Best custom rom w/o the crapware - EVO 4G General

which rom is the best without all the crap ware? Is there a rom out that just works? Flashing the rom without ever have to go into titianium to remove the unwanted appz...some of them you can't even remove from the rom. what ever app i want, I can just install it. CM and miui doesn't have crapware but not everything works. I don't want to have to install 3rd party software just to have certain feature works. All the other roms have crapware like facebook, peep, weather and news, desk clock, and etc... It beats the purpose of rooting your phone and at the same time custom roms may also have a lot of crapware.

well sometimes u cant always have what you want, you gotta compromise, or just learn to be a rom dev, and make your own?

LOL what third party software do you have to install with cm7? Cm7 works great without the need for anything.

Once rooted, there is nothing you can't uninstall/delete with Root Explorer. Pick your fav ROM, buy Root Explorer and delete away. That said, you will have sense running in the background on anything that is not AOSP (unless you run a sense remover of some sort. I think Calkulin has one.)

miks roms work but he keeps the crapware in there because some people like it and most keep it on there but move it to sd or whatever just so if someone does like it they can use it but its all uninstallable... i am with you though i go through many apps and remove them and gotta do it everytime but i dont care i could leave it if i wanted lol but dont use it so no need to

cm7+savaged-zen works great, the only thing that i have run into trouble with is the gps which is an easy fix with this New GPS drivers! v1.1

in my own opinion i love Miui i fell in love with it..
Miui with Savaged zen SBC(latest) Vipermod (flash Insanemode) Ram script Mod.Overclocked to 1.13ghz. my phone really feels better acts better games better Battery LASTS WAY LONGER...only problem no app drawer but you can always use zeam launcher that makes it even faster i think

Go with MikG man, it comes with some of the "crapware" but you can easily remove everything you don't want and the rom is phenomenal

EVO Deck is about one of the cleanest ROMs you can get; he strips CM7 clean of a lot of the stuff they add (language packs and stuff) so his zip file is pretty small.
I highly recommend his ROM if you want a good all-around AOSP experience; combined with Tiamat 3.3.7 it also gave me the best battery life of any ROM I've used.

Deck and SalvageMod are extremely lightweight

I'd recommend Vaelpak. His 3.2 is a very solid senseless based Rom. His .2.2 is still in beta more or less but has been good so far. It is a complete aosp Rom.

I've tried...
Deck
Vaelpak
Synergy
MIUI
All of which have been awesome in their own way. Deck was like the stock Android experience, Vael was like stock Android mixed with sense and a lot of options, Synergy is a really solid sense rom and MIUI is just a cool take on Android.

The newest Vaelpak is a GB based full aosp. The 3.2 (which I'm guessing is the one you have tried) is the senseless rom.

MIUI is nice but no 4G so that's out.
CM7 is nice but not everything works perfectly, then its a find the best kernel that does this or that so that's out.
For me, I settled on Kings Alliance 2.1 with hybrid 3.0 on my EVO 4G. Everything works and well, battery life great, camera, 4G, wifi and tons of modifications if you want.
These are my opinions but for looks, simplicity, speed and not any bloatware right off the bat, try Kings..

In fairness, I don't think there's any custom ROM not based on stock that works perfectly. There are always nagging little issues like auto brightness not working or having to run a driver fix for GPS with every CM nightly. You have to take the good with the bad.

Cyanogen works great for me without any problems

OMFGB Nightlies are real good.. Android 2.3.5, different from CM. Has some interesting features and T-Moblie Theme Chooser
Also like Just_S said before, you can easily remove any app you don't want..
A good free app I've been using is Root App Remover FOUND HERE
D/L For OMFGB Nightlies HERE

Titanium Backup is good for uninstalling apps too.

flashing rom with all the crapware and uninstalling crapware through titianium backup, doesn't that slow down your phone? look at windows mobile and windows os. Installing an appz and uninstalling it slows down your phone by half. cm and miui doesnt have 4g. The last time I checked, both still have issue with 160 character and tethering issues.

I never noticed any slow-down from uninstalling apps. CM7 supports 4G on the EVO; I can't speak for all other phones. I never had any tethering issues when using any custom ROM.

What's the difference between the one WITH voodoo and the one without?
Voodoo removes the bluish tint inherant to stock epic... but in my experience it only works when the screen brightness is at 100%

Voodoo is a different color scheme that can get rid of the blue tint that bothers some people. It only works at 100% brightness so I don't really have a use for it. The I have never really noticed a blue tint with my epic. If you want to know more about voodoo there is a link in the MixUp kernel thread that has all the details.
I should also mention that I use Launcher Pro Plus instead of touchwiz and I replaced the tocuhwiz calendar with the stock AOSP calendar. For clock speed management I use the Overclock widget instead of setcpu.

I second this! I've had the Nexus One with Froyo CM6 and the HTC EVO with Froyo CM6 and the stock rom that comes with the Epic is an excellent performer. All I did was root my stock rom and install clockwork recovery for backups. I then installed the SDX App remover which backs up and allows you to remove any app that the phone came preloaded with. I then removed the apps I didn't want. I also installed ADW Launcher which I prefer over TW and the Epic performs flawlessly! I flashed all sorts of different roms on my Nexus One and my Evo looking for a speedy, lag free bugless rom. The stock Epic rom with 2.1 performs on par with any of those other two phones I owned with their custom roms. My Epic is quick and bug free! Sure it might not have out of this world stats but I do not even notice that in real world usage. Touchwiz is not a huge makeover and resource hog like Sense UI. People complain about the Epics apps and they want to replace them with AOSP apps. TW apps ARE AOSP apps they are just slightly customized so that can be branded as TW apps. There theming is a little different and I actually like their custom touches which I think make them just that much more usable than AOSP apps. It will take a killer rom for me to stop enjoying my Epic the way I have it customized it with the stock rom.
By the way you can also install the custom TW 3.0 which lets you customize the app menu and dock!

A rooted stock rom is fine to stick with provided you install superuser.apk and apply the fix to joeykrim's root method that allows superuser.apk to work. I made a post with the instructions in the forum. Otherwise you are running a rooted rom with no control over which apps get root access and that is just crazy. Also, there is no reason to stay with the stock kernel. The undervolted Mixup kernel will increase your battery life by at least a few hours. That alone is reason to use it over stock even if you don't want the other enhancements.
I retired all the roms except backed snacks. My fav and current set up is thee boss rom v.3 with mixup kernel and blue minimalist theme. I also use the paid version of launcher pro. My phone is quick and snappy and full of eye candy

I had some issues with the Boss .02... some force closes (which permission fixing didn't fix). I had no issues with either the Epic Experience or BUB'S AOSP roms... both are extremely stable on my Epic with good battery life and fast performance. Currently I am running the latest Epic Experience ROM with no major issues.

Then you have a working superuser.apk so you don't need to worry about that part of my post but the MixUp kernel is still way way better than the stock kernel on battery life and functionality.
My 2 cents:
I'm using Epic Experience right now and loving it. He's got a few options for those who want to customize things like the lock screen, kernel, LWP's and such. Plus lately he's been updating it like every 15 minutes! lol
The stock rom is actually really good too though. It was rock solid when I was using it. But I'm a ROM junkie so I had to go custom =P

To rom or not to rom

That is the question.
Is it worth installing CM7 on a nexus S or is it better to just leave it as stock gingerbread (if you dont need the small amount of extra features)?
Also how would one go about 'formatting' a nexus S?
I bought the nexus s for the pure Google experience so I don't see a reason for installing a rom.
If I want another rom ill bit a better handset with better specs and build quality.
My 2 cents.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
You can have stock Gingerbread with CM7, you just have to reinstall the Launcher2.apk and remove (or just dont use) ADW Launcher.
I prefer custom ROMs/Kernels because they feel more snappy than completely stock.
I was using CM7 nighties since I got it. I'm not using stock rooted 2.3.3 rom and I don't see myself going back to nighties anytime soon.
All my other android phone I couldn't use without cm6/7. I lived for the stock Android. Now that this phone is 100% stock out of the box, I haven't had a reason to flash cm7 yet. I've had little to no problems and im satisfied with the stock rom.
Still gotta root though.

CM7 is still a bit unstable, I had it for 2 days and the phone rebooted at least 6 times(and 2 of those times it was stuck, had to pull the batteries out). Also, if you do use the RC1, don't volunteer to provide anonymous usage info as it makes it even more unstable.
I would recommend going with Kimera. Much more stable, very lite (ofc, that means you have to install a few more apps then usual).
The Nexus S with 2.3.x is the first phone I've not fell any compulsion to use a custom rom, even CM. CM7 might be interesting to me once it's out as an official release build, but I'm not sure even then. With previous phones I wouldn't consider running stock at all once the big boys brought their roms out for them, but Android 2.3.3 with Launcher2 is pretty darn good in my opinion.
Same for custom kernels, sort of. I didn't feel the need for one, but I have tried netarchy to get the Voodoo enhancements. I'm currently stock kernel, but have just downloaded the latest 2.3.3 netarchy to give it a whirl again.
there really is no reason to not use custom ROM. for example when cyanogen 7 gets finalized, it includes DSP audio manager boost, 720p video camera with enhanced settings, etc. those are crucial functions that work spectacularly. since its free, there's no reason to avoid those and use stock shen it increases functionality at no cost.
im running cm7 and i love it
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Paul's modaco rom is pretty stock look and feel but has 3G sip and a few small other tweaks. I like it. Can't really tell the difference from stock.
I can only speak from my limited experience, having ditched my Milestone for the Nexus. Having the option to put a custom ROM on the phone was enticing, even though I had no problem with stock ROM. I used ROM Manager, and did the no-loss root method, made a backup, and then did wipe and installed CM7 RC1.
Things I liked: power control widgets in status bar. The fact it introduced me to ADW Launcher and the vast library of themes on the market (I've been happy using LauncherPro so hadn't got to ADW yet). The smaller, more columns app drawer. I liked the fact it went about downloading all the apps I had I wiped. Overall it was a very smooth intro to custom ROMs.
Things I didn't like: apps placed in the dock would lose their custom icon (don't know if this was ADW or CM7's fault). Car home didn't work. Knowing that 2.3.3 will be available OTA soon and my phone wont get it while I am non-stock.
I kept using CM7 for about 5 days and had no crashes, but went back to stock today as none of the other features are of particular interest. Having power control in notifications area is nice, but it's not that much harder just to use widgetsoid and place them on a home screen (which is what I always do).
Anyway, horses for courses. Obviously some love it, but me I was meh. I have no problem with the speed and smoothness of stock, and didn't notice any increase when using CM7.

AOSP Rom advantages

I'm currently running Dark Revenge 3.0 on the EC10 kernel voodoo. I've flashed most of the current roms trying to find the best battery life I can find. I've read a little about AOSP roms. How do they differ from DR, SC and others? I don't really understand them. What kernel would I use? etc. I'm not going to try it immediately but I am considering it. Also, which one would be best for the Fascinate? Vanilla, Kaoscinate. Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions.
Basically AOSP roms are pure google android, they don't have any of the additions samsung/verizon added. The advantages of that? Well no Bloat for one, but that's easily taken care of by Superclean.
Honestly the vanilla AOSP rom lacks alot of features.
MIUI has some extra and pretty cool ones (mostly just more in depth options in the menus) As well as CM7(kaosinate).
However the amount of stuff that dont work on those roms outweighs any of the extra features in my opinion.
Plus not all the stuff from samsung is bad, like the power options in the pulldown menu and the built in task manager are great.
The only AOSP Rom I've used extensively is MIUI, and my battery life was awful compared to running superclean w/ Ec10.
AOSP is pure Android. Its the most cleanest, stock, non-OEM version out there. Its like getting it directly from Google themselves. Only use the kernel that the rom says to use. Basically, SC and DR are stripped down roms of the original Touchwiz Sammy bloated roms that originally run on a stock GalaxyS device. AOSP is the unviolated version of Android.

I'm running Jt's vanilla froyo as I type this. It is by far the best rom I have used to date. I am using the aosp voodoo kernel. From what I understand and I could be wrong and someone please feel free to correct me if I am but Aosp is like a straight Google rom with no Samsung or Verizon crap bloatware (useless apps) or touchwiz framework. It's kinda like an uncut rom pieced together from open source and is much smoother and much better in my opinion. It's kinda like building your own car from scratch. You can customize it any way you want and optimize it. SC, DR and BH roms are modified touchwiz roms. Basically a completed stock car and some of the parts have been changed. They are great roms but the devs are limited due to the fact that they are touchwiz framework. Vanilla is pure. At least this is how I understand it and if I am wrong then I apologize. Hope this helped.

What would I have to do to switch over? Full wipe or just cache and dalvik wipe or what? What about voodoo, do I need to disable then re-enable or just leave it like it is? Does the kernel come with the ROM or is it separate?
So I may have screwed up but I went ahead and tried it. I wiped cache and dalvik, flashed the vanilla voodoo kernel then the ROM. It went ok til I started getting alot of force closes in a row. So I figured it had deleted the apps when I flashed so no big deal. I'll just download them with Titanium, but no Titanium and no Market to get it from. Now what? I can't download the apps and I'm getting force closes because they're not there.
You have to do a FULL wipe. Data/cache/dalvik. Then flash in this order: Rom-Gapps-Kernel. Use the voodoo or non voodoo from jt's vanilla thread. Disable voodoo before wiping then after full wipe and flash, enable again

I've tried both and I don't really see the benefit of aosp. With adryn's sc rom and sbrissen's improvements, tw has more features and is more convenient. Plus now that jt has started devving for the Thunderbolt, updates to his fascinated aosp rom will slow at the very least.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Jt still updates aosp, and it is a very smooth rom, i use gmail for pic msg's anyway so mms is not a big deal to me, but I know it is for some
I feel the need to point out that the 0327 voodoo kernel over here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12422388&postcount=1
has in-call bluetooth audio working wonderfully, at least according to my earlier testing of receiving calls today with my BT headset.
It seemed pretty stripped of anything-verizon, so I'm still trying to figure out why I would want the AOSP kernel where some drivers still aren't working. Guess I'll stick with this for a while.

Ive been using mikg 2.45 its pretty nice, has sense 2.1/3.0 features and gives you the option to remove anything you'd like without sprint bloat.
I always use fresh 4.2. Its literally stock evo with no bloat and other goodies. Has good battery too.
I have used the Sprint lovers Rom for months. It's as close to stock as possible plus added performance and extra visual add ons that doesn't look out of place. I use titanium backup to delete the bloat.

Looking to upgrade my EVO ROM from the 2.2 version of Koni's ELITE Series III to a 2.3 version something
Its for my GF, so I am looking for stability over performance, but was thinking that 2.3 has been out long enough for the next round of 2.3 builds to be cooked up, and the basic bugs worked out
I got titanium, so I can remove bloat that way, so what I am looking for is better battery life, whatever next round of goodies are out cooked in, and pretty important is the pull down notification bar with the GPS, Flash, WiFi, BT, ETC across the top
Also, she will be running the SPD 3D Launcher, so sense will be a non-issue
I am pretty good with the install part, so was just looking for recommendations, as I haven't really touched her EVO since I installed the current ROM on it
Also, is CM7 good to go? Was giving real thought to installing, as long as she could run the SPD 3D Launcher, but it may be overkill, as stability and everything working is more critical than the advanced features of any build I decide upon
Calls, Texting, Pic/Videos, and facebook are 99% of what she does with her phone
Any tips/advice is welcome, thanks
Cyanogenmod 7 is what I'd reccomend. The latest stable version for her. It had all those things and you can install the spb 3d launcher

MIUI?

So been looking into miui, looks pretty cool, but is it worth it?
Is it the same process to flash like I would cm7? I use rom manager, and in it their is miui English. Can I use titanium backup to restore Apps and everything when I have it on?
Seems like a completely different os so I don't know if everything would work like it does on cm7.

Yes, apps will work, just make sure you only restore apps and nothing system related as it may cause bootloops and system instability.
And plenty of people love it, so I would assume it is stable and has decent battery life. The iOS-style of the OS never appealed to me, so I never tried it.
I've used MIUI and there are some things i didn't like there.
1. Camera is too dark on auto setting
2. Battery life is less than on CM7
But there are also some good things like smoother and very smart launcher, a lot of themes for it, nice widgets and some useful features in settings. All that thing are my own opinion and please excuse me MUIU lovers
P.S. got back to CM7

Miui is updated weekly. There are four "stable" builds released monthly. Miui.us, Miuiandroid.com, and Miui Scotland have English builds. You can also download at miui.com, but it is only in Chinese so you have to use google translate in order to navigate the site to find the download.
You can also download from Rom Manager, just wipe everything. Just like cm nightlies, if you are flashing the next weeks update, just wipe dalvik and cache and flash the rom over.
I use Titanium backup to reinstall apps after a flash and have never had any problem; and I switch back and forth between the latest Miui and Latest CM7 Nightly all the time. As BassMadrigal pointed out, only restore apps, not data when switching between these roms.
As for "is it worth it"? that is a question only you can answer by trying it. I love both CM7 and Miui but for different reasons. Try it and see what you think.
Note well that the weekly Miui betas vary in stability from week to week. These days they are generally very stable, but from time to time you get something not working. Moral of that story is make backups and flash back to them if the current weeks build is not right.

You should be able to restore data for those apps that you installed, but just make sure you don't restore any data for system apps. That is where you will run into problems.

Awesome. Thanks for replies. I figured not to restore system data, didn't know about app data though.
Didn't know if I had to do something else with the bootloader or anything. Will try when I get out of work.
Oh and were do I find themes? Are they on their website, or just in the market?

Yeah, I was in the same boat. I absolutely HATED it at first. Now, I don't use any other ROMs. My thing is to just use LauncherPro, though, so I don't have an iPhone-ish look but I have all the perks of an MIUI ROM.
I've pretty much tried them all, from Rod's MIUI back in the day, to the "standard" miui.us versions, and all the variations in between.
Now, I'm pretty high on JBs QND MIUI. Absolutely love it.
Its got a built in theme manager you can download all through there.....
Talking bout iPhones there is a transformation pack that changes everything it looks very convincing even changing menus and sliders if you wanna try the darkside

MIUI has more features than any ROM I have used. My only beef with it is there only seems to be one or two stable builds a month. Yes they release weekly, but I found at least 2 of these builds would be very buggy. Some would kill my a2sd and others would cause random reboots. If you can find a good stable version I highly recommend it! Keep in mind that most of their builds are still considered Beta builds. The last time I used it there was no version for the N1 that was considered stable. That does not mean you won't find a stable version, just nothing official. I have been running CM 7.1 for a while now, but have considered switching back for a change.
So I just got done flashing and setting it up. Love it so far. Its so different yet very nicely laid out. Still setting a few things up, so ill let you all how I like it after the first day.
Thanks for convincing though. Nice to try something completely different, but same style.

i use JBs QND on my nexus and overall its really good.
but its in the small things that CM is just better. for example miui has no lockscreen gestures (a feature i really loved on CM) the inbuilt trackball alert is pretty lame compared to CM (just 3 different notifications) and it doesn't work at all well with my cardock
these are some annoyances but overall its a really great experiance.
What's the difference between miui.us and the other version you were speaking of? I can't find anything to tell me the changes between the two. They look different? Run different? What's different?
