A way to get the XDA app without buying it? - HD2 Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting an

I have WP7 on my HD2 on AT&T and am able to access the market and install non-paid apps just fine. However, I cannot buy apps because the system won't accept my credit card. And I cannot use the carrier to buy apps through because it requires a 3G/4G network. It won't process a purchase through WiFi or Edge.
I want to buy the XDA app but am not able to. Is there another way to get it? By the way, I have already bought the XDA app on my legitimate WP7 phone. However, I cannot install it on this HD2 phone because I have to use an alternate Live account with my HD2.

I think there's a free version of boardexpress on which you can load up xda for wp7.

Problems buying foreign apps?

So, I would like to purchase Root Explorer, Beautiful Widgets, and ADW Launcher EX but the purchase refuses to take.
My credit card is fine but the sale always gets held up and then refused. Anyone else run into this?
Buying domestic apps hasn't been a problem, only when I try to buy European apps.
Many US banks block purchases using certain currencies.
I have this issue as well.

I use a Visa Debit, and its blocked all my international purchase attempts. Good safety feature, but you would probably have to call your CC/Bank to authorize it prior to the purchase.
I tried buying the same items but the option to charge my account was always grayed out

Yeah, for domestic apps, I can charge my T-Mobile account.
Thanks for the info. I'll try calling my bank. Maybe I'll start a European checking account...

Streak security?

There are apps I would like to buy, but I flat out don't want to enter a credit card number into a phone. You can send a text and the phone company will donate money to a charity and add it to your bill. Why can't we buy these small apps the same way?
Hopefully coming soon. Not yet available in the Market for some strange reason.

Using Paid Apps On Multiple Devices

I've used many free apps on my EVO but I've never purchased an Android app. What I'm wondering is... If I buy an app for my Nexus, can I use it on my Evo also or do I need to pay for it a second time? Are paid apps somehow tied to the serial number of a specific device?
You can use your apps on any android device registered to the same play account.
Thanks!

Bypass cellular activation?

Hello!
I have found this phone on amazon for 150 dollars and have decided I want it. However, I cannot afford a data plan nor do I need one. So I was wondering if there is a crack or bypass with the activation screen and can just use wifi? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I originally bought my DVP from Dell (without a contract) and happily used it on Wi-Fi only for several months, so you should be able to use the Wi-Fi without a data plan. Just slip your current SIM card and go to work.

I'm guessing this is a question specifically about AT&T forcing a data plan on you otherwise this wouldn't be an issue. Either that or shirtlessrabbit4 had a Palm webOS device, which is the last handset I remember which required a data plan to activate.
I don't know how AT&T checks if your using a proper smartphone, unless they just reference it against a database of IMEI numbers of AT&T branded phones. If that is the case, maybe you should buy a T-Mobile Dell Venue Pro, having a IMEI on record with only T-Mobile?
T-Mobile will require you to have a data plan, too... a pay-as-you-go $1.99/MB data plan. If you switch your data connections off in the settings, you won't have to worry about these insane charges, but you also won't be able to send MMS messages, even though MMS data is not metered.
The best option may be Simple Mobile or Straight Talk which have prepaid $40 and $45/mo monthly unlimited plans, respectively. Each "unlimited" plan has an actual data cap of around 2.5GB/mo. I don't think you even need to have your phone carrier-unlocked to use it on either MVNO, but DVP unlock codes are essentially free now anyway.
I noticed that there are a number of ebay sellers with "buy-it-now / or best offer" listings around $150 for condition new DVP handsets, so you could potentially score a lower price. Keep in mind that ebay buyer protection ensures your satisfaction, even if the seller does not accept returns as a policy.

Well my normal phone is on Verizon (I'm using it now), but I just wanted a windows phone 7 device to use as an alternate device to mod or use at home. So I meant more like no activations at all and no plan, just the device and on a wifi network. I guess in the open I should've said I can't afford ANOTHER data plan, and I surely don't need another phone number, just want to use a dvp without charges

Could I simply do what you did and just nix the sim card to get what I'm trying to do? Sounds simple

You might want to consider getting an HTC HD2 or a Samsung Focus. Seems like all the custom ROM development are on those devices. With the HTC HD2 you can dual boot Android ICS and WP7.5 Tango (with sideloadability, lots of mods, or non at all if you prefer.) The Focus is a standard Galaxy S handset with Windows Phone on it, and is easy to sideload apps on using WindowBreak.
Unless the keyboard is the draw to the DVP, I'd go with one of them.

Well the dell is cheaper and has the keyboard and a decent sized amoled display, so that's what caught my eye as well as price. BUT..... I will go for either of those if thats what it takes to get wp7 without a plan of any kind. I also saw the HTC arrive but more expensive........ could that work for what I want?

You can use any WP7 handset without any kind of voice or data plan. As far as price of the Samsung Focus, you might want to check used ones on ebay. I once bought a used Samsung Focus for $60 in perfect condition except for the broken SIM card reader. That kind of thing would be perfect for you. The Super AMOLED screen of the Focus is better than the AMOLED screen on the DVP, too.
Since you're interested in the Arrive and the Dell Venue Pro, I assume you're dead-set on a keyboard. All I can say is that if I didn't use my keyboard for text messaging so much, I'd definitely abandon the DVP in favor of a thinner phone.

Root HTC One UK

Im from the UK and own a sim free htc one running on payg giffgaff network. I want to root the device and also want to be able to put free cracked apps like tom-tom onto it...
I read guides and watch youtube videos and it states this is for at&t or verizon but these are american networks...why does the carrier matter when its the device you are rooting...
Hopefully someone can enlighten me as Ive been used to iPhone for so many years but htc one is far better, just want to be able to get the most out of it....
Coming on here openly saying you want to use warez isn't going to get you any friends on here...ever thought about paying for an app?
Thread closed.
Talking about getting paid apps for free on XDA is considered warez and not allowed.
