hi guys, I thought'd I'd share a tip with everybody.
I take tons of pictures and I keep everything, so my photo directory was upwards of 800 pictures at one point, when I was still using my X10.
I started moving my photos into separate directories, but that are still detected by the Gallery app.
So I keep my most recent photos in ..\DCIM\100ANDRO\ and then keep other photos organized in:
..\DCIM\2010 (X10)
..\DCIM\2011 01 to 03 (X10)
..\DCIM\2011 04 to 06 (X10)
..\DCIM\2011 07 to 08 (X10)
..\DCIM\2011 09 to 12 (Arc)
Gallery will still be able to view the subfolders, but this way, you won't have more than 100 or 200 per folder, which Gallery will handle quite easily.
If you take more pictures than that, just separate into smaller month increments, but I suspect you'll just run out of room
The naming structure is so that the directories stay in chronological order, but feel free to use your own!
I organise into folders too, but I also use quickpic instead of stock gallery.

Sorry to ask in this thread but what's the default location for Pictures, Music and Videos on the arc?
For some reason, it's not detecting my music or videos but there are folders for the same. I was just wondering if I altered the names of the folders by accident.
For me the default locations are:
Images (stock):
/sdcard/image
Images (camera photos & vids):
/sdcard/DCIM/100ANDRO
Music:
/sdcard/music
That's what it is on mine - hope this is what you were after
Thanks. That's exactly what I was asking for.
Everything seems correct on my SD card but neither images seem to be detected in the gallery nor music in the music player.
Any suggestions?
EDIT: Camera images do turn up in the gallery. Fb pictures are visible; just not the regular pictures.

Try clearing data in settings and if that fails pop out the battery for 10 seconds.
Never thought of that. Thanks.
I take alot of pictures aswell, almost hit the 1000 mark

Happened with mine when I updated it to .145.
I backed up everything, hit factory rest and restored the phone using PCC.
That solved it for me.

Everything else on the phone works well apart from the photo album, it just refuses to load up at all, and i cannot even open up pictures through explorer.
It's really frustrating as all hell..
remove all your pics off your sd to your computer. mkae sure there are no pictures on the card. Take apicture with your camera and see If it can view it now. I had the same problem untill I found out one of the pictures were causing photo album to crash. I went through 2 phones before I realised the problem was just one picture.

Thanks man, It worked. Found out it was this huge 500meg video i recorded the other day.
9 out of 10 times, nothing loads in the gallery. Sometimes the folder shows up but no pictures, and sometimes just the yellow/black background. I can reboot my phone but the problem will persist again after leaving it on for awhile.
Anyone else having this problem?
I am with Virtuous 9.0 and 9.5 which uses the HTC Gallery. Only folder it displays is the camera shots folders. There are a couple of other folders on my phone that won't shot up (like my DroCap folder).
the 3d gallery is total garbage.
Believe it or not, the stock gallery that came with the espresso sense on the Mytouch slide was better than the 3d gallery. At least all the pictures showed up and it wasn't dog crap slow.
Do you guys have tons of pictures on your phones?
I may have 100 seperated into folders on my sd card. Just wondering if the amount of pics may be the problem.
Have over 300 pictures in my gallery and MOST of the time it works just fine. Sometimes it will open up and not display anything. A force close and a cache clear typically fixes that though.
I've also noticed mine sometimes does not load any pictures and I have to close it and try again. It's been working pretty good the past few days though.
Any chance at getting the old-school gallery version on these G2s? I tried QuickPic and really liked it, but the only downfall is that it took a while to generate thumbnail images when you launched it. Worse of all, it seemed to do that every time I started that application, but it is better than the 3-D gallery.

Here is a thread for the old 2d gallery.
I tried it but I was too lazy to let it make thumbnails of all my pictures and I nandroided back. I may try it again if there are good results.

You could try clearing cache for the gallery. Settings - manage applications - all - gallery then clear cache.

When it happens, use Rescan Media. It will scan your phone and show up all of your pictures and videos.

I don't think it has something to do with the quantity. The 1st time it occured to me it was 10 days after I got my phone and I had something like 50 pics in it.
From what I've read since this is a well-known bug.
Lately my gallery has been acting crazy. It doesn't display all of my pictures. It takes the latest picture taken with the camera and replaces all of my other pictures with that image. So I have a bunch of copies of that one image. Then when I try to delete one, it FC's.
Any ideas?
I'm running Liberty 1.5 btw...
I've had something like that happen too. When I would view a picture in one folder it would display a different one. To fix it I made more folders and spread out my pics like that. Please note I have A LOT of pictures
This may seem like a stupid solution, but have you tried a reboot? I had the gallery act up on me a few times and a reboot usually did the trick. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
i know with mine the app touchdown stores my corp email .jpg and it causes the gallery to not open. so i have to bros we and del the image files. which this is a pain because every email i get someone has that damn pic stored in there sig so its a constant battle.
Sometimes the database the Gallery uses gets corrupt where it displays wonky pics or doesn't even open. To rebuild the database, go to Settings, Applications, Manage Applications, All tab. Select the Gallery app and then select Clear Data. Repeat for the Media Storage app. Then reboot your phone. It will then scan your phone for pics and video and rebuild the database. It may take a while if you have lots of pics.

I'm noticing that I'm building up Image data even though I'm deleting every picture I take off of the device once it's uploaded to the cloud. However when I check the SD card storage the pictures are still there. Thumbnails as well. Hire can I fix this?
Bueller.... Bueller?
So far I've tried deleting data from Photos camera, and media storage to no avail.
I'm thinking it might have to do with the trash holding photos for 60 days before permanently deleting.

Not sure if you've done this, but with newest version of photos, you can go into Settings and select Free Up Space and then it'll look for already uploaded photo to the cloud and remove it from your device. I do this about every 2 weeks to free up the device. I recommend cross reference the photos between app and photos.google.com to make sure. Also have NAS locally to back it up too.
I have this issue where my pictures (camera pics and otherwise) doesn't show up in the photos app.
Using a file explorer app, I see that all my images are there in the DCIM folder, so they are definitely still on the phone.
Using the likes of WhatsApp and similar, I used to be able to select and send pictures, and it would categorize them into the folders I've downloaded them into.
For instance, while camera pictures are in /DCIM/Camera - images downloaded from apps and websites are in either /Download or /Pictures/{app_name}
Additionally, the file explorer tends to categorize your files into subcategories like "pictures", "apps" etc., but it doesn't do that for older files - only for new ones. So if I take a picture with the camera, it'll pop into Google Photos as well as being categorized a "picture" by the file explorer. Physically, it still has the same location as all the other camera pictures, which is /DCIM/Camera
My question is, how do I get the phone/Google Photos/file categorizer/whatever to "map" my pictures as being pictures again?

UPDATE: So it appears, if there's a ".nomedia" file in any directory, it will not show files in this and recursively in media applications (photos, music, etc.) -- this could be what's causing this. But then I don't understand why NEW files shows up.
Is it recommended to delete the .nomedia file in root/sdcard ? I ask because I figure it's there for a reason.
having a .NOMEDIA file on a folder will cause it to be excluded
thats a feature
Also, if the folder name has a . in it at the beggining it will also do that... for example changing Camera to .Camera will exclude it

Yeah thanks, but removing the file does nothing. Old pictures are still nowhere to be found in gallery apps like Google Photos.
Is there a way to "re-map/re-index" media files?
i just want to state the obvious.... but did you open PHOTOS, then click the top left hambuger button and click DEVICE FOLDERS ??? According to you nothing still shows after this??
If you install an aftermarket app like Quickpic, does it still not show them?
Stopped using google photos for same reason. I flash roms like atleast once a month, all the photos that i took after flashing rom will show up, all the ones that were taken before flash wont. It has nothing to do with .nomedia or stuff like that, it just wont show them. If i go through directories i can reach them, i can also see them using any other gallery app, this only happens in google photos. I had a theory it had something to do with cloud backup, as if photos arent backed up in cloud it wont show them.

Thanks chaco81, I have tried device folders - and nothing is in there.
Next up, installed Quickpic and now they are all there. They are all categorized exactly as they should be. Fantastic! Just really weird it doesn't work with Google Photos, which leads me to this comment by @feis ....

Dude, thank you! That must be it, then. How weird is that? The cloud thing I theorized as well, as I don't want Google backing them up and therefore have it disabled. But like I said, I just installed Quickpic and now they're all there, neatly categorized into "screenshots", "camera", "Download" etc.
Next issue: This still persist with WhatsApp. When I go into "Gallery" (to send a picture or video), it'll only the new photos and videos -- none of the old ones. This, again, leads me to believe something is not as it should be. What causes this, and how do you fix it? Do you need to somehow "rescan" and "reindex" your media files?
Uninstalled google photos, started using app called "piktures" and all my problems were gone.
If you are going to use quickpic I would side load the last version before cheetah took over and ruined the app with all the cloud ***t Trying to think of what the last version was, maybe 4.5.2

I read about that. I just installed Quickpic, and I don't get what the big issue is. The only cloud-thing I saw was an icon that I could easily disable/remove.
@feis
How exactly did you remove Google Photos? I can't uninstall.
I too have this issue. Annoying and I really should just use a different pic app
Just a quick update on this: The issue has been _sort of_ fixed by just switching to another photos app. So I think the problem is just that Google Photos doesn't reindex, and there doesn't seem to be a way to force it.
However, other apps that has access to media such as WhatsApp -- in this I still don't have the option of viewing older photos. So apps like WhatsApp's gallery feature, doesn't reindex either. Pretty annoying actually.
