Moving from the Nexus to the Photon - Nexus S General

I like my nexus...but I cant really deal any more with the "wackness" of the phone. Im going to pick up the photon. yea I know its not unlocked, blah blah blah. It is rooted, so thats fine enough at the moment.

Thanks for letting us know..?

What do you mean by the "wackness" of this phone? not sure what you could even mean by that lol..

Even after the "radio" update. Signal issues, wifi issues, slow data issues, low volume, just over all the little quirks.
I got to play with the photon, the reception is 1000% better, data speeds better, wifi works 4g is awesome.

If i had radio issues i would have moved too, whats a phone if there are connection issues? Im just glad mine has an awesome radio.

Yes it's tempting to get a photon. I don't like motoblur and how dickish Motorola can be at times.

Cool, thanks for the blog post. Go over to the Photon forums.
Not sure what your objective of this thread is to do. Convince more people to get a Photon? Troll? Etc?
Have fun with the Photon though. In a couple of months, I'll be enjoying Ice Cream Sandwich while you're a milestone behind

I think that if you go look at some of the Photon forums you will see that things aren't all peachy over there.

read other areas...looks like 99% of people who owne other modles of phones, also complain and want something different...the ns4g is a fast ass phone, need i said PHONE, NOT laptop, pc, video card ect... and some of the problems you read about are caused by user error.. flashing, rooting, wiping.. ect.. and in many cases signal problems are due to location.. think about it.. bob who lives in atlanta downtown gets a steady 5 bars w/ 4G.. vs . tim who lives in UTAH country side gets 1 or 2 bars w/o 4g... make sence?

I have to admin I have had the Nexus for 3 weeks and even after the root and update and trying every rom/kernel combo I still get 2 bars and poor wifiand Im thinking about switching as well. This is a big disappointment because I cant stand Sense and the only other real option is Photon. But if that phone isn't rootable yet IDK.

I've only had my Nexus for a few days, but the signal quality I've been getting with it has been on par with every other phone I've had on Sprint. I think that part of the problem is that the EVO...lies...for lack of a better term, about its signal strength.
I used to flash AOSP ROMs onto my EVOs primarily (both a 4G and Shift), and while on stock Sense showed two or three bars where on an AOSP I got one or none, the real signal strength (dBm/asu) was the same. At work I used to get between -98 to -106 dBm on my EVO, whereas with my Nexus I get a steady -96 (still not great, but better). I see one bar on my indicator, but my EVO would be showing three bars right now.
I could be wrong and other people could be seeing exactly what they're reporting, but so far I have no complaints about the signal strength on my Nexus.

Engadget Review Atrix

Nice review.

One of the biggest deals they found in that review is the speed.
The Atrix is not running any where near 4g more like crappy 3g at best.
What is the use of the phone with all that power if its network connection is crap?

AT&T hasn't finished the enhanced backhaul to most of the network and it won't be ready to go till the end of March at the earliest. Seems like something Engadget should have mentioned.
It's a pretty solid review, I think, but now I'm wondering about bloatware. CNET's review said this:
Of course, you've also got your obligatory AT&T services--AT&T Navigator, AT&T FamilyMap, and AT&T U-Verse Live TV--on there, but for once, you can actually uninstall any of these apps if you wish.

but Engadget disagrees:
We're a little disappointed by the fact that Motorola and AT&T are loading up the Atrix with a considerable amount of bloatware, and there's nothing you can really do about it. Vlingo, a handful of AT&T apps, Blockbuster, and a smattering of other programs all ship on the handset with no option to delete them.

Which is it? Rooting will take care of bloat, but it would be nice if we could get rid of it before rooting is available.

Huh.
again, AT&T hasn't finished the backhaul necessary. Also, I always get lower speed tests with the Speedtest.net app than I do with XtremeLabs app. When I get my phone, I'll test the speeds, should be about 2200-3500 in Stl. if it's like the N1. That's WITHOUT the '4G'
They tested it against the iphone and the iphone beat it hands down.
"
The odd thing is that if you compare the device against the iPhone 4 on AT&T's network -- tested in exactly the same locations -- you see much different results. On the iPhone, data speeds were consistently in the 2 or 3 Mbps range for downloads, and hovering around 1 Mbps for uploads."
That is a bowl of suck right there.

I was curious about this, too. Perhaps Joshua Topolsky doesn't know about "Manage Apps >> uninstall" because he isn't a regular Android user? I doubt the CNET guy would have said that if it weren't possible.

On the droid x I have I could only uninstall updates, not delete it (without root). Motorola has a deal with Blockbuster, so they put it on all their phones.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if z4root worked right out of the box. It's already designed to work on Motorola phones running 2.2.1, so it probably will work for this too. Once that's done, TiBu will remove everything extra anyway.
On the battery side, the Atrix 4G packs an impressive 1930mAh battery inside, and even though Android is data intensive, we found ourselves squeezing more than 24 hours out of the device on a single charge with fairly heavy use. You can probably get more time out of the device if you avoid calls when possible and keep your brightness settings in check, but we were pleasantly surprised by the performance we saw.

lol, yeah, don't hold back or anything. This phone is sounding like a winner to me assuming it can be properly rooted and custom roms installed. I never had an interest in the docks anyways so the overall beatings they are taking in the reviews isn't a concern to me. Like engadget I love the concept but the laptop dock cannot replace a laptop as is making it a third wheel for me.
Well, all I wanted to see in that review was info on the bootloader, and... it's locked... Not really a surprise, but hey, I was holding onto hope. The fact that this phone won't be getting much dev support, and because it's all plastic, means I'll be crossing it off my list... My perfect Android device, has yet to surface.
doesn't the Droid X have custom roms? If so, couldn't there be custom ROMs on this phone as well?

I am willing to bet that custom roms will start rolling out after about a month. I don't understand what the big deal is with bootloader, with it unlocked, we might see roms a few weeks sooner, but either way it will get done. I know it will get rooted within a week, that is a fact. Once it's rooted, feel free to ASOPify the phone however you like...

New to Incredible

I am leaving att simply because of their shotty data plan. I am also looking at the Incredible because of the unlocked unencrypted bootloader as the droid x has as well as the htc quality that ive seen in the past. I listen to alot of internet radio and 2gbs just isnt enough sorry att and im even more sorry that after 6 years youll be losing 3 lines. At 150.00 a month.
Without starting a pissing match, what rom is good on battery and speed? Generally looking for some user experience reviews.

HeyItsLou's ROMs always gave me great battery life, with Chad's kernels. Right now I am running CM7 Nightly #7, and the battery life is alright for me, not bad enough to switch to something else. Other than that I really like CM7.
I've always had great battery life with the Inc/Evo hybrid ROMs too, I know Lou's got one...there's others out there too by Myn and Chingy.
Thanks! How is your data on verizon?
Sent from Xda Premium on a Captivate running Paragon 6
Like you, I switched from ATT. I had a Curve with them, and the BB was slow along with their network. I had friends on Verizon, and I loved Verizon's phones, so I jumped. Been happy ever since. I live in Madison, WI, and haven't had any issues with 3g drops, dropped calls, or anything like that. I use WiFi alot too, about 50% of the time. I haven't had any complaints about it since switching, it was a great move I think.
This is the kind of thing i need to hear. I am on long island and its not that data is that bad, but att just doesnt get it, 2gbs just isnt enough.
Sent from Xda Premium on a Captivate running Paragon 6
Just adding some input, i love verizon alot and literally have no complaints. I live in California, and i cant remember the last time i dropped a call, or thought 3g was too slow. I use ALOT of data and its a great feeling not having to care about any 3g limits.

Agreed. The last time I remember a call dropping wasn't even my phone/Verizon's fault, it was my brother on Sprint that dropped it. I use data way more than voice, and use my phone heavy for work emails and phone calls (phone calls - only if I am out of the office though).

Do you know anyone that uses Verizon in Long Island that you could ask about the service? Maybe stop someone you see with an Inc or another Verizon phone and ask, just to get an idea of how it operates where you are at. I wouldn't think there would be issues. Just a thought.
Edit +10

I should talk to my brother in law. He has a droidx and knows nothing about rooting and flashing and all that good stuff, but he seems to have zero issues. the best part about this whole thing was when i was talking to the retention dept and praising them trying to pull the unlimited data out of them the call dropped! Which sealed the deal. I had verizon years ago and dont know why i left to begin with. Their unlimited data blows away att's $25.00 2 gb plan.

My 0.02 cents. Versions network is vastly superior to att. In terms of coverage my dad had an iphone on att and we were driving in Minnesota using google nav to get somewhere. His phone hits a dead spot. We switch to my inc and get there. His phone was in the dead spot the entire time after that. I mean 0 bars, and he wants to switch his entire company next time the contacts run out

Verizon has more coverage for sure. But if you're in an area that actually has at&t coverage, I also think you won't be disappointed at Verizons 3G speeds.
I'm able to stream hulu (modded flash, normally does not stream to phones) to my phone perfectly, watch full episodes without anymore than a 5 second buffer. What makes that statement better is I'm able to do it in an area that has low bar 3G coverage.
And you're right about the unlocked bootloader the incredible has. My dad has the X and there isn't a whole lot of options you can do to increase performance and speed. Pretty much you're only able to swap out ROM's.
The incredible is different, I've been able to change kernels, the splash screen and boot animation, as well as the ROM.
The ROM's choices available are really pretty amazing. There's a bunch of really talented developers here, you can take a quick look at the list here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=969371
So I would definitely recommend you jump ship and go with the Incredible on Verizon
I am definitley jumping ship and bringing all three lines over to verizon. I am waiting until monday when i am off from work again so i can sit down and make sure everything is ported over correctly. I already am deciding what rom and kernel im running and it seems to point to skyraider and maybe incredikernel unless you have other suggestions. As far as rooting goes ill be using unrevoked.

Ah excellent choices my friend
You may end up trying out some other ROM's, I know I have- but I always found myself going back to that combination because of the stability, speed and battery life it has provided me.
There are plenty of ROM's I have never tried, so it's all out there to experiment with.
Believe me I flash roms more than I probably should but, Im really excited to use android the way it was meant to be used with unlimited data. Im talking 8-12 hours of continuous sirius and/or pandora usage.

It's good that you're getting it straight off so you get use to it with it on, some people have a hard time switching.
Well I use the seidio 3000mah battery which is a monster on my captivate. So the size should be no problem. With a little more research i found redemption rom which looks nice. One question I can't get a definitive answer to is on radios. I have flashed radios in the past and was wondering if its absolutely necessary to on the incredible?

As far as speed goes, I use Incredibly Reengineered its uberfast... for battery life I installed Set CPU to save on batt when I'm low, but I'm never far from a charger. If battery life is more important there's a bunch of ROMs that have excellent life but it's all personal preference.
I am going with re-engineered v2.3.2 and using the lou's #8 which is already built into the rom. As far as sense goes I'll be stripping it and using the aosp theme. As far as radio's go should I just use the one that is shipped with the phone which is being delivered on friday or should I flash a different one? What about HBoot version? I didnt see if I needed to update HBoot to a different version. Thanks in advance!

If you're in the affected area, maybe update your PRL and see if that gets it back on track? Or maybe it's just all the new speedy users in Atlanta sucking the bandwidth from the rest of us ;]
Heres the thing I live in McDonough (metro ATL) and work in ATL, since this service has been turned on, it seems like the penetration is so much worse, no signal in any building. I'm no noob, so I have done everything I know how to reset the signal, nothing works, 3 phones. And many other friends have the same problem. I'll be complaining to Sprint soon. Now when I'm outside I get a great signal, with the same speed as before this service was turned on, so take that as you will.

Actually I have all the modems on my sdcard, and now the fb27 thanks to calkulin. Ive always had the best results for signal strength with eg31, best speed with fb21. Just installed fb27, but it hasnt helped the problem Im seeing, this is with my touch and 3 og epics (brother, mom, my og epic). Im also seeing when indoors and use an internet speed test app its choosing out of state servers, but when outside and I have a signal it is choosing a close location, but still jumps from 3/4/5 bars to no bars, and internet speeds drop out about every 15secs for 5 secs. Everything Im saying is well tested on 4 phones, and 1 in 2 places by me, still seeing the same thing. This is either being worked on or just the way the new signal is pulsing.

Epic 4G Still Shines with WiMAX

So I was at the Chiefs / Raiders game yesterday in Kansas City (lets all leave the "Why would you subject yourself to 'entertainment' of such a questionable nature?" jeers for another thread). My wife and I go to a lot of games here and we always show up several hours before kickoff and tailgate in the parking lot just outside the stadium. I've always had really good luck with the Sprint 4G WiMAX network here in town and near the stadium is no exception. I'm always zipping along with my Epic while others nearby are complaining of lack of bandwidth even with a full signal meter. I always get a good laugh.
Everyone I brought with me this weekend of course had their own smart devices. A Sprint iPhone 5, a Sprint EVO 4G LTE, a Sprint iPhone 4S, ... among others. No one (LTE folks included) was getting any bandwidth. So I became the afternoon hero when I kicked on my hotspot for a few minutes (Thanks, Necrosan!) and allowed folks to update their facebook pages with pictures of our tailgating extravaganza and check their fantasy lineups and such and so forth.
Funny. My Sprint account has been eligible for upgrade for a while now ... but I keep dreaming up reasons to hold onto this Epic. I think this weekend drug me back quite a few steps from jumping over that upgrade cliff. It's sure nice to play with CM9 and CM10 on this thing. But mostly I enjoy the stability of my Epic running mature FC09 and EL30 stuff. And when I can haul in the kind of bandwidth I did the other day when even the newest, flashiest devices fell flat on their faces, it makes me even more satisfied with my setup.
Thanks to all the developers who helped make this device what it is. And an extra special thanks to those still around who continue to improve upon it.

Well simply There probably weren't any LTE available in that area. i'm sure they had 3G they were just complaining it was slow most likely.

Oh there is most certainly LTE in the area. As evidenced by the icons on there phones. Just not built out enough yet to handle any kind of capacity.
As for 3G ... yes it was slow. Very slow due to congestion.
I agree with you, OP. When I was in SF for Pride I couldn't get 3G for anything, too many people for the available network to handle. (Hundreds of thousands in downtown)
Wimax was flawless though.

Are you all still getting a solid connection? I live in Blue Springs and work in Grandview, I used to get very solid 4G connection at work and a little bit of one at home, but in the past two weeks or so I got nothin.....
Thought maybe it was my phone, but the local sprint shop ran some tests on it and its not, they said there were upgrades going on to a bunch of towers around KC so the service may up and down for a while.......

I live in Lenexa and work in Mission and haven't seen any problems. Was at Arrowhead this Sunday and didn't have a problem there either.
Bad luck?
I don't know......I'm about to give sprint an ear full though LOL
What are you running and the settings?
I still think I did something, but I have no idea what.

I used Odin to flash the stock FC09 tar -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592994
I rooted according to qbking's instructions using a deodexed FC09 (MTD) stock ROM from kennyglass posted here -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1580931
Then flashed the latest Shadow Kernel from bbelos (no over clocks or undervolts) -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668491
I do have my own short list of mods that I've made to it since then, but nothing that would affect performance.
Thats really not much different from I've done.....but I start from your beginning and go from there, can't hurt. Thanks a lot for your trouble, I appreciate it.

No worries. Hope it helps.

So you don't use the Nexus S 4G modem, just the FC09 stock modem?

Yes, stock FC09 modem. It gets put in with the clean flash of the stock tar using Odin.
The only NS4G modem I know of supports CyanogenMod ROMs only.

Moving Forward

Hey everyone. I really don't know how to say this, nor do I think anyone will even care because I'm practically a ghost to the forums, but I just wanted to make a thread and thank everyone here from the past and present for the good year and a half-or so that I've been here on the E4G forums. Last night while randomly browsing some Sprint forums for the Galaxy Nexus (I just love to peek at other phones to see what's going on with them), I came across a post saying you can text the word 'upgrade' to the number 1311 to find out if your eligible for an upgrade or not. While this may be common knowledge to the masses, I did not know this and texted the number. Low and behold, I was indeed eligible for an upgrade! With that being said, money was definitely an issue here because I am flat broke, so my upgrade options were limited. From Sprint's website I could choose from a free SGS3, an LG Optimus G, or a Sprint Vital. And maybe something else I'm forgetting. I planned on going with the S3 because it had the most developer support from anything else listed. However, I went to a Sprint store, and it was only free for a new line. That, and also the only free phones Sprint offered me from the store was a Sprint Vital, or a iPhone 4S.
So I went to Best Buy. They offered me a few more options, a couple being the Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G (Which has NO support whatsoever), the Vital once again, and the Optimus G. So... I went with the Optimus G. I've been reading that is pretty much a branded/skinned Nexus 4.
Its definitely...... Nice. Fast as all **** most definitely, fluid, and sexy. The development for the LGOG is kinda weak at best, but it's getting there. There's CM10.1 builds for it, as well as some AOKP builds, so there's that. I definitely need to get a screen protector and case for it though.
Alright, this is way longer than I wanted it to be, so I'm gonna end it here. Thanks for all the roms and memories guys. I'll still be around because the LGOG Dev scene is kinda whack at the moment, and I plan on holding on to my Epic for quite a while. So...... Yeah, lol.
Stay gold, everyone.

If I recall correctly, xboxfanj got an LGOG as well, so hopefully he can get some nice stuff going for you guys

Man... I wish I could've gotten a GNex or something >_<
Rooting this thing has been nothing but a complete pain in ass. While there is a sort of a one click root kinda thing, which did work, it was finnicky as hell. And after that, throwing on a custom rom is even worse. It really seems like a 50/50 chance the ROM will boot, not because of user error, but because the phone really just seems unstable and not rom-friendly like our good old Epics are. I dunno, maybe because this phone is still relatively new or something, but this is definitely the biggest headache I've come across with Android at all. :banghead:
The stock rom is retardedly fast and fluid, yes, but this thing needs an AOSP rom on it.

I think I remember reading somewhere that there's some sort of hardware mod to basically make it a nexus 4. Like use Nexus 4 radios, Roms, etc. Only I'm not sure if such a mod would exist.
Never mind, only gsm versions can do it, I totally forgot about that part.

Yeah I seen that mod in the AT&T OG forums, and it looked pretty damn sweet. I finally got my OG running a CM10.1 build, so I practically have a Nexus 4 at this point
The only thing I've noticed about the AOSP roms is an extremely low signal reading, no matter where I am. Us always either at two bars or one, haven't seen 3 or above not once. But as long as it doesn't actually affect data speeds or calls I guess, lol.
