After updating my HTC Desire with the GB, Today i received a Skype update and I can make video calls using the back camera, tried several calls and it works well in Wlan.

But you would have to keep flipping your phone over to see the other person which kind of defeats the object of video calls. I'm surprised the camera works because the phone models Skype have introduced the video calling for are having problems and the desire wasn't included in the roll-out because of the fact it doesn't have front-facing camera.

would you be kind enough to post the apk?
thanks

Desire was rolled out in the official Skype release today. Screenshot from the market attached.
I'm still on your train of thought though, pretty pointless having a Skype video conversation when you have to stand in front of a mirror to do it.

Hmmm, another pointless addition to Skype. I use Skype daily and stick to an older version (1.0.0.983) because it's the most stable and the UI is the most user friendly. It was the last version released prior to the video calling releases but it's still not perfect. Since Microsoft took over Skype they appear to be doing some ridiculous things...like adding video calling to phones that don't have front facing cameras

the update doesn't have video for me...running miui latest version which is GB

I got a Desire with Cyanogenmod 7.1 (Gingerbread). When i start the video I got a blank (black) screen on my side and on my caller's side as well (at least he can see his camera, the phone doesn't show even that)... :/
Sometimes I got also a FClose and one time my phone self rebooted...

doesn't work for me neither. Can't find the option to enable it.

I enjoy having the option of video calling different people different uses I guess... maybe you are on vacation and want to show someone the view from your hotel room.
Skype still feels heavy though and I keep turning it off when I'm not using it. Hopefully after a while it will be as light as google talk and viber, and it can be kept up and running all the time
...or even better - hopefully google talk will be good enough to replace Skype. hope google releases google voice for the rest of us not-Americans soon too...
the app "stop Skype" broke with the latest update btw. too bad, was great easy way to exit Skype.

hi wonder if anyone used video on skype with ther mobile network(not wifi) wondered if you have good quality tmobile uk doesnt seem to work

tested and works fine on my Desire. Rooted with cm7 . i enjoy this option, even without a front facing camera, because i only used videocalls for broadcasting "what i see" to other connected collegues.
works like a charm

i don't have video calling with the new Skype and when i try phone call the signal is very bad

2.1 over 1.6 benefits

Maybe I'm missing something but I've been reading change logs for Android 2.1 vs 1.6 and I don't really see what the big deal is.
Aside from someone posting that the battery life was a "zillion times better" I don't see anything that is going to improve my phone. Most of what's offered in 2.1 I've already gotten via 3rd party apps for 1.6.
Glad to hear about the "zillion times better" though, throwing out all of my chargers now Assuming most of us would place the fictitious "zillion" somewhere near a trilllion that would mean the battery should last 2.73790926 × 10^9 years. I'll probably change phones before charging again.
Seriously though, what does 2.1 really bring that the market apps don't?
more apps are supporting 2.0/2.1 and above only
Do me a favour and go install the official Twitter app on your phone. I'll wait.

Hmmm I can't seem to install twitter. I wonder w... oh riiiight. 1.6.
More app compatibility plus faster OS plus better battery. No wonder we can't wait eh?
Well, some just don't know what they're missing until they've tried it.

Twitter sucks
Anyways, for me, the main thing would be more apps would be compatible with the phone! I've been dieing to try LauncherPro!
Another thing that was promised with the update was 720p Recording, and Live Wallpapers (which is also something else that i am excited for)!
Plus
- Full range of colors: 1.6 only has 65000 colors (16-bit), you can see the banding very visible in pictures and movies. With 2.1 we get full 16 million colors.
- Improved BT stack: with 2.1 we will be able to see contact and song names in the displays of our bundled MW600 headsets
Hopefully they've also finally addressed the low in-call volume issue.

I can see 720p recording as a useful addition.
The offical twitter app isn't that good to me. I have tried and last I had it it would always load at the top of the list. Boo third party apps like seesmic and twitdeck have had this fuction for months. I do want to see the display difference in 2.1

AS to the colors I'm not really that excited but I don't really use the X10 for video. If you're a mobile video watcher then I can see why the video enhancement would be something to look forward to.
BT stack improvements would be welcomed but until I can BT voice dial I still won't be thrilled.
Funny thing about that in-call volume. When I use Google Voice the in-call volume is much much better ... no idea why.

BTW you know what's better than Twitter? Google Buzz.
That way, I can not only be inundated by useless thoughts I can also know exactly where they had the useless thought ... sweet.
So far:
Improved colors = useful for some to be sure.
720p video recording = I may use it from time to time.
Newer apps = Depends on what they do but I'm pretty happy with my 100 apps.
Improved BT stack = Yup but still want BT voice dial.
Better battery = Hard to really say unless someone with an X10 is running 2.1
Speed = Pretty fast already.
Twitter = No thanks.
Facebook = No thanks.
Social networking in general = No thanks (I actual reality network
My point wasn't to insult those waiting for 2.1 it was an honest question, "Am I missing something?". The improvements listed, for me, won't get me to upgrade.

Twitter .. enough said already.
Are you really sure there is going to be a great battery improvement? Until 2.1 is running on the X10 you won't know for certain.
I do know that my extended battery has reallly worked out for me. I use the phone for all it's worth (except twitter) and I can go 14 hours and still have 60% remaining.

Yes, my only true desire.
I hope it works well with Google Voice since I have the option set to ask me if I want to use GV or a normal call. Guess I'll find out if 2.2 comes out from SE or the devs.

Tango needs Nexus One Beta testers.

Hi,
I work for Tango - the newest player in mobile video calling. Hopefully some of you have been able to play around with our app.
We released our application last week, and have been listening to users on some of the items we need to fix/improve with our application.
I am looking for 5-10 Nexus One users that can help me out with beta testing our product.
The requirements:
1. You have a Nexus One and feel comfortable installing Beta software on your phone.
2. You can devote 2-3 hours every few weeks to provide us feedback.
3. You feel comfortable having a video call with me (I promise I'm not that scary).
4. You will not share new features with our competitors.
I would prefer to find people who can test this weekend - we have a big fix regarding our battery consumption that we would like to release ASAP.
Please message me with the following:
1. Name/Email
2. Availability to test over the next few months
3. Experience with Android
4. Phone/Version/Rooted? etc.
Thanks!
Dmitry
Is a PC version in the works?
We're still working on getting Tango to be the best mobile-to-mobile video calling app before we move on to PC/Mac, but it's in the works.
Won't be much of a video call without a front facing camera, will it?
Tango Beta Testers...
I'd be curious to know how Tango works with the Nexus One as well... it has no camera on the front, so this makes video calling problematic (at best).
Is there something I'm missing?

Maybe they include a "mirror" link....LOL couldn't pass up the pun. Seems you would have to hold a mirror behind the N! to have you face reflect.
I was just using Tango with one of my friends... it works fine! The other person can't see your face, but they already know what you look like anyways Pretty cool, nice app!

Wait, what good is mobile video calling if the other person can only see your shoes? Who cares what your shoes look like. If I am going to video call you, I want to see you, not your Borns.

drivers dont mean **** if you have to install the actual hardware lol...
1. where are you going to find a small camera to install
2. how do you know where to put it? Its not like you can open your nexus and there are a few empty pins that say "solder front-facing camera here"... lol
3. it has drivers great... but for which camera? i am willing to bet that there are more than one versions of front facing cameras out there...
a project like that just screams disaster

wonder if it's no support for SGS 2.1 though, as Skype didn't work with 2.1, but with 2.2 works perfect.
maybe someone should give it a try.
i installed it with tayutama's superlite jpm.
call disabled
it works with video, couldn't find a option for call only, no video
Ah i forgot, it uses back camera for video
It says clearly that Video requires Android 2.2+ and there's no support for Galaxy S.
Almost 10 million galaxy s devices sold and they can even get it to work on it. Why can all other smaller companies with less resources and money do it, eg tango, qik, fring.
Tried on Galaxy S. FFC not working, though. We have to use the back camera for video. It's cumbersome, if not impossible, to type and show your face at the same time

Even without the video-add on, its a very bulky app. Its slow. Freezes. Not easy to use with such speed. Skype better.
The iPhone app on the other hand works like a charm using both cameras and calling to PC
Android maybe a good OS but the ****ty support makes me want to puke
A bit useless since it does not support the front cam.

[Q] Fring Video Chat

Does any one know how to get fring to use the FFC... it seems to only wanna goto the back one and I cant find anything in the settings.
I too have this same issue. Any help would be great! Went to their website but no help.

Same problem here too. I ended up downloading Tango from the market and after about a minute of setup I was making video calls with slightly better quality and the ability to switch cameras on the fly.

Record using the front facing camara

Now, I have the Tab and I couldn't help but notice the default camera program only lets you take pics with the front facing camera and not record video with it. So I was wondering if their was like an app for this or some tinkering with the software and what that could be done to get this working?
I think you can do that with the Qik video chat program, but I haven't really tinkered around with it

Yea, it sucks. I mean I don't understand. I mean in theory the Tab's FFC should be able to record video, but this is not the case at all.
I tried the Qik app and it is working for me for front-facing recording. I had the T-Mo version when I first got my Tab that sometimes froze, but went to the Qik site and got an update that worked much better. Haven't had any problems with it yet.
