Tmobile throttling...nope - G2 and Desire Z General

Just destroyed my 5 gig limit, currently at 11.56gbs and still hitting 9-10 mpbs down/ 1.5-2.1 mpbs up. What's up I keep hearing about people being throttled and yet I passed my limit without any consequences. Currently on stock gingerbread 2.3.4.

I've gone over 5GB a few times before and not been throttled either. It seems they only throttle if you consistently go over 5GB. But I think that you'll find more people who get throttled than not.

you'd need to connect to your computer and use the SDK to take screen shots without root.

Heck if you don't want to take a screenshot by connecting to your PC just take a picture...wait, do people still use cameras?

I heard tmobile was planning on charging overage charges instead of throttling now? I remember seeing something on engadget about some changes.

I thought that was just for the 200 mb plan. They advertise "unlimited data" too much to just get rid of it.

Yes, they're only going to start charging overages on 200mb plans, which aren't even for smartphones anyways. I think they're trying to crack down on people with smartphones who get in on the 200mb plan then just deal with the EDGE-like speeds because they save a lot of money with it.
There's a cap on how much they can charge you on overages too, I think it caps at $30 from what I've heard.

wth I got throttled! after going 41 MB over 2GB limit -.- I used to get 7-9 Mbps on downloads. now I get 0.05 Mbps. Its almost unusable!

If you have a grandfathered 10GB or 5GB plan, you're much less likely to get throttled unless you consistently go over 5GB.
New, 2GB plans are explicitly worded to be throttled at exactly 2GB.

I'm on the old 10gb plan and wasnt throttled for my last 3 billing cycles where I went over 5gb.
However I was on rooted 2.2 froyo then updated to rooted rom gingerbread 2.3.4 and now Im throttled to damn dialup. It was good while it lasted.

Yeah they got me the day before my billing cycle started over! Lol It actually wasnt that bad but i dont suggest any downloads. I did alot of downloading last month.

Last billing cycle, they didn't throttle me. I got up to 9gb of data.
Now I'm capped at 57kbps till the end of my cycle. It ****ing sucks.

I've been in the same position. Yes, it does suck, 'specially when you're going SLOWER than dial-up.
And 57kbps? When I got throttled, I only got 8kbps.
That's T-Mobile's way of saying F*CK YOU.

Their capping is terrible. Atleast give us a 1Mb instead of just giving us dial up speeds. Lol.

Its not a cap. Its a throttle. And would you rather have a 5GB throttle or a 2GB cap with overages? Because those are your 2 options, and if I were you I wouldn't complain too much about having a throttle. Believe it or not, unlimited data is pretty much done for in the US.

5gb cap true or not?

Okay so ive read topics where tmobile will slow down your speed if you go above 5gb in data usage. Well i went above that (im at 5.3gb) 2 nights ago and its only my 2nd week into my billing cycle. This is because i tether my xbox to play live, i give people wifi for their laptops etc. So my question is, do they really slow you down? My speeds are H connections and havent slowed down at all. And why give people phones and they pay for unlimited data only to have it slowed down if they exceed an x amount and have them pay an EXTRA $15 for an added tether feature?

when you get throttled down, you'll know it. every time i hit 5 gigs, i get slowed down. it's been happening to me ever since the nexus one. i haven't heard of the 10 gig thing, but the 5 did happen to me. when it did happen on the nexus one for me, it would still show 3g. but i'll get edge speed only, and it's a pain. but you can surf regular web stuff just fine. it's the videos that'll kill ya. i haven't hit 5 gigs on the g2 yet and not planning to. but hey, at least they throttle you down instead of charging you extra per mb.
I think it has begun. A couple days ago I received a text from tmo saying my speeds would be slowed through the remainder of the billing cycle. I have always been a heavy user and used to tether my Nexus every night at work. I am only at about 6Gbs this billing cycle so I hardly think it is excessive. I hit 14Gbs a couple months ago and never got this message.

Tmobile

So apparently not only does tmobile reduce speed when you go ever your max speed they charge you $1.99 per MB i think or i dont remmber but wth? when did that change? a couple of months ago i went over my 2GB and all i got was slow internet, now they actually charged me. any1 else know about this?
This change was only supposed to affect people who began new contracts/even more plans after that date in august or whenever. I called to confirm and it should not affect you if you began your contract earlier, it should only throttle your speed as you said. I would call customer service to get it cleared up.
They shouldn't charge you per MB on any 2GB smartphone plan. Only throttling applies AFAIK.
Per MB charges should be on dumbphone plans and plans like the 500mb/month allotment.
Well originally my plan was the unlimited and I changed it to the 2GB and when I called tmobile they said they charge by the MB.

This sounds right, but I wasn't aware that T-mobile had a capped 2GB plan? That would have a lot of confusion with the "Unlimited" plans that just slow down at 2GB.

Sprint is already going to start capping WiFi tethering plans to 5GB, and has said that throttling connections in the future is not off the table.
It'll happen eventually. Probably after they get flooded with customers when the iPhone comes to their network. Happened to AT&T and Verizon.

Sprint to delay 4G LTE, what a shock!

http://www.pcworld.com/article/245561/sprint_delays_4g_lte_rollout.html
The good news, if one can take seriously any statements coming from Overland Park, KS., is that Sprint will support 4G through 2015. This, of course, like the terms of our contracts, is subject to change at any time for any reason. I guess the $1.5 billion "Investment" in Clear, anticipated legal fees and class-action payouts in light of the C.I.Q. melt-down, and not-to-be-realized data mining profits have taken their toll.
Have you forgotten some old proverbs:
Honesty is the best policy
Cheaters never prosper
The cover-up is worse than the crime
How about trying a new one,
Our customers can handle the truth.
End of rant.

No, its just how much data you can pull in chunks. Whether you download a 100mb file at 500kb/s or 25Mb/s , its the same amount of data, you'll just get it faster at 25Mb/s.

Sprints data is unlimited. Verizon and att have a capped plan. You get x amount of data for x amount of money. If you go over you pay. I like sprint. I live in a rural are and roam off a verizon tower. I still dont hit the data roaming limit and only the voice roaming limit once. And i have 9 lines on two plans.

Yes but our unlimited data means nothing if you can't get any data to begin with I love sprints plan but hate their service right now its unfortunate since I'm generally happy except for my data speeds

I get sweet speeds on WiMax and good speeds on 3G. I'm sticking with Sprint since I routinely use more than 5GB of data each month. Every month a bit more. Soon I'll be over 6GB/mo.
Although, all bets are off if they don't get the Galaxy Nexus by Feb.

Wait until there is network congestion and lets see the speeds then. Currently in Indianapolis I have way better 3G speeds then version does and no caps and 4G though not official as it's still under Clear but it's 11Mb down all day..
When Sprint launched 4G in St. Louis and Chicago the speeds were a lot faster then they are now that there is more users on the network. Also faster the speed the faster you will hit their cap and the faster you will be complaining because you have to pay the overages.
$30 a month for 2GB vs. $10 a month for unlimited. The numbers don't lie but like the old saying goes a fool and his money are soon parted.
I've used different radios and all that I'm by no means a noob my friend don't get me wrong if I could I would stay but unfortunately I'm at my best 1mbps and I only get that late at night during the day when I'm up 200k at best its maddening

Not happening. T-Mobile wised up to the APN mod, and now, even after changing the APN, you're still throttled if you go over your limit.

So, instead of looking for a way to circumvent the agreement you made, which TMO is holding up on their end, why not be more careful with what you have and maybe even upgrade your plan? Just saying.

So I've searched and can't find the thread about being throttled and what some people have changed their apn settings to. I am being throttled and want to try some of them, this super slow connection is making me frustrated and my phone useless. I download tops 60Kb. Wtf :x

I'm hitting 75kbs... oh yeah, you're jealous.. But yeah, first time I ever got throttled and it happened after 5 days but yeah, I'm too cheap for faster than 2GB

Agreed with various points that you touched on. However, I believe that T-Mobile "abuses" (for lack of a better word) of their throttling system. I get that after 2, 5 or even 10 GB of data T-Mobile reserves the right to limit the bandwidth throughput of specific users but to cap speeds at speeds slower than dial-up is just pathetic.

Some of us don't have that luxury because of one of two reasons or both:
A) High-speed internet is not available in the area
B) High-speed internet is rather inaccessible (economic-wise)

I agree that the speed at which TMO drops it's users to is quite horrific however, you do agree to the terms. That said, I'm seeing posts stating speeds around 70kbps. That would be a blazing 14kbps faster than dial-up. Where's the problem?

I used to have the 5gig plan but decided to switch to the 2 gig to save a bit of cash but apparently I use allot more data then I thought. And also I do connect to wifi when I'm at home.
Yea I agree to that TMobile is slowing down the data after the cap way too low. It basically almost makes my phone useless and they should atleast give us a bit more bandwidth.
5gb. I've used 4.15 and my bills do on the 9th. I've never been throttled and from the looks of it I don't ever wanna be.

Guys you are pretty naive if you think Tmo would increase the data throttle speed. It's to get you to upgrade to more data.

And that's why soon enough am going to cancel my data plan with them and go straight with wifi.. going to get me a portable mobile hotspot connect.. something I can put in my pocket and use...data plan is not tied to contract..

i must have doing a great job managing my data lately then, because around january/february i was catching pure hell with going over my 5GB data limit then i remembered about the apn trick started using that and didnt have any more problems going over my limit since then *Shrugs*
Turn off data when not using it. Disable auto sync. If on ICS rom, check the data monitor.
2GB should be enough, just have to manage it better

Its not so cut and dry. . I get throttled at the end of my cycle every month. I exceed my 5 gig and it happens. That's not the problem. The problem is it makes your data unusable. So slow that nothing works and that is B.S.
Unless this doesn't work anymore, you can at least switch it to EDGE so that you can get at least that once you are throttled.
