Welcome to WP7 community.
Here are your answers:
1. No, you can't use themes and launchers. However, Metro UI should be enough and you can customize the tiles (add/delete/move, even use live tiles).
2. There is no equalizer in music player
3. Yes
4. Yes, but you do need the phone to be SIM unlocked and have a valid/active SIM in (any network)

for #4, you also need to make sure the focus' 3g bands are the same as the ones for the provider you want to use it on, for example, while the focus will work on the USA tmobile network, it won't get 3g service on it, only edge.

Make sure you install the Network Profile app from Samsung to change carrier settings. Suggested (if you jailbreak) to install Samsung Tools

1. Speaker is decent. I would say medium, does the job. Doesn't wake up the neighbours if that's what you're looking for A quote that might interest you, with which I agree mostly(from here):
Call Quality
The call quality on the Focus was, to say the least, impressive. When using a headset, if no one talked, the line was completely silent. No buzzing, no background noise. Silent. The Focus appears to handle some form of noise cancellation, as tapping the bottom of the device can be heard in the earpiece while in a call. Whatever it does, it works, and the result is extremely impressive.
Last, but not least: The sound
The external speakers on the Focus are loud, which is good. Unfortunately, when hitting high volumes, the sound quality tends to muffle a little, and good luck getting any bass out of the mono speaker. To be fair, however, the Focus sounds pretty much like every other smartphone without headphones in. On the plus side, it has the Music+Video hub, making listening to music fun.
2. Cards work well as long as these are Class 2 or 4. There's a thread here about working cards.
3. Not really. I sincerely doubt another music app will appear soon and maybe, just maybe, in Mango, the player has this.

thank you very much

Are you happy with the PPCPE dailer?

Having had my XDA 2 now for a few weeks, and having finally worked out most of the kinks of the really inadequate bluetooth stack (by installing the widcomm stack) I am now moved to address my other annoyances: the very feature poor phone software.
I expected a very configurable phone, but was very disappointed with the microsoft dailer. The short list of features I find missing are:
No separate ring tones can be assigned to each contact. This could be very usefully, as you would know who is phoning without checking the screen.
No software to keep track of your calls or GPRS allowance. Even my old nokia from 3 years ago could do that.
No way to transfer a call from the handset to a headset. I know you can do it the other way around, why not this way too?
Very little status information on the dailer screen. Why is this, when most cell phone screens look like the status display on a jet?
Anyways, there is alot more, and people may want to add their annoyances. Im really wondering if there is any software that can replace the microsoft Dailer (like Pocketinformant replaces the pocket outlook).
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Surur
Took me a minute to know what you're talking about.
No, I hate the built-in dialer on the Pocket PC.
The author of mobidial (http://www.mobidial.com) told me there will be an XDA II version.. hopefully soon.
-arebelspy
hey,
just a few comments....
re: No separate ring tones can be assigned to each contact
- i beleive the o2 xda site has free software for download; one of which is called powercontacts. i believe it allows you to assign a ringtone to each contact. i tried it when i still had the xda1...never got it to work. so, i downloaded a trial version of ringtonex; it works like a charm and i'm able to assign individual ringtones to any contact i want. i immediately bought the software, i think it was for around 9usd. now that i'm using the xda2; the software still works great. for ringtones what i did was record the voice of my friends, officemates, my wife, and used those wav files for ringtones corresponding to their contacts. it also works in tandem with the photocontacts app in the xda2
re: No way to transfer a call from the handset to a headset
-the xda2 has bluetooth and i use it together with the bt200 headset. incoming and outgoing calls are automatically transferred to the headset.
2 cents worth.
cheers mate
robson
Transferring from phone to headset is a headset dependent thing. My HBH-65 allows me to transfer to phone and back to headset, but my Jabra wouldn't have.
Thx for the great pointers. I am definitely getting the RingtoneX app, and mobidail or something similar, when it comes out.
I just wish that developers would design more for handed use, not using a stylus, especially as bluetooth voicedailing does not work.
About transferring to a headset, I mean after you pick up a call with the XDA, transferring the call to a headset should be possible, but has not worked for me yet.
Another minor peeve, why is the sms option not on the dialler, but on the menu bar, and why is speaker phone also not on the front, but you have to press a key for it. There still needs to be alot of improvement. Hopefully independent programmers will kick in and fix all these deficiencies. It does make you wonder if the developers actually use their own devices or not...

i think it's because that most cell phones screens is their version of the today screen
i most surdenly would not wish such a confusing cluttet messy interface on my worst enemy
(yeah of cause not all cellphones are all that bad some many are)
I dont know. At least they should have the battery status on the screen, and the network logo would not be ammis either (currently its difficult to know when you have no reception, or just no reception)
Alot of the stuff thats currently in the task bar could also be bigger icons on the dailer, and it would also make it look less plain and just incomplete, as if its been thrown together at the last minute.
Surur
well not sure if it's much help but if you install some bar like advanced wisbar on your pda you'll have batt status in the bar both in today and the dialer
suppose this is a pre customised vs. free 3. party customising
some people like to set up their device with personal customising and some people want the place they buy it to handle that
in that way i suppose xda and other such devices are more like computers then std phones are
of cause if one get a xda with all the stuff in the preloaded provider rom they get more of that stuff you want
of cause thats not saying that they get enough
Ive been a user of Icbar for a long time, but as notifications is so important on a PPCPE device, and its not supported, I am not able to use it anymore. This is unfortuanate, as I enjoyed knowing what my battary status is all the time.

If you want to use your finger to dial contacts try Fingerclix by imaginet software. I used it on my Samsung I700 and now my I-Mate and it works just fine.

This is brilliant. It would be even better if it could use the phone key insteadof loosing my contacts button. Any idea how to do htis.
Thx

Voice changer and Voice effect

Hello Friends
I saw an aplication a phone ( made in china with dual sim )
First aplication can change the voice when incoming/outgoing call.
( Robotic , Man , Woman )
Second is can add the voice affect in speaking.
( Ex: In incoming/outgoing call you can add a disco music affect or a
motorbike or etc. )
Do you know kind a program for WM? I use WM6.1
Thank you
That would be awesome if we had that
I haven't tried it out, but I think this is the software that you are talking about:

Nope.
Look:
* NOTE: Voice Twister is not designed to use during a phone call and cannot morph your voice within a phone call.

Yes.
This app must use in during call
Thank you insertwittyusernamehere and dwizzy130 for interest.
I am going on search.
I have a special hands-free device that distorts your voice. Its just for fun.
As far as I know theres only that hardware way to change your voice on-the-fly.
All other softwares cause a delay to change the voice. I tested one for the PC (that has a much powerfull processor, when compared to our phones) once, that only caused a 2 second delay. But it always causes the delay.

If the delay is anything at all like in Voice Twister (as referenced above: http://www.screamingbee.com/product/VoiceTwister.aspx ), then I will take it.
For example, using the alien voice results in a noticeable delay of 2 seconds or so as you suggested, but using the Squirrel or Giant voice, the delay is nominal, like half a second, if even that.
I still can't believe no one here has figured out how to make this feature work.
I know we have plenty of talented people here, and Im sure one of them will eventually figure it out.
And hey, if that solution ends up inducing a half-second delay, I'll take it.
Something is better than nothing.
Yes I think so
This website is very good and merge helpful people.
If some body produce like this program this will e very funny
Voice Twister is a great app, but just seems so limited.. If you guys could make a improved program I would donate.. Something like SonicVox for winmo would be cool too. Thanks alot everyone on this site for all there hard work.
T-Pain has an autotune app?
Well aparently on the iphone. Check this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDGJY2LgwWI
How cool would this be on a winmo device? You can sound like all the current rap and R&B stars or get back that funk by sounding like Roger & Zapp. Great voice manipulator' would love to see a winmo version/ better version..
This would be an awesome app for our WM devices
yeah it would be a nice application if someone can made it

Queries of a Newbie!

Am new to Windows Mobile and would really appreciate if someone could answer atleast some of my doubts.
1) The speakers ... is that the loudest we can go? I have a P1i that I tweaked thanks to Swmail and its like real loud!
2) Most decent Nokia have a feature that when a call is received "speaks out" the caller name from the address book. Do we have a similar option in Xperia/ Windows Mobile?
3) When I receive a call, the callers name is almost invisible ... I mean its so small that a person like me having below average vision has trouble figuring out the caller's name! Is there no in built tweak to rectify this problem?
4) I have downloaded and installed the MyLostBlog HTC Calculator.cab ... why are all the backgrounds black for most softwares around here??? Is it not possible to adjust colours to go with the theme? I mean, can I just not install any software and the theme gives the software the looks?
Having got the Xperia, I'm now in a stage where I have to learn the OS fresh ... feels uncomfortable with all the small fonts and buttons. I'm now wondering if this was a mistake and if I should give up so soon or work my way into comfort zone!
Your advises and help will help me hang on!
Cheers!
1 - I'm sorry, but this was a mistake by SE. The speaker is awful, but there is nothing you can do about it. I wish we had stereo speakers on par with the N95 too. When I use it for video or audio, I always put my headphones. I don't see a problem about it. The only irritating thing is that you won't be able to hear the ringtome, but that is what vibration is for right?
2 - There are many programs that do this. I haven't tested them, because I find the feature annoying. Do it on your own risk:
Voice Call
Phone Tray Free
Ascendis Caller ID
Audio Caller ID
and many more. Just use google .
3 - You need a program like SPB Phone Suit or PhoneEx 1.3 (the one I'm using). PhoneEx is great. Big names and numbers. It is very finger friendly.
4 - Because black = cool. After all everyone wants to be Mr. Black (10 points to whoever caught the reference ). Anyways, HTC devices are black and the Xperia most people have is black, so people make programs with black fonts.
And no, the theme cannot change the colours of the programs that you install.
You say that you are a new WinMo user. Well, that means that you have to read and learn a lot of things. No way around that. WinMo is not intuitive. It is not like most of the smartphones or featurephones with their flashy, but often useless oparating systems. It is annoying at the beggining, but when you learn how it works and get the little quirks here and there, it will become the best operating system for ppc's.
Plus, there are literally countless number of applications for WinMo and a lot of them are free.
Xperia has great touchscreen that allows you to click even the little icons with ease. If it is not responsive, you should change the settings for the screen sensitivity. Start>Settings>Screen or use this method, but be careful what you do and read the instructions carefully:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=485037&highlight=screen+sensitivity
It really depends on what kind of phone you want. Xperia is perfect for me and as I have said before, I cannot imagine my life without it. If you want to have a pocket pc with you and if you are preapred to spend many hours reainstalling, hard-reseting and tweaking, then you have made the right choice.
A piece of advice I give to every newcomer:
Read the topics in this forum. Just open random topics and learn about your device. Use the search functions. 99% of all your question have been answered in other threads.
I had some experience with WinMo when I bought the X1, but I wasn't very good. Now, I have full control over every aspect of my device. It has integrated itself in my way of life. All thanks to this forum...
I don't want to promote myself in any way, but check this thread out. I have put some random thoughts concerning the X1 there :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=506512
Cheers
For bigger incoming call notification you can also use a few other options:
-S2U2 has slide to answer support
-the touch HD caller also offers full screen caller ID
-resco (don`t know for sure)

You can make it louder, but the SOUND QUALITY will not change. There is no bass and the high frequencies sound awful. The speaker is tiny and of bad quality. You had to turn it down, because the sound was unpleasant. Am I right?
I installed optxperia, too, and am very happy that I can hear my phone ringing better. The sound is somewhat distorted due to the limited speaker quality, so I turned it down. I am enjoying having good volume for games, alarms, and calls, though!
I don't need great speakers on a phone, because they are never going to equal the sound quality of good headphones, anyway. I always listen to music with really good headphones for a better listening experience, as I'm picky about sound quality.
i also help big problem looking at the caller id for incoming calls. stressing my eyes to do it. which application is better? where can i download PhoneEx 1.3?
thanks
Thanks orelsi for your detailed explanations ... it is really appreciated
A couple of googles later and I've got the Phonex 1.3.5 with which I am very happy now! Loyjwe ... if you are googling it, be sure to get the one for WM6.
@orelsi you mentioned a couple of programs such as Voice Call, Phone Tray Free, Ascendis Caller ID, Audio Caller ID. Do these work with windows mobile? I searched, but I go the general feeling that they were all for the regular windows.
As regards "black" ... yeah I guess I got myself the 10 points ... anyways, I'm a person that loves the colour blue and feel uncomfortable with black ... get a kind of "black is unlucky" feel! I'm certain I saw a link somewhere where I can set backgrounds everywhere to a picture I like ... guess I'll search for it!
@Shadowdh ... thank you for the OPTXperiabeta02.cab suggestion. Just got hold of it and will see if I'm happy with it
Generally .. a nice start! I guess I'll have more queries as I go along .., guess I really have to get used to WinMo

You can change the backgrounds in the menus of WinMo (the general theme), but I don't think you can change the colours of diff programs. That is what you wanted right?
I'm sorry abut the apps. I said that I never tested any of them. I just googled them . I asked around a little bit and here is what I got .
Try these:
Mobile Speak - (this one is for blind people, but maybe it can be set to say only callers' names and nothing else)
MS Voice Commander has such an option.
HollerID

Seriously, if u hate the tiny fonts and un-user friendly UI on the X1, read up and flash a custom ROM.
Like "dumbphones", the ROM/firmware in WinMo phones can be upgraded. The biggest advantage / benefit of WinMo over any of the other "smartphone" OS's around is that there are loads of ppl who are willing to setup and build customised firmwares so u get the benefits and features of other (HTC!) phones....
Read up on "HardSPL" in the Custom ROMs section and give it a go - if u do it right there's no way u'll brick your phone and it'll come out the otherside like a brand new (completely different + better!) phone...

Yes we are indeed mate... I did not have to turn it down due to rubbish quality rather it was very very loud... like another poster mentioned I tend to use earphones for listening to podcasts (rather than music) and when I play video its usually pretty decent if through the speakers... sure its not dolby etc but hey its such a little bitty speaker...

>>>Experienced HD2 users are most welcome!<<<

Hey guys!
I am thinking of buying an HD2 and sell my N96; I know that some of my questions or maybe all are already somewhere but i guess not that they are in the same post; so here i go:
1---Can the sms be stored on MMC?
2---If the sms are on SIM/MMC/Phone; can they be copied/moved from one of these locations to another?
3---Can you create custom folders in sms? (you create a custom one and you move some sms to this folder) (i know HTCsms doesn't allow but I’ve read that default winmo messaging allows it, I’ve also read that HTCsms can be disabled but till now i didn't knew how to do all that!!!)
4---Does it really take a decade to load msgs? (in case you have hundreds of thousands) (what's the solution if yes please)
5---Does winmo have the "mark/unmark/mark all" option? (if you have to deal with a lot of files/sms/pics...??
6---Can you store the pics/videos taken on MMC?
7---Can these pics/videos be simply manipulated by Albums/categories...?
8---Can the contacts be copied/moved from SIM to phone memory and to MMC?
9---How many zoom X does the camera support? I know it's not so beautiful compared to Carl zeis's lenses of nokia, but can they be acceptable or practical?
10---What about the loudspeaker? Does it have acceptable quality?
11--- Internet and WIFI reception; are they good?
12---Radio reception, is it good?
13-User profiles (silent, meeting...) can they be timed for instance? (e.g. meeting profile timed to end automatically on 5 PM when i finish work)
14---Synch with pc and transferring data (any kind of data) with PC; is it good?
Finally some subjective questions that i care to know their answers:
A-If you want to compare messaging between Symbian (n96) to the one in Winmo6.5 (HD2) in terms of options available, details seen, customizability, moving/copying, loading speed, memory capacity... which one do you find better?
B-If you want to compare calling functions between Symbian (n96) to the one in Winmo6.5 (HD2) in terms of options available, details seen in log, customizability, call sound quality... which one do you find better?
C-Finally, did anyone of you guys bought an HD2 and dropped a Nokia N96 (or any N series) and regret it in the end?
What can you suggest me? (i wish i can try an HD2 for a long time but i can't)
Do i go for it? Or it's not worth it?
Thank you guys in advance

Depends on the quality of the signal and the distance to the aerial, and how far down in the priority list your account is with the provider. But, I've never dropped below 3 bars Edge, usually sat between 3 and 4 bars HSDPA, and wifi through access points is easily fast enough to be perfectly useable.

Not out of the box, but there are programs to allow this.

Its pretty good, better than my E90 was, and it doesn't have to be rebooted to get the Memory card back!
Finally some subjective questions that i care to know their answers:
A -If you want to compare messaging between Symbian (n96) to the one in Winmo6.5 (HD2) in terms of options available, details seen, customizability, moving/copying, loading speed, memory capacity... which one do you find better?

The HD2s messaging is pretty simple, but I find it easier to send MMSs inc. videos and photos compared to my E90. In terms of SMS arranging, you have 2 options, per message viewing and conversqtion mode. other than that, no other functions out of the box.
B-If you want to compare calling functions between Symbian (n96) to the one in Winmo6.5 (HD2) in terms of options available, details seen in log, customizability, call sound quality... which one do you find better?

The call log is better on the HD2 in my view, you can select a different number for a contact to the one they rang you on, great if they switch their mobile off!
Never had any issues with call quality, always been crystal clear.
I like the HD2s idea of having all the options on one screens (like loudspeaker, keypad etc) than in a menu.
C-Finally, did anyone of you guys bought an HD2 and dropped a Nokia N96 (or any N series) and regret it in the end?

Check my sig for the phones I've had, I've not regretted it at all. The HD2 has its faults, but it is such a powerful device, its expected to have quirks. My E90 had issues, it comes with the smartphone territory.
What can you suggest me? (i wish i can try an HD2 for a long time but i can't)
Do i go for it? Or it's not worth it?
Thank you guys in advance

To be honest, that choice is up to you. I've personally not looked back, but you may miss features between them.
Thanks man you're great!
You seem a Windows mobile fan! Are you??
Man, googling the net for windows mobile isn't encouraging; they place it as the worst OS including (RIM, iphone's, symbian, android, maemo...); do you think this is true?? Is it that bad?!? I will be glad to hear (or read ) your opinion! I had enough from reviews; i want to see real experience with this thing!
I really like to buy the HD2 but this OS thing makes me nervous!
Any other feedback is well welcomed too!
I like Windows Mobile for what it *can* do, not necessarily what it does do, if that makes sense?
I like symbian, probably on the basis that it is a logical, easy to use menu layout, i.e. if I want to access a GPS program, I open the main menu and press the GPS folder. If I want further options, I open the menu options.
In this respect, WinMo is very similar (you can arrange your start menu how you want it, even with the added option of changing icons etc).
Comparing this to the iPhone for instance (as every review seems to anyway), you open the main menu, then have to trawl through the pages of icons to find the app you want. Granted, you can move the icons around, but as far as I know, you need a PC or Mac and iTunes to do this (not sure if they've fixed this in OS4, I lost interest at 3G)
I have my HD2 doing an awful lot, set up as a wireless router for my laptop, playing games, internet browsing (I was blown away with the 800 x 332 res on the E90, but the HD2 is on the next rung or two up!), emails (have it checking 4 pop3 accounts, 1 imap and one exchange account, all at different intervals and automatically stopped at night), full GPS Sat-Nav and all the rest of the features I can reel off.
I find it incredibly stable (before anyone flames, the iPhone and E90 do need reboots now and again ) and very functional.
Yes WinMo is a bit creaky these days, but a lot of people forget it was designed to be a PDA with almost desktop features rather than a phone with PIM, and was designed in the late 90s, before Apple were even designing pretty Macs, Nokia had just released phone with polyphonic ringtones, and Palm was on its knees. None of them had such a complex functionality, and few even come close more than a decade later.
Android is getting there, but not quite, and RIM, good god, who designs a touch friendly interface for a non-touch phone? Did they not realise they made it even harder to navigate using their pearl?
My son had both the N95,N96 and now XM5800 in no way you can compare those Nokias to HD2 at least from my perspective. If you like to do customization you may never regret for getting this phone,at least I didnt. The only downside i found is the limited internal storge but I usually make sure to install my apps on the SC(MMC).
Most of the applications are a bit old but very professional,I like them much better than the Iphone which I owned over a period of 3 years.
However you seem to live in Lebanon as I also do,I live in Dowra suberebean area.I dont know if somehow I can be any help to you.
good Luck
Thank you rp-x1 you are a good man!
I think i will buy it after all; i will try it for some months or maybe years and will sell it if i didn't like it! I have nothing to loose (except couple of hundreds of dollars! )
Yes hagba i live in lebanon and you are Armenian as i see
I live in Jounieh and i work in Sin elfil so i'm not so far from you!
I will be so glad if you give me your mail address or even your phone number (in my work i can call freely so don't worry) (you can send me a private msg) or if you don't want; it's enough for me if you can tell me what are the "good"s and the "bad"s of this phone in your practical experience (not as in reviews when they mention for example that 64K colors are a downside of this phone! What do i care man?!? Am i counting them?!? )
Thanks a lot
im afraid I dont have time for a lengthy answer so ill keep it simple......
I came from an n95 and I dont miss it at all, maybe the camera a little if im honest.....
and winmo is not the worst os... in my opinion....
From all your question, one fundamental aspect is that 'can you customize your ROM?' I believe WinMo is the most customizable. Look at the HD2 ROM development thread. You can't ever do such things in iPhone or others.
Hey Life I PM-ed you my email.

[Q] Better Sound on W.M.+ REQ. for .dll

How can I improve the audio of my device?
1---The volume is very poor and the quality is very bad.
2---Is there a patch or a sound driver?
3---Is there a software or an equalizer that can help me?
4---Android have "5.1" option for the surround, why it doesn't exist on W.M.?
5---Can anyone upload "Wavedev.dll" or "Waveapi.dll" files? (They are in the "Windows" folder)
6---Where can I download loud ringtones?
Thanks
I tryed the equalizer of CorePlayer but it's not good...

You should ask Microsoft this question.
Thanks, I found also others app like WOWHD but I don't remeber the name...
and if someone want to develop something for the sound and for the "5.1"...
Another question:
7---My device has 2 speakers for the audio: a Front one for the Telephone and a Back one for the System.
Is there a way to reproduce the audio of my video and my songs from the Front Speaker (that usually is used for calls) and not from the Back speaker?

Why on earth do you need 5.1 surround playback on your mobile device?
Does your device have a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor - the only one I know of that brings the 5.1 surround sound theatre experience to mobile devices? Watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=GZBs7XoJvMI
Anyways, Windows Mobile is a dead OS and I'm afraid NOONE of the developers here will be willing to make efforts in writing a new "wavedev" driver for Windows Mobile ...

Did a quick Google-search and immediately found a solution for HTC:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/windows-mobile-software/60239-audio-router-switching-speakers.html
Probably for other devices also a solution exist. GIYF ...
I know W.M. is an old O.S. but for me it will be forever the best
I can found anything I want (the article on PPCgeeks that is just what I was looking for)
You didn't understand me, Surround playback can used with headphones (also worst Android phone do it)
If anyone can answer my other questions in the 1st post ...

Here you go: http://www.findthatzipfile.com/search-44343300-hZIP/winrar-winzip-download-dumprombm.zip.htm
I use Kevintm_V4_puff601Regs_AudioPara3_LOUDEST.cab to boost the volume. Not the best for the phone and distorts sound sometimes... but I can hear it and I don't mind distortion.
Thanks eyeb, I will try it
