I am rooted and have CWM installed. I am looking to put back the stock 4.22 recovery so I may install the the 4.24 OTA update.
I like to keep my Rom stock and prefer to install updates via OTA.
If you take the 4.24 OTA you will no longer be "rooted" Look for one of the rooted ROMs and flash it

I am using the Unrevoked root method and no update (3.70,4.22) to date has unrooted my phone.
I have simply been restoring the current version of the stock recovery, which I have previously found on the internets, and then running the OTA update as normal. Once done I install CWM and the latest SU updates. Works great.
I would like to perfrom this method once agian to install the 4.24 update and all I need is the 4.22 stock recovery.
If you don't want to be rooted anymore, then just accept the OTA - it'll override your current recovery with the stock recovery, which is actually a lack of recovery.
But as others have said, you won't be able to root again unless you've ran unrevoked or unrevoked forever and remain s-off. In that case, you'll have to flash a recovery and then flash the rooted version. So if you want to stay rooted, you might as well go ahead and do that. You should be able to just wipe cache and dalvik and install, so the end result will be the same but you'll be rooted.

This is the actual update, but rooted, so you can keep your CWM recovery, get the latest update that was made OTA, but remain rooted. You don't want to just accept the OTA if prompted, your root will go away.

Thats the problem. I cannot install the OTA 4.24 update with CWM installed, nor can I install the update manually, via renaming and then update method, as it will error out during install.
OTA updates will only install if the proper stock verion of recovery in installed, hence I really need the 4.22 recovery.
Installing OTA updates when using Unrevoked does not change S-OFF, it only overwrites SU which can be easily reinstalled. I know as I rooted my evo way back when it was version 3.26 using unrevoked 3 and have installed every OTA update since using this method and still have S-OFF
Thanks, but I do not need to go that route. My method will update as normal and I wont have to wipe my phone.

And you won't be rooted anymore. There are only about 3 thousand posts telling people this, and most AFTER they found out the hard way. There are stock Rooted ROMS based on the recovery, as in STOCK! but still rooted, and up to date.
BTW, there are also a lot of posts detailing how the OTA made their phones worse, but if you want to be a hard head, go ahead and bury yourself, but don't come back crying when you figure out.
how come every other incompetent noob can manage to get their phone back to stock and permanently locked/unrooted, yet I cannot manage this feat intentionally?
if I intentionally flash the 4.22 zip from shipped-roms will this eliminate my root and recovery?

I appreciate the heads up, but if done correctly, it does work and has worked great for me the past few OTA updates.
I am aware of all the potential problems and am not the only one successfully installing OTA updates on a rooted evo and staying rooted.

Bottom line is if you change back to S-ON, and apply the OTA you lose root forever (or until Unrevoked finds a new backdoor). If you leave S-OFF then you can downgrade, and reload a recovery. The stock ROM's you'll find here (ex. Sprint Lover's) are stock, and rooted. They pretty much the same thing you get over the air. Don't be a lid..
I downloaded a from shipped roms the last rom for my evo and downloaded the s-on tool. Ran the tool then connected my phone to the computer and ran the RUU i donloaded. Fully stock unrooted locked phone

First learn the correct terminology for what you are tying to achieve. There is no 4.22 recovery that you can just flash, there is a 4.22 ROM and a 4.22 RUU.
Then check out the WIKI and FAQs these both contain the info you are looking for .
Not trying to be mean. Just do some research before you mess up your phone and come here asking for stuff that doesn't exist.
4.22 ROM = just the ROM
4.22 RUU = .exe that runs on your PC to FLASH your PHONE with new radio, recovery, hboot, rom, etc

I have a rooted nexus S. When i first rooted it i had this issue

Now when i get OTA updates the phone reboots and then the android icon with a package appears. the install begins but fails to and android with an exclamation mark icon.
I dont have logs because when i reboot the update isnt offered anymore for a really long time. does any one have any idea what could be wrong?

I got this when I rebooted my NxS several times while the OTA was ready to be installed. It somehow got lost and couldn't be retrieved anymore.
As I couldn't find a solution I just reflashed the official 2.3.4 full rom and then got a) a working stock recovery and b) a working OTA again.
Official stock roms are signed and can be flashed via the stock recovery and don't need unlocked bootloader.
Thanks, i think i will wait for ICS and then reflash. I'm too lazy to do it all now and then again in a few months time.

Depends on how you define "everything". You'll need at least an open bootloader to flash the superuser zip via a custom recovery(, can relock the bootloader afterwards).

Noob question though ..... I am on a custom ROM. I have CWM recovery.
I thought I couldnt update OTA if my TF was rooted ? or is it that I have the custom recovery that prevents this ?
I can flash back to stock easily - its removing CWM and unrooting that looked to be the more techie issue.
With what you are saying is there an easy way, once I have reverted to stock ROM, to revert to stock recovery without losing root ? Or do i even need to revert to stock ROM ??

That might work, I don't know exactly because I got the FOTA pushed to my device and updated through the 'official' update process. I honestly have no idea how the dlpkgfile is even packaged, if it is CWM flashable or requires stock recovery etc., honestly my first time fooling with capturing the OTA files.

Unfortunately I never did get around to trying the latest Spark, I saw the complaints about touchscreen issues and decided it might be best to wait for Paul to work it out, but Asus finally got the upper hand on him!
Seems a treat, but I expected as you can see I've been running CM9 on my epic for about 3 weeks now. Much snappier, generic comments that have already been posted- but not explored completely yet, too busy helping others get their own ICS since the update came in to be selfish and sign off yet
Steven, I'm not sure which step 7 you are referring to but you will need a stock recovery in order to flash the file. CWM will flash files that have been repacked for CWM usually, and OTA updates install from the cache partition so CWM will not be able to install the OTA. CWM can flash it manually, I THINK (not sure if it needs to be repackaged for that to occur or not), but CWM will not install the OTA through the normal OTA process.

I was refering to step 7 on the Unlocker page you pointed to:

So in short only replace the recovery as explained in pojnt 7 (and 8) of that page and then do a regular system update to ICS.
No need to unroot??
Will this keep my apps and settings? I do have Titanium so I can do a backup and restore that way.

Yes, your apps and data should remain intact, and that is correct, you only need to flash the recovery back to stock if you are already on a stock ROM. As of right now, only US and TW firmware versions are getting the OTA pushed to their device, but if you are not one of these you can manually flash to these stock ROMs via CWM if need be. But yes, if you are stock + root + CWM, you only need to flash over CWM back to stock. Root is fine to keep and all data will be saved (it is an official update, people would be irate if it wiped their data you know!)

Well I did the update with root disabled with rootkeeper but now rootkeeper will not restore Root.

If you are SBK1 device you can flash CWM via NVFlash, use CWM to flash SU binary from ChainsDD (located HERE ) and then flash the stock recovery if you so choose to return to stock recovery (in case any patches or incremental updates come out you may need this if you want to stay stock ICS).
ONE MORE THING BEFORE I GO GUYS;
I just noticed that ICS brings a new recovery as well, so the update will overwrite your recovery, I assume it will do this if you figure out how to flash via CWM so be prepared for that. Any devs will want to work on removing the recovery blob from the patch file before releasing as a CWM flashable zip. My 2 cents. See you guys in a few hours/days, depending on how addicted I get to ICS.

After I updated to ICS, OTA Rootkeeper gave me the option to Restore root. Under the status section, Device rooted and Root permission granted were both unchecked until I used the Restore root option.
I have a stock rooted Nexus 4 running Android 4.3 (JWR66V) and a custom recovery. Recently, the JWR66Y update showed up on my phone and I turned on OTA survival mode in SuperSU and proceeded to install the update. It booted into TWRP and proceeded to install up until a certain point but then it froze. I cancelled the installation and rebooted my device and I even got the "Updating Applications" indicator on the first boot. However, I checked the version and it was still on JWR66V and my device no longer shows an update available. I did the exact same thing with my Nexus 7 (2013) with the JWR66Q update and the same thing happened. Is there any way I can install an OTA update on a rooted device? Every time an update is available for one of my devices, I end up doing a full factory reset of my device to install an update. I have only been able to find things like Clean ROM and Shiny ROM and while I do appreciate the work these developers are doing for the community, I would prefer to be able to either download a fully stock and non-deodexed flashable zip for my device or find a way to install the OTA update without losing root. It would also be great if I could do so without a computer because I currently only have a Chromebook. Thank you very much.
Are you sure it was the update to the Y version? What did the file size show as in the system update notification? There have been 2 very small (1.8mb) updates which don't change the build number, maybe that's what you installed.
I am also stock rooted and have received each system update as usual, remember they take time to roll out world wide.

Now that you mention it, I'm actually not sure. However the update didn't complete either way. It froze on a step involving the boot.img (sorry I can't remember exactly what it was doing). I don't really need a fix for it anymore as I have already manually installed the updates using a friends computer but I only know how to do so by flashing the factory image and losing all of my data along the way. But just so I know for future updates, do you use OTA Survival mode or OTA Rootkeeper or anything like that or do you simply install the update as you would on a non-rooted device? The root isn't the problem. The custom recovery is. You need to be on stock recovery for the update.

Can I fastboot flash the stock recovery after I've already flashed a custom recovery and still have root? And if the answer to that is "yes" will I still be rooted after the next OTA update?
I am having the same problem. Both my nexus 4 and 7 recieved an update (1.8MB) but it seems that i cannot get the update to install. Both devices were rooted using the Nexus Root Tool kit.
When i got the update the devices booted in recovery mode with TWRP. Do not know what to do. I saw no update in the baseband or build number.
I am running stock android.
Please advise

Why do you need OTA update when you can get the stock ROM in flashable zip file? All features are remain the same for stock ROM. Search and download it in the Development sections.

I am rooted and received the OTA notification yesterday. You 'SHOULD' be able to install if ALL you did was root. However, if you applied any mods that made changes to the system, the OTA will fail.

Did you read the linked post?
First step after installing custom recovery is to wipe data/factory reset, so yes, you will lose your settings.

What I would like is to update to kitkat without losing my data.
I have the bootloader unlocked and the phone rooted, but when I go to recovery mode I get "No command" screen (is that normal?).
I was thinking of getting the phone unrooted, then update through the OTA, then root it again, just for making sure I don't break anything, but the "No command" screen does not look very good...
On the other hand, Would I lose my data if I "unroot" the phone?

To unroot, all you need to do is go into SuperSu, disable root, uninstall the app and then reboot the phone.
If all you have done is root the phone, and didn't modify anything else, then the OTA update 'SHOULD' install without a problem.
You can go to Android Police and download the OTA files and flash them via ADB, or you can just wait for the OTA to be pushed to your device.
If you decide to do it the manual way, there is one additional step you must take to ensure to keep your data I believe.

At first I had 4.2.2, then I rooted and installed CWM. When 4.3 was released I got the OTA update correctly but I lost the root, so I rooted it again, this time without CWM.

Glad I could help. In the future, as long as you don't modify the system by flashing any modifications, you should be able to get the OTA update to install. Root doesn't affect this, and if you're worried about it, you can always uninstall it.
I opted to update using the stock zip files that were posted above and it worked just fine for me.
