Reboot. Turn off your Wifi first, then enable wifi hotspot tethering.
I tried that and it didn't work.
I don't have data connection but I tried to turn it on and it worked fine.
Hmmmm. Looks like i need to pay 15$ extra to get the service enabled on Tmobile. Strange how i never had to do that with my Nexus One.
I had the same problem, but I kept trying and it eventually worked.

Do you have some really old and cheap data plan?
They can detect it if you don't pay right?

LOL wut? Course they can detect it. How else do they know if you're over your limit or not. LOL. And no that's not illegal.
One of the things advertised with the NS is no charge for wifi teathering. I think they only require a fee on the 4g devices.

That's why I asked the OP if he/she had an old cheap data plan. You have to have a current data plan.
Can they detect if you have an old plan? Yes. Can they detect if you're using the tethering/hotspot feature? Probably. Can they detect how much bandwidth you're using? Definately.
Must have an Android plan. Some got away with using a lesser plan but not all apps work. Visual voicemail etc....

Huh? Like they know when you've gone over the limit when X surpasses Y, i.e, 210mbs(X)>200mbs(Y)

Yes EM+ with unlimited data is fine.
I was replying to slowz3r cuz he said it was illegal if they can "detect it".
And yes, they can detect if you've gone over the limit, or overusing data plan, etc.

[Q] Wifi problem?
I unlocked and rooted today and thought everything was fine. However, after the phone was factory reset, all of my apps didn't auto update like before after signings in and Im having a wierd wifi issue.
I can connect to access points but now I can't actually use wifi. The 2 or 3g sign will still be on. Even if I have full bars on wifi I can't use wifi. I went into recovery and fixed permissions and the problem still persists. I have no idea how to fix it short of a factory reset. Could rooting have anything to do with it?

WifI probs after new update
I've seen the Mobile network problem but this is different . My WiFi signal sits in white and not green until I manually forget network and re apply the SSID.
Worked perfect before update , would walk into my home and it would pick up and connect .
Anyone else having this problem or no of a cure ?

I've had problems with three different handsets (iPhone 3G, Vibrant, Nexus) on different Wi-Fi routers. Believe it or not, what usually fixes the problem is updating the router to it's latest available firmware. I haven't kept up with all of the varieties of WPA2 or 802.11N, but it's helped me...
cheers , I was looking at a new router after Xmas . Thing is it worked flawlessly before the update .
I will do a hard reset and see if that helps
Thanks

I have been using mobile ap on my vibrant, but today it suddenly stopped. Data still works fine from the phone, but my pc (win 7 64) can't load a thing.
I get a solid wifi connection, just no internet. Tried usb tether and got the same thing. If I switch to the neighbor's wifi (shh...) it works fine. Flashed the new mobile ap for JI6, no dice.
the only reason I have my suspicions it may be blocked is that this happened after about 2 hours of streaming hulu. definitely not throttled, though bc I'm getting at least 1.2 Mbps on speed test on the phone. Also don't eat a ton of data other then today, so I'm sure I'm not at that 5GB limit.
Any thoughts?

tangent but i thought t-mobile removed that 5gb limit and would just throttle speed after hitting that "limit"?

I haven't tried today, but yesterday I was able to do it just fine. JI6 and AP for JI6. If I get a chance to try it today, I'll let you know if it's still working for me.
I do think I remember seeing another thread with a similar problem, not sure if it ever got resolved.
Same thing happened to me but tmobile said there was maintenance in my area. I haven't tried it this morning to confirm its working yet.

Ya, I'm sure it isn't everybody or there'd be a **** storm in the forums. I'm just wondering if maybe tmo looks at the rate of data condones consumed and figures the high rate must be tethered and somehow blocks that traffic?
Hoping that's not the case and I just need to change some connection settings.

Tethering is technically against t-mobile's T&C, however, they are really pretty lenient about it. In fact, as a rep, we used to help people set up their blackberries to tether until recently. That's the way it should be, I think. Let me use my data access and if I reach the throttle point in a couple hours and have it throttled the other 29 days, that should be my call.
Anyway, that's a tangent. Good news is, I downloaded barnacle and selected "skip wpa_supplicant" in the settings and it's working great now. Not sure what the issue was before since samsung's mobile ap DID work fine for the last couple months. ::shrug:: i can return to "abusing" my t-mobile web access now.
Good to know... I saw there's "Wireless Tether" app or something like that, which I'm guessing basically makes your phone a Wireless AP... has anyone tried it?

I ran into this issue attempting to run the JI2 MobileAP on JI6(and JI5), but I've not attempted to run JI6 MobileAP on JI6 for fear of having the same issue.
To get around this, I USB tethered off my phone and setup and adhoc on my laptop using that connection for others to connect too.

I thought it was 10 GB?
Is the throttling back an automatic thing? I pulled in a bit over 10gb this month and haven't experienced any slowdowns (right now I'm pulling 5.5mbps down and 1.3mbps up).
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/10/t-mobile-reducing-data-cap-will-throttle-speeds-after-5gb-of-usage/
supposedly on the 16th after 5gb data speed will be slowed, before it was 10gb

Bear in mind also that the throttle limit (10gb now/possibly 5gb later on) only applies to the data you have used when connected with 3g/Edge. Wifi is a wonderful thing when tethering!

little off topic here, but if you're bored, i wouldn't mind a review of the tab. i've seen it from the tech blogs standpoint, but i'd like to see an actual user review it.
just a thought.
It depends on the version you get whether you need to buy with a plan or not. Sprint, for example, does not offer the tab without a plan, but Verizon does.

I've seen the other similar threads but I couldn't find anywhere, anyone who has asked these questions specifically:
Sprint recently added a 5GB data cap to their "tethering" services that comes with the Sprint Hotspot. I understand that "handset" data however, is still to remain unlimited...
1.) So when using the Wifi tethering app from the market, which data does it use on Sprint's network? Tethering, or handset?
2.) If you're using Sprint's hotspot app - the hacked/modded versions devs have been making- which does it use?
3.) And finally, if you have a rom like SRF1.2 that bypasses proxies and does other network tweaks, which does it use with them?
My phones are below if you need to know what I'm running.

Okay good, that is my setup.
Short of torrenting pirated movies or other bandwidth-heavy activities, I don't have to worry about getting a nasty letter from them about using too much traffic then?
I normally just stream Netflix all day, check for updates on SRF1.3, and check G+ 3 or 4 times daily.
They all use the same data. Sprint just doesn't believe that a phone by itself will ever reach the 5 gb mark, and for the most part, they're right. Normal use of a phone should fall well below that mark, although video streaming could push it...
But try downloading 6 gigs on your phone each month, legitimately exceeding the 5 gig threshold without violating the new terms of service (in other words, without using any form of tethering), and I'd be willing to bet that your speed will still be throttled. You may even receive a letter about a violation, or about purchasing theory tethering plan. (Paying for their tethering doesn't count for this experiment, since it has already been established that that plan does get throttled, and it involves supplying a data connection to a device other than your phone)

As long as you arent abusing tethering like downloading huge torrents and using it as your main internet on 3g, you should be fine... i mean i know tons of people that posted in other threads that always go over the 5gb limit and sprint doesnt throttle or charge u.. just dont use it for torrents or online gaming via ps3 or xbox.
You should be fine if you do go over

Hopefully it stays that way - they *just* changed the terms of service within the past month, so only time will tell.
If you pay for their tethering package, then the app checks in with their network when you start it (this was the part that needed to be hacked to get the native hotspot working for free, essentially) - that would be the only way Sprint would know which data is used for tethering, and it could end up being inflated by any data use on your phone while the tether app is running (unless the app actually reports when data is being pulled for a connected device instead of the phone - but that's more bandwidth wasted...)

I really don't think Sprint cares. I had no home internet for about 2 weeks recently, so I used the tethering hack. During tha time I torrented over 30 GB of tv over 4g and never got a warning or throttling.

I had been reading from the sprint website about their unlimited plans and sprint's customer support responses to people. The results are promising, for now.
They basically said as long as network usage remains balanced between light and heavy users, everything will remain unlimited forever. (We obviously know forever means 1 or 2 years at the rate people are jumping over to the unlimited bandwagon).
Even with the iPhone users coming over, they say it's going to remain unlimited as long as not EVERYONE is being a heavy user. If everyone becomes heavy, the CEO said they will think about tackling a different approach to tiered-usage once that boat comes along, but I guess we're all okay for now.

I dont really know but i think that it just uses android's driver and permission from SU (superuser) to form itself into a wifi hotspot. For number two, if you hack you're phone, you're still going to pay for SPRINT hotspot app. However, wifi hotspot(from market) is free. I don't know number 3.. sorry :/

False. I don't pay them $30/month and I use the hacked version of the hotspot app albeit not very much. That's the whole point of hacking it, so you don't have to pay the extra $30/month.

In the future, starting a new thread instead of hijacking mine is suggested... but I'm feeling generous before I go to bed the A.M.
You simply don't start 4G until after your device is connected via wifi on 3G.
*Start wifi tether
*connect device
*Turn on 4G
In that order and it should work fine.
Try that and report your results please.

Hmmm, sorry that didn't work. Please let me know your findings then so I have another solution to add for future peeps with such an issue.
So I got the Value plan after getting my Nexus 4 (unlimited data) but been having tethering issues. Please try to help me out if you actually understand the situation, don't just say "It works for me..."
Here's the deal, wired tethering works if I use Clockwork Mods Tether App. I used to think I needed to start up my Chrome from a Nexus 4 User agent, but same thing with and without, it works with the tether app (which obviously uses a companion app on the computer). BUT....A while ago tether never worked with the clockwork mod tether app if I didn't use the UA switch, but now it does, IDK whatever, T-mobile is weird.
However, straight from the settings, WiFi or wired tether never works, with or without APN and UA change (on comp), meaning I especially wont be able to use it on my PS3 and such. Now, I'm not sure if its a hidden APN thing, IDK, though I did create a separate APN and tried that out with the stock tether in the phone and it didn't work.
Anyone know any solutions, T-mobile is pretty good lol...? Lemee say thanks in advance
(A solution i would want is to be able to use it on my PS3 again, on something where I'm not able to install a clockwork mod tether app lol, a process be done phone side to bypass...)
Bump
No help?

Because you are using too much data. Their montly 4G plans are capped at a maximum 5GB per month, says it right on their website, after that they throttle you down to 2G speeds. They can also see the unique ip address of everything your tethering, some tethering apps say they can hide the address or at least spoof it so it looks like its coming just from the phone, but if you still use too much data your screwed.

Well the new unlimited 4g value plan is unlimited, and there is NO throttling. However, you can't tether. I was just wondering how they can tell that the data is coming from a tethered laptop and not the phone itself.

Its probably a combination between UA strings and excessive data not usual with a smartphone.

I agree, but how can they tell? It's not from excessive data usage, at least for me.

I've heard of a number ways they can do this, no one really know for sure they just know they can. One is that each device you connect has a unique identifier so they know its not your phone connecting. Another is that with TMo and AT&T in particular all the tethering apps used to use an APN just for tethering and AT&T monitors that APN for traffic to make sure you paid for it. Some wifi tethering apps try to avoid this by not using that APN. I've also read speculation that its the browsers themselves you use that give you away as they have unique identifier strings they send out with each request. This last one maybe the same thing I mentioned first, in that even the same browser on a different device will have different identifiers. So if you use chrome on the phone and on the desktop they will show up as two different devices giving you away.

The whole point of the Monthly 4G plans with the 5GB cap is to tether.
Like i said i could still tether with the clockwork mod app, so whatever its doing (im guessing adding vpn's and stuff on the computer) is working, then i set my chrome browser UA to desktop mode Nexus 4 Chrome. Sometimes if you are not using the UA string, ittl show you the tmobile page. I don't know but kudos to magenta, there method works when you actually get flagged (which im guessing not many do...)
Has anyone noticed difficulties with wifi tethering on tmobile since update 4.3?
I was able to bypass the T-Mobile hotspot plan before the update (rooted) using pdanet+ but since updating to 4.3 it takes me right to the tmobile hotspot page informing me that i dont have the feature on my plan.
I also tried smart wifi tether but that gave me the same issue.
Has tmobile just gotten wise to all of the wifi tethering or do the apps just not have it working correctly on 4.3?
has anyone noticed what.. that tmobile has caught on to your theft?
they want everyone to switch to their new plans, the new data packages all include tethering. they all include unlimited tethering, except the completely unlimited high speed data package includes 500mb(but can buy more). if you are tethering another device, they arent counting it towards tethering, laptops/desktops they do.

That didnt really answer my question. Plenty of people use rooted phones with tethering apps to bypass carriers outrageous fees for the service. I had it working fine on 4.2.2 but since I updated to 4.3, the same setup i was previously using is now bringing me right to the carrier sign up page. Which means it is no longer working as intended. I was curious about the cause of this and if there was any way to get it working again.

I can usb tether with pdanet+ but it definitely seems buggier than it used to be, and wifi tethering is way more useful.
I use a Google chrome extension and it works

I can not tether on paranoid android or the latest vanir nightly. I'm on the T-Mobile $70 unlimited everything plan. Tethering works fine on all ROMs but these two.

Hi, i not agree that this is a theft.Tethering option is provided from google the same way as blackberry os ,when i had blackberry 9700 there was nothing that says tethering plan or something. There was even an option to dial from windows connection for modems with some combination of digits and these #*.Now i am not even trying to find a loophole .Nexus is with non tmobile software so the first problem is resolved, and second, guys on ubuntu there is nothing like tmobile upsell page, your connection does not being rooted to their transparent proxy witch actualy detects windows , and shows the upsell page.If you want free legal (without modification anything on the phone or pc) yeah you need ubuntu and chrome, opera though doesn't work so this browser is dead to me hahah.Basically when i got my nexus i just connected it with usb to tether and everything was working. And t mobile has enough bandwith megahertz to handle heavy users like me , i do around 250 gb per month. And if you live alone u can cut your home internet.Well if i was rich like most americans i was going to think like you probably haha

Hi i think you were able to tether on 4.2.2 because unlimited data now has 500 mb tethering, so probably at the time u upgrade android, you already used them.Nothing wrong with stock 4.3, seriously.

i agree with you. the option to tether is free to use, its provided by the phone default. but, you are using tmobiles service which is not free. your ability to tether is free, but the right to use tmobiles services while tethered is not free, and we are obliged to follow their rules(legally), or they can and will stop their service.
imagine buying a car, it has an engine, wheels, everything needed to drive. but, even though you can freely drive, you have to purchase gas. you arent entitled to the gas free, even though the car has the ability to drive included.
most americans rich? what world are you living in? its definitely not reality for sure..
Ok u got me, but i would change my statement to "if i was getting 50-60k"..Because i am democrat i would say the only unlimited wireless super fast internet for $20 in the world(checked japan, south Korea, England, nobody has that ), well i will take advantage of it , and even with a risk t mobile makes some new firewall for linux, i still share the infh and somehow thats make me feel " wow i have the fastest wireless internet in the world, at least".Its another reality i am aware...

i make around $50000 a year, which sounds like a lot. but.. in live in nyc, where the cost of living is much more than everywhere else in the US. so my 50000 has a realistic value of about 25000-30000 if you compare it to other US cities, which is nothing. i live paycheck to paycheck, and have a hard time filling my needs.
$20 internet? i pay 50+20(unlimited+tax) so it turns out to be around $82.
Yeah i even want to get off these 500 min for $35,but its not posible, don't know how it is in NY but i can give u an example the gasoline here in san francisco region is the most expensive. And i am getting lower than nothing.Even i'm filing for disability welfare i worked 7 years with no vacation, paying taxes on instalments for 2008-2012 and i know that nothing is gonna change so lets get some money from the best country in the world. My disability its not even on the list in my country.Dont go there for vacation its gonna be the worst ever vacation , Bulgaria.

yea, its expensive in san fran also, i have family there. and im in the same boat, last week long vacation was in 2006.
sure, we might make more money in the US, but the cost of living is very expensive too(in big cities, less in the country. less pay in the country as well). i know movies/tv show how great we live in the us, but for the majority of people here its not realistic, its a fantasy.

Maybe its just a flaw in PA? I would hope that gets updated soon

I'm on T-Mobile and was able to tether my wife's phone via WiFi, my tablet via Bluetooth and my laptop via usb while on PA and CM (both 4.3 and not at the same time) with no problems. I'm using one of the hybrid kernels. I'm also using T-Mobile's new plan with 2.5GB of data.

So I was in the PA thread over in the original development section and i searched for the hotspot issue. It seems that other people are also having issues using a hotspot on tmobile while on the rom. I saw a post that said some people have the issue and some dont. However it was hard to see if it ever got resolved because that thread is an absolute zoo. I was gonna post a question about it and how it might be resolved but I dont have enough posts to be allowed in the development section.
Demonic, it seems like you were one of the lucky ones that it happens to work for on. See i can usb tether, but wifi hotspot will just redirect to a tmobile webpage no matter if its a phone or a laptop thats connected to it.

Im using all the stock settings, i never modified anything.
-I was on stock android, got the OTA for 4.3
-Then rooted and flashed PA and their gapps
-havent modified any apn settings with the exception of the "use defaults" option to reset my connection (but i dont believe that changes anything)
My tmo plan is the 30 dollar prepaid with 100 minutes and 5gb of 4g (it worked fine on this plan before on rooted 4.2.2 but i was not on PA)
