Hey yall,
I recently purchased what I consider to be one of the best phones one the market (Epic 4g) for the second time and this one I bought off of Swappa.com for $100. The phone is in great condition, with ICS which my last Epic didnt have, and it also has cyanogen 9 mod which my old phone didnt have either. I have never modified a phone or rooted them or anything like that. But I like the cyanogen mod so I dont mind it. The phone also has the latest clockwork recovery.
But the phone cannot activate with Sprint because the rep says the numbers have been wiped from the phone. I read somewhere that I may need a certain kernel that mimics the codes or replaces the codes or something?
Can anyone point me to a stable, reliable source for a kernel that will let me activate the phone and keep cyanogen 9 mod?
Sorry if this is just a total f**#$# noob question that makes you want to pull your hair out but I honestly dont know anything about the latest software or anything like that. However I am very resourceful and I got this far, I think I can install a kernel if someone could just point me in the direction of a good file to download.
Thanks in advance!
Mobile odin the kernel for directboot cwm, and then flash the temporary gb rom to provision your phone and update the prl

can you tell me where to find the "temporary gb rom"? Also looks like I need the EL29 EMMC utility, can you tell me where that is as well?
And how to get mobile ODIN on my phone? Do I need mobile ODIN or can I use regular ODIN? In the video he said you could use either one...
Sorry again for the noob questions. This is overwhelming.

We don't have mobile odin. You will need to odin stock and the cwm recovery and nubernel so you can keep the recovery because samsung has it so stock recovery returns after a reboot, and nubecoder fixed that so you'll need his kernel. Then you can reflash cm9. Once the cm team or me include nexus s 4g ril and modem in a build, then we can make updating prl and profile and activating possible. With ours it is impossible.

There is no link inthe OP, there is a link in a quoted reply and while I got that link to work at home and began the download,I cannot begin the download here on my work computer. Is there an updated link anywhere for the stock el30 multiboot for samsung epic? Any clue why the download worked at home but not on my work PC? It might be a firewall or something so I am going to go home and put the file on my thumb drive.

If he already has CM9 then he already has custom recovery (and root, etc) All he needs is the multiboot flashable to temporarily boot into the stock rom. The latest version is FC09 - I'll see if I can link to that thread, but it is in the development section (Epic 4G development)
EDIT: Here is the multiboot thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...te PRL and Calibrate Sensors for CM9 and AOKP
The OP of that thread contains a link to the correct page on the Epic CM team blog, in which you find full instructions, a link and the md5sum (definitely verify the md5 before continuing)
You will need your computer to extract the archive (most android apps for archive files seem to struggle with this one, and while I swear I did it successfully once, I have been unable to duplicate that result or find the app that worked), and it's generally easier to download on the PC as well to avoid a few quirks.

That link is the one in the previous post I mentioned. I got the link to download at my house, my work had it firewalled.
Ok so I got the file, now how do I install it or run it? Just put it on the SD card and then boot in recovery and flash it to everything? Do I need to unzip the files before putting them on the SD card or anything?

Yeah, I just noticed that TazFanatic had already posted it without a description - but the same link from two people is better than no links from anyone, I suppose
That archive needs to be extracted to your sdcard in a very specific directy structure. Check the instruction in the blog where you downloaded the multiboot, but I believe you should be able to extract to the root of the sdcard (with a computer, not your phone - I can't stress that enough) with the option checked to recreate the folder structure.
Once extracted, the actual flashable zip is found in the FC09 folder, which is in the multiboot folder (and may still be EL30, although I have an updated version which I was sure came from that page). Flashing that zip from custom recovery will not actually install anything, but it will reboot the phone after setting it up to boot the rom on the sdcard instead of reading the internal storage where your rom (CM9) is installed.
But as I said, that page should cover all of the details, so be sure to read it thoroughly and you shouldn't have any problems (or additional questions on the subject) from this point forward

Go to the settings screen (menu capacitive key, then "settings" on the touch screen - just in case, I don't know how familiar you are with android or the Epic so I'm just covering the bases, lol)
From there, look for the "storage" sub menu, where you'll be able to see if the phone is detecting the sd card (if you have the card in and it does NOT give you the option to mount or unmount the sd card, then it thinks no card is present)
If the phone is also not detecting the sdcard, then it sounds like the card was corrupted - you may have to reformat it, which will erase everything on it. If it is detected, then maybe rebooting your computer will clear out whatever is preventing it from detecting the card when you put it in the computer... but it sounds like you'll most likely find that the phone isn't even detecting it - try rebooting the phone and checking it again under storage, before you start worrying about reformatting the card...
Also, for everyone else following along - this is why you should not sell a phone with a custom rom on it. Too many problems, better to give the new owner a link to xda and let them decide if they want to take the leap

I thought you said the computer wouldn't read the sd card even if you took it out of the phone and put it into the computer? Hopefully I misunderstood - your wording above seem to suggest a successful usb mount...

Now what badass stuff can I do with this cyanogen that I couldnt do with my old Epic??? What re yall's favorite features?
Can anyone tell me how to add icons to my desktop or homescreens? I want to add apps and contacts on my home screens and I cant figure out how. Its not the same as on the old epic, now when I hold on the screen it just pops up the wallpaper selector, I can't add a shortcut, someone tell me what to do?

Your first question is quite broad, so I highly recommend reading the EpicCM blog site and the official site, cyanogenmod.com, because there are so many features that we will likely forget a few (unless we read the web pages for you, but then you have to trust our summaries... anyone remember the telephone game from childhood? Best to go straight to the source, lol)
That doesn't mean we won't try, of course... but I can't decide on a favorite feature, lol. The theme engine is a well-known feature that is almost a CM exclusive (it originally came from T-Mobile phones). I'm currently on the CM7 side of my usual cycle of roms, so I have to work from memory until I decide to switch back (I stay with 7 most of the time because I can't afford a decent replacement battery, lol)
As for homescreen shortcuts, both apps and widgets can be found in the app drawer - long-press and drag to drop them on the homescreen. There may be a direct dial widget (I haven't messed with direct dial shortcuts since long before CM9, so no guarantees on this part) - dropping it on the homescreen should open a dialogue where you can choose the contact to shortcut to. I know that other widgets that have variables that lack logical default values, like the direct navigation widget, work that way... I'm just not 100% sure if there is a direct-dial, or just a shortcut to the contact info

I'm looking to update my Inc. to 2.2 but the ROMs suggest upgrading to radio 2.x. I'm pretty new to this and a little confused by the instructions.
The instructions I'm following are these
How to flash the 2.x radio.
Rooted
1. Download PB31IMG.zip and place it in the root of you SDCARD. Make sure the FS is FAT32, otherwise PB13IMG.zip will not flash.
1a. Link has been updated so you no longer have to apply the VZW exchange OTA.
2. Now go to the bootloader.
2a. Run 'adb reboot oem-42' if powered up or hold Power + Volume Down if your phone is off.
3. It should automatically start loading PB31IMG.zip. Then accept it when it asks you to load it or not (pretty sure Vol Up).
4. You are now completely stock. You should remove PB31IMG from your SDCARD now.
5. Download dinc_ota.zip, rename it to update.zip and place it in the root of your SDCARD.
6. Now boot into recovery and apply the zip.
6a. adb reboot recovery if powered up or Power + Volume Down then select Recovery.
6b. Now hit Power + Volume Up to bring up the Recovery menu.
6c. Now select apply update.zip
7. Go to Settings > About phone > Software information > Baseband version and verify that it's 2.05.00.06.11.
8. Now download and run Unrevoked 3 to reroot and install ClockworkMod recovery.
9. Now you can go ahead and do a Full Wipe then install the Stock Froyo rom.

I'm actually lost right away with making sure the FS is Fat32, what is the FS and how do I check this
After that I assume I'm rebooting in Bootloader, is there a difference between that and bootin in recovery?
I guess I'm just looking for a walkthrough in lay mans terms.
Maybe format size? When you hook the drive up to the pc, go to my computer, locate the sd card, right click and then format. It gives you an option to format in FAT32, make sure its checked. Then format.
Place the PB31IMG.zip at the root of the sd card.
Go into bootloader and the file will be checked by the phone then ask you if you want to update. Yes.
Reboot.
Enjoy.

FS == File System. htc_woe_is_me is spot on with what to do.
I believe if you're going to use the 2.15x radio ... you need to make sure you are S-Off using hte Unr3voked Forever tool.
If you're using the 2.05x radio, you should be fine without going S-Off
Okay, lets start with the basics. Fs is file system. There are different types of file systems. Fat32 and ntfs are common. You format your SD card as fat32, cause that is what's best for your phone. The SD card that came with your phone should be good to go. Before you follow these instructions you must be sure to accompolish a few things.
1)First you must be rooted. Unrevoked has the one stop root tool.
2)Next you must perform the unrevoked forever tool. This tool will grant you nand access allowing your radio to be updated..
have you performed these steps?
I Dont want to flood you with instructions if you aren't fully ready yet

Macs are for people that just "want things to work*". If you wish to tinker (ie. learn and have fun), get a PC.
If you REALLY want to get into tinkering/hacking**/learning, skip windows and go straight to Linux. It won't be easy, but you will learn skills that are incredibly valuable***.
* - By that, I mean people that want their computers to hold their hand and think for them.
** - Search for computer hacking on wikipedia before you make any bad assumptions (sorry, I still can't post links).
*** - Why yes, I am a well paid Linux admin with incredible job security, why do you ask?

qmmartman711 was correct: Go to your utilities folder and open the Disk Utility app. Click on the disk that you want to reformat (it will appear in the left pane). In the right pane there will be options (First Aid, Erase, RAID, Restore). Click on the Erase tab/button. From there you'll see an Entry near the middle of the window that says 'Format' with a drop down list. If it already says MS-DOS(FAT) you're in good shape. Fill in the name you want the volume to have and press Erase.
BTW: In response to an earlier quote about Mac/PC/Linux. Macs are at their core BSD/Unix you can drop down to a shell any time and do whatever you want.
So I formatted it to FAT32 and placed the file in the root of my sd card, the problem is when I run bootloader it doesn't automatically do anything. Both the directions I'm following and the guys in this post say it should automatically open the file but thats not happening.
Any thoughts?
any ideas?

I agree for the most part I build PC's and only recommend them because It brings in money. I personally use a Mac. I agree that PC's give you more bottom level access but 90 percent of what you can do on a PC you can do with MAC. Dont hate on us MAC users!

It's not the fact that he hated on Mac users, it's just the specifics of what he wrote. But we digress.
Once you get onto the boot loader (get to boot loader by simultaneously pressing the power and volume up button) and wait a little bit it should ask for confirmation to update phone. Just press volume up button to confirm and there you sucesfully updated your phone.

I just realized that my phone is no long reading my SD Card, I think after reformatting it, it started with the problems. That might be why it's not picking up the update.
Not I can't put anything on my SD Card when I plug it into my computer, I get a Mac error code -8003. Looks like I ruined my SD Card? Guess I'll pick up a new one, load my back up onto it and just go back to stock.
Why don't you format the card from your phone? That way it will definitely be recognizeable.

That didn't even cross my mind. That worked as easily as you'd expect. I think I'll be restoring it to stock, since I can't figure out the radio thing. With SkyRaider 2.5.2 I tend to have times when 3G just doesn't work at all, and my internet is dead. I'm going to assume that has something to do with the radio upgrade. So I'll just downgrade back to 2.1 and wait it out.
Thanks for all the help guys.
Sorry you had to revert back to stock. Some people claim their radio updates give them better service. Some say less Service... Haha, I have the same service. But anyway, let me know if you wanna try again, skyraider and cm6 are awesome roms, and I'd hate for you to miss out!

If the only thing you did was change the Icons then its not what caused you to lose data..
Changing .png files within apks is probably the most simple mod you can do and I would give it another try. Cause unless you messed with some xml file i doubt its what caused your issues. You can actually edit apks pngs without unzipping or apktooling.
I wish I could explain it -
all I did was take 4g icons from the Epic - rename them to their 3g icon counterparts in CM6 - I opened the apk with 7zip and dragged them from my desktop to the folder
the only snag I hit when doing that was renaming them again inside the apk - because they were being named: random4gimage.png.png because I didnt have windows set to show known extensions - perhaps if I didn't do this it would have worked better? I honestly think that cant be it - but you never know - considering I have never edited an apk before that -
I didn't edit any other files - I didnt 'sign' anything before flashing it considering I dont even know how to sign files -
but I def would love to know what caused me to lose mobile data so I could try it again without thinking I may have to RUU again
This is all probably over my head but, would Metamorph provide some sort of work around for this.
Guys, a .png has no control whatsoever over 3G data you get... it's just like a paranoia effect that's spreading that you lose 3G from this. You won't lol.
If anyone is brave enough to try this. If not I will flash it tomorrow when I get to my Hero.
I accept no responsibility for what happens to your phone.
I have not tested this out as I do not have my Hero with me at this time. Also, this is the first update.zip I have made. I'm not 100% on what I'm doing, I used these instructions here to create the folder structure, and this application here to sign it.
If it works, awesome. If not, I apologize in advance.

- Reboot into recovery
- Make a nandroid backup (or two if you don't trust me - I wouldn't either)
- Flash 4g-icons-heroc_signed.zip
- Reboot

The bootloop could've been caused by a difference in the framework-res.apk files. When you flashed it, the whole framework-res.apk was replaced, and was likely incompatible with the ROM version you were using.

No bootloops or force closes at all. I'm happy to say that I believe this to work and I hope that someone else will try it and post whether or not it works for them as verification!
I just downloaded the smooth sense download to my Evo. I need to move it to my SD card before unzipping it, etc.
I did this before without making sure the download is on my sd card, and I went into a Boot Loop.
I did a reboot and followed all instructions regarding un zipping here >
http://www.goodandevo.net/2010/10/how-to-add-percentage-to-htc-evo-taskbar-battery-icon.html
and then I went into a Boot Loop again. I finally just re flashed the ROM that I backed up before trying the smooth sense zip. All is well but i would like to try agin.
Any help is appreciated.
Oh. I also have ROM Manager installed.
I would like to buy the Premium version to support the Developer But I don't see an option to purchase from the free version app.

Agreed. Does the rom you currently run have an addon to apply a battery % icon?

Thanks for the above info because i was about to go into a Boot Loop
I am using the Stock ROM.
Originally I was going to download the circular battery indicator, until I came across the above.
I may just download the circular indicator, but I was trying avoid battery drain if any with the circular icon, and taking up space up in the task bar.
Which Custom ROM would you guys suggest before I start searching that also.
I was searching 2 hours about the sd transfer issue, but could not find any answers which is why I posted the question here.
Btw, how do I transfer Zip files to the SD card. if the smooth battery Zip was supported by 3.7 would I then have an option to do so?
Thanks
If you asking how to get the file to your phone, I don't mess with usb transfers anymore. I put the file in my dropbox on the pc, then use the dropbox app on my phone to transfer it to the sd card. I keep all my roms, kernals and mods on dropbox. Also, titanium backup now sends my backups there as well. Check it out at http://db.tt/zaSKX4L if you don't already have it.
Dropbox is great for that sort of thing like Phily said. If you want to use usb transfer then connect your phone to your computer with the usb cable. Set your phone to disk drive and it'll appear as a drive under my compter. Then cut/copy + paste the file onto your sd card.
As far as roms go. I use Mikforyo 4.4. Myns 2.2 rls 5 is good as well. Depends on what you want and the look you want. Spend a day or two reading the dev section and checking out roms to find out what you like. My guess is you might end up flashing 2,3 or 4 roms before you find out what you like.

Thanks for the informative and quick info
I will definitely check the Dropbox info out and download it. Also i will look into the diff ROMS available.
For now, I may download the circular battery app until I find a ROM with that as a feature.
I am happy I got out of the Boot Loop though. I got worried for a while.
It was a learning curve, but I got it done.
Edit:
I cannot open up the app after downloading. The circular battery indicator is in apk format.
"Cannot Open File" is displayed ?
i'd just flash a new rom. there are so many fantastic ones out there, based off sense.
there's myn's warm twopointtwo. highly themed to look amazing. very fast and slick. smooth as butter.
there's caulkin's evio 2. very very very fast. very tweaked. very optomized. great rom. also lightly themed to not look as fugly as sense.
also, ava-froyo is nice. very tweaked. this dude knos his java.

Click on it in root explorer. That will usually install apks.
For the apk thing, is it framework-res.apk? This is an exception. It holds all the images and some scripts for android systems, and needs to be installed to a separate partition.

I am not sure but will find out and let you know.
Here is the link, but I may pass due to the taking up of space on my task bar. I'm Rooted so I'll find a ROM as suggested with a percentage in the existing battery icon.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8639993
yep, those files are meant to be placed in the framework-res.apk (or are already in a linked one) you need to push it to /system/framework/ while in recovery mode. i can make you a flashable this weekend if you want.
edit: never mind its just an app, but i can make it replace the battery percent you have now if you want. it'll be the first apk other than the framework-res.apk i have completely decompiled, but i am sure i can do it.

I would appreciate that.
I assume i can always delete it and get the regular battery icon back if I want to.
Plus if I download a custom ROM, it'll probably be included in it, but until then, if you can, I'd appreciate it as I'd like to see how it works.
Thanks for your help
Edit:
I just uploaded the circular battery indicator file .apk file and transferred it to my Evo using Dropbox.
I downloaded the file. Works great!
Thanks for the offer. I much appreciate it :
so if you still want it instead of your battery icon you have now, just send me YOUR framework-res.apk and do you mind linking the file agian? thanks. i'll do it as soon as i have time (weekend)
running Cyanogen and cant seem to move files from the computer to my phone. It doesnt give me a option in the drop down menu just says USB debugging connected but not showing up on computer (although it is charging). Any idea what may be the cause?
I have both now.
Do you mean that you make it so I wouldn't have the stock battery icon, and only have the circular icon?
Optimally, I would like to have the percentage in the stock battery icon (smooth battery) but as explained, that is not supported with 3.7 if I understand that correctly?

I've noticed on here the official T-mobile gingerbread ota update that can be downloaded for the G2. Does one exist for the MT4G yet? I have not rooted or modified my handset yet because I was strictly Blackberry until a few weeks ago & I haven't read enough to feel comfortable altering my phone. I did however, try the G2 update b4 I realized it was for the G2. Needless to say it didn't work! But I figured if one was available for the G2, surely the MT4G should be nearly ready for d/l.

Hey, if you are impatient like me and don't want to wait for the official OTA update to hit your My Touch 4g, you can go to your local T Mobile store as of August the 6th and they can do the update for you via a micro SD card. You need to make sure you back up all your stuff via google and your micro SD card and you will lose all of your apps so write them down so you can re download them. This will completely wipe your phone when it does it. I just did it yesterday and am now rocking GB 2.3.4 on my phone and loving it so far. Battery seems to be a bit better and there's a new radio and my cell reception seems to have improved some. Good luck, I'm like you didn't want to root my phone...I have a rooted Nook and don't mind playing with it but didn't want to chance bricking my only phone.
I thought it would re-install your apps? Or so I've been reading.
Also I called a couple nearby tmo stores, they haven't got the SD card yet.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using Tapatalk
It didn't with mine. Once you log into your google account and go to the market, any apps you have purchased will show up, but all the free ones, you have to re download...or at least I did. As far as them saying they don't have it...
I went to my local store before calling and almost got into an argument with them about the whole thing. Then I finally asked them to look around and see if it was there and they found an envelope and "tada!" there was the SD card with the instructions on how to update. The girl at the store even said "a lot of times our customers know more about what is going on than we do" Are you freaking kidding me!!?? Anyway, it might not be a bad idea to wait until tomorrow to check since that is probably when the managers would be working and maybe they will know to check their mailboxes...

3. Move or Copy the file to the root of the SD card
4. Turn off the phone and remove the battery (unless you have fast boot already off in your phone, then no need to take out battery)
5. Hold down the volume down button while pressing the power button to turn it on
6. A menu will pop up and a few seconds later it will check for a the file you placed on the sd card
7. It will load some stuff on the right hand side of the screen on top.
8.It will say ready to update press something idk remember what it says
9.then it will begin. During process it will shut down once i believe and reboot to same menu and continue.
10. Make sure your phone is good battery. Just to make sure keep it plugged in to wall.
WARNING: This will basically do a factory reset on your phone
BUT: If you have your gmail backed up and everything, every single one of your downloaded apps(paid or free) should be re downloaded once you set up your gmail again on first time setup.
I did this and i am completely happy with with Gingerbread and NO this is not a made up rom this is the stock version.
Hope it helped and if you do this tell me how it went.
PS. Dont keep me responsible if you screw up somehow lol

I did go to my local store today, they had it & I was able to get the update. As far as erasing everything, well all your apps that are installed through the Android market will re- install as long as you have them backed up. There is a setting somewhere that you can choose to automatically reinstall apps. Maybe in "storage & SD card"

I just managed to root my SCH i400 (first ever rooting of any Android device for me).
I am very surprised by how smoothly it went, despite reports & warnings everywhere about complications (like this one - which should be totally ignored if you're using SuperOneClick v2.1.1 or higher).
For the benefit of n00bs like me who may be confused by multiple sources, resources, versions and problem reports, I am posting a step by step procedure that is confirmed (by me, on Windows XP SP3) to be working smoothly, without a single hitch of complications:
Phone: Make sure setting > applications > unknown sources is checked.
Phone: Make sure phone is in debugging mode.
Phone: Make sure SD card is unmounted!
PC: Make sure Windows USB driver for this phone installed and works
PC: Make sure .NET 3.51 SP1 is installed.
PC: Unzip SuperOneClickv2.1.1-ShortFuse.zip ==> C:\Program Files\SuperOneClickv2.1.1-ShortFuse
PC: Double-click SuperOneClick.exe
PC (in SuperOneClick): Make sure you're on the Universal tab (the only other tab is Samsung Captivate, which isn't the i400).
PC (in SuperOneClick): Now click the root button and wait for the process to complete.
PC (in SuperOneClick): "BusyBox not found. Would you like to install it?" Yes!
PC (in SuperOneClick): "Root install has completed! Would you like to run a test?" Yes!
PC (in SuperOneClick): "Your device has been rooted! Would you like to donate now?"
Exit SuperOneClick, unplug phone from USB, power down phone, power on phone. -- this step might not be mandatory, I just did it to be on the safe side.
Enjoy!
Great job on this tut.

Froyo is so nice... Here's how...
Hey guys... new poster here.
Just got a (Gently used) Samsung Continuum for free from Verizon after the power button on my G Droid 1 broke.
Anyways, after rcving it and realizing that it would only support Android 2.1 - I was slightly upset.
My D1 was rooted and modded to the max many times over with just about every ROM you can get.
So after reading up about IMNUTS leaking the Froyo download for the Continuum, my hopes were raised.
It is now debinged, debloated, lightening quick and amazing!
There may not be ROMS out there yet - but I truly hope some of you geniuses decide to make a few.
Just wanted to say thanks and encourage you to do some research before rooting it.
Here's what worked for me.
Odin 1.3
Continuum PIT.pit file
froyo_modem.tar.md5
cwm_recovery_test4_adryn.tar
cyan Clockwork Mod Recovery (BLUE, not yellow) (update.zip file, which is placed on the root of your SD card - renamed to update.zip)
stock_deodexed_ec03.zip (ROM)
(Place all of these files on your Desktop for easy access)
How to do it...
1. Connect your phone to your computer and Mount it.
2. Place the cyan CWM Recovery zip file to your SD card. (rename it to update.zip & do not put it in any folders. Just drag the file to your SD card - whatever drive it is listed as. Mine is my Removeable F
3. Make a new folder on your SD card. Name it whatever you want. (Mine is named "Froyo") Place the stock_deodexed_ec03.zip file in the folder on your SD card.
4. Open Odin 1.3 on your PC.
5. While your phone is off... hold the down volume button and connect it to your computer via USB. The yellow triangle will appear and it will say "Downloading". (Some people say to take the battery out, but my Odin program would not recognize my phone without the battery. Whichever works for you is fine.)
6. In Odin - Click the PIT file button. Load the Continuum.Pit.pit file into the file field. (Just double click it once you find the file from your Desktop.)
7. In Odin - Click the PDA button. Load the froyo_modem.tar.md5 file into the file field. (same as #6. Just double click it once you find the file from your Desktop.)
8. Click Start in Odin.
It should think for a minute, then say resetting, then say PASS
Then your phone will probably turn back on - turn it off again and reconnect it to your PC in download mode as stated in #5 above.
9. In Odin - Click the PDA button again. Load the cwm_recovery_test4_adryn.tar file as you did in #'s 6 and 7 above.
10. Click Start again in Odin... same as before. (thinking, resetting and PASS)
Your phone will turn on again.
11. Disconnect your phone from the computer & turn it off.
12. Hold both Volume buttons and turn it on. It will boot into the Samsung Recovery mode.
13. Use your Volume buttons to go down to highlight "apply update.zip" Then find the place where your normal Menu softkey would be and push it. The phone should then reboot into Clockwork Mod Recovery. It will be orangish.
14. In CWM, use the Volume buttons to highlight Backup/ Restore. Use the Power Button to choose it. Then at the next field, highlight Backup and make a backup.
15. After is makes the backup, press where the softkey Back button should be to go back to the original screen. From there, do a Wipe Data/ Factory reset. Do not forget to do this part.
16. Once it does the Data Wipe - go back to the main menu and and highlight & select the "zip from SD card" choice. Find your "Froyo" folder (of whatever you named it) and apply the stock_deodexed_ec03.zip file.
17. After that, go back to the main menu again and reboot your phone.
It may take a while, but your phone should restart in Froyo.
Of course, you have to re-sign in to your Google network...
Thanks so much guys for all the posts. Without them, is nowhere near as cool.
Hanging at Step #5, Now what?
Thank you for sharing. Wish I could say it went as smoothly for me with my SCH-I400 Continuum... I'm still working on it! I followed recommendations of several different developers/rooters. I've installed .Net Framework 4.0 and the SDK developers kit (who knows, maybe I'll start a new hobby...), and now when I run Superoneclick it hangs at step #5 with this message:
link_image[1728]: 3252 could not load needed library 'libdiskconfig.so' for './zergRush' (load_library[1058]: Library 'libdiskconfig.so' not found)CANNOT LINK EXECUTABLE
I have rebooted the computer and the phone, unmounted the SD card, settings to allow unknown sources, and turned on USB debugging. I'm not sure why the config file can't be found, and I don't know where to get it...
Do I need to reinstall the SDK? Or install the additional Java developers software? Or am I over-complicating this whole thing?
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated...
-James
Perhaps the easiest way is to flash a rooted ROM through Odin (or Heimdall)... Especially if you don't use Windows. This is how I did it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1203597
Two topics in one thread?
Hmmm... seems we have 2 things happening hear. 1: Rooting a Samsung Continuum, and 2: Flashing a ROM...
My concern is the "hang" at step five for Rooting my Continuum SCH-I400... Cant use a ROM until the dang thing is rooted, and can't seem to figure out the hang.
Tried Z4 root from the phone rather than through the PC and it hung indefinitely... Maybe there's a related issue, and I don't care if it's Superoneclick or Z4 that gets the job done.
Has anyone gotten past the same issue?

That's where you are over complicating. You don't actually have to root BEFORE you flash a new rom, if the rom is 'prerooted'. I've never rooted this thing via s1c or z4. I simply flashed the kernels via odin and flashed the rom in cwm.

That's fine Txwolf, but still doesn't address the issue... Or the original reason for this thread - Rooting - which is is essential for the programs I am going to run, and that is what I have been asking about...

The issue seems to be that you just have to use that little search box a little better via xda or your web browser and find more information the root program your trying to use.
When you give up on that you can take txwolf1980 's advice
PS hang on step 5 in OP? Or in 3rd post? That would be getting into dl mode lol

I spent 6 hours last night troubleshooting, researching, digging deep, and "using that little search box." Seems to me You guys need to "just read the thread." It's about rooting your phone, period. If a forum is out there, I've probably read it. I'm using superoneclick to do it. SDK is installed. Net framework is installed. My error message frome SOC is above. When I am finally rooted, THEN I will install several programs - starting with a wifi tether.
I see you have the same phone as I do. Is it rooted with a one-click method? I also tried Z4root and didn't like it.

well i did read the thread...
ive been out of town for a week and finally back on my pc... i would love to help you yet more info is needed.
you are running dl17 stock 2.1 correct?
what OS is your pc running?
and yes i have same phone as you. i have used superone click on ec03 build once.
just for root. but then flashed a deodexed rom to use custom mods and apps.
and since have been flashing rooted kernels, imnuts and adrynalynne have released most all of them.
there are a few ways to root the device, best bet is, as always is go to IRC.
clarity and patience are key, we all got to practice both
I rooted EC09 with soc no problem. If I send someone the EC09 could they extract the apks and send them to me? I deleted some sys apps for the ticker and rss feeds and need them back now to use it.

Unzip factory.rfs of ec09 to grab missing apks and put them on sdcard and install from there.

[*]PC (in SuperOneClick): Make sure you're on the Universal tab (the only other tab is Samsung Captivate, which isn't the i400).

FYI, my Windows Defender threat scanner just reported this SuperOneClickv2.1.1-ShortFuse.zip file as Exploit:AndroidOS/CVE-2011-1823, more specifically pointing at a file named Exploits/GingerBreak in that ZIP file.
I am going to delete this ZIP file as I no longer need it, but I got curious: Any idea what this means?

It means it'll root your phone. Some applications could try to do this without permission and do shady things with your phone. Nothing to worry about if your doing it on purpose.
