[Q] Which ROM to use? - Epic 4G General

I see several ROMs but I don't know how to pick one.
Can someone who has used them all please give me an overview and the plusses and minuses?
Thanks!

I posted this in the Epic 4G Android Development forum.

My favorite rom setup right now us Andromeda 1.1.1a with the MixUp kernel (no voodoo). I think its a really fast setup with amazing battery life.

The ROM that the phone comes with is pretty good too

Personally I am really enjoying Epic Experience ROM. Battery Life is great.

What's the difference between the one WITH voodoo and the one without?

Voodoo removes the bluish tint inherant to stock epic... but in my experience it only works when the screen brightness is at 100%

Voodoo is a different color scheme that can get rid of the blue tint that bothers some people. It only works at 100% brightness so I don't really have a use for it. The I have never really noticed a blue tint with my epic. If you want to know more about voodoo there is a link in the MixUp kernel thread that has all the details.
I should also mention that I use Launcher Pro Plus instead of touchwiz and I replaced the tocuhwiz calendar with the stock AOSP calendar. For clock speed management I use the Overclock widget instead of setcpu.

I second this! I've had the Nexus One with Froyo CM6 and the HTC EVO with Froyo CM6 and the stock rom that comes with the Epic is an excellent performer. All I did was root my stock rom and install clockwork recovery for backups. I then installed the SDX App remover which backs up and allows you to remove any app that the phone came preloaded with. I then removed the apps I didn't want. I also installed ADW Launcher which I prefer over TW and the Epic performs flawlessly! I flashed all sorts of different roms on my Nexus One and my Evo looking for a speedy, lag free bugless rom. The stock Epic rom with 2.1 performs on par with any of those other two phones I owned with their custom roms. My Epic is quick and bug free! Sure it might not have out of this world stats but I do not even notice that in real world usage. Touchwiz is not a huge makeover and resource hog like Sense UI. People complain about the Epics apps and they want to replace them with AOSP apps. TW apps ARE AOSP apps they are just slightly customized so that can be branded as TW apps. There theming is a little different and I actually like their custom touches which I think make them just that much more usable than AOSP apps. It will take a killer rom for me to stop enjoying my Epic the way I have it customized it with the stock rom.
By the way you can also install the custom TW 3.0 which lets you customize the app menu and dock!

A rooted stock rom is fine to stick with provided you install superuser.apk and apply the fix to joeykrim's root method that allows superuser.apk to work. I made a post with the instructions in the forum. Otherwise you are running a rooted rom with no control over which apps get root access and that is just crazy. Also, there is no reason to stay with the stock kernel. The undervolted Mixup kernel will increase your battery life by at least a few hours. That alone is reason to use it over stock even if you don't want the other enhancements.

I retired all the roms except backed snacks. My fav and current set up is thee boss rom v.3 with mixup kernel and blue minimalist theme. I also use the paid version of launcher pro. My phone is quick and snappy and full of eye candy
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

I had some issues with the Boss .02... some force closes (which permission fixing didn't fix). I had no issues with either the Epic Experience or BUB'S AOSP roms... both are extremely stable on my Epic with good battery life and fast performance. Currently I am running the latest Epic Experience ROM with no major issues.

Then you have a working superuser.apk so you don't need to worry about that part of my post but the MixUp kernel is still way way better than the stock kernel on battery life and functionality.

My 2 cents:
I'm using Epic Experience right now and loving it. He's got a few options for those who want to customize things like the lock screen, kernel, LWP's and such. Plus lately he's been updating it like every 15 minutes! lol
The stock rom is actually really good too though. It was rock solid when I was using it. But I'm a ROM junkie so I had to go custom =P

[Q] What's your favorite 4G compatible ROM?

I'm stuck can't decide which ROM to go with, Now that 4G is really up and running in my area, I am no longer using Cyanogen (My favorite) Now I can't decide which ROM to go with that supports 4G I like so many of them, What's your all' opinions on which ROMS you prefer. I like more of AOSP style ROMS over the Sense ROMS.
Opinions? Ideas? Suggestions?
Ava-froyoV9, netarchy 4.1.9 CFS kernal, with Riptides colornclear v8 theme. Smoothest combo ever and everything works.

i would say fresh evo 3 i love it
I take both of these ROMS are 4G compatible?
Yep, fresh or Ava for sure!
I think myn's 2point2 is the coolest right now...im running baked snacks #6 kernel and battery is awesome in this setup.

Thanks for the input I'm gonna spend the next couple of days flashing these ROMS, If anyone else has any opinions please share.
I'm also a fan of the more AOSP-styled ROMs and agree Cyanogen is my favorite but i can't forego the 4g. So, I'm using the latest Fresh ROM with the AOSP lockscreen (just remove the HTC lockscreen and dont set your alarm using the stock clock), launcherpro, and an AOSP theme that gives you the AOSP notification bar and other AOSP-styled looks. Here's a link to that theme's thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=753081
Note: I use V1 and not V2 because I think the bootanimation for V2 is crappy.

Are you running sense or launcher pro?
Evo after my Apple
I am running Myn's also. Didn't use any other kernel, and staying with sense, I'm liking it. Battery isn't bad and phone works fine. I don't see any others that I like really...I would like to ditch sense, but I don't want to have to find mail app alternatives and do those other steps you have to do if you run that app to rid sense.
recent ROMs i've tried:
baked snack
evio
myn
fresh
cm6 nightlies
burntdroid
virus
ac
vaelpak
back to evio - fast, stable, nice theme, nice screen transitions (myn's were nice at first but got old and slows things down a bit) and a lot of his work is used across other ROMs. also, another important factor for me is the extra space on internal storage - i have 116 apps all on internal storage with 150mb left!
other:
manup theme
kings #6 bfs kernel
I'll throw my vote in for Ava-froyov9 ROM.
I used tons of roms, and I like Cyanogen a lot(and am using it now), but as for the Sense roms, Ava was my favorite. Battery life was great, everything worked, and an easy AOSP lockscreen flash and ADW launcher made me feel better =P
I actually had lots of strange issues with Myn's rom and in the end, it came down to which ROM ran my NHL app the best.
If I wasn't playing around with different ROM's right now I'd be using Ava's
ava-froyo v9
thanks for all the recommendations everyone. I too am wanting to keep my 4g abilities so am worried about the limited roms as of now.
Today I have been using Frost v2.2.2 if you like AOSP this is for you, The only issue I noticed if I overclock in setCPU too much the phone crashes.
I think I'm gonna go with baked Snack

Bonsai vs Truly Epic

Hey guys, im currently running bonsai rom. I've tried justcabout every other froyo rom and always reverted back to 2.1, hated all of the issues on them, and they felt laggy to me. Bonsai has been amazing, camera issues aside.
So, I've never actually tried truly epic rom, and people have some really good things to say about it in the development thread. Which one of the two do you prefer? Why?

No, I believe he includes a separate theme zip now. Midnight is based completely on Bonsai though with only a few tweaks like taking out touchwiz launcher so not really too different.
Truly Epic has a nice launcher, but I prefer Bonsai with ADW EX or launcherpro personally.
I have tried most, if not all of the Rom's and always revert back to Midnight Rom. His latest is just a base Rom with a folder of add ins you can install separate. I like it because it is minimal and appears to have the best battery life.
Just my opinion though and as we all know: Opinions are like A#$ holes we all have them and most of them stink.
I just like the midnight attitude...... ya get what ya need ya add what ya want and it all works good really good cant imagine the alleged upcoming update being better than this
I have been running truly epic 1.5. No issues yet. I do recommend the clean install I tried the other way and and the phone force closed everything like a batsh*t crazy maniac. But all in all nice Rom. Very snappy no issues yet. The only issue I had with bonzai was video recording...it was like it couldn't keep up with motion..haven't tried video on this yet I'll get back to ya on that one.
EDIT: Still very slight lag on video but much better.

Turly Epic for a silky smooth experience!!!! Not a very popular rom here but over at android central its the most popular one and for good reason.

Ya need to try Go Launcher EX it murders Launcher and Adw.Its faster has more fetures, lighter, looks better and has integrigated task killer.
I was a big fan of Launcher Pro but the dude is so slow with updates that it made me try GO Launcher and now I cant see myself using anything else.Devs should include it in their roms.
Wow I was just about to comment and say people should try Go Launcher Ex because its awesome...i felt the same way, I loved launcher pro but decided to try go launcher and Idk if I'm going to ever go back...the integrated task killer is pretty awesome I must say and it is much snappier.

tried truly epic,Facebook would force close and I didn't like the fact that stock calculator was replaced, but it was good. Went back to bonsai for now. I think that I am going to go back to 2.1 stock to get ota, just seems as if all roms are sort of buggy, but I know that all the Devs do an amazing job and work hard.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
They are all buggy because they are all based off the buggy DK28 release.
In all seriousness I'd recommend Bonsai... It's very snappy and relatively bug free. You may as well wait though.. all the 2.2 roms will be refreshed in a few days and likely be brand new machines with the EB13 heart.
Yea, but I liked 2.2 stuff and gingerbread theme. Aside fromcfew annoyances, I really liked custom 2.2 stuff. 2.1 stock is definitely more stable, went back to it for now for the ota. I'm probably going to install bonsai once it gets updated though, I really don't like that we will be getting Sprint id, hopefully bonsai wont have it.

Bonsai with Go Launcher and SetCPU
That's my combo and I love it.
Bonsai is already snappy, but with SetCPU I'm getting another 10% boost in my benchmark scores. Battery life is suffering, but by habit, I charge my phone at home, work and car, so I always have enough juice anyway.
Thanks for posting your opinions. I'm new to the scene and had the same dilemma on which roms to play around with.

To rom or not to rom

That is the question.
Is it worth installing CM7 on a nexus S or is it better to just leave it as stock gingerbread (if you dont need the small amount of extra features)?
Also how would one go about 'formatting' a nexus S?
I bought the nexus s for the pure Google experience so I don't see a reason for installing a rom.
If I want another rom ill bit a better handset with better specs and build quality.
My 2 cents.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
You can have stock Gingerbread with CM7, you just have to reinstall the Launcher2.apk and remove (or just dont use) ADW Launcher.
I prefer custom ROMs/Kernels because they feel more snappy than completely stock.
I was using CM7 nighties since I got it. I'm not using stock rooted 2.3.3 rom and I don't see myself going back to nighties anytime soon.
All my other android phone I couldn't use without cm6/7. I lived for the stock Android. Now that this phone is 100% stock out of the box, I haven't had a reason to flash cm7 yet. I've had little to no problems and im satisfied with the stock rom.
Still gotta root though.

I dib and dabble just to try but I always come back to stock

CM7 is still a bit unstable, I had it for 2 days and the phone rebooted at least 6 times(and 2 of those times it was stuck, had to pull the batteries out). Also, if you do use the RC1, don't volunteer to provide anonymous usage info as it makes it even more unstable.
I would recommend going with Kimera. Much more stable, very lite (ofc, that means you have to install a few more apps then usual).
The Nexus S with 2.3.x is the first phone I've not fell any compulsion to use a custom rom, even CM. CM7 might be interesting to me once it's out as an official release build, but I'm not sure even then. With previous phones I wouldn't consider running stock at all once the big boys brought their roms out for them, but Android 2.3.3 with Launcher2 is pretty darn good in my opinion.
Same for custom kernels, sort of. I didn't feel the need for one, but I have tried netarchy to get the Voodoo enhancements. I'm currently stock kernel, but have just downloaded the latest 2.3.3 netarchy to give it a whirl again.
there really is no reason to not use custom ROM. for example when cyanogen 7 gets finalized, it includes DSP audio manager boost, 720p video camera with enhanced settings, etc. those are crucial functions that work spectacularly. since its free, there's no reason to avoid those and use stock shen it increases functionality at no cost.
im running cm7 and i love it
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Paul's modaco rom is pretty stock look and feel but has 3G sip and a few small other tweaks. I like it. Can't really tell the difference from stock.
I can only speak from my limited experience, having ditched my Milestone for the Nexus. Having the option to put a custom ROM on the phone was enticing, even though I had no problem with stock ROM. I used ROM Manager, and did the no-loss root method, made a backup, and then did wipe and installed CM7 RC1.
Things I liked: power control widgets in status bar. The fact it introduced me to ADW Launcher and the vast library of themes on the market (I've been happy using LauncherPro so hadn't got to ADW yet). The smaller, more columns app drawer. I liked the fact it went about downloading all the apps I had I wiped. Overall it was a very smooth intro to custom ROMs.
Things I didn't like: apps placed in the dock would lose their custom icon (don't know if this was ADW or CM7's fault). Car home didn't work. Knowing that 2.3.3 will be available OTA soon and my phone wont get it while I am non-stock.
I kept using CM7 for about 5 days and had no crashes, but went back to stock today as none of the other features are of particular interest. Having power control in notifications area is nice, but it's not that much harder just to use widgetsoid and place them on a home screen (which is what I always do).
Anyway, horses for courses. Obviously some love it, but me I was meh. I have no problem with the speed and smoothness of stock, and didn't notice any increase when using CM7.

Best custom rom w/o the crapware

which rom is the best without all the crap ware? Is there a rom out that just works? Flashing the rom without ever have to go into titianium to remove the unwanted appz...some of them you can't even remove from the rom. what ever app i want, I can just install it. CM and miui doesn't have crapware but not everything works. I don't want to have to install 3rd party software just to have certain feature works. All the other roms have crapware like facebook, peep, weather and news, desk clock, and etc... It beats the purpose of rooting your phone and at the same time custom roms may also have a lot of crapware.
well sometimes u cant always have what you want, you gotta compromise, or just learn to be a rom dev, and make your own?

Once rooted, there is nothing you can't uninstall/delete with Root Explorer. Pick your fav ROM, buy Root Explorer and delete away. That said, you will have sense running in the background on anything that is not AOSP (unless you run a sense remover of some sort. I think Calkulin has one.)

cm7+savaged-zen works great, the only thing that i have run into trouble with is the gps which is an easy fix with this New GPS drivers! v1.1
in my own opinion i love Miui i fell in love with it..
Miui with Savaged zen SBC(latest) Vipermod (flash Insanemode) Ram script Mod.Overclocked to 1.13ghz. my phone really feels better acts better games better Battery LASTS WAY LONGER...only problem no app drawer but you can always use zeam launcher that makes it even faster i think
Go with MikG man, it comes with some of the "crapware" but you can easily remove everything you don't want and the rom is phenomenal
EVO Deck is about one of the cleanest ROMs you can get; he strips CM7 clean of a lot of the stuff they add (language packs and stuff) so his zip file is pretty small.
I highly recommend his ROM if you want a good all-around AOSP experience; combined with Tiamat 3.3.7 it also gave me the best battery life of any ROM I've used.
Deck and SalvageMod are extremely lightweight

CM7 is nice but not everything works perfectly, then its a find the best kernel that does this or that so that's out.
For me, I settled on Kings Alliance 2.1 with hybrid 3.0 on my EVO 4G. Everything works and well, battery life great, camera, 4G, wifi and tons of modifications if you want.
These are my opinions but for looks, simplicity, speed and not any bloatware right off the bat, try Kings..

In fairness, I don't think there's any custom ROM not based on stock that works perfectly. There are always nagging little issues like auto brightness not working or having to run a driver fix for GPS with every CM nightly. You have to take the good with the bad.
Cyanogen works great for me without any problems

OMFGB Nightlies are real good.. Android 2.3.5, different from CM. Has some interesting features and T-Moblie Theme Chooser
Also like Just_S said before, you can easily remove any app you don't want..
A good free app I've been using is Root App Remover FOUND HERE
D/L For OMFGB Nightlies HERE
Titanium Backup is good for uninstalling apps too.
flashing rom with all the crapware and uninstalling crapware through titianium backup, doesn't that slow down your phone? look at windows mobile and windows os. Installing an appz and uninstalling it slows down your phone by half. cm and miui doesnt have 4g. The last time I checked, both still have issue with 160 character and tethering issues.

I have to say, I've grown to enjoy what Sense 3.5 has to offer. I fully intend the remainder of my phones on contract life to be spent with either Nils Business GingerSense 3.5 or (my currently installed rom) Warm TwoPointThree. I missed out on Warm TwoPointTwo and all it's heyday so I'm fully enjoying my first ever run with the Warm series.
Side note, I think my next android phone will spend its life on AOSP either because:
A) it's a Nexus device
B) I rooted/installed an AOSP rom
My current favs are Stock+/Inc-Deck GB/OMGB
I never have had a good experience with sense 3.0+ roms, too slow and I dont want to overclock although some of the roms are built really well. AOSP is really nice on our old hardware and always runs clean.

I've never tried MikG, Downloading and flashing tonight ^.^ hows the battery life? What kernel do you use etc? My personal fav has always been CM7
Cm7 loyalist no doubt. It gives the best performance, support, and customization of any rom. When I get a new phone, ill be shopping on the base of roms, and cm7 support is a must.

same here, love CM7. With heavy customization from android kitchen and other apps I'm loving my phone and don't have any urge to try other ROMs (maybe a bad thing?)
Sense always gave my phone a little more bloat, no matter how small it was, I'm still all for faster and leaner so that's why I've been stuck to CM7.
Just loaded up MikG and its booted, but its at the mikmikmik wallpaper, and no unlock screen, i can see the battery, time 3g and signal bar though..

Same happened to me on that rom a few times. I got it booted on my first flash but after that, none.
If you want a fun rom to play around with I suggest anyone of the super stock AOSP roms i.e. OMGB/Bugless Beast. What better way to customize than to start with the bare bones.
MIUI with my WP7 customizations runs like a boss. I underclock to 245/128 when I listen to music only and it runs as maybe a 700 MHz Sense rom would, while getting maybe days of battery.
I'm using Stock Plus with a bunch of themes I blended together. My favorite ROM of all time was WarmZ though. What I would give to have it in Gingerbread form... its what's in my sig actually.

ended up with MIUI
My first flash in the rooting game was McTwist. I enjoyed it but wanted to try something else. I switched to Nils Business GingerSense with sense 3.0 and loved his design and the smoothness. Something happened where after a few weeks my phone became unstable tho. Could have been my kernel or my phone or even the charger I was using since apps crashed when plugged in. I then decided to get away from sense roms and tried MIUI 1.12.9. It's smooth and doesn't seem to have that sense bloat. I flashed the latest incredikernel and have been loving the ROM since. It has custom themes which is great for me. I also find myself using the stock dialer,SMS, and camera instead of searching for an after market app. The only thing I didn't like was the homescreens and the launcher so I just use launcherpro and everything looks good.
So as a recap:
McTwist was good
Nils Business GingerSense was great but caused phone problems for me
Sticking with MIUI for now

I can see how the lag puts people off from Sense 3.5. I haven't run into the issue cuz I use ADW Ex (proudly purchased for .10 cents awhile back) and I just go about my business.

I believe it. Probably my personal favorite moment to be a member of XDA was when we first had the GingerSense leak last May. Development just shot through the roof for Sense 2.1+ roms. Sense 2.1 is the sweet spot.
