pushed into 2.3.3 with no say in the matter.
Does anyone have any ideas what to do?
Thank you all in advance!!
The rate Verizon goes with their updates you won't have to worry about this till at least next year LOL.
Good point Let's hope they don't decide to get all froggy and pop a release on us. I would cry....a lot, lol.
once you have root you may be able to firewall the ota process or nix it by removing verizon bloatware.
Sent from my R800x using XDA App
I apologize in advance for resurrecting this thread as I have been away for a while and haven't been able to get to XDA for a while. I was unfortunate enough to have my phone do the 2.3.3 update all by itself (if you can believe it) and then it bricked my phone. I used fastboot to bring my phone back to life and I'm wondering....would anyone be kind enough to tell me which firewall program I should get to make this thing stop issuing the OTA with detailed instructions? I'm a little naive when it comes to that. However I am a quick learner.
my phone was bricked by the update as well but luckily for me the updater force closes on me now(I guess a good thing) but it's something along the lines of com.android.updater or something like that. You could probably go through and delete it through root explorer. Don't know what will happen if it's deleted i assume nothing except it won't ask you to update anymore but I haven't had tome to try it
OK so I feel like a complete dumb-dumb now, haha. It seems that all you have to do is go into Titanium Backup, find the Mobile Care and fotainstaller programs, then freeze them. All fixed and no OTA! YAY! lol
I haven't seen any adverse reactions so far, but will post if I do.
Lucky me, I backed up and uninstalled Mobile Care the moment I rooted. However I haven't done anything with fotarebootreceiver 1.0 and I can't remember the last time I was prompted for an update.
I don't know If any has seen this but I have been constantly getting aforce close for the download agent.apk anyone seen this or know how to fix it?

you can try this
"To turn OFF future OTA updates, there is a file in the /system/etc/security folder. The file is named "otacerts.zip". Rename it "otacerts.zip.bak", or whatever you want. That will prevent future updates." -dont forget to mount r/w

That doesn't stop the phone from repeatedly downloading the update file and killing your battery.
We need to know the information from the build.prop file for the new update so that the phone will look like it is running with the update already.
doesnt work
renaming the file does nothing. I renamed it reset the phone and I still get the update alert about every hour
fixed it
If you have root explorer or es go to system, apps. then find innopath active care and rename it with .bak. it worked for me.

[Q] I want Verizon Backup Assistant Plus GONE!

Hey guys, I just got a new Note 3 and am having and issue.
I get bloat ware will be an issue unless I root but forcing me to use this Verizon Backup Assistant is too much! Is there anyway to get rid of it? I don't even see it listed as an app yet it's always listed under "Accounts" leading me to believe it's not just there but running and synchronizing as well.
I did a search last night and found many posts of people annoyed with this and some solutions but none seem to work anymore, maybe because those solutions were old? I want as far as to go into My Verizon website and delete all my contacts then reset/wipe my phone and during the Wizard unchecked to backup contacts; yet even all that didn't work. "Backup Assistant Plus" still there under services .... Please help.

It is one of the few apps that you cannot 'turn off' through the application manager in settings. Surely there must be a way to disable it without root.

You won't be able to remove it without root. It's one of the many advantages of having a rooted device, you can remove any of the bloat that you want.

There currently is no root method for 4.4.2 unless a pre-rooted version. If you've taken the OTA you're stuck for now as there is no way to go back to previous builds to gain root access. I never download and install an OTA, there is too much of a risk where you may never have a rooted device again.
I am glad I have thus far held off on the OTA, although I am lucky it's not bugging me like it sounds like it bugs some people, it hasn't even tried to download it yet. Rooting is becoming more and more temping.

Mine downloaded it the first time it appeared, then started asking me twice a day about 3 weeks ago. I held off for 2 weeks and about a week ago it popped up and asked me at 5:53am. In my half-asleep state, I somehow managed to tell it to go ahead and do it. Damnit.

S8/S8+ Oreo Beta is live!!!

There's 10,000 slots available instead of the Sammobile reported 7500 slots available. Once you click a few agreements, you get in automatically but then nothing happens. You have to force the update by going into Settings\Software update. The update happens normally then. The settings menu has changed quite a bit, Oreo is MUCH snappier (especially reboots), and some icons have changed. The warning in the last screenshot comes up automatically about 20 seconds after each reboot. Good luck getting in!!! :highfive:

Sure, you could flash the modem if anyone could get the OTA but I'm pretty sure it'd be quite difficult. Since we're not rooted, you'd literally have to catch the OTA transmitting over your WiFi network onto your PC and then extract it. Which reminds me....
@bogdi1988 - Perhaps it's not showing up for you because you're not connected to a WiFi network. Make sure you're logged in to your Samsung account in Galaxy Apps and that all your Samsung Apps are up to date (the only way they update is when on WiFi.) Then check the Samsung+ app to see if it shows up for you. Hope this helps.

I updated hours ago and have rebooted several times since updating. I don't think I'd have a chance of finding the file name at this point. It would've been best to start a logcat right before initializing the OTA.

My "upgrade" did not go well. Turns out that package disabler pro is not playing nice with this update. I kept getting Android system has stopped and couldn't even load the main home screen. I gave up finally and hard reset and resintalled all my apps. I also had a pretty bad problem with the battery draining faster than it was charging on a wall plug. Factory reset was a pain to reinstall everything (still ongoing as I need apps, I reinstall them) but the battery issue has disappeared. Can't tell if WiFi is any better. Opinions on this release would be most welcome.

You're complaining about a third party app that disables stock apps that is NOT updated to support Oreo yet not playing nice with a Beta build??? Absurd. I'm quite sure the upgrade went as smoothly for everyone else as it did me.
As for my feedback, I haven't noticed a single hiccup with the build. It doesn't feel like a Beta. It seems like it could've been a final/official build.

LOL, that wasn't a "complaint" that was an observation. As noted by the no complaint and an observation comment. As far as not noticing it's a beta, would that be between the 15 or so times per minute that the software pops up a warning that this is beta software and may not work as well as expected and may cause problems? That not obvious it's a beta message? Also, the bad battery drain was an issue. That shouldn't happen no matter what.
