My wife has my old galaxy s with no data plan, I on the other hand do, when we're together I start my portable wifi hot spot, and hey presto she has internet connection !, I assume this is perfectly legal ?

Yup as long as you are willing to pay for it.
So do you have too pay for data accessed via tethering ?

Depends on your plan. If you, have the standard plan then once you go over your limit and if att catches you they will force you to get a teathering plan.
On the other hand I'm on a cheapest dumphone plan and run my SGS2 off my old Evo Sprint Wimax hotspot. Fast fast fast! No data accumulated on Att.
Isn't the WiFi tethering only available with your 3G?
Can you connect to WiFi on your phone and tether it to some other phone?
Sure.....s'what I been doing. Running my Samsung sg2 on sprints Wimax. No way I can live with ATT speeds. To gooda phone far that.
The pending Att GS2 will of course access a little better speeds on Att but I'll be hopefully back to Sprint using the Within... Or...Possibly T-Mobile Samsung Hercules. This all of course only til the Nexus Prime breaks lol!

No you're connecting with data (3G) and tethering it on.
I mean, can the phone connect to a WiFi network, then make a WiFi hotspot and let other phones connect to that? I think not.

I know I'm missing something here!... But my samsung is using wifi, (with network off) and connected to Spring Wimax...often with ITS data off.
I still make and receive calls on the Samsung.
So your phone becomes a hotspot or is an ad hoc connection to only one device?

Yeah gottcha. Same on the Evo. When Hotspotting (to my Samsung), the wifi is disengaged. Yes.
Yeh I have a 500MB data plan, and understand I'd get charged if I go over. Is great for my wife to get internet access when we're out and about without having to pay for her own data plan .
You can only create a portable hot spot with wi-fi turned off, so internet connection is only via mobile data 3G etc.. so the tethered device/s (upto 8 devices at any one time) can only access mobile data.

Reboot. Turn off your Wifi first, then enable wifi hotspot tethering.
I tried that and it didn't work.
I don't have data connection but I tried to turn it on and it worked fine.
Hmmmm. Looks like i need to pay 15$ extra to get the service enabled on Tmobile. Strange how i never had to do that with my Nexus One.

One of the things advertised with the NS is no charge for wifi teathering. I think they only require a fee on the 4g devices.

That's why I asked the OP if he/she had an old cheap data plan. You have to have a current data plan.
Can they detect if you have an old plan? Yes. Can they detect if you're using the tethering/hotspot feature? Probably. Can they detect how much bandwidth you're using? Definately.
Must have an Android plan. Some got away with using a lesser plan but not all apps work. Visual voicemail etc....

[Q] Wifi problem?
I unlocked and rooted today and thought everything was fine. However, after the phone was factory reset, all of my apps didn't auto update like before after signings in and Im having a wierd wifi issue.
I can connect to access points but now I can't actually use wifi. The 2 or 3g sign will still be on. Even if I have full bars on wifi I can't use wifi. I went into recovery and fixed permissions and the problem still persists. I have no idea how to fix it short of a factory reset. Could rooting have anything to do with it?

I've seen the Mobile network problem but this is different . My WiFi signal sits in white and not green until I manually forget network and re apply the SSID.
Worked perfect before update , would walk into my home and it would pick up and connect .
Anyone else having this problem or no of a cure ?

I've had problems with three different handsets (iPhone 3G, Vibrant, Nexus) on different Wi-Fi routers. Believe it or not, what usually fixes the problem is updating the router to it's latest available firmware. I haven't kept up with all of the varieties of WPA2 or 802.11N, but it's helped me...
cheers , I was looking at a new router after Xmas . Thing is it worked flawlessly before the update .
I will do a hard reset and see if that helps
Thanks
Currently using Mikshift (latest) with BC's 1.8 kernel, although i don't really know if these has anything to do with my problem.
I have 4G on, and i have a fairly consistent "fair" connection. however, whenever i try to do a wired tether, as soon as i select the "tether" option on the list, the 4g connection drops, tries to reconnect and fails, then reconnects again as soon as i get out of tether mode.
tethering does work, but only with a 3G connection
is this a sprint policy, or is there something going on here? I'm paying $10 extra for stupid 4G, i better be able to tether with it.
Tethering with 4G right now, using PdaNet. Do it all the time.
You can't tether 4g with the built in sprint tether, you need to use a third party app. And for some reason the free third party apps don't work in 3g, so you have to bounce back and forth.

Actually the $10 for Premium Data is what everyone now pays who either activated a new smartphone, placed one on their MIN or upgraded to one on of after 01/30/11. You were fed a nice pile of steaming BS thinking the extra $10 was for 4G. Think about all those customers who don't live within the Clear WiMAX footprint nor travel to one. They too forked out $10/month. I'd suggest getting Easy Tether Pro from the market and use that instead of the default app on the HTC EVO Shift 4G.
Sprint does not cap data usage on 4G devices. It is really unlimited...for now.
Not through the actuall device I get good speeds through the phone but when I use the wireless tethering to my laptop it doesn't even let me download anything past 200 KBs that's pretty slow considering when I use the phone it downloads way way faster than that.

Yes, I did it yesterday.
As the others mentioned - Yes you can with no problems. I'm actually using it on my laptop 90% of the time as the upload speed is quicker than my wifi upload speed. I have a 12mb down and 1.5mb up on wifi and 2.6mb and 2.2mb up on data.
Using AT&T also.
Will this flag for the Infamous "Upgrade service letter" or is it hidden?
On my Iphone 4 it would trigger the letter to be sent when tethering.
Using it to tether to my laptop to do some work anywhere. My kid is using the connection to watch Netflix on my tablet.

Or you can try ye olde Barnacle unrooted. Or indeed the

Although, it does say you 'may need acustom kernel', but given the effort involved in downloading it, it has to be worth having a fiddle..
I use it all the time...htc hd2
Try the Foxfi software, no root needed and able to tether my ASUS Prime...awesome
I'm with AT&T and I was able to tether.
No upgrade service letter so far.
You have to be careful not to exceed your data plan limit though.
I've been tethering for years since my old Samsung blackjack. I use anywhere between 3-4gb a month on average or about 5 with heavy use.
My suggestion for everyone is use it but don't abuse it. I'm on a unlimited plan and have never been throttled.

I plan to use the Nexus 10 mostly at home on WIFI but would like the option of using it away from home, especially on holiday and cannot ever see me using it as a phone, so I just need Internet access.
I'm considering getting a MIFI which I can use when not at home and it will allow me to connect up to 5 devices and I can position the MIFI in the best place for reception whilst I use the devices where it is most comfortable. Also the reception on a MIFI seems better and you can add an antenna to improve it further.
I've tried using my phone as a hot spot on holiday but the reception indoors was not good enough.
So I'm planning to get the WIFI version and buy a MIFI for mobile use and not bother waiting for the 3g version to come out.
The difference in cost between the WIFI version plus MIFI and a 3G version is probably not much.
Has anyone else tried a MIFI + Antenna with an Android tablet and if so which one and how well did it perform?
Any reason to not just set up a phone as a mobile hotspot?

I don't want a 3g tablet so no waiting for me.
I have a 4g mobile hotspot that I can use when I need internet away from regular wifi.It is Verizon so is fast and works with everything instead of haveing several devices on a plan.It is so small I can stick it in a pocket if I needed to and have wifi anywhere on anything instead of just one device.
Unlimited LTE (w/Verizon) + FoxFi = WiFi version for me.
will it be a 3G version!?

No problem! Used it for the first time the other night and it worked great! I believe Sprint & AT&T have it blocked on the Play Store (if you use them). Here's the direct link to get around that http://foxfi.com/bin/
Also, WiFi mode does not work with 4.1 (except on the Verizon Galaxy Nexus). Hopefully they're working on a fix for that...

So what makes you think you'd get any better reception with the Nexus 10 if your phone isn't getting reception either? IMHO, data plans on these devices are a complete and total scam/waste of money. Get the wifi version and tether on your phone. If you are grandfathered into VZW or have the T-Mo/Sprint Unlimited plans you are golden. ATT throttles so screw them.

When I was on holiday in my flat in Spain I had to take my Note One outside on a balcony to get 3g. So I'm hoping that a MIFI with an aerial option placed on the balcony will enable me to stay inside and get 3g.
Also I have a 7.7 and a laptop which also had difficulty getting 3g inside the flat and a MIFI might solve that too with no extra cost.
An MIFI solution will not cost any more than a 3g Nexus 10 which I would need to wait for and I don't want to use the Nexus 10 for making phone calls.
The other reason I like the MIFI solution is that I can go out with my phone and the Nexus 10, 7.7 and laptop can still be used by others in the flat.
I had the same dilemma with the TF101. Luckily I didn't wait for the 3G version in the end as it was released months later.
I'm very happy with a MiFi device. Its on a 30 day contract (1GB for £7 per month) and best of all my tablet isn't consuming extra power running a 3G aerial. I use it every day for 3 hours on the train and charge it every few days.
The signal is also far better then my S3 and S2. But I guess it's designed to keep a high speed data connection open at all times.

But is there any information about a Nexus 10 with 3G/LTE capabilities???
Again, tether your 4G/LTE phone and connect via wifi for 4G speeds. If you are on an unlimited plan you'll have unlimited LTE going straight to it. If you are an unrooted phone learn to root and use FoxFi or install a custom rom with the wifi tethering baked in. If you have an iCrap it should already have the tethering option IIRC.
Hello Everyone,
I was recently got the Idea of buying a 4G LTE router from Verizon to share my data because I have unlimited on our federal government plan. We want to test out this out right now until we can later buy cradlepoint devices. I was wondering if I could tether my phone to my new wireless router the ASUS RT-N66R which does support 3G/4G. The router is on the latest firmware currently. I spent hours trying to get it to connect until 2 things worked for me. If I put the router into Repeater mode I can get a signal off my phone using wifi tether. That's a Motorola Droid 4 Rooted on 4.1.2 which I would like to use to tether full time to the router. For some reason I can't tether USB to the router but wifi to router works Now when I used my company phone we pay for hotspot and tethering well I turned tethering on it did not work. The Tethering from phone to the router worked when I put in *99***9# I don't understand why but it worked and it was fast. I also was using a galaxy S4. So I was wondering if anyone had a solution to me using my personal phone to share data but I need to get the USB tethering to work I don't know if anyone knows a bypass to use the official usb tether. All help is appreciated.

I already tested it out did you read my original post? Through my company phone I can use the official USB Tether option to stream 4G through the USB port at full speeds. With my other phone that has unlimited data I use WiFi tether then setup the Router as a repeater or access point to receive the 4G that way. I mean as long as i get 4G I am fine i just wanted the full speeds and all options of the router. if i put the router in access point mode the option are very limited in features.
I was testing on a nexus4 WiFi/Bluetooth/USB tether and the max speed the Bluetooth could connect was like 10kb/s, USB tether was 10.0MB/s and WiFi tether was like 68 or 70MB/s and for some reason the WiFi tether connection varied in the max throughput for some reason... I am not talking about the 4g max speed, but rather the max connection the phone can send out of BT, USB, & WIFI. you might be handcuffing/bottlenecking your connection through USB.
