LOL... here we go again !
You're in the Acer A500 forum and asking the above question ??
That's like me seeing you driving a Mercedes and asking you if you chose the Benz over the BMW
... better put on a flame suit ...LOL
I know everyone here has the Acer, my question was who was down to choosing between the two and why the went with the Acer? Sorry for the confusion.....

I think also it's good to someone know what is better
If I go to BMW I ask
what you got better than MERCEDES... sell me your product
ok
- Asus
Better screen but got some light leaking...
More battery but overweighted (with keyboard 1.2kg arround but 16 Hours of battery... hu...)
Keyboard... well can be usefull sometimes and that serve as a dock so...
Nice weather stock widget ( I love it)
Less bloatware (maybe)
after I can't tell
ACER
all in one : USB, hdmi, sdcard
battery 8 hours (normal usage, game a little, wifi etc...)
FULL USB.... plug a little hub and you got mouse (3.1), keyboard, and also.... HardDrive 1TB(maybe 2TB max) can be plug in...
DOLBY that sound is great.
stronger material... my opinion.

Also Acer has flash for rear camera and manual lock for screen rotation. I was thinking if I wanted a tablet to look like a netbook I would have just picked up a netbook, it would be alot cheaper...

Opinion...yes.... but not coming to someone's domain and ask if other were better.
Let me drop by your house and post the question to you like:
is your house better or the one down the street better ?
Your reaction would be ?
maybe I was "playing" on the OP's wording of the question
alright... back on topic... and I'm staying far away from this thread...starting now

I did. my friends recommend transformer because of its popularity, so I went to store and played with the sample, it looks ugly. here are some reasons I picked a500:
1. for $30 more you get 32G and a case
2. metal case, looks solid and for sure a little bit heavier
3. nice design, in my opinion it is the most beautiful android tablet. I compared asus, fujitsu and toshiba, cosmetically, a500 is the best
4. I love the usb port, mouse, keyboard, u-disk, you name it.
my only complain is that it doesn't do usb charging. well, others don't do it either.
besides, you can get it from costco, if you don't like it, take it back. costco.com also sells other tablets, but they are all over priced in my opinion.
I just got the Acer because of the USB port. Right now target has them for 399 and somewhere around the a500gb is a coupon for $50 off tablets @ staples. I believe you can have them price check targets price can use the coupon. Transformer has a better screen but the acers USB can come handy. I love my new a500!
Can't find the post but here's the coupon: http://reg.e.staples.com/c/s/tagfrm/hBOHH28B7SHGCB8cS0jNsq8x311/coupon.html?storeId=10001&AID=10428703&CID=AFF%253A552179%253A552179%253A10428703&cm_mmc=CJ-_-552179-_-552179-_-10428703&SID=VGg5cWlnb0JDalFBQUdAbEdmQUFBQU11&PID=552179&n=550
Act quick because coupon expires today.

I actually had a Transformer and returned it for the Acer. Most reviews do seem to come out in favor of the Transformer, but if you read between the lines, it is always the keyboard dock that tilts it in the Transformers favor. Putting a battery in the dock to extend the battery life is a great idea. Unfortunately, based on what I read, it doesn't work. When the tablet is docked to the keyboard, it doesn't go into a deep sleep, which drains the keyboard battery. Asus does say they will fix it. You need to consider if the keyboard is worth it, over a bluetooth keyboard you could get for the Acer.
The reasons I returned my Transformer was the screen leakage problem, and the fact that the left speaker is noticeably quieter than the right. These are both very common problems. The speaker thing really annoyed me. It wouldn't matter so much if it was just one mono speaker, but with one speaker being quieter, you will actually be missing audio.
I do like the USB slot on the Acer, as well as having a cover for the microSD card. On the Asus, I believe the card sticks out of the tablet, and is easily ejected. The power supply for the Acer is also better. I found the 30 pin connector for the Asus on the bottom to be awkward when trying to use the tablet when charging.
movie playback
Hey guys this thread is helpful, thanks. I was leaning towards the transformer because of some of the video playback issues (not being able to play). The Transformer had no issues playing along side, here's the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyTXevfSIVk
Fast forward to 07:00
So my question is has this been resolved or is this still an issue?
Thanks guys!
Also, has anyone tried doing the Skype Video Chat? What's the experience/quality like? Will a Bluetooth headset (like a standard Jawbone) work with it? How's the Bluetooth Audio quality (assuming its capable)? I would like to use a wireless headset (stereo).
Thanks again!
The better speakers full usb on the tablet and it looks nice. besides that all the tablets have the same tegra cpu so not like your losing anything performence wise
Had 3 transformers, all with serious light bleed round the edges. Got sick of exchanging it so went for the acer and very glad I did.
Not really anything to choose on the screen, but for me, build quality is better and you have the advantage of full size usb.
On the down side it cost a little more (especially here in rip-off britain), but on the plus side, I ordered the keyboard for the transformer direct from asus when it first came out for 50 quid and sold it on flea-bay for 130 - result
Go to transformer forum and ask the same question.good luck
I have an Acer Iconia a501 and an Asus Transformer TF101 (won with BINGO!) here and put them side by side.
For colors, Asus is my favourite, colors are warmer and colors seems to be more deep and natural; the Acer produces washed out colors in comparison. Green grass on the Asus is light-green (onnatural) grass on the Acer.
The Asus screen is an IPS type and doesn't got the weird honeycomb pattern seen the Acer as bright pixels in sunlight and under certain angles; has something to do with their touchscreen tech in the display.
The Asus' dock with keyboard is a nice gadget but if I looked for this I'll be sticking with my 'old' Asus EeePC I have.
I choose the Iconia in favor of the Asus for these reasons:
- full USB and micro usb support on tablet itself
- hardware rotation lock switch
- 3G model is already on the market (got one!)
- The brushed alu look cover is very nice and sturdy
- back camera with led flash (quite bright!)
- few paid and full games included
Although I won the damn thing, the Asus is going bye-bye... because:
- No USB and micro USB support on tablet itself
- only software rotation lock (3 clicks too many!)
- 3G model is to be expected in August or even September!
- Case is nice to see, but it feels kinda plasticy.
- No flash with camera.
- No including games (even though they're only cost couple of $$)
Asus' screen wins (IMHO) over the Acer screen because it produces warmer colors and has more dedicated colors (262K vs 16M), the Acer uses 'dithering' instead.
But as in many things, you can't twist about someones personal taste.

Hit the nail on the head with that.
I bought the Acer because I had some gift cards to HSN to use up and at the time, they didn't have the transformer. I had considered sending the Acer back now that they have the transformer but the Acer has won me over. I'm not sure I could get by without the USB right on the tablet. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse that are amazingly plug and play. I also have a 3G dongle which also works.
I love to connect the hdmi out to my TV and use the wireless mouse and keyboard to surf the internet, watch movies and play games from across the room.

New Iconia A500 Owner
I just bought an A500 over the Asus for a few reasons.
1) The recent price drop here in the US to $399 along with a $50 gift card from Target stores made the $550 price of the Asus a non starter.
2) I own an Asus laptop and it has had poor build quality and miserable support, so the current issues with power drain on the dock and light bleed made me leery of Asus.
3) The 40-pin power/dock connector makes me really nervous about long term reliability and there aren't any replacements currently available.
Now in fairness to the Transformer, there are some pluses compared to the Acer
Slightly sharper display
nice feel of the back(less slippery)
More USB ports when docked
Longer battery life(when docked)
but I just couldn't justify a $200 delta for the Asus...
I totally killed my Acer tablet. The extended warranty company is refunding my money as it would be cheaper than fixing it.
My question is, should I stay with Acer or go for the Xoom? The mic on the Acer sucked, and I use it for college. It would be great to be able to record and take notes. I did love my Acer with a standard USB slot, the Xoom has a micro USB.
Any recommendations?(besides ipad)

1. Nobody here @ XDA is going to tell you to get an iPad, I promise
2. Wait a couple weeks. If you have extra money to spend, the new Tegra 3 devices are coming out, mainly the Asus Transformer Prime and later some unnamed Acer devices. Otherwise, the price is going to drop on all current Tegra 2 devices starting with black Friday / cyber Monday sales.
3. From my research, the Xoom and Iconia have almost identical specs, but the Iconia has the USB. If the mic presents a big problem, use a wired one and take the USB, IMHO. Especially for college, plugging in an inexpensive USB keyboard should be very helpful.
I haven't personally had much time with a Xoom, but I can't imagine anything could make it excel in enough ways to replace a full size USB (for me at least).
Good luck with your decision, hope I helped a bit.
Thanks for the reply. I believe you are right, the zoom fails without a full USB. What kind of mic do I get? Is it a USB mic? I think I am going to stick with Acer. Its funny. The guys at the zoom forum dumped on the Acer. I reminded them they were the same specs. The full USB is awesome!

I like the a500 enough that I bought one for my wife, now we have 2.

What is a good rom for this tablet?
This will depend on how "cooked" you want your rom.
For really cooked, you can try Taboonay or Honeyvillian. Both are good and used by many.
For a little less cooked, try Harkon or Lightspeed.
All of the afore mentioned have OC capability. You can also change out Kernels for a little better performance based on what you are looking for.
And for a really good one for the 500, goto www.tegraowners.com and try Thor's Roms or Kernels. Really sweet for the 500. He's the guy who put together the recovery for the 500/501, for without, we wouldn't have such an easy time flashing!!
Unfortunately, I run the 501, so mine has to have support for internal 3g, so choices are limited.

The Thinkpad tablet has a full size USB as well. Not sure about the keyboard but based on the Thinkpad track record, its likely better than the Acer one. If you want better bang for your buck though stick with the Iconia as it is quite a bit cheaper.

Good move! I'm running Thor as well, totally happy with it. He's working pretty hard on an ICS build right now, can't wait!
The ICS rom is actually running quite well, but, it's not a daily driver. But it looks ok for an ASOP alpha and runs stable.
The real meat, will come when Acer/Samsung/Asus releases some ICS source for their new tabs. Like the a701. Like HW acceleration and Gpu acceleration.
Things will definitely be rocking!!!
And I'm betting Thor, will have the first rom.

Rotation lock is only feasible if you're riding a roller coaster.

I believe you needed to be running a custom ROM to connect to an ad hoc network, such as your phones hot spot. Not sure why/how, but I do remember reading that.

there was so much hype about the keyboard when it came out and i had a thread in august or july about how it is totally overpriced at $150 and i thought $108-115 was a reasonable MSRP.
now that im typing on it, it really isnt that great. the keys are pretty cramped and i'm used to my mechanical keyboard so i keep missing keystrokes, thinking the keys will activate halfway down the stroke. instead of having to bottom them out. if the chicklet keys were more crisp it would be more tolerable but they are squishy and there is no definitive bottom out lol
cringing while i type this, anyone want to buy it?
and the reason im making this thread is because people ridiculed me for like 6 pages about how it's the best thing ever and they would pay 200 for it LOL
I could steal it....
Just messing, it is just like any new keyboard takes a bit of getting used to.
Saying that with it sat on the sofa as I type adding to the bounce probably pressed delete 10 times typing this out after making mistakes.
Honestly though you do get used to it and I use it all the time typing long emails or even creating quotes at work etc.
How long you had it ?
How much you willing to sell it for?
For typing long e-mails, this keyboard is much better than using the soft keyboard. It's definitely not perfect and if it were just a keyboard, I'm not sure I would have bought it but it also has a nice high capacity battery and that makes it better than any other keyboard on the market for tablets.
However it has 2 big issues for me:
1) Touchpad is way too sensitive forcing me to turn is off while I type.
2) Keys must be slammed on to complete a keystroke. Literally I feel like I'm driving down on each stroke which makes typing slower and more cumbersome.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Yep, definitely, the only downside to this keyboard is the touchpad. It's good that it's a tablet though because I always turn it off..
the battery is excellent i'll give it that
At the beginning I was like you, but 3 months later (or something like that), it's over. You just need to use it often, and it'll be better.
If you read the reviews at all, that have been out for a year now, you would know that the keyboard is crap. But it's a netbook keyboard and it's a one of a kind item. Yes, I would pay $200 for the keyboard because without the keyboard this tablet is worthless. Both in the aspect of the GTab 10.1 being superior tablet, and that I wouldn't want a tablet that I couldn't use as a netbook.
Do you people really just go out and buy things without doing any research/reading any reviews? Shame...

It isn't a full size keyboard. That should have been obvious before buying it. It isn't meant to replace a computer. Don't like it, return it or sell it. No reason for the thread. Personal preference is just that.

Keyboard is crap? I've owned the keyboard dock since day one and I find it indispensable. In fact, the transformer is just another ordinary tablet without it.
Then again, I need my device for business use. Perhaps those who don't like it, simply don't have a need for it.

i like the idea of the keyboard but these scissor switches are terrible
does anyone here actually have a mechanical keyboard?
I have used my keyboard for my last year of school and I would say that 75% of my use is with the keyboard on mine.. I agree that the keyboard is what makes the tablet.. Yes it is different then a regular keyboard.. its the same size as most netbook keyboards.. 92% of full size right?
I didnt like it at first either, but after a month on it, I can type just as fast on my transformers keyboard as I can on any of my other keyboards.. just have to give it some time.

I do, a Siig keyboard with Cherry Mx Blues (wanted to get a Das but I didn't have the cash for it).
I mean honestly, I've been typing on keyboards since I was a toddler (used to play with my mom's old portable IBM computer back when she was a consultant manager). Some keyboards are much more comfortable to type on than others depending on layouts and the technology under the hood so to speak, but with a little time you tend to get used to whatever you're stuck on (unless the keyboard in question is inherently broken, your hands are way too big, etc.)
For quick notes in class, my transformer is now simply awesome. Before I got my dock, it was a Netflix bed machine and not much else. After grabbing my dock from CL for $60, I actually have a handly little netbook/tablet now.
If you don't like it, that doesn't affect how much enjoyment I'll be getting out of mine. I hope you do come to enjoy the newfound utility of your Transformer though.
USB ports. That is all.

Did you read my post? I said that it was absolutely necessary, as the device p much sucks without it. That doesn't stop the keyboard from being total ****. It's very difficult to type on, even compared to normal notebook keyboards.

I use my keyboard daily! I blog a bit, do lots of business emails on it (much better than typing on an iPhone all day).
I always end up turning off the touchpad to type.
I would not buy a tablet without a real keyboard after having one.
BUT - That is my preference. Not everyone feels the same way about the keyboard.
And one great side effect is when someone asks you about your "laptop" or "netbook" and you tell them it is not either, but it is a tablet. Then you get to watch them have a nerdgasm when you undock it and keep using it.
http://www.slashgear.com/asus-audio-dock-hands-on-with-transformer-prime-06232637/
looks interesting but i already bought a bluetooth speaker so i won't be buying this.
Would have been nice if the keyboard dock had speakers integrated into it.
Looks like you can't use the keyboard dock and this at the same time.
After about a billion audio docks for the iPad, finally a good multimedia dock for an Adroid tablet!
I think its great, and I'll buy one the day it comes out. Hate having a keyboard in front of me when I'm watching movies. This looks really nice, and it looks like it will allow simultaneous power and data from the photo of the jacks on the back.
The idiotic design of the motorola media dock for the XOOM didn't have a usb port, only power and a crappy speaker. Had to take it out of the dock every time I wanted to add a file to play. And its nice to hear that it will be compatible with both the prime and the 700t. Wonder if the tf300 will get one? Cheap plastic with beats audio probably.

Wow, your right, nice touch on the part of ASUS.
I've still be waiting on this dock with no updates in 6 months. Is it ever going to see the light of day? It's even posted on Asus's website.
It's a cool idea if they actually make it available.

Now this is nice! I'll have to check it out once it's released and see what it sounds like. This definitely looks promising. :good:
my wife would love this hope it comes out soon.
It costs $200 here in Australia @[email protected]

I found the MK802+ for $39.99 with free shipping!
http://www.geekbuying.com/item/In-S...GB-RAM-4GB-ROM--Better-Than-MK802-307558.html
Android 4.0
Allwinner A10 w/ Mali400
4GB Storage
1GB of ram
802.11 b/g/n
It comes with:
HDMI cable
USB cable
AC adapter
English Manual
It also includes some bonus items:
4-port usb hub
usb 3d sound adapter
This is a very good price for the MK802. Even better when you consider the extras.
I'm buying one to have around as an extra dual booting android/linux box.
(I already own 1 mk802, several UG802, and 1 MK808.)
I've been interested in these for a while, and I have been waiting for this price point. How do they work? Do they do everything your phone/tablet can do. I would be interested if it could play a game like Batman The Dark Knight Rises Game (or something as intensive). Also how does something like Onlive work? Any browser crashes?
Snagged two and an air remote

Any posibility to upgrade the mk802+ to jelly bean? Speed diference is noticeable compared to the mk808?
Thats a really good price considering they give you some nice accessories to go with it. You could attach it to a monitor and keyboard/mouse and have a really cheap thin client desktop running Android.
Any one else notice the Engrish on that page, "Get this MK802+ NOW,Throw your Dumb TV!!"
Not sure how well this would work if I throw my TV.
Decided to go ahead and get 2 of these. Basically give someone a cheap computer for mostly browsing and email. Very portable.
There are some bad reviews online with that seller, they say do not purchase from them and they are affiliated with some other stores bad stores as well.

Personally I've not had any problems with geekbuying.com, but as always if you're not comfortable then don't order from them.
You're more likely to get what's described from them than you are from a random aliexpress seller.
IMHO many bad reviews for chinese sellers are for cheap tablets. People expect way too much out of those tablets.
I bought a wireless mouse/keyboard which is recommended with it and it worked at first but the mk802 won't see it now. I've also tried 3 or 4 wireless mice with most not working. Is that normal?

just got my 2 today. a first there was a wifi lag problem but after fixing that everything working great. youtube and netflix working perfect. would be nice to have bluetooth on this but other then that it would just fine. also they sent me my order twice so instead of just getting 2 I got 4 of these for $75. Was $80 but use the $5 code. so 4 of these for $75 can't beat. 1 for my mom; 2 for the kids and 1 for me. Saved me form having to buy tablets.
zaiaku: why don't you tell them that?
just loaded jellybean on this thing and it's great. out the box everything works great but don't expect much of a wifi strenght from this thing. Most phones have a much better range. After putting jellybean on it definitely worth it. Smoother, more responsive; more options. no change in netflix but much more control in youtube.
Is it easy to put jb on this? Is it rooted your device?
Can anyone tell me if IP can works full screen on this ?
Cause I really need to run surveillance cams on TV with this.
PS: 32 " TV.

Very easy. From everything I ever had to root and flash this was very very simple. I did the first one and my 10yo daughter did 2 of the other ones. Takes around 5min from start to boot.

Can you use a usb mouse or keyboard with this? Seems like the perfect thing to add to one of my HDTVs. Plus thats really cheap.

Yes you can use a usb mouse and key board or use a bluetooth dongle and use bluetooth which is what I'm doing now. So far the only problem I've seen with this thing is the range from the router. My phones and tablets and computer have a much larger range then this.

Makes sense, its hard to fit a decent sized antenna in there, and at $40 I doubt the money is spent engineering a great antenna setup like inside phones. There are USB to ethernet adapters out there that work with Android, I wonder if external USB wireless adapters would work.
Sounds great!
That looks like an awesome deal! Definitely planning to give it a try. Thanks OP
