Can you tether your Note data connection ? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

If I have other wi-fi devices, can I tether them to my 3G AT&T plan of my Galaxy Note? I am currently paying for the 2 GB monthly plan from AT&T.

yes
Go to setting - wireless n network - tethering n portable hotspot
check Portable wi-fi hotspot
N U R ready to share

Yes, I did it yesterday.

As the others mentioned - Yes you can with no problems. I'm actually using it on my laptop 90% of the time as the upload speed is quicker than my wifi upload speed. I have a 12mb down and 1.5mb up on wifi and 2.6mb and 2.2mb up on data.

Using AT&T also.
Will this flag for the Infamous "Upgrade service letter" or is it hidden?
On my Iphone 4 it would trigger the letter to be sent when tethering.

Using it to tether to my laptop to do some work anywhere. My kid is using the connection to watch Netflix on my tablet.

Or you can try ye olde Barnacle unrooted. Or indeed the
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/. This provides one with more options than the built in hotspot...
Although, it does say you 'may need acustom kernel', but given the effort involved in downloading it, it has to be worth having a fiddle..
I use it all the time...htc hd2

Try the Foxfi software, no root needed and able to tether my ASUS Prime...awesome

I'm with AT&T and I was able to tether.
No upgrade service letter so far.
You have to be careful not to exceed your data plan limit though.

I've been tethering for years since my old Samsung blackjack. I use anywhere between 3-4gb a month on average or about 5 with heavy use.
My suggestion for everyone is use it but don't abuse it. I'm on a unlimited plan and have never been throttled.

Sprint and tethering?

Hey everyone, I just bought my EVO 4g and the main reason I bought it was because of sprints unlimited data. However, after I bought it, sprint lady tells me they charge extra for tethering. If I run cm7 and use the tethering app, will they catch me?
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
I have never heard of anyone being penalized by Sprint for tethering with a rooted phone before but that does not mean it has not happened. I do use tethering once in a while when I am away from home and need data to my laptop. If you are not going crazy (don't run bittorrent on a tethered phone) then you are probably ok. You do have "unlimited" data (what ever that means) but if you start using more than 10GB a month you may attract attention.

Search through the threads, this question has been asked many times before and see if its worth it to you... Its worth it to alot of other members in here... So root and tether away if you like but dont over do it and enjoy or give Sprint $30 a month and dont worry about a thing... The Choice Is Yours!
i tether all the time. no issues.....so far
Yep pretty much just don't go crazy and you should be fine.

You have unlimited web surfing, email, and pictures. Running up excessive amounts of data by downloading or uploading movies, hosting video games, non-stop usage of a video camera, as well as tethering are all violations of your contract.
Sprint cares more about excessive data usage (whether you are paying for tethering or not) than who is tethering without paying for it, because too much data running through the system affects service. Tethering is just running data to your computer from your phone. They charge the $30 because if they did not, more people would use their phones as their primary internet and run up enormous amounts of data (I DON'T THINK SPRINT AGREES WITH THE 235GB CAP PER MONTH THAT COMCAST ALLOWS). The people who have been flagged by Sprint were all using large amounts of data, and quite a few were actually paying for tethering.
I tether exclusively...i download torrents, music, and everything...been doing it since June 4th 2010...no problems! Tether on friend!
I never paid the $30/month and I tether 15-20GB every month. Never had any problems with Sprint.
I also have an employee discount and only have to pay $60/month. Not bad.
I'm a light tetherer but a heavy data user. I use 6-10gb monthly and I have since I started my sprint contract 4 months ago. Just keep down your roaming as sprint allows only 300mb of off network roaming.

It's just important to be responsible about it.
There's nothing wrong with tethering once in a while when it's necessary, there is something wrong with using it as your home internet connection and not paying the extra fee.
It's important to understand that when you abuse the system you're not just hurting us, you're hurting yourself. Why? Because you encourage Sprint to go the route of others. And if they do that, you won't have the option.
Ive EASILY tethered on 4G 100+GB since May. Ofcourse, 4G is ABSOLUTELY unlimited no matter what. I dont think they monitor 4G as much as 3G, since the 4G comes from Clear, really. I dont tether 3G much at all. But yea, tether away....just dont do anything illegal.

Sprint store employees try to sell sprint's $30 a month hotspot and will tell you that is the only way to tether. I do not have this service, and I tether like a madman and have never been charged. I've used PDAnet, wifi tether, and the cm7 built in hot spot option. You have no need to worry, tether away.

I have tethered as well and had no issues. Mainly use it only when I need to if there isn't any wifi options when I am not at home or work.
I use a program called PDANet.
Search Android Market, Free App
If you are by 4g when you tether then knock yourself out. They don't monitor 4g at all so u can do whatever. But if you use 3g they track the amount of data but its still unlimited. Just like everyone else said. Don't go crazy with the 3g and you will be in the clear.
P.s. I tethered while out of town for a month in a very good 4g area. Easily used 40+ gigabytes of data during that month (torrents and whatnot) and nothing. No message, no extra charge. Zilch. So if your in 4g ur in the clear as far as I'm concerned.
Edit: btw I use the wireless tether app that's available in the market

Thanks for the info, there's a wimax tower literally around the corner from my apartment, so I'm planning to use my new epic 4g touch to tether extensively, but I was worried about them scolding me I don't plan to use 3g much at all since 4g coverage is pretty good.

Wifi tethering and T Mobile txt message about upsell to mobile hotspot plan.

I'm currently using the stock rom with root GS 2 w/2.3.6 . The only thing I did is remove most of the bloat ware and uninstall the wifi tethering manager app that blocks the use of it without a hot spot data plan. I was using my wifi hotspot and all the suddenly got a txt message about upsell to hot spot plan if not my tethering will be block. As anybody experience this. I came from a Vibrant and never got this txt message. Only once did I go over the 5gb data cap with a G2 a while back. I'm under the old unlimited data plan ( 5gb soft cap). With the Vibrant I was using a Team Whiskey rom not the stock rom. Do you think it could be the stock rom or just tmobile being more smart about detecting this now.

My phone is rooted and I have deleted tether management app. Also I use Open Garden Wifi tether app from market. From what I understand, it enables the build in tether but without sending a msg to Tmobile.
All you smart people, please correct me if I am wrong.
I have been using Open Garden WIFI Tether for almost a week without any problems. I just leave it open while driving. My son access it with his IPod Touch and my daughter with rooted NOOK Tablet. So far so good.
Tmo rep here. The tethering plan has always been $15 but Tmo has never really enforced it. They have recently started preventing tethering from working on devices but it is still pretty hit or miss. On my coworker's stock Amaze she is getting blocked even on the employee data plan but on my GS2 I have never been restricted but I've always been rooted.
Starting on the 25th of this month, they will be adding free tethering to 5GB data plans so if you do a a 5 gig plan, just have Tmo update the data feature and you should have no problem tethering. If you are just on a 2GB plan, you should be fine if you are rooted.

Just called in (had to call in and ask for cancellations to even speak to anyone) the idiot I spoke to never heard of this promotion. Never had a tethering problem until yesterday when I tried it after reading this thread. I never had a problem with my N1 or Sensation. I really hate having to talk to people at Tmo. 90% of the time they are so stupid I'm ready to cancel my contract. I guess I will root and axe the wifi mgmt app and see if it works. If I have to call those idiots again I may be moving to Sprint.
From the wording of the TMO News document picture
http://www.tmonews.com/2012/01/t-mobile-launching-new-hush-hush-promotional-plans-on-january-25th/
it looks like you have to be upgrading to 5gb or 10gb to get this. The person I spoke to today said they always charge for tethering. Just like the dozen people I spoke with 6 months ago told me they always charge for wifi calling and there was no $20 5gb preferred plan. Not sure if dealing with these people is worth the money saved. smh
i juts called to ask about a thing on my bill and they offered me the upgrade to the 5gb for an extra 10 dollars per month, i dont really tether and im always either at my home wifi or my work's wifi, but im reeeally starting to think about sprint here, the problem is i travel overseas and i need a gsm phone.
if not ill switch to simple mobile, a friend has it and he has had no problems so far with it with international calling and 4g for 60 bucks i can be happy with that price, i would have to ask about the quality of the service though and get the unlock code for my phone first.

It's not free, the tether feature has been built into Android for awhile. And after awhile T-Mobile will block your tethering, so change your PC's UserAgent to an Android device from T-Mobile.

Yes, actually, it does. The T-Mobile unlimited data plans do NOT include tethering. No one is receiving "free" tethering because they have a nexus. T-Mobile will eventually spot it and block them from tethering.
if you have a nexus with the tethering on it your not buying separate tether cause your using your phones same id and whatever your data plan is 2gig, 4gig, 8 gig, or unlimited, your using your allowed data to share to your own gooods, now if you sign up for carrier tethering you use whatever allotment or data you signed up for to share however you may want because your paying separately for the ability to share,,
I thought that after that lawsuit with Verizon, the FCC said that blocking tethering apps was illegal:
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Verizon-FCC-Settlement-Tethering-Blocked-Applications,16583.html
Unfortunately that only applies to Verizon.

Because "unlimited data" is for use on the actual phone. Phone as a modem or pam, tethering and or streaming aren't part of the description and violation of the TOS... You risk throttling, additional charges or termination of services. YMMV

Note: Right after that posting 01/07/13.
I was throttled the next day after trying it on straight talk. Needed to access the net via my wife's iphone to download the apn app to get her data to work again. Less than 842k file.
But I did leave proxy settings in, as I was troubleshooting their suddenly slow resolve.
Previously on my sgs3 I used wifi tether on and off as needed. Tethering my n7 and other devices for minimal use. Without proxy settings in the last 6 months.
It's in their TOS, that your are ultimately responsible for device compatibilities and even if your phone has a certain feature, it doesn't mean you can use it.
So YMMV.

[Q] Tethering a Nexus 7 to a Nexus 4 on T Mobile Truly Unlimited

Okay. I've searched XDA and Google, and even posted in another thread here but never got an answer. I am leaving VZW for T Mobile. I am expecting my Nexus 4 to arrive this coming week. I plan on rooting the N4 pretty much as soon as I get it. I have also read lots of posts regarding difficulties tethering a laptop to an N4 on Tmo.
My question is:
Will I be able to tether (wifi or BT) my N7 to my Tmo N4? If so, will i have to use any special apps?
I have had success using PdaNet+ on my VZW phones to tether my N7, but I need to know if Tmo will flag me for the N7 like they do with others for their laptops. My daily usage includes the Slacker Radio and NetFlix apps. i also have OnLive, but didn't typically use it that much due to high latency issues in the Lynnhaven area of Virginia Beach. If absolutely needed, I am open to the VPN option, but I would need instruction as to how to do that (like do I set up the VPN on the N7 or the N4?) but I would prefer, if possible, to just tether normally.
Thanks in advance. Btw, please no "it works for me" posts. If you're going to answer, please provide relevant information(i.e. HOW it works for you). Thanks again!

i'm on Orange UK (aka. EE now also incorporating T-Mobile) and couldn't originally tether either my dell NB or playbook -- that is, they could connect to the N4 wifi hotspot but no data transfer nor internet access was possible. this was despite my being able to tether successfully on my old HD2 using the same account.
turned-out i needed to phone Orange and have them activate tethering on the phone, i received an "service update" text and restarted, since when it's worked a treat on both devices. there was no charge for this and i was told that orange imposes no restrictions on tethering outside of the existing account data cap, in my case 1GB.
t-mobile may operate a different policy.
EDIT: just realized, Norfolk ... Virginia (not UK), doh!
I'm on tmobile US on the unlimited plan and I'm able to, love it the only thing battery sucks :/

Truly Unlimited blocks the tethering feature from being added to your account. However, since the Nexus 4 is a stock device and doesn't connect to the network using the tethering APN while tethering is enabled, you should be able to tether any device to your Nexus 4 without issue.
Sv: [Q] Tethering a Nexus 7 to a Nexus 4 on T Mobile Truly Unlimited
Yes you can tether to the Nexus 4 on T-Mo. I don't it a lot but I used to the tether to the Nexus 4 a couple times when no WiFi was available.
Skickat från min Nexus 4
Well that's why I'm asking the question. There is no WIFI at my work so without tethering to my N4, I will have no way to use my N7 online. Like I said in the OP. I watch Netflix everyday during down time and stream Slacker Radio while I'm working. I work security on 9.5 hour shifts. Netflix and Slacker just make the day go by.
Just for anyone wondering, I have had no issues tethering my Nexus 7 with my Nexus 4. Been doing it for a couple weeks now with no issues. Actually, with Verizon 4G, my data speeds would fall of rapidly as the day went on, dropping down below 1 Mbps by noon. With T-Mobile's HSPA+, I have been getting between 8 Mbps and 12 Mbps down and around 2 Mbps up consistently all day every day.

From what I have read throughout my searches on XDA and Google, it seems that as long as you are tethering another mobile device, i.e. a tablet, they don't seem to be able to tell. I have also read some accounts saying not to use "desktop mode"in your browser. I have been using Chrome, Firefox, Netflix, OnLive, and even BitTorrent (small files so far) with no issues so far.

Ok. So I discovered after taking out my three contract with unlimited data that they do not allow tethering. Tthis is an really bad inconvenience for me as I spend time at my friends who does not have home internet.
Anyway I setup a vpn on my router at home which I connect to on my phone, and with the use of clockwork tether, I can tether my phone via usb to the laptop and it works fine. No issues there.
the problems start when I try to tether wirelessly. I get no internet access. If I connect my 3DS to my phone, I can access the eshop and can connect to the nintendo network, but when I try to play online on mario kart for instance, I get disconnected.
Im assuming wifi tethering requires more than just enabling it on my phone, like it does with usb tethering.
Does anyone know how to solve this issue and could they possibly guide me through how to do it?
Cheers.
Are you on the One Plan? If so you should be allowed to tether. I am.

Im not on the One Plan, no. I didn't realise mobile carriers actually put blocks in place to stop tethering. I had no issues tethering with my Galaxy S2 when I was on T-Mobile, so I never even considered it when I switched to Three and got my Galaxy Note 3.
The only way to tether on 3 is to pay an extra monthly fee with data restrictions or upgrade to the One Plan.

Well like I said, I can tether no problem when im connected to my VPN, it's just wifi tethering that im still having problems with. I refuse to pay an extra £5 a month for a measly 1GB of tethering data, its absolutely scandelous, and Three won't upgrade me to the One Plan until my contract expires, which isnt for another 23 months. So this is what im stuck with.
There must be a way to tether via wifi while connected to a vpn.
Sorry mate, i cant really help. I'm surprised they won't allow you to upgrade though. After all, it means more money for them.

Yeah, I kinda expected it though. A number of people have reported the same thing, not just from Three either.
Anyone have any solutions?
I read something about changing iptables or something using a terminal, but I have no idea how to go about this. If someone could explain, that would be great?
