Sky tv on desire HD - Desire HD General

Is it possible to watch like sky tv on my phone?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

Don't think so at present; Sky have said there'll be an Android version of the Sky Go app available "in the coming months", so I guess we're stuck waiting to catch up with the iPhone crowd again.

Do they not relies how much potential an android app would give them.

I know, especially given how many people are asking them for it everywhere. I read rumours on a forum somewhere that the delay was because they weren't happy with the security of streaming video on Android. Not sure if there's any truth to that, especially as Netflix et al seem to be managing it.
They've said it would be this year sometime, so hopefully we get it sooner rather than later. Then we can all move on to complaining about how ridiculous the 2-device limitation is.

I wouldn't hold my breath. I've just received an email promoting Sky Go and it stated that selected Android phone support would be available in the Winter!
I'm so, so disappointed.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

Sky said that the reason they released it for iPhone & iPad and not for Android, is because they find it a lot more difficult to develop an app for Android.
Sky Go on mobile is only available with Sky Sports channels, I wouldn't be surprises if the Android app wasn't released until after this football season
Sent from my Desire HD loaded with MIUI using the XDA Premium App

The reason for the SKy Go app taking so long on android, is the amount of different platforms this will be running on. Remember Android covers all devices not just HTC plus quite a few new tablets. Im sure it will come to us quick enough

Like I said.

I have a slingbox solo, and use it with Virgin TV.
It's brilliant, mostly I use the Slingplayer android app with it - its constantly optimizing quality for your current bandwidth, and with even quite a poor 3g signal I can watch it.
I'm 99% sure you could use this with Sky/Sky+ etc

Get a Slingbox. Had one for years on Winmo and Android and its my #1 app. In fact I have 2 and 2 sky hd boxes so there are no arguments over the remote in my house

The sky go app is now available in the market....However it will only work with certain devices. See the market page for details.

Another possibility would be a receiver like a Dreambox for streaming.

Yeah, DHD is one of the supported devices but it doesn't run on ICS (I can confirm that) and apparently won't work if your device is rooted. I'll try some GB ROMs today to see what happens but I'm not too hopeful. As if Sky hadn't pissed people off enough by taking this long to release it.
Update after a few attempts:
ICS (Ascension) - app won't even open, force closes immediately.
GB cm7 (Absolution 3.7) - app loads, when trying to watch any channel displays a message "your device is not currently supported".
GB sense (ARHD 6.3.2) - app loads, only Sky News channel will stream, all other channels show loading bar staying at 0%.
//sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk; all errors entirely intentional.

Are you running a custom kernel? it looks like the SGII guys are having success with custom ROMs when they have a stock kernel.
I've been looking but I can't find a download link to a stock kernel.

Just about to try Runnydroid v5.0 and I'll have a look in the other forum too

For none Sky subscribers I have a EchoStar HDS-600RS Freesat recorder. It supports android and has a built in slingbox. So you can watch live or recorded TV on your phone tablet or laptop.

Its here and looks like they've got a DHD in the article below (I can't see the video at work)

it was announced as officially going to be released to a few devices at some point. there wasn't anything stated as to when it would be released.
aww.. well is there any kind of work-around?
The hell does anyone want netflix on their phone anyway. That's what my xbox is for...you know, the internet connected device that DOESNT have a 5gb data cap?

There's no HULU app... yet theres a work-around that lets you watch hulu.
It's a question, not a demand asking someone to make a work-around, and also there was a beta going around a few months ago, but a VERY buggy beta. I'm unable to find it.
Nevermind, imageshack sucks.
i tried the ustream work around but the ustream app is ****. now i just use my ipod touch and hotspot my vibrant to it. works great. now what i'm looking for is a throttle fix.
There is no workaround for Netflix on Android. Hulu was relatively easy since 2.2 & higher have adobe flash built-in and Hulu (like the majority of video streaming sites) is flash based. The Android flash player was basically hex edited to fool Hulu into thinking it was a PC and not Android by modifying a text string.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11329624&postcount=81
Netflix on the other hand uses Silverlight platform (Microsoft's answer to Adobe Flash) which doesn't currently exist for Android. Until Netflix finally releases an app or we get Silverlight on Android there is no way to watch Netflix.
Yeah there is a workaround. Download PlayOn from the Market.

I was watching Star Trek from Netflix on my Vibrant tonight using playon, without a hitch.
Give me a link, and I'll tell them what's up.
I wasn't watching trek but I was using netflix through play on. Only problem is you need to be connected to the play on server on computer....still limited though. Netflix isn't on any android devices...not until they figure a proper drm format..no DRM is the only reason it wasn't released when iphone got it.

Once you do the initial WIFI pairing it will continue to work on 3G and other places VIA WIFI. The app syncs to the playon server to get your IP address, if your IP address changes(the one given to you by you ISP) you'll need to re-sync. but I use it out and about all the time on 3G and other peoples WIFI without a problem, just a little slow on the initial startup, but hey it is a beta app.

So I have to stream content from my PC...
WTF is the point?
I'll just watch it on my PC's big screen instead...this really is stupid..If I'm at home why would I watch ANYTHING on my phone's little screen when I can just watch it on my PC or laptop?
I watch sports highlights, Family Guy (Fox.com) etc. on my phone when I'm on the road on 3G..but if I'm home I'm not gonna use my phone when my PC offers a wayyyy better viewing experience.
Playon is a waste of time and money. It would be excellent if it offered Hulu/Netflix WITHOUT having to stream from a PC.

Does anyone but me not mind the lack of streaming videos?

Ok, this is not an iPad vs Xoom debate but...I have in my possession an iPad 2 and a Xoom (perks of my work). I've had the ipad for about 2 weeks and the Xoom for only 2 days so I want to try to be fair but...
I think to myself, let's see how streaming video works on xoom compared to ipad. on ipad:
Netflix app - works great - Xoom - no such app
Hbogo on iPad works great - Xoom - no such app
Vudu on ipad works great - Xoom - no such app
Hulu Plus on ipad works - Xoom - what's hulu?
Just some other things I noticed -
looked for Wall Street Journal app which is great on iPad, but no such app
DirecTV app for iPad has some extra features than the Xoom app
Bank of AMerica App for ipad is nice but no such app for Xoom
Now I know, to each his own and purchase based on your needs but come on! Only thing iPad doesn't seem to do as well to me is flash of course.
Am I missing something?
I am a droid lover, Droid Original then Droid 2, then Droid Incredible etc. all rooted but a bit dissappointed in the feature list for Xoom. Am I alone?

Those of us that have rooted and flashed custom roms like Tiamat l.l have perfect ability to access hbogo, hulu, just about anything via the browser. I use Dolphin HD and the Tiamat rom lets the browser function as a desktop rather than mobile device. And yes, flash is great.
Bottom line...I'm not missing anything and I've got flash.

Hmmm, so, you can do HBOGO and hulu because you are rooted and can load another browser that is capable of running those apps? In other words, it's not the ROM that allows this but the rooted device allowing a different browser that HBOGO works on?

Your point is well taken. But the same list should include all of the sites you CAN stream from due to flash. I believe Netlfix and Hulu are both Silverlight based.
I stream from Amazon all of the time.

+1. Don't have a TV.
Its the same browser (or you can use a different one), its just changing your user agent report to desktop, not android. Hulu is flash, and you can modify flash to also report desktop, not android, and that enables streams. HBO is probably similar. And Netflix will come, as it has a tegra and Netflix/nvidia have said tegras have features for Netflix. Also, you can get play on, which streams from every source under the moon for a few bucks a month extra. And it plays nice with honeycomb.

Re-reading the thread, it came to me that people are really having two very different experiences with the Xoom. There's plain vanilla out of the box, which is nice but lacks some functionality, and the experience of those that have unlocked, rooted and customized their Xoom. The point I was trying to make is that if you're willing to be hands-on, you can have just about all the functions you are looking for.

Now that we have 2.2, what are some killer apps I need?

I mean solely for Android 2.2+. I've already gotten Netflix, Crackle (sadly, doesn't work, the sound goes really, really slow) and a few games I got off of Amazon's deal of the day that were 2.2+ only. There's obviously Flash 10.3, too. The other one I got (which I've been trying to get ahold of since I got my phone) is Kongregate Arcade.

I'm actually working on trying to get the i9000 front facing camera mod to work on our Continuum. I need an i400 I can tear apart and do some fitment testing. I've seen some photos of the i9000 camera and the i500 (Fascinate) camera which I think is the same as the Continuum camera. It might work with a little trimming here and there. Ill post back once I have some results.
This is gonna sound pretty silly but the new Captain America game requires 2.2. I'm not much of a gamer but I actually bought it for $1 in the market and it installed then after the ~150mb download it gave me the error message on my stock Continuum. Took my son to the movie and we loved it, was looking forward to letting him play the game(which was well reviewed). Bah.
So happy to see this 2.2 update stuff. I'm going to have to do my homework now and make a visit to the darkside. I love this phone, will be more than happy to de-bing and de-bloat it!

I've been watching various threads on this one for weeks. I'm hopeful that Amazon will release an app for the rest of us soon given that 1) they just released an app for Google TV, and 2) they make most of their money from media, not Kindle hardware....so I'm hoping the speculation that they are limiting it to the Kindle for competitive reasons, is false.
The only way I've been able to watch Amazon VOD is by loading flash and using Firefox. It works, but it is FAR from ideal.

Understood....I guess my point was more that they are still releasing android apps, even though there is speculation out there that they want to limit android access to the Kindle. A while back there was the same speculation about iDevices, but now we have both an iPad and iPhone/Pod app. I'm hopeful we'll have one soon....
I hope someone figures this out soon.

I am on the 30 day free trial of Amazon Prime, and my clock is ticking.
I won't stay with Prime unless it can replace Netflix for streamed movies.

Amazon's selection of free stuff to stream isn't as extensive as Netflix, I've found. At least not in what I like to watch. They do, however, have a lot of things that Netflix doesn't have. We split a Prime membership with my brother but I don't intend on getting rid of our Netflix or even Hulu+ memberships just yet.
