I've noticed on here the official T-mobile gingerbread ota update that can be downloaded for the G2. Does one exist for the MT4G yet? I have not rooted or modified my handset yet because I was strictly Blackberry until a few weeks ago & I haven't read enough to feel comfortable altering my phone. I did however, try the G2 update b4 I realized it was for the G2. Needless to say it didn't work! But I figured if one was available for the G2, surely the MT4G should be nearly ready for d/l.

Hey, if you are impatient like me and don't want to wait for the official OTA update to hit your My Touch 4g, you can go to your local T Mobile store as of August the 6th and they can do the update for you via a micro SD card. You need to make sure you back up all your stuff via google and your micro SD card and you will lose all of your apps so write them down so you can re download them. This will completely wipe your phone when it does it. I just did it yesterday and am now rocking GB 2.3.4 on my phone and loving it so far. Battery seems to be a bit better and there's a new radio and my cell reception seems to have improved some. Good luck, I'm like you didn't want to root my phone...I have a rooted Nook and don't mind playing with it but didn't want to chance bricking my only phone.
I thought it would re-install your apps? Or so I've been reading.
Also I called a couple nearby tmo stores, they haven't got the SD card yet.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using Tapatalk
It didn't with mine. Once you log into your google account and go to the market, any apps you have purchased will show up, but all the free ones, you have to re download...or at least I did. As far as them saying they don't have it...
I went to my local store before calling and almost got into an argument with them about the whole thing. Then I finally asked them to look around and see if it was there and they found an envelope and "tada!" there was the SD card with the instructions on how to update. The girl at the store even said "a lot of times our customers know more about what is going on than we do" Are you freaking kidding me!!?? Anyway, it might not be a bad idea to wait until tomorrow to check since that is probably when the managers would be working and maybe they will know to check their mailboxes...

1. Download the file
2. Rename the file PD15IMG.zip (it should already be a zip file do not add .zip as the name just file type)
3. Move or Copy the file to the root of the SD card
4. Turn off the phone and remove the battery (unless you have fast boot already off in your phone, then no need to take out battery)
5. Hold down the volume down button while pressing the power button to turn it on
6. A menu will pop up and a few seconds later it will check for a the file you placed on the sd card
7. It will load some stuff on the right hand side of the screen on top.
8.It will say ready to update press something idk remember what it says
9.then it will begin. During process it will shut down once i believe and reboot to same menu and continue.
10. Make sure your phone is good battery. Just to make sure keep it plugged in to wall.
WARNING: This will basically do a factory reset on your phone
BUT: If you have your gmail backed up and everything, every single one of your downloaded apps(paid or free) should be re downloaded once you set up your gmail again on first time setup.
I did this and i am completely happy with with Gingerbread and NO this is not a made up rom this is the stock version.
Hope it helped and if you do this tell me how it went.
PS. Dont keep me responsible if you screw up somehow lol

can anyone confirm that there is a update in settings that will download the latest version? Since this build number is higher then that of the official OTA release I dont quite understand how it will update, generally speaking build numbers go up not down
I called my two local tmobile stores, and neither had the sd cards. But the second store I called, the guy said rumor has it that this friday the 12th all stores will get the sd card update and the OTA will begin to everyone

Ok, in the end, I called 5 stores, and one had the SD card update. Its half an hour away though, so im waiting til friday to see if it really pushes out then, or comes to a closer location. Otherwise, a 30 minute drive for an update that erases everything

I spoke with tmobile customer service and they said only corporate stores can do it.
I did go to my local store today, they had it & I was able to get the update. As far as erasing everything, well all your apps that are installed through the Android market will re- install as long as you have them backed up. There is a setting somewhere that you can choose to automatically reinstall apps. Maybe in "storage & SD card"

How was the update performed? Was it a PD15IMG.zip?

I'm looking to update my Inc. to 2.2 but the ROMs suggest upgrading to radio 2.x. I'm pretty new to this and a little confused by the instructions.
The instructions I'm following are these
How to flash the 2.x radio.
Rooted
1. Download PB31IMG.zip and place it in the root of you SDCARD. Make sure the FS is FAT32, otherwise PB13IMG.zip will not flash.
1a. Link has been updated so you no longer have to apply the VZW exchange OTA.
2. Now go to the bootloader.
2a. Run 'adb reboot oem-42' if powered up or hold Power + Volume Down if your phone is off.
3. It should automatically start loading PB31IMG.zip. Then accept it when it asks you to load it or not (pretty sure Vol Up).
4. You are now completely stock. You should remove PB31IMG from your SDCARD now.
5. Download dinc_ota.zip, rename it to update.zip and place it in the root of your SDCARD.
6. Now boot into recovery and apply the zip.
6a. adb reboot recovery if powered up or Power + Volume Down then select Recovery.
6b. Now hit Power + Volume Up to bring up the Recovery menu.
6c. Now select apply update.zip
7. Go to Settings > About phone > Software information > Baseband version and verify that it's 2.05.00.06.11.
8. Now download and run Unrevoked 3 to reroot and install ClockworkMod recovery.
9. Now you can go ahead and do a Full Wipe then install the Stock Froyo rom.

I'm actually lost right away with making sure the FS is Fat32, what is the FS and how do I check this
After that I assume I'm rebooting in Bootloader, is there a difference between that and bootin in recovery?
I guess I'm just looking for a walkthrough in lay mans terms.
Maybe format size? When you hook the drive up to the pc, go to my computer, locate the sd card, right click and then format. It gives you an option to format in FAT32, make sure its checked. Then format.
Place the PB31IMG.zip at the root of the sd card.
Go into bootloader and the file will be checked by the phone then ask you if you want to update. Yes.
Reboot.
Enjoy.

FS == File System. htc_woe_is_me is spot on with what to do.
I believe if you're going to use the 2.15x radio ... you need to make sure you are S-Off using hte Unr3voked Forever tool.
If you're using the 2.05x radio, you should be fine without going S-Off
Okay, lets start with the basics. Fs is file system. There are different types of file systems. Fat32 and ntfs are common. You format your SD card as fat32, cause that is what's best for your phone. The SD card that came with your phone should be good to go. Before you follow these instructions you must be sure to accompolish a few things.
1)First you must be rooted. Unrevoked has the one stop root tool.
2)Next you must perform the unrevoked forever tool. This tool will grant you nand access allowing your radio to be updated..
have you performed these steps?
I Dont want to flood you with instructions if you aren't fully ready yet

Macs are for people that just "want things to work*". If you wish to tinker (ie. learn and have fun), get a PC.
If you REALLY want to get into tinkering/hacking**/learning, skip windows and go straight to Linux. It won't be easy, but you will learn skills that are incredibly valuable***.
* - By that, I mean people that want their computers to hold their hand and think for them.
** - Search for computer hacking on wikipedia before you make any bad assumptions (sorry, I still can't post links).
*** - Why yes, I am a well paid Linux admin with incredible job security, why do you ask?

qmmartman711 was correct: Go to your utilities folder and open the Disk Utility app. Click on the disk that you want to reformat (it will appear in the left pane). In the right pane there will be options (First Aid, Erase, RAID, Restore). Click on the Erase tab/button. From there you'll see an Entry near the middle of the window that says 'Format' with a drop down list. If it already says MS-DOS(FAT) you're in good shape. Fill in the name you want the volume to have and press Erase.
BTW: In response to an earlier quote about Mac/PC/Linux. Macs are at their core BSD/Unix you can drop down to a shell any time and do whatever you want.
So I formatted it to FAT32 and placed the file in the root of my sd card, the problem is when I run bootloader it doesn't automatically do anything. Both the directions I'm following and the guys in this post say it should automatically open the file but thats not happening.
Any thoughts?
any ideas?

I agree for the most part I build PC's and only recommend them because It brings in money. I personally use a Mac. I agree that PC's give you more bottom level access but 90 percent of what you can do on a PC you can do with MAC. Dont hate on us MAC users!

It's not the fact that he hated on Mac users, it's just the specifics of what he wrote. But we digress.
Once you get onto the boot loader (get to boot loader by simultaneously pressing the power and volume up button) and wait a little bit it should ask for confirmation to update phone. Just press volume up button to confirm and there you sucesfully updated your phone.

I just realized that my phone is no long reading my SD Card, I think after reformatting it, it started with the problems. That might be why it's not picking up the update.
Not I can't put anything on my SD Card when I plug it into my computer, I get a Mac error code -8003. Looks like I ruined my SD Card? Guess I'll pick up a new one, load my back up onto it and just go back to stock.
Why don't you format the card from your phone? That way it will definitely be recognizeable.

That didn't even cross my mind. That worked as easily as you'd expect. I think I'll be restoring it to stock, since I can't figure out the radio thing. With SkyRaider 2.5.2 I tend to have times when 3G just doesn't work at all, and my internet is dead. I'm going to assume that has something to do with the radio upgrade. So I'll just downgrade back to 2.1 and wait it out.
Thanks for all the help guys.
Sorry you had to revert back to stock. Some people claim their radio updates give them better service. Some say less Service... Haha, I have the same service. But anyway, let me know if you wanna try again, skyraider and cm6 are awesome roms, and I'd hate for you to miss out!

"Force OTA"
UPDATE:: IF you cannot for whatever reason load the file to your SD Card, gmail yourself the link (below) and download it using Dolphin HD browser. I just confirmed it works on my phone, however, it does not work with the stock browser. Check the market for Dolphin HD, it's free. Client mode is set to desktop, which is under settings once in Dolphin HD. I was able to download the update.zip to the phone rather quickly over 4G Other browsers may work, I prefer that one though. Doesn't hurt to try. The stock one will not save the file, though will navigate to it.
As I first posted yesterday, there are [now 3] ways of downloading and installing the new EB13 Froyo release. If you have a Windows PC, there is a new utility that Samsung has released to flash the phone via PC. I personally couldn't get it to run on my Win 7 x64 laptop due to the enlarged font I run on my high-res laptop screen. Additionally, the 200MB file will wipe your phone completely clean. If you have a "trouble free" factory install of the current 2.1.1, the update method contained here is your best bet. Trouble free meaning that only bugs of the software are present. If you have issues above and beyond that of all other eclair users, you may want to completely wipe your phone.
The easiest and fastest method is to visit Samsung's Sprint Epic download page here http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SPH-D700ZKASPR and click the "Software" link (Manuals is the default landing page) and download the 91.14MB File labeled as for MAC OS. You will notice the much larger windows download (200MB) which is not needed, and may not work.
After you download the zip file, copy it over to your SD Card in your phone by either hooking it up and mounting it as you would normally do to copy files to your phone, or as I did, place the Micro SD card into an adapter and insert it into your computer. Copy the .zip file you downloaded onto the SD card; do not place it into any directory.
With your phone powered off, insert the SD Card back into the phone and replace the battery cover. Now, while holding both volume up and volume down rocker buttons (yes, you can push both at the same time), hold the camera button down as well and then press and hold the power on key. You will hold all 4 buttons on the phone until it boots into the flash menu.
Use the volume down button to scroll to..
"Apply SDcard: Update.Zip"
Push the Home key on the bottom of the phone and the update will commence.
Once it's complete, the phone may reboot into the menu again, at which time you select "Reboot" and hit the home key again.
The phone may reboot a few more times after it's first boot, and it may take a few minutes to fully get up and running. If it acts strange for a few minutes, this is normal.
Performing the update this way did not destroy any of my data, texts, applications, contacts, etc. Everything was exactly the same, except for the new version of Android. You must have a stock phone or the update most likely will not work. No ROMS, etc may be installed for the update to work. Before doing the update, go through your applications and uninstall anything you don't want / use.
You may also wait for the OTA update, but it will take a while to download, use up your battery, and you have to wait longer. It has already been confirmed several times, the 2 files are EXACTLY the same (OTA and the 91.14mb file from samsung) DO NOT waste time using a link to another file, there is no point and only risk in obtaining the file from somewhere else.
Before I began, I copied things off of my SD card that I wanted and performed a format on it. If you have apps installed on the SD Card, and you choose to do this, you may need to reinstall them. Once the update was complete, I copied the directories and files back to the SD Card.

This has been answered in one of those posts with several hundred replies (if I had the answer on-hand, I would post it). I kept the Epic stock to avoid any issues, so my update was rather simple. A few people have already had to reload their phones a couple of times before everything worked out.

DK28 wasn't official. The latest official release is DI18 - 2.1.1. This updates STOCK 2.1.1 ONLY.
I didn't care to fool with the phone originally due to not knowing the exact release date of froyo. It has been way over due, but I honestly didn't have any reason to mod. Froyo has enhanced the phone, but honestly doesn't provide anything new that would change the way I already use the device. GPS is faster to acquire in google maps, but in GPS Test, it was always fairly instant. It's also reports more accurate, reports being key, it wasn't ever off but by 20 feet anyway, which is about all you can expect on 3D accuracy.
I used the .exe file from Samsung website to flash my phone and works like a champ.
Now some minor quirks with Froyo but will address them in different threads.
Thanks for the help!!

Does it just give you errors all around? And for the price you paid, you should have just gotten it at a retail store (granted you would have needed a contract too). Maybe the guy locked it up or something.
I really don't know what to tell you. Sorry
Well as long as u can still get in the phone all u gotta do is download a sense rom from the development section ..I reccomend mikshift 1.1 .. then once that is downloaded put it on ur sd card ..I'm assuming u have one..okay so after the mikshift zip file is in the root of ur sd card u have to to go into recovery. U can do this by holding the power button and then tapping on reboot more options should come up and one of them should say recovery.I belive that cm7 does have that option....anyway once ur in recovery go to backup and restore and make a backup just in case.once the backup is done u should still be in recovery then wipe data and wipe cache then go into advance and wipe dalvik cache...then go back and go to install zip from sd card and choose the mikshift.zip file which should be all the way at the bottom of the list if u put it in the right place.so choose that and once its done reboot ur phone and wait awhile for it to boot up then go to settings and u should be able to update the prl

I don't think that's the case. The phone was on and working when we called Sprint. Everything was fine with it. But I guess to activate it from Sprint, it has to be the stock programming. Which I guess makes sense.
I didn't want to buy the phone with a contract. That's why I went that route. And that's by far the cheapest I found one. I'm sure it's a simple fix for someone who knows about this stuff. But I don't know anything about them.

Ok, I got most of what you're saying. The only thing you lost me on is when you said putting "the mikshift zip file is in the root of your sd card". How do I know where that is. I created a folder and added a zip file in there. But does it need to go somewhere more specific?

Ideally you want to put the .zip on the root of your sd (not inside any folders) but it will still work from inside the folder. Once your in recovery and perform a backup/wipe, choose install from zip, locate the folder you placed the file in,Then select and clockwork will do the rest. Then reboot and enjoy.
yes.. take it out of that folder and put it where all the other folders on ur sd card are ..in other words just drag it onto ur sdcard where it shows as a removable disk on windows.just straight into that
ahhh, you guys are awesome! Worked like a charm. The file I downloaded earlier was an .exe file. Maybe that's why it wasn't working?
Anyways, it's up and running!! I really appreciate with the help. I guess now I need to learn how to maximize a rooted phone!

Glad you got it working.
The EXE files only work if you run it from your computer, by hooking up your phone to the PC, via the usb cable. You would need HTC Sync installed, as well. Zip files can be flashed directly from the phone, through recovery.

this might help if you're still having issues; so far i think there is a lot of promise with cyanogen, if you can figure it out.
I was out of the country and used my phone on wifi. Of course as soon as I am gone, I get the notification for the 2.3 update. I downloaded it (160 megs or so) over wifi, but didn't install it since I wasn't sure if it would turn off my airplane mode and I would get slammed by tons of txt which add up $$ quick. It was always in my notification bar for the update and when I cleared all notifications it was still there under "ongoing". I landed back in the US and turned on the cell. A few minutes later I looked in the notifications and the update was gone. Anyone know where the file was saved on my phone so I can go ahead and run the update? Thanks in advance. I checked the "about" screen and I am still running 2.2 (was hoping it automatically updated without me knowing it).

here, download THIS FILE, and rename it to "PD15IMG.zip"
place it in the root of your sdcard, reboot into hboot/bootloader by holding power +volume down buttons, then follow the onscreen instructions.
good luck
That file saranhai gave you is exactly what you need. Do as he says, and you'll get what you are wanting. Its the least dangerous flash you can make to your phone. If you walked into T-mobile and asked for the update they would pop in an sd card with that file and follow the same procedure.
BTW, its important that the name be all caps.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe doing this manual install will wipe your device's memory. Just a heads up as a reminder to backup your data beforehand.
Yeah, it will. Sms backup & restore will save your sms messages at least.

Thanks for the help. Is there any way to run the update that I already downloaded ? I assume that it is stored somewhere, and wanted to see if anyone had an idea where.
Hello,
I really dont know if the file has the same name but you can try using find.
Something like that :
Code:
adb shell find / -name PD15IMG.zip

Hey yall,
I recently purchased what I consider to be one of the best phones one the market (Epic 4g) for the second time and this one I bought off of Swappa.com for $100. The phone is in great condition, with ICS which my last Epic didnt have, and it also has cyanogen 9 mod which my old phone didnt have either. I have never modified a phone or rooted them or anything like that. But I like the cyanogen mod so I dont mind it. The phone also has the latest clockwork recovery.
But the phone cannot activate with Sprint because the rep says the numbers have been wiped from the phone. I read somewhere that I may need a certain kernel that mimics the codes or replaces the codes or something?
Can anyone point me to a stable, reliable source for a kernel that will let me activate the phone and keep cyanogen 9 mod?
Sorry if this is just a total f**#$# noob question that makes you want to pull your hair out but I honestly dont know anything about the latest software or anything like that. However I am very resourceful and I got this far, I think I can install a kernel if someone could just point me in the direction of a good file to download.
Thanks in advance!

can you tell me where to find the "temporary gb rom"? Also looks like I need the EL29 EMMC utility, can you tell me where that is as well?
And how to get mobile ODIN on my phone? Do I need mobile ODIN or can I use regular ODIN? In the video he said you could use either one...
Sorry again for the noob questions. This is overwhelming.

We don't have mobile odin. You will need to odin stock and the cwm recovery and nubernel so you can keep the recovery because samsung has it so stock recovery returns after a reboot, and nubecoder fixed that so you'll need his kernel. Then you can reflash cm9. Once the cm team or me include nexus s 4g ril and modem in a build, then we can make updating prl and profile and activating possible. With ours it is impossible.

There is no link inthe OP, there is a link in a quoted reply and while I got that link to work at home and began the download,I cannot begin the download here on my work computer. Is there an updated link anywhere for the stock el30 multiboot for samsung epic? Any clue why the download worked at home but not on my work PC? It might be a firewall or something so I am going to go home and put the file on my thumb drive.

If he already has CM9 then he already has custom recovery (and root, etc) All he needs is the multiboot flashable to temporarily boot into the stock rom. The latest version is FC09 - I'll see if I can link to that thread, but it is in the development section (Epic 4G development)
EDIT: Here is the multiboot thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...te PRL and Calibrate Sensors for CM9 and AOKP
The OP of that thread contains a link to the correct page on the Epic CM team blog, in which you find full instructions, a link and the md5sum (definitely verify the md5 before continuing)
You will need your computer to extract the archive (most android apps for archive files seem to struggle with this one, and while I swear I did it successfully once, I have been unable to duplicate that result or find the app that worked), and it's generally easier to download on the PC as well to avoid a few quirks.

That link is the one in the previous post I mentioned. I got the link to download at my house, my work had it firewalled.
Ok so I got the file, now how do I install it or run it? Just put it on the SD card and then boot in recovery and flash it to everything? Do I need to unzip the files before putting them on the SD card or anything?

Yeah, I just noticed that TazFanatic had already posted it without a description - but the same link from two people is better than no links from anyone, I suppose
That archive needs to be extracted to your sdcard in a very specific directy structure. Check the instruction in the blog where you downloaded the multiboot, but I believe you should be able to extract to the root of the sdcard (with a computer, not your phone - I can't stress that enough) with the option checked to recreate the folder structure.
Once extracted, the actual flashable zip is found in the FC09 folder, which is in the multiboot folder (and may still be EL30, although I have an updated version which I was sure came from that page). Flashing that zip from custom recovery will not actually install anything, but it will reboot the phone after setting it up to boot the rom on the sdcard instead of reading the internal storage where your rom (CM9) is installed.
But as I said, that page should cover all of the details, so be sure to read it thoroughly and you shouldn't have any problems (or additional questions on the subject) from this point forward

Go to the settings screen (menu capacitive key, then "settings" on the touch screen - just in case, I don't know how familiar you are with android or the Epic so I'm just covering the bases, lol)
From there, look for the "storage" sub menu, where you'll be able to see if the phone is detecting the sd card (if you have the card in and it does NOT give you the option to mount or unmount the sd card, then it thinks no card is present)
If the phone is also not detecting the sdcard, then it sounds like the card was corrupted - you may have to reformat it, which will erase everything on it. If it is detected, then maybe rebooting your computer will clear out whatever is preventing it from detecting the card when you put it in the computer... but it sounds like you'll most likely find that the phone isn't even detecting it - try rebooting the phone and checking it again under storage, before you start worrying about reformatting the card...
Also, for everyone else following along - this is why you should not sell a phone with a custom rom on it. Too many problems, better to give the new owner a link to xda and let them decide if they want to take the leap

I thought you said the computer wouldn't read the sd card even if you took it out of the phone and put it into the computer? Hopefully I misunderstood - your wording above seem to suggest a successful usb mount...

Now what badass stuff can I do with this cyanogen that I couldnt do with my old Epic??? What re yall's favorite features?
Can anyone tell me how to add icons to my desktop or homescreens? I want to add apps and contacts on my home screens and I cant figure out how. Its not the same as on the old epic, now when I hold on the screen it just pops up the wallpaper selector, I can't add a shortcut, someone tell me what to do?

Your first question is quite broad, so I highly recommend reading the EpicCM blog site and the official site, cyanogenmod.com, because there are so many features that we will likely forget a few (unless we read the web pages for you, but then you have to trust our summaries... anyone remember the telephone game from childhood? Best to go straight to the source, lol)
That doesn't mean we won't try, of course... but I can't decide on a favorite feature, lol. The theme engine is a well-known feature that is almost a CM exclusive (it originally came from T-Mobile phones). I'm currently on the CM7 side of my usual cycle of roms, so I have to work from memory until I decide to switch back (I stay with 7 most of the time because I can't afford a decent replacement battery, lol)
As for homescreen shortcuts, both apps and widgets can be found in the app drawer - long-press and drag to drop them on the homescreen. There may be a direct dial widget (I haven't messed with direct dial shortcuts since long before CM9, so no guarantees on this part) - dropping it on the homescreen should open a dialogue where you can choose the contact to shortcut to. I know that other widgets that have variables that lack logical default values, like the direct navigation widget, work that way... I'm just not 100% sure if there is a direct-dial, or just a shortcut to the contact info

Ok that works for apps, what about putting specific individual contacts as shortcuts on the homescreen(s)? Can't figure that one out... need to get my wifey on there... thanks in advance y'all.
