Just picked up an Iconia A500 today from another person on CL and they have already updated to the latest release 4.010.13_COM_GEN2.
I want to root this, but want to be sure it's ok to root without screwing up my brand new toy.
Can I root this with iconiaroot1.3?
Thanks!
Yes, absolutely.
Optiona after rootl:
Then you can install Acer Recovery Installer from the market to install Clockwork so you can flash other roms and kernels.
*** however, if you decide to go past just rooting, after installing Clockwork make a complete backup before doing anything else.

So I rooted a couple of days after I got the Tab, left the Stock Rooted Rom and then loaded the Honey Villian Kernel for O/C purposes. Since O/C is the only thing I do with Root, I am thinking of going back to Unrooted.
My question is, in Iconia Root, if I hit the Unroot with the Custom Kernel still installed what happens? or since I do not have a copy of the original Kernel, how can I reinstall it before Unrooting?
Build is Acer_A500_4.010.13_com_gen2
Current Kernel is 2.6.36.4 Honeyvillain- 1.0+
Thanks in advance

Did you not backup using CWM before flashing your custom kernel?
If you made that mistake, all you need to do is get the stock kernel from the build you're currently on, create a CWM flashable file and flash your stock kernel back.
I did make a backup, then screwed up and wiped the External Card it was stored on. I know, such a newbish mistake. Since then, I have other Backups, just not one with the Original Kernel.
thanks a bunch.. will see if I can search out the kernel I need.
Just grab one of the stock 3.2.1 roms in the development section and install it through cwm. That will replace the kernel, then run acer recovery installer from the market to return to stock recovery. After that you can try running iconiaroot to remove superuser or you can just uninstall it from settings/applications. Now you should be good to go.
Here is a link to a non rooted latest version. It installs through cwm. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1429199
The problem is, cwm will still be on your tablet so you will have to flash the stock recovery. I don't know where you can get a flashable version of the stock recovery without using Acer recovery installer which of course requires you to be rooted to use. Although the advantage to keeping cwm will be you can still flash a custom rom in the future the disadvantage would be you won't be able to take OTAs because they will fail when the don't find the stock recovery.
So even if I successfully Unroot, I will not be able to take OTA's?
I have the kernel and was just going to flash it back, and Unroot. If I cant take the OTA's then it's not worth the effort.
Thanks for the information.. My tablet is fine the way it is, just figured if I wasn't really using root, I would go back to stock. Not really interested in flashing a Rom as I don't want to reload all the apps and set it back up.
Thanks again, as usual you guys are quick and helpful.

@Alteros - What I am about to say is NOT recommended by 90% of all posters so I expect there to be replies urging you not to do this - HOWEVER - if you install a custom Rom then just wipe the following (1)Cache (2)Dalvic Cache (3)Battery Stats DON'T wipe DATA. When you format just format the following (1)System (2)Cache (3)Flexrom DON'T format DATA.
By doing this you should get back all your Apps. There is a possibility, as other posters will tell you, that you will screw up the new Rom and then have to jump through hoops to get back to Stock. But if you want to take the chance and it works then you will have your new Rom and retain your Apps.

yeah that might work, but he may just to get titianium backup and backup all his apps, if he is going to revert to stock, by flashing a stock rom over a custom rom things might act funny and since he is not rooted only thing he can do is wipe the device and start new
his less headache way of doing things is to leave root and recovery, and use a stock rom. Theres alot of tegra devices out there and who knows how long this community will be kicking out updates long after acer closes support for A500
Thanks to everyone that helped. I ended up loading Thor's 14.2 over the weekend, was not nearly as painful as I thought it would be. So I may try more in the future.
You guys are always quick to respond and helpful.
What I think I learned is that, once you root, you can never go completely stock again. Since there is not a way to get rid of CWM, at least not easily.
I never got the original ICS update OTA, after trying every troubleshooting suggestion ASUS had to offer I finally just said screw it and rooted my TF101 and installed the ROM manually from here. Now, strangely enough, I am getting the latest one OTA with the option to postpone only 3 times, I'm not concerned with losing root or anything, I just don't want to brick my tablet. Is it safe to take the update?
Do you have CWM installed?
It generally is a bad idea to install official OTA's on a rooted device. If you're running a normal Asus Rom modified to keep root you might want to just flash ARHD while you're at it
Thats what I thought, thanks for confirming that for me. What exactly is ARHD? I do have CWM installed.

Anyone have any issues trying to update with the stock ROM and recovery (not rooted either)? My wife's will download the update and reboot where it shows the android guy and the progress bar that gets to about 1/3 the way across, then get the Android guy with the Exclamation point in the triangle. Tried it twice.
Anyone else getting this?
Just so I have it straight ...
I have the same issue. I have an updated to ICS and rooted the device (no custom ROM) TF101. I have CWM installed.
I have the option to update the firmware ....
1) should I unroot and install the OTA update? Then re-root?
2) Go ahead and install regardless
3) Then I can install the ARWD?
4) some other option ????
I have looked and I haven't found a clear answer.

This is what I did with mine. It updates everything but your recovery since you have a custom one on yours. This was the easiest thing with CWM installed with the stock ICS ROM
Thanks folks! I have my answer.
Quick question for the guru's... I just realized that I can't get into recovery since doing the OTA ICS upgrade and rooting. I have both Acer Recovery Installer and ROM Manager, so I'm guessing I'll be fine using either to install a new recovery, but was curious if doing so would impact being able to get future OTA upgrades or not? I've done custom ROMs in the past, but I'm sticking with the stock OTA and rooting them at the moment and just wanted to double-check that a new recovery (or installing clockwork recovery) won't impact future upgrades.
Thanks for any advise!
JM
OK, I gave it a couple weeks - so I've got to give it a <bump> at this point.
Any advise?
Thanks!

I will assume you have stock bootloader? (the one that came with the OTA)
First off, don't use ROM Manager. It's for phones. Although it runs on tablets, you run a high risk of bricking your device if you use it.
Secondly, you have to be rooted before installing CWM. The most important is deleting the "boot-recovery" file located in the /system directory. Otherwise, whenever you boot your tab, the CWM will get overwritten. Instructions for this can be found in Civato's bootloader guide in the Dev section. Pretty easy to find.
There are also some handy apps, like After OTA for example. Like AcerRecovery, you should be able to install a CWM on your tab. I would use EZTerry's Public Recovery or Thor ver 1.7.3 CWM.
As far as future OTA, it will not effect the ability to get one provided you are running a stock rom. The only thing, when taking an OTA, you will lose root and recovery. And, there always is, as with any OTA, a risk the OTA will fail.

MD, Thank You very much for the advice. While sitting in the airport with delays yet again, I finally had time to check the forum. Yes, I still have the stock boot loader. I am very glad you mentioned NOT using ROM Manager, as that was the method I was leaning towards using.
I'll take a look at Civato's guide this weekend (if my flight ever leaves and I can make it home).
Thanks again for the advice!

original discussion from afterOTA thread
Hi,
atm, I have an A501 with CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.x(thor2002ro rev1.7) and Android 3.2 (EMEA CUS7 - Germany).
My Tab tells me that there is an update, which I downloaded and tried to install. However, after a few seconds an Android with a red exclamation mark appears and the installation of the updates aborts.
So, I want to remove CWM Recovery and root and return to a stock rom. However, that seems impossible. I downloaded the Acer Recovery Installer App but this one offers me a USA A500 stock rom - but I need an A501 rom because of 3g.
When I try to install this one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1234039) I decrypted before, CWM tells me
"Installating update...
Installation aborted"
So, this does not work either.
I am really desperate because I have to revert to a stock rom...
Can someone please, please, please help me out?

The update has overwritten yr custom recovery with the Acer stock recovery. It also checks yr system files if it ain't completely stock it will abort. being rooted can also affect the update.

Thank you a lot for your answer!
Yes, I did install cwm again from acer recovery installer, but that did not change anything.
Unfortunately none of the roms offered on xda work, they all abort in cwm and I don't know why.
I would prefer to go back to a stock rom with stock recovery because I want to give the tab to someone else.

Yeah, you may have difficulties flashing full packages via CWM. Especially if you didn't decrypt the rom first.
I've got a few 501 roms you can try. All HC 3.2.
One of them, is an ATT full package update which will probably work for you. Just pull the update.zip out of it. Put it on your Ext SD card, and boot holding PWR and Vol+. This will force it to install update.zip from the SD card.
Any rom you use, you have to decrypt it first. Some try renaming the rom to update.zip, and some have success using this method.
Like I say, it's an AT&T rom, but is probably really a ComGen 1. So it should have decent language support.
If you're interested, I can throw them up on a server tomorrow.
But I tell you this first, before you go messing around with these things. GET YOUR UID Number first, and write it down. You can get instructions on UID in the Development Forum, 1st page usually. It's easy.

No probs!!
U must use a "update.zip" , decrypted first as Moscow said, and booting into recovery via button combo may help too,
also remember to remove the zip file off the ext. sdcard when you are done!!
....good luck
