HTC releasing details on how they will unlock phones. - EVO 4G General

http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-w...b-based-tool?utm_source=ac&utm_medium=twitter
New devices will continue to ship with locked bootloaders.
HTC will allow bootloaders to be unlocked using a web-based tool.
This month, you'll see an update to the the non-U.S. version of the HTC Sensation, with the T-Mobile U.S. to follow shortly thereafter. The EVO 3D will follow the HTC Sensation. This update won't actually unlock the bootloader -- it'll lay the groundwork for doing so.
The actual bootloader unlocking will take place via a web tool. You'll have to give HTC an e-mail address and acknowledge that you know what you're doing and promise not to complain when you brick your phone.
You'll plug your phone into a computer with the Android SDK loaded, then type in a device ID token, which you'll receive by e-mail, into the web tool.
Then the unlocking process will begin.

as for htc?
i couldnt give three hoots how they decide to do it, revolutionary does the exact same thing without voiding your warranty, ,and you can roll it back to take it in and they are none the wiser, who in their right mind interested in unlocked bootloaders is going to do this?
i literally almost lol out of just how sad that is , you should check out the comments of people, its hilarious
i am dam sure evo will get hacked without the need for this voidyourwarrantybs, the rooting community will beat htc to the punch for this, and for future phones, even the photon got rooted already and that things got an encrypted bootloader, the monkeys at htc can blow all the smoke they want, this is nothing but a Publicity stunt

Check this out. agrabren is still working on root for og evo. http://bit.ly/oG0UUm

sounds to me like there using the "tool" that was made by unrevoked and alpharevx to do so !!! just saying that its what it sounds like since i just rooted the 3vo

This seems like a less than ideal solution, but at least they're going through with it.

My Theory: HTC leaves the Evo4G locked to drive sales to newer unlocked phones. It's a good strategy.

It's possible.
But considering the fact that full root has been achieved on the newer devices, I would bet dollars for donuts that root on the Evo will be very soon.

I am confident in the dev's that are working on the root for the Evo 4G ..
One of the main guys said they're almost there, I trust those guys ...

HTC is going to make sure that every update they make closes down on all exploits. Who knows, the next 3D update may be unrootable or could take months to figure out.
I can see a future where root = no warranty, possibly no insurance.

Sucks for them that due to this Act they can't kill the warranty just because you do something software based doesn't it?
If my USB port fails, it's not because of my ROM.
As much as they might try in court anyone would win that.

Bootloaders should never be locked anyhow. That's like buying a new house but not getting the keys to it. Wtf! If its MY phone , make me believe its MY phone by allowing me to do what I want with it. Long as warranty still covers manufacturers' defects I could care less if I brick it.

That's going to be a issue. HTC could potentially wait for you to take them to court for a claim on a rooted phone. The burden will be on you to prove that the rooting of the phone did not cause whatever problem you are having.

I don't know why anyone got their hopes up. Htc never even hinted that they would root the og evo. They first said they would unlock future devices, then they included the 3vo and sensation. Now they have pretty much confirmed that all new devices will come with locked bootloaders and you will have to jump through their hoops for the unlock.
They only care about appeasing some with this crap while they lock down devices tighter and tighter.
Don't worry about the evo. People wanna root the hot new device. now that that is done those talented individuals will take care of the og crowd. Communities take care of their own.
@jayare313
More like buying a house and the basement is bolt locked and the breaker box, water heater, and septic tank cover are all down there. You own the house but if something goes wrong you gotta call and ask permission for a repair.

If you'd rather not support your product if someone else meddles with it, that's totally fine. Void their warranties; don't kill your own product to spite them.

It is fairly easy to jailbreak an iphone these days... my dad jailbroke his 3gs a few days after he got it and he is the guy who's VCR always flashed 12:00...
It's all fear mongering. It's the same protection as Milestone devices and the Droid. All of them have the OMAP3 eFuse.
Look up Steven Bird's blog (I can't post links yet) he explains it. Said that it's more than likely not to brick the phone. He's got donations up and going now to try and get one to test it himself.
Yup, this FUD has been debunked. Enough with the eFuse DROID X Talk Already
The response from Motorola was that it wouldn't "brick" the phone, but if the efuse was triggered it would render the phone unusable until it was repaired with motorola software. Which pretty much means the folks here at XDA will likely find a way around the efuse without too much trouble

Or they could, I dunno, download it from Motorola's site. Really, all they're doing is a checksum and giving you the opportunity to flash an RUU if they don't match. No Moto repair required.
Wow Motorola, way to go... u just scared off about 3/4 of u'r customers right there. Talk about BS limiting a user on what he/she is able to load on to HIS/HER own phone. Ridiculous!
It's not FUD. It may not "brick" the phone, but it's another attempt to stop the end user, the person that legally purchased the phone, from tinkering with it. Just as the quote I posted above says, they're not inventors. They are profiteers afraid of people, at home, doing what they do better than them.
My friend and I had this conversation the other day. He stated that Sprint has a right to protect their network and any phone they sell you with a discount for buying a plan. He is correct, to a point. Sprint doesn't want us using our phones for more than they give us (despite claims of "unlimited" data) because they have to protect their profit margins. They also don't want us tinkering with our phones because we, tinkerers, could break them. Insurance doesn't cover "tinkering". Sprint is taking a huge up-front hit by selling us the phone as cheap as they do but they recoup that cost by locking us into 2-year contracts. They need to keep us in those contracts to turn a profit. So, I feel they have a right to protect that until the contract is up.
Or, on the other hand, those that purchase their phones outright, without contracts and without subsidies, should have the right to tinker all they like... including the consequences.
E-fuse, what?
I still don't believe it was FUD because of the reasons I mentioned above, but it was successfully bypassed.
EDIT: The e-fuse wasn't bypassed. They got root, which isn't watched by the e-fuse. Putting a new ROM on the phone would, though. Getting root is a start, though, and should allow them to figure out how the e-fuse works. Then I'm sure they can bypass it. It'll just take some more time.

[Q] ROOT?

I love my Evo. Main reason? Personalization, flashing custom roms, flashing fonts, etc. My knowledge of development ain't that great though and I'm wondering from those "in the know": Do you think we'll access root and be able to flash custom roms?
For me, this is the best tablet b/c it runs android. I don't mind the price, I just want to be able to do what I want to the device Opinions?
I wouldn't doubt it. In fact, I expect it. I don't think there are any android devices that haven't been rooted. Just have to give it time once it's released.

Whats the deal with the locked bootloader on some Moto devices? I hear the term but I'm not familiar with what it means (EVO owner). I assumed it had to do with not being able flash ROM's and/or root. Can anybody explain?

That's about all it is. They shut down any access to the loader which means you can get around to install anything. Most of motos new phones are this way. Its a kick in the nards but it protects their hardware from stuff like overclocking and burning out stuff. And of course the occasional brick.
I hate it but I see the point. And I can see the xoom being locked....little expensive for them to have to keep taking back because a new rooter f'ed theirs up.
Hmmm. Though I don't see custom ROMs being as necessary, that actually gives me a touch of pause. I don't like to think that the life of the device can't be extended if Motorola created a XOOM 2 or something.

I don't think the hardware spec as is will get outdated anytime soon.
Well..outdated yes, regress into unusable for web, video and apps.. certainly not.
The device per the data sheet will still run things quite well as we know them now for a very long time.
Only thing yet to be really proven is how teg2 can handle intensive 3d functions in 'real world' scenarios.. and if you think Crysis will be better played on a tablet I have a bridge for sale.

I know the hardware won't be outdated, I'm talking about all the obsolete android phones because their OEMs abandoned them and they never got FroYo. I think if it ends up being locked down I might have to utilize Best Buy's new return policy on the 28th day.

Shame on you for talking to BB employees about anything technical. No hate, but most of them are morons.
It just makes me laugh when I talk to people like that. Being an electronics technician I do it sometimes just to see what chunks of stupid come out of their mouths.
Since the Xoom is intended to be the reference development tablet platform by Google, it should be easy to root and has an easy to unlock bootloader, just like the Nexus One and Nexus S.
That being said, Motorola is Motorola... so they may do their usual Motorola thing and encrypt everything up. But I think the chance that the Xoom is easy to mess around with is pretty high.

Same with me. Infact im not even sure im going to get the damn thing. They were so unorganized and unprepared. I NEVER go on websites and do the ratings but for this i did. It was a horrible experience trying to get this thing pre ordered. 3 of the techs had to talk to each other to figure out what i was asking for. I didnt think the statement "i would like to pre order the motorola xoom" was all that confusing. I never shop at best buy but being as inpatient as i am i took the risk to get my hands on this thing as fast as possible. I just hope i get a call once they come in. As it looked im going to be the only call they have to make.
Did anyone else get a copy of their preorder or just a receipt?

All I got was the receipt and the gift card as well. Got to our BB ~1300 to place the order and was the first to actually place an order, as opposed to people asking questions about it. Course our BB is in a town of ~50,000 (metro area ~150,000) so I was a little concerned they would even get any in for Thursday, they say they are indeed due in this week.
Did see the preorder paperwork she filled out.
Like above, they didn't know what they were looking for. The girl found it without too much wait though.

It will never happen. The backlash would just be too much to handle.
And if manufacturers were to begin implementing these types of lockdowns, you know for a fact that they'll just be hacked around sooner or later.
Hello? We are discussing this on XDA... Home to undoubtedly the best group of white hat device hackers I've seen.
We all assume risk when rooting our devices and given the more open nature of Android, there's always the concern that some application will start stealing your data. It's a risk I'm willing to take and I'm sure most everyone else here as well.

Here's the problem with what you stated, the percentage of users rooted compared to non rooted, well are not even close, if they did lock out every new phone with master keys that we would never be able to figure out, well it could happen. Even if they did lose every rooted users support financially, they would still have more than 95 percent of their profiT, that's my fear, it'll hurt but not if sprint, Verizon, etc pays the difference or that kind of sort of thing. For example to make it easy, say all rooted user cause 600,000 in lost profit for sprint that they could have potentially gained, well HTC goes hey well lock the device but we want the difference from the users like us who will not purchase the phone. Anyway that's my take on it, enlighten me with your guys thoughts
It may be time to dust off my Razr.
Carriers get smart, devs get smarter......lets not jump the gun and worry about this nonsense now. I will enjoy my rooted phone for now. If this does go down those of you saying you will go to "dumbphones" are full of it. Even if these phones are locked down tighter than a 17 year old girls tuna you will still use it. I see the future as phones will be so fast why would you need to root; I love to root, I've been rooting ALL my phones since g1 and the sole purpose was the speed my phone up. Dual core phone no root ehh who cares. I will NOT use a free phone just because these phones in the future will possibly be locked. One can only hope this security doesn't see light but if it does I'm sure we'll be ok.

I've heard the "rooted users are the extreme minority" comment countless times, and all logic says it really must be true.
However, when I go to the market, click apps, then all applications, then click top paid, 3 of the top 5 require root. As an honest question, are my market results tailored for my usage history or is that the same "top paid" list everyone sees? If it is indeed the same for everyone then it becomes much harder to quantify rooted users being in the minority.

Completely agree about the smartphone part but do not about the master key part, it would take years like 75 - 100 if the key is properly secure for many and I mean many super computers to solve that algorithm...look at the droids, the only reason on a side note the ps3 master key was released was because the people who secured it messed up in the formula, and that still took 5 years..
the consequence would never be the same.

I am a little curious how it would affect them. I have no doubt that most of us loyal Evo users have pushed our friends and family to purchase HTC phones. My wife wanted the Epic but I urged her to get the Evo Shift due to the difference in quality and history of software updates. I have friends who now have the Evo because of my input.
I have to imagine that we do have the power to make a difference in HTC's sales but is it enough to matter to them?

Sprint is the ONLY carrier that is doing ANYTHING to support openness so I'm really not sure what in the world you're talking about.
This signed bootloader BS is pure HTC.
Just saw this. If they listen, I might get the 3D, otherwise its back to an iPhone, because really, what's the different without root? Not much.

Sprint could care less whether you can hack tethering or not. They are pushing the air cards anyways. My account manager told me this today.
You guys act like HTC/Sprint need the dev community to stay afloat. Truth is we make up less than 1% of their sales and the only reason we are heard at all is because we put forth much more effort and have a lot more knowledge than the common user.
In all reality HTC can make a completely unlock-able/uncrackable boot loader and their sales will take absolutely no significant hit...It sucks, but it's reality and it's the way it is...
This is still very good news and i'm happy to hear that HTC is at least hearing us out, no matter how insignificant we may be...Or maybe they just realize that no matter what they do, our devs are better than theirs and can crack anything they try to lock in due time so the effort they put forth to lock us out isn't really worth it...

i bet the bean counters are looking over whether or not pissing off the dev community will cause excessive loss on the consumer end...
if it doesnt affect the bottom line, htc wont do a thing

Might as well expand your consumer base as much as you can. The other 99% who don't root their phones don't really care if the bootloader is locked or not. With an easily unlockable bootloader, that 1% that does root their phones can grow. Devs are smart, and HTC could take some hints from them.
they may change their bootloader policy in future phones, not the 3d which is about ready to ship.
Yeah, their response is stock customer service response..
of COURSE their listening. Of COURSE they're considering. Of COURSE they care.
I think, I KNOW... there is absolutely ZERO chance they will change their course of action publicly.
It might however increase the chance of some leak happening tho......pleeaase!

Ya good luck with that. Why would they want to make it easier for you to access the phones bootloader? Unless they are going to sell it with no warranty. I mean really that's like buying a new car taking the motor apart putting it back together with different parts then expecting the manufacture to pick up the bill when it all goes bad. They aren't going to do it no matter how much you beg for it. Even the person trying to make the petition understands the reason for them not doing it. To sell more phones. The general public doesn't mess with or care to mess with their phones they want it to turn on and just work. So what maybe 2% really care to tinker with their phones. Ya don't think they are going to do what your asking for even 10 or 20% of their customer base.
Would it be nice sure..I like to play with my phones and thanks to place like this site I can. I just don't see it happening anytime soon. They are only going to get more and more locked down.

Hi,
Does that include the upcoming EU Sensation??
no not at the moment. here in germany the sensation is already available and locked. maybe they will open it up some time but for now this is just for future phones excluding the evo 3d. think this also will come with loced bootloader and maybe it will be possible to unlock it some time.

Check out the good news as stated here : http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/26/htc-officially-dissolves-locked-bootlader-policy/
HTC have announced that locked bootloaders will be no more!
Good news. I wonder if they are going to unlock existing bootloaders?
Great news \o/

Hey congrats I guess. Can't complain about them doing it. It's just something you would think they wouldn't want to do. I was proven wrong and I have no problem saying.
Not trying to piss in anyone's Cheerios, but they probably didn't see nor care about an online petition, especially with only 7000 sigs. That's a drop in the ocean.
Trust me, a company like HTC isn't going to make such an announcement on a whim, it's gonna go through the company ranks for pros/cons, profit projections, etc... The idea would have started internally in HTC well before anyone set up that petition.
It would be interesting to see their true reasons for the decision. I highly doubt it's for "the betterment of the community". They have to think it will increase profits.
Either way, works out great for us. Now all they need to do is open up their drivers, etc.. and we'd be set.
well why have they started locking them now with the sensation and evo 3d?
have you read the post on facebook? i don't think this was a marketing thing and i don't think that they would have locked it up again if nobody complained.
Great news! The best part is that they really listen to people.
