My SE Xperia Arc is sluggish! - Xperia Arc General

Hi all ,
Bought my Arc two months ago and loving it , however I’m little bit annoyed with its sluggishness. Whenever I exit any APP like email, games etc. APPs in desktop isn’t not appearing promptly and scrolling to other pages becomes literally very slow and sometimes freeze for a while! I occasionally can’t answer incoming calls, I keep sliding to answer but no response . I’m not quite sure what could be the reason.. although I’m not using any task killers apps, and my Arc is NOT rooted. And I always make sure that before installing any APP it is compatible with SE Xperia Arc and from Android Market!
I’d appreciate any help guys, is there anybody facing the same ? is it a manufacturer flaw ? is there a fix for my problem ?
I’m using Gingerbread 2.3.3.
Thanks in advance

No idea, mine flies...

How much free memory?

I have the neo which is pretty similar phone, I had a issue mush like yours 2 days ago, so i checked to see what running in the services there was an app using 80 meg of memory which seemed alot so i removed the app and now its fine, it was this app https://market.android.com/details?id=de.j4velin.notificationToggle&feature=search_result you may have this app or a different app thats doing something similar

Also suffering with this. Sometimes my phone will freeze going into dialler even when I have an app killer in the background.

Hi .. Thanks for the response
i notice the amount of free memory varies from 67 MB to 96 MB as max. could this be the root cause ?

You have to have good amount of RAM left. It's in the system, you can easy check this out.
And I personally don't recommend any background task killers.

My advice is get ur arc rooted, u will benefit much more from this. In addition, using Autokiller Memory Optimizations, it would serve ur sluggishness well

Thanks, can you please elaborate on how rooting my Arc would serve the sluggishness issue ?

Actually, I suggest you make a back up of important stuff and then use SEUS to repair/reflash your phone.
A fresh phone might just solve your worries. Good luck with it.

There are many stuff u can do when u get ur fone rooted:
+ Remove the bloatware that I'm pretty sure consuming a lot of both memory and battery
+ ur able to use tweaked kernel (made by DoomLord & if2 atm) or software like Autokiller Memory Optimizations which can optimized ur phone running smoother & faster. Besides, there is kind of handy script for arc called v6 supercharger. it is reportedly working on arc so well (no sluggishness, no lag)
+ and so many more u can find out of ur own accord
By the way, my arc is running perfectly with normal use. it can easily run for at least 2 days without recharging battery and smoothy as well.

You require an unlocked bootloader for that.
You don't NEED an unlocked bootloader for root.

This is the problem here, your phone does not like iOS users.
Just kidding, any of the solutions above (rooting and removing unnecessary stuff or reflashing ) should solve your issues.
Good luck !

I used to have the same problem. Facebook Integration was the problem... I disabled the sync and removed the photos being synced with it. Also removed most of the widgets and the phone wasn't lagging as much as before. I ended up rooting...

You do not have to worry about them because they are not using any CPU
check battery information and you'll see that they don't appear to cause any problems
if you are using Advanced task killer then exclude them instead of killing them, because it will use a lot of CPU every time they start up again
Aaaaaarrgrrrrggghhhhhh.... You only need worry about CPU hogs.. not Memory.. android will clear the memory they use if it needs it.

ok to be honest, I dont care how many times you write out that android will clear memory for others programs. Ive seen this line beeing used more times i can say android in one day.
Ive experienced in real life that the more memory i got free, the faster apps open. Apps run smoother and so on.
Sorry about beeing rude, i dont really mean it. Im just trying to state facts about my experience with android
Anyhow i would guess we need a rooted device to completly remove theese apps from starting at all?

Its definitley true about android clearing out the memory it needs. Ive found if im down to around 40 ish free memory and start a game such as nova, if I end it immediately I usually have around 100 free

If more memory is necessary to run a program (e.g. nova), unneeded programs are deleted/swapped from memory. This is done all the time.
So think about the fastest way:
- free ram with taskkiller, start new program
- start new program and let android free ram
I would wonder, if you're faster with taskkiller

[Q] Windows Phone 7

I was wondering, now that the bootloader has been cracked, is it possible for WP7 to be installed on the Xperia X10?
**Please no "windows is crap" or "why would you want that?" stuff, I've seen my fair share.**

It is just bypassed.
Although I dont know much about wp7,at least I know it is not linux based.

Yeah, I've tried them but they just aren't as responsive as a real WP7 handset. 1GHz processor doesn't really mean anything when the operating system hasn't been optimised - look at iOS and how snappy it feels even on older generation devices, then look at current generation android devices like the Xperia and you really notice how much it lags. I'm on a froyo miui rom and NEVER use it and my phone is always smooth as silk.
If you're still using one after 2.2+, you don't know what you are doing
linux/android memory management is boss
wp7 is not responsive, it just uses long drawn out animations to cover up lag/delay. I think it sucks personally

Insufficient ram is one of the dead flaw of our Xperia.
Even though you are using Android 2.2+,this flaw is stilo bitting our mind.
Yes,Android's memory manage sys does work. However,it has no doubt that some laggs can be experinced when such mechanism is working,I am talking about heavy use(available memory is smaller than 80mb?).
Killing some non-restart apps does make you feel smoother no matter what roms
You can see tha why wb's rom is very smooth and FAST?
Autokill is implempted in it.
Also, the definition of lag varies among people.
For me,unless the Xperia smooth lik iphone,I wont be satisfied.

have you ever used a mac computer?
Just because ram isn't showing free does not mean it isn't there. It keeps apps background but using no actual ram or cpu so they can be quickly opened. If it needs the ram it is easily freed up for other things instantly.
Free ram sitting there doing nothing is actually a waste on a linux based system

Of cous I have used mac,my home has one mac book pro.
I understand your point.Memory not free doesnot mean it cannt be used.
I am concerning the case that heavy use.
Even system freeze( correct me if I use this word wrong) those low priority apps, however,in such case, too much apps to be freezed will make laggy.
So,try it yourself, open msn talk pro, facebook, xda app, browser, poweramp with playing flac, dsp manager and large game(Heavy use enough?)
In the game, switch back to launcher, wow, shouls be laggy(Sys just do what it supposed to do.
Sometimes the memory manage mechainsm can not been done within in a short time, killing some non-restart may make you feel less laggy.
Compare the smoothness when the free ram is 30mb and 130 mb,give it a try
cheers,
L

It's not the RAM, it's mostly the CPU + FPS Cap that causes or x10 to be/look slow. SE hasn't put much work in our 2.1 firmware. Only 1.6 was some kind of work.

What would you like to see in a custom ROM?

As you know, the fact that bootloaders are unlocked leaves an open door for third party firmwares (custom ROMs) to be applied to the phone.
Usually custom ROMs expand the functionalities of the phone and correct some of the software shortcomings. Even though the phone is only recently in the market, there may be some feature wishes and some complaints already.
In short, what features shoud a custom ROM add and what shortcomings should it correct?
I will start:
With the not-so-last gen processor the Play has, it is probably necessary to be able to overclock it.
I would like a minimal ROM (aka without bloatware) as it seems that the booting time of stock ROMs is incredibly high and it is caused by bloatware.
I don't have the phone yet (it's on its way ^^) but I have read things about the brightness setting being too dim and not changeable.

I think he's refering to Internal Storage rather than RAM.
Since we suffer from very low internal storage, it would be great if a new ROM would provide something similar to the app2sd application (forces apps to install all data to SD). Might be a big ask though?

Sure you can move most app data to the SD from settings AFAIK. Bit of a pain though so installing to SD automatically would be nice.

Yuck, I got that wrong I thought app2sd allowed the footprint part of the installation to be mostly moved to SD. Kinda hoped the 30Mb of Asphalt etc cud be reduced to <1Mb or sumthin. Daft now that I think of it.
I agree then, no point in app2sd cuz I manually move the data when I install stuff anyway.
Admin, can someone wipe my replies to this cuz it's only taking up space on what shud be a valuable thread!!
1, faster boot-up time.
2, ability to pick the games you want to have in the games launcher (or a new launcher).

As I hate the original android app2sd... as all widgets get broken by this method...
From what I've heard, since Verizon has fallen asleep.
1. Bare bone rom. Like to where you have to install gapps and other stuff. Only to have the apps android comes with.
2. R1 as take picture and L1 as focus.
3. Ability to add any shortcut to the "game app," forgot what it was called. Whether it be a app or game.
4. No overclock applied. Let the user add a overclocking app if they want.
5. Power control widget in the status bar.
6. And supper user of coarse

i want a stock android tbh, STOCK; and of-course, an overclocking module
id love an option to disable data traffic automatically when the phones screen is turned off, if this could be built into a custom stock gingerbread rom. the reason that would be awsome is cause it would double your batterylife and save using a widget and having to manually turn it on and off wasting time.
also R1 for taking picture and L1 for focus
having a battery percentage in the status bar would be amazing ( i know theres apps to do this but again if it was built in the rom as stock)
I would love a better keyboard, i came from an iphone and androids keyboard is just not accurate enough.
thanks in advance whoever takes the time to make this possible i understand it takes alot of time and effort to help others but rest assured it also makes many people happy . I wish sony would have released this phone in a more polished state it feels half finished and fragmented with all the apps and games markets

The solution in this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658699

maybe you should try some apps as "greenify" or "clean master" as they dont need root.. Idk if they fix something with your problem cause i never used 4.3 for more than 2 hours... but you still can try.. you can free more ram by disable your widgets too ..
low ram, lags & freezes all the time. poor multi-tasking also. 266 really does eat dirt

Many people say SuperCharger has only placebo effects. I used to think the same way. Until I got 4.3 update from Sony with its poor ram management.
Few days ago I installed SuperCharger MOD with service.jar patched. I used to have launcher redraws, keyboard disappearing, etc. Especially when I open heavy ram earwr app like chrome. Now, I rarely have these issues. I suggest you to try it out. I am now happy with my Xperia SP.

my main problem is screen flickering like a pulse every 1 second... everywhere.. in ui,games,photos.. even in cwm.. i cant fix it i have tried EVERYTHING .. differend kernels differend roms... 4.4 liquid rom with nayan kernel do the same :S its very annoying... but with 4.1.2 all works perfect...
266 is a piece of crap. when I bought the phone I upgraded right from the start to 4.3... and almost returned it to the store. but then I decided to downgrade to 4.1.2... man, its like heaven. best rom ever lol
When at 4.1.2, the song app will be stopped once i open chrome for browsing less than one song,
now at 4.3, the song apps will only be stopped/closed after 6 or 7 songs..
Although is an improvement, but i belief it is still a problem for android 4.3 for SP
I am back to stock .254. Avoiding all those bloatware prefering dolphin, shuttle music player, etc. So far, encountering no issues and system is fast. And I'm still resisting the urge to flash rooted 4.3.
In .266 everything is bad.
1)Ram management is 1big problem
2)volume bar disappeared
3)call starts with loudspeaker On
4)Camera..Maybe Sony installed 2.0 mp camera and telling it's 8.0 mp.
5)etc.
Sent from my C5302 using Tapatalk
On my 254 - I greenify those apps which never exit even when I close them. And I freeze those not used.
Today, i spent 1 hour on music and 30 minutes fiddling with my calendar. Lost 7% (only?) battery...
Don't know - maybe 266 may increase its battery span as well if I apply the same processes...

As I know, Android will use RAM as many as possible. It is not same as Windows. When the phone needs more memory, the system will close background apps and unused apps automatically. So the Task Killer, Task Manager, Clean Master, is SUCKS. It will make your Android more slowly
Greenify will hibernate the apps, but I think the system will still uses half of memory if I'm not edit the build.prop, needs ROOT to edit :'(
So i send this to sony forums

It sound like a real big problem if u (well, all we) says '4.3 have a lot of bugs' but actually a don't think that ppl in that forum take it serious when the poll have just 59 voters xD

they allready know that its a bug-fw.. every day people complain about problems on 4.3... and what makes me mad is that for almost all problems the solution is "do repair with sus" or "do factory reset" or "go your phone to local service" xD nvm at least the confirmed new bug fixing update... i can w8 for ever.. i just hope they will fix ALL the bugs..

Yeah sure, my point was that it would be cool have a lot of voters in that poll xD, so Sony could have a clear view (with external data) of whats is more important and what is actually causing issues with the XSP...
And... sadly my hopes are not so big with the new frimmware, it was more than 2 weeks and is not released yet....
In my case my major bugs is battery drain in 3g (the sonyericcson.wakeup thing) and ram management... and actually, a repair with PCC taked off all other bugs for me, and I did it only once xD

How do I make my Moto X Play lagg free?

Hi Guys,
I'm using the original stock rom but rooted it and now I have installed xposed, gravity etc. I also have approx 100+ apps ( including games ) in my phone installed at the moment. 3 Google accounts for Clash of Clans. I also have layers installed and using blue theme. I've also got games like Asphalt 8, deer hunter, dead trigger 2 like some big games maybe and it works flawlessly.
I've been using the same ROM from approx 1-2 months now and didn't change anything. It works fine but from few days, it started lagging, slow. I dnt know the issue and i seriously need a little help.
In my previous thread, i did not get any response so i am giving some more details.
Any suggestions please?
For some reason people just don't want to talk on this topic..
Well not 100% lag free but the best for me has been resurrection remix rom with squid kernel
Do remember u will be trading a lot of battery life for that performance boost
your requirements scream high end specs which the x play doesn't offer. ironically, the x 'play' is not really a phone for playing heavy games. 2gb ram and sd615 is mid-range at its best.

Well there's an app in the market called SD Maid its just like Tune Up Utilities but for a phone. Try that app it will clean the phone. I normally use it when I feel my phone laggin and so far it has worked for me. It is a paid app though.
Hope this helps.

Mr. I understand that you don't want to help! That's the reason u don't reply me in other threads as well, coz you think this phone isn't for me? LOL!!
I am happy with my x play, and everyone has issues and to solve them this forum is there to help ppl and not giving suggestions like this phone is not for me etc. If you can't help! don't even reply just ignore? simple eh? I guess from now on you shouldn't even see my posts, threads etc. coz it will be useless for you? Get a life Mr K.Khiladi

There's nothing like LOL in that. If you knew what you are doing with your phone you wouldn't have to make a thread for making you device lag free.
Since the time moto has updated the OS to latest, there have been just battery life problems not a single lag problem as I keep a close eye on the forum sharing whatever I know.
You have installed 100+ apps, sync 3 Google accounts for a game and have such large amount of games. Your internal memory has most probably filled up by now and showing signs of lags and that's normal. I am sure you won't have cleared the cache also. Although layers are not responsible for lag until it's a heavy layer theme having custom background.
Reading about android and other problems can tell you these basic things for which a separate wouldn't be needed.
You need more performance, then move to a custom rom at the sake of battery life.
You need balance, then use stock rom.
You need more battery life but want to remain on stock, use custom kernel

hahah no, i like to keep them as and when required, depending on the mood i can use it and don't have to install it again.
Also, the 100+ apps are now 65 as i removed someone unwanted apps.

Sometimes when I don't have a answer, I don't reply. Its that simple.
Yes I am using RR rom. Its the best keeping in mind the customisation and performance.
All custom Roms have same battery life.

I had the wifi getting off on screen turning off because of dirty flashing.
Make sure you clean flashed and don't reboot in between flashing rom and Gapps.
I don't have any such problem till now.

Have you also tried a startup manager to disable unwanted apps to load in memory at startup. This can really make a difference between smooth and laggy experience with 65 apps installed and pre-loaded in your memory.

@K.khiladi has given you some good advice!
I don't use RR myself (I have in the past but currently on Marshmallux) so this might not be applicable but if you have "Running Services" option in "Developer Tools" you should check in there and see if there's things running that you wouldn't expect. I've found some games to continue running in the background weeks after last playing them because they set themselves up to run on startup (where @Sickaxis79 's advice will now help you).
Anyways, just a thought. Also, I've found that I can't rely on too much shortly after a flash, I feel like it takes a few days/reboots before things seem to settle down.
