My experience:
1.- Stock experience.
I've been comparing the DZ to an X10 (1GHz SoC), performing the same tasks simultaneously on both. Without any overclocking, the Desire Z really blows the antenna off the X10.
IMHO HTC did a great job with the DZ and Sense here, this phone was already smooth as butter beforehand. I love scrolling with the "Asteroid belt" live wallpaper, full web browsing, viewing pics... everything is slick.
My batt life was pretty decent but not overstanding (it barely makes it to the end of the day, but I am aware I really sqweeze it, heavy user am I ).
2.- After Overclocking.
I've got some days with the godspeed overclocked (stock) kernel @ 1.42 GHz, no particular SetCPU profile set, just flashed and went staright to my standard everyday use:
- Battery life barely affected, I'd say unnoticeable unless I start to play games .
- Heavy tasks do run better @ 1.42 GHz, I can notice the improvement from loading angry birds to viewing powerpoints to web browsing, but I really don't notice any difference when using small "normal" apps.
- Quadrant score: 2471 @ 1.42 GHz (range fluctuates from 2100 to 2500)
Can somebody recommend me a good Doom/Quake like game ??
I tested overclock temporarily to about 1.3Ghz via the old temp root method (before we got the full root) and in all honesty I feel the stock default speed is very fast as it is. Until I actually come across a laggy situation (a high end game or something) then I am not really going to both with overclocking.
But would love to do it using a method not requiring flashing - something just done under root.
Stock Experience
This is my third htc android phone after having a hero, desire and now the z. Nothing about battery life on the z was going to surprise me after owning the desire. Stock battery life on the desire was shocking! underclocking saved it completely. Now although the Z is better its not much.
Battery life on stock you would be lucky to last a day, even without much use.
Custom Experience
Now to get the best out of all my android phones battery life I do 2 things. Underclock for screen off as low as your phone will allow (and powersave governor), on the desire and the z I could go as low as any kernel would allow us too, my hero was not so good and didn't like the low speeds
Overclock when in use (I got to 1.4ghz and get a nice experience), with a good governor, ideally the new "smartass" governor, but interactive or ondemand will be fine.
I now get about 48 hours from it, with a descent amount of use. Which is great for me, I charge it every night anyway.

Stock Experience
Day two after getting my DZ I installed Quadrant Standard and performed a benchmark. The best I got was 1588, and that was completely stock with a few apps installed. The more I seemed to install on it the "worse" the numbers seemed to get..although my lowest score was only around the 1400 mark.
As far as battery went I was lucky to get 8 hours out of the phone (although I was obviously tweaking and playing with it alot). I followed a few of the battery saving tips here http://www.goodandevo.net/2010/05/20-tips-to-improve-htc-evo-4g-battery-life.html and it seemed to improve it so I could at least get 10-12 hours from it.
Overclocking
Since going to the 1.4Ghz overclock kernal this morning, the highest Quadrant score i've seen is high 1800's. Not a huge jump imo over the initial stock clock i was running..but I can definately tell the phone is running faster now.
Battery has yet to be determined as I just installed setCPU last night and havent' fully had a chance to gauge whether it's impacting battery yet or not.
EDIT: After flashing 1.4 on my phone in the morning..by the afternoon I was getting some funky things happening with the phone (weird sound quality during calls, getting stuck on reboot screen) so I uninstalled and flashed the 1.2 on to try it out. After rebooting I did a Quadrant test, but this time I put SetCPU from On-demand to Performance..and my Quadrant score broke 2k. So now i'm curious as to what I would get with the 1.4 kernal running Performance mode..but i'm leery about the way my phone was acting while using it..
Been trying to flash 1.4 but my phone freezes at boot and does not happen anything, however with 1.2 ghz I get a quadrant of 1900 - 2000.
Any ideas what I can do so my phone can flash the 1.4 ghz kernel? Or simply my phone can handle it?

a) try the new s-off method (uber root with scotty2's gfree)
b) download the 1.4Hz update again, and check the MD5 checksum

MD5 checksum are correct, I used your method for "dummies" and was able to flash the 1.2 ghz, why should not I be able to flash the 1.4?
Why trying a) will help me?

I did now the uberrot method and tried to flash your 1.4 ghz and no succes it gets stuck in the htc quietly brilliant splash

You're just putting on a new kernel, right ? What ROM version do you have ? I wonder if there's an incompatibility.
1.4ghz setcpu with the vision_oc.ko module load after every boot, oldest method found on this forum, stock rom, quadrant around 2200.

Yes what I am doing is download the zip enter into recovery mode and flash zip from sd card. No wipe since I am on stock Rom rooted and s-OFF. I can flash the 1.2 but not the 1.4

I don't use that method. There's an easier way without rebooting to bootloader:
Open the ROM Manager app
Tap "Install ROM from SD card"
then, scroll to choose the OC Kernel Update
ROM manager will do the rest.
Try this.

This was the first method I tried following your guide but not even like this. I wonder if it is the phone that cannot simply take the overclock isn't it a way of getting a kernel with standard 800 able to overclock to 1.4???

you are not alone, another user has reported problems not being able to flash the 1.4GHz update, but the other ones flash OK this is curious

I had that too, try to flash the 1.2 Ghz first and then the 1.4

I have a Desire Z with the 1.8GHz kernel and CyanogenMod 6.1 CR1.
I got a Quadrant score of about 2842 with no other apps running afterboot.
I upgraded from a HTC Magic and I had a X10 Mini in between (dont ask)
I missed the keyboard and this was cheaper then a desire HD with the same screen res (I know the physical size is smaller)
With the kernel hack and cyanogen im getting about 36hours of battery life but I am a relatively light user and generally keep my phone on charge at night/in the office
Im tempted to try the 1.9GHz hack but I want to make sure the 1.8 is stable for a week or so first. However the bottle neck is now more around memory/2d graphics so increasing the speed wont add much

I downloaded both apps to overclock my X. the unstableapps version made my X reboot constantly no matter what I set it at. Now I'm trying the JRummy16 app. I set it at 1.45 at medium voltage. No reboots, however, while playing a simple game, it hesitates and skips and jumps around. Also, I ran a quadrant benchmark 4 times and never scored over a 1400. My X running the newest Apex Rom scores over 1500 all the time. Any help with this app would be appreciated, or is it just a waste of time?
I can tell you right now JRummy's app is a keeper. However, Quadrant should be completely be disregarded immediately. Quadrant scores are a terrible way to judge anything. This has been discussed so many times I don't feel like saying it again but a short rundown is that their are so many tweaks that can change that number so drastically without an actual effect on performance.

But what about what I said about the game? Seems funny that it would start doing that after I overclock it.. Shouldn't that improve performance while playing a game or while running any other application?
and btw, i'm on here everyday multiple times and have never seen any major discussions about quadrant benchmark scores.. (other than the hundreds of people using it to brag about their X's all the time)
Your phone doesn't like that speed apparently so either go to high voltage or go down to like 1.30 and see what happens. I have found out that my phone likes 1.15 low voltage the best.
Just sounds like that speed is too high for your phone. Mine's best at 1.35. The x comes with 1ghz stock because it's stable on all phones. Some can handle more, some can't. You just gotta find your sweet spot.

First of all, 1.45 is way too over clocking. I haven't seen too many Droid X that's stable at 1.45ghz. My recomemdation is to drop it down to 1.2 or 1.3 ghz. Mine is most stable at 1.2ghz low voltage. My other recomendation is to install Autokiller and have it preset at Extream or Ultimate. It keeps enough memory freed up at all times to run apps with out freezing your phone. Autokiller will make your phone snappier and smoother. At least from my experience.
Even though most people say that quadrant score is Not relevent in real life, I feel thats score has some truth to it. My Quad score stock ranges any where from 1250 to 1400. When I over clock it to 1.2 ghz low voltage (MY CURRENT SETTING), score ranges from 1500 to 1600 or some times even little higher. When I over clock to 1.3 ghz, score improves again. It scores as high as 1700+ which I'm sure means some thing.
Be careful when u running any auto task killers. Linux, androids base, has always handled processes well and managed ram well. If this was wm we would be having a different discussion. As for quadrant score I guess its an alright tool to compare ur settings on your phone bit a comparison better two different phone is not reliable at all. But actual phone performance regardless of the benchmark is always best, I normally run at 900 ghz at 45-46 vsel and the phone flies on gummyjar and rubix

That's what I was told also. That Android manages Ram well how ever when I was running Widget Locker, LP along with other apps including games, my phone would freeze or delay on me. When I check the RAM, it was going as low as 25MB available. Ever since I preset the AutoKiller to Ultimate, my phone shows over 150MB available and phone has been running really smooth with NO frezzing or delay.
Autokiller is not the same as a task killer. It assists android's internal memory management system. It just tweaks it to your liking, just like all the other mods and hacks you do to your phone.

I have the latest blur update os.... its rooted with Z4root.... when I use setcpu to overclock it was maxed out to 1.0 ghz.. what are some great kernals so I can overclock to 1.2 which I hear makes a world of a difference on the droid x

dont think DX has any kernels as of yet because of the locked bootloader.
i think there is an app you can buy on the market though that will overclock the dx
believe they modify the kernel after startup, not really sure cause i dont use it
1ghz is fine for me..
thikn its made by jrummy, try typing it in on the market see if it comes up

Also all chips are not created equal. They maybe in spec's but not all can achieve higher OC. I'm can't go over 1150 GHZ while some can go way higher. Speed does come with a price mileage may vary.
As suggested the JRummy app works great for me plain & simple.
check out some deblured Rom's if you want speed also there are some blended Blur Rom's coming soon to a phone near you.

I've been trying to find the best procedure to oc/uv my Droid X running rooted stock GB. Currently I'm using Milestone Overclock to adjust the max frequency and set vsel, as well as SetCpu for custom profiles. Milestone Overclock appears to only allow modifying vsel for the max frequency (rather than a distinct vsel for each frequency).
Is it sufficient to use Milestone's single vsel modification? Or should I be using another OC app like QuickClock for the best uv results?

I only use Milestone. Works for me. Battery life is fine.
I'm running at 1300MHz and vsel of 69.
Phone is stable and does not reboot itself.
I've used Droid Overclock an it has worked excellent.

I also recommend Droid Overclock. Very easy to use and the product is great!
I have been using JRUMMYS droid o/c and it worked well on froyo, it still works on GB but doesn't seem to have the same effect as it use to. I still like it for all the other features though. I have tried and tried to use milestone o/c and no matter what the settings it locks up my phone. Not sure why, I guess I am one of the lucky ones that can't o/c my cpu very much.
Thanks for the great responses. I've been experimenting the last few days with Milestone OC and the phone is regularly freezing up, and requires a re-boot. I expected this to go away as I lowered the cpu frequency or raised the voltage, but nothing has worked very well.
I am beginning to suspect launcher pro may be the cause. So I've gone back to the stock launcher and will see if the rebooting problems persist when overclocking.
After the release of Clemsyn's 1.6 GHz Kernel for CM7 based ROMs last night, I immediately switched to it just to see.
But before that I was running Faux123 1.3 GHz.
I'm keeping the Clemsyn kernel for now, simply because I can. My phone can run it with little difficulty thus far and I have a profile to lower the max freq when the CPU gets to a certain temperature. I think I went with about 65 Celsisus.
Before I switched back to CM7 (or rather Neutrino) I was using Wet Dream. I OCed to 1.45 then in attempt to compensate for only half decent webtop performance.
But now I really only do it because I can. Whenever possible, my phone is on the lapdock since I like to HDMI mirror. Battery is not a concern since the lapdock charges the phone and I pretty much always keep the lapdock charger on hand in my bag.
I just thought it would be an interesting subject for the community to discuss as I'm sure it's something that a number of us haven't even thought of and I bet a good number of us fall into the because I can or bragging rights category.
Specific instances of problems OCing helped with in x app or y app might make someone else want to OC whereas someone who doesn't OC might persuade a user like myself to drop it for amazing battery ETC.

Why I DO OC.
Right now I have my Atrix OC'ed at 1.45. I'm currently running Alien ROM Build #4.
The CPU has never gotten past ~55ยบ C.
I also have 2 profiles set
1 for Screen off - 800 MHz max.
1 for Battery< 10% -216 MHz max.
This paired with Alien ROM and LP has left me with a buttery smooth experience.
Is the 1.6 OC kernel worth giving a shot? Or does it make the CPU run excessively hot?
EDIT: I didn't really address battery life. I don't notice a huge decrease in battery life, I'm a pretty heavy user- SMS, Web, Video streaming, Facebook, Twitter. Over all OC'ing is definitely worth it to me.
I like to keep mine overclocked because it seems snapier. I use faux 1.45 and its great. Ive noticed clem's likes to make my phone very hot when running video or games and has actually shut my phone down due to heat. If I run clems I like to drop the overclock with setcpu to around 1.3 so it doesnt shut down but seems to get way hotter than faux's. Anything over 1.5 is just going to cause damage to peoples phones and IMO it should not be used so lightly.
I'm OC'd to 1.45ghz I do it for performance and those random times I need to benchmark I want to try 1.5-6 but I can't seem to get them to boot with the ICS mod2 cm7 so till cm9 or neutrino ill just float about with what I have

No need for 1.6 IMO.
1.3 is plenty for the Atrix. Even Faux 1.0 is fine. Its a phone, not a PC.

i honestly haven't been able to really tell a difference between 1.0 and 1.3GHz in most of my applications. it definitely doesn't help with system slowdown due to live wallpapers, which is a disappointment.

Haha, I was in that boat before I switched to HDMI mirroring coupled with VNC or Splashtop (when applicable) from experience, I can tell why Webtop users want OC. You can turn your phone into such a useful computer, and then it falls flat on its face because the inner-workings aren't streamlined. The extra power DOES help in that situation.
But in my actual experience, I haven't seen many realworld benefits past 1.2.
Especially since 1.6 kept eventually shutting down on me after about an hour (assuming there is the same issue as in Clemsyn 1.5, setting your max to a lower frequency than 1.6 won't stick so my temperature profile wouldn't actually work)
My "because I can" mindset is going to leave me stuck on 1.45 though most likely. I keep it maxed at 1.2(or is it 1.1? I'm not using the kernel right now) and then have a profile to ramp it up to 1.45 when it's on the charger (aka my lapdock)
I don't think it is quite the same for Blur based ROMs, but on CM7 1.0 seems perfectly adequate for the Atrix. Even at it's stock speed, it is snappy.

I dont overclock. I used to be at 1.3ghz, but I didnt see a big enough difference to keep it. At least on CM7, the Atrix is plenty fast on stock speed.
I overclock, but I wait for thoroughly tested kernels before doing so. Right now I'm with faux's v023r @ 1.3 Ghz. I'll try Clemsyn's after its second or third "redesign" or bugfix.
I stick to optimal battery life kernels rather than performance (faux 123 0.2.3 being the one I'm currently on and most likely will be for the foreseeable future)
Also I can't imagine performance possibly getting any quicker or running programs any faster than they already are on the atrix.
Honestly, I never understood why people oc their phone, especially the Atrix. I mean the phone is already fast being that it is 1Ghz dual core. Plus from what I have seen, the Atrix overheats like crazy with the stock frequency so why would you want to increase that even more, so it explodes? I use my phone to mostly play 3D games and I have never encountered any lag or low fps whenever I play games.

Idk I see a difference on any launcher when I flip through pages and through apps. 1.3 or 1.45. But I def notice the difference in snappyness.

95% of the time I overclock I do it for getting awesome benchmark scores that I can admire. 5% of the time I do it when playing 3D games like Fruit Ninja, It seems a lot smoother to me. But I hardly ever do it because it sucks the battery down so fast, so usually I'm at 1ghz. Also it's just kind of cool to see the the potential the phone has when overclocking.
i used faux's kernel to overclock to 1.3 for a few months but i didnt really see any difference except when i run quadrant or how my phone got hotter than stock when under load. another thing that annoyed me with faux's kernel was constantly losing widgets on reboot. i use two batteries so i reboot pretty often.
I used faux 23r 1.4GHz with setCPU profiles.
Profiles clamped speed to 1ghz at cpu temp of 50degc and 800mhz at 60degc.
Most noticeable difference was in k9 mail, indexing and searching were slightly improved.
I ran it so I would get a short boost if the cpu was cold.

On my old and feeble Hero I had to OC, if I wanted it to run fine, however I never felt the need to OC my Atrix. it has so much juice in it without OC, making it useless to squeeze the battery for the extra 0.2-0.5 GHz. Moreover, since we have no real ICS, our CPU runs freely and waste energy for nothing, so OC it will just make it run ever faster for nothing (In Hebrew there is a saying- running full throttle on neutral ).
I used to run Faux123 1.0Ghz kernel just to UV the device, but since I flashed weekly 6 I use the stock kernel, and it runs great, no overheating, and extremely stable (What cannot be said on UV kernels...)
The only time i oc is when using webtop, that extra speed makes a difference. The rest of the its running at 1ghz and seems plenty
