Anyone know if we use the built hotspot tether on the Nexsus S. Will it be blocked from AT&T? I use the tether maybe 4 times a month. If so then I would root to install Android Tether. Thanks for any input. I just got the Nexsus S last night.

It didn't work on mine
I Bought one a few days ago and when I turned on the wifi hotspot feature the phone disabled the 3G radio I was not too keen on rooting a brand new phone so I took it back the only reason I got the thing was because my N1 had so little storage but Sind rooting my n1 I can run/store apps on the sd card so no real reason to keep the Ns plus I can Still tether when needed.
Hmm I actually haven't tried to use the built in Hotspot. I actually don't mind rooting the phone, but I just want to be able to root and don't really want to install custom ROM's at this time.

Did you buy the one from Best Buy? The i9020a that was sold elsewhere was able to wifi tether without any issues, but perhaps at&t has stopped this while allowing it to be subsidized. Wouldn't ever think they would until the NS4G removed the feature in 2.3.5.
If you haven't actually tried, just turn it on and see. It shouldn't automatically switch your plan, if they have indeed blocked it, should just indicate you need to.

Yes got the Nexsus S at Best Buy last night. Just tried the hotspot and doesn't work. :-( it starts up, but then about 2 seconds later the 3G icon goes away and no data. It does stay connected to my tablet but no data. So I guess its blocked.
So I now I have to search to root the Nexsus S to install Android Tether. Only reason I kind of holding back is, I just noticed that the phone is charging to only 95% and stops charging. So might have exchange it or just return it.

That is normal behavior actually. There is nothing wrong with your phone. Many phones do that to prevent damage to the lithium-ion battery.

Thanks, good to hear nothing is wrong. This is the first device that I have that stops charging at 95%. I would rather have it charge to 100% to get the extra time when on the road. I have the SGT 10 Tablet and charges to 100%. Anyone know if other Nexsus S phones also charge to 95%? Or is there something I can do to have it charge to 100%? Thanks again everyone.

Have you let the battery die to 100% yet? Android devices are notorious for needing to completely cycle down and back up a few times. I have had terrible battery readings in Samsungs in the past.
As far as tethering goes, when you switch it on, it loses all signal? How long do you wait after switching it on to see what happens?

I haven't let the battery completely drain, but from others it charges only to 95%. This is some kind of bug in the charging software in the phone. If you charge the battery on a external battery charger it will charge to 100%. The other way I was able to get to charge to 99%, was leave the phone display on and it will charge to 99%. As long as this might get fixed, I am ok with it.
Yes pretty much I switch the tether hotspot on and the 3G icon goes away within 2 seconds. I am able to still connect my SGT 10 tablet or HTC Flyer to the Nexsus S, but no data. So I thought that this phone was unlocked and AT&T didn't have access to the built-in hotspot?
I am trying to find out the easiest way to root the phone so that I can install Android Tether.
try wireless tether for root users(when rooted) http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
it should work problem free, and att cant disable it.
Pre root pdanet doesn't work? Rooted wireless tether doesn't work? Phuck att for crippling their phones in all sorts of ways. I feel bad for the poor souls still there. They just gave unlimited data the axe and now the smartphone customers are screwed. You can come on over to sprint. The water is fine (for now).

Wireless tether as we know it on stock Android is disabled in the 2.3.5 update for the Nexus S 4G. Their unlimited plans are indeed true unlimited, which is commendable, but I have to think they asked for wireless tether to be disabled.

The NS doesn't charge to 100%, it's done to extend the life of the battery, lots of Android phones do this. Plus the extra 5% will give you maybe 5 minutes? Don't worry about it.

Root then wireless tether app, simple as that. Then again, they might be doing you a favor. Take the restrictions away and you'll hit the bandwidth limit in no time, then maybe throttled down to dialup speeds if you're lucky or charged some crazy ass rate like $10 per 100megs over your limit. I finally convinced the gf to get much more, for a little more a month, on sprint and stop getting nickel and dime'd to death on att. It's like (almost) everything is a la carte there.

I finally rooted and installed the android wireless tether and it is only Ad-Hoc. I was hoping it was infrastructure type. I have been using MiWy on my iPhone 4 and works great on my HTC Flyer and SGT 10 Tablet. I know I can root the tablets and install the WPA, but was hoping more of a infrastructure mode wireless. Anyone else know if there is such a app? I don't mind paying for the app, as long it works. Thanks again.
It won't do infrastructure. The only one I know of was the htc evo 4g. I don't know anything about the flyer but I do know the galaxy tab can see ad hoc once you replace the wpa_supplicant file. It's that way for the 7" tab. I don't know if it is the same for the larger tab. The xoom needs some mod to use ad hoc too.
I'll drop in my own anecdotal evidence. My nexus s doesn't tether either.
It's the i9020a, purchased from best buy, running on AT&T. I get the same issue stated earlier - turn tethering on, a few seconds later the 3G symbol goes away, data symbols turn from green to white, no data connection on the tethered device.
I guess I'll have to try out rooting and go that route - not a huge deal, just irritating.
This is complete **** though. I didn't buy this on a contract from AT&T and I do already pay them for a data plan. I'm sick of these carriers doing stuff like this.
I see the point that people are making in this thread, but come on, it's a Nexus; if you own one and are on XDA, you have to flash a ROM. It took me all of 15 minutes to get a new ROM on mine. Tethering problems over.

Maybe now that there are units in reviewers' hands somebody can try putting in a SIM without tethering plan and see what happens? Has anybody asked?
This also brings up the question...Cant we just blow up the google android browser and use that then since its not against at&t rules haha?
The way the release reads, it implies that using the firefox browser on wifi will be fine, but it's not spelled out.
Ok so using fire fox is tethering so possibly all other browsers will be ok ........ if it winds up that the device being plugged in its self beings the tethering process it would only be a matter of time before it would get cracked ........ I say this because how will Tue phone know when its using firefox on or off the dock if the dock isn't sending its own coding into the phone if that made any sense ....... the dock is obviously putting the phone into dock mode but is this dock mode the reason the phone would register the laptop as tethering?

From what I understand you can get the laptop bundle with tethering, and then cancel tethering afterwards and just simply use wifi. The laptop dock does not require 3G/4G data to be used, but to get the bundle discount they want you to sign up for tethering in hopes you'll keep that service.
I see and if that is the case I will get the bundle but I am wondering if the laptopdock omits a signal or something coding idk that is sent to the phone to say it needs to be tethering

If that were true, I could understand the tethering requirement, but the multimedia dock doesn't seem to have anything in it other than a USB hub, and Moto said that the laptop dock is just a battery, screen, keyboard, and trackpad, no circuitry other than that.
If I was going to get a laptop dock this is the one I would go with this one even comes with a bigger screen and a dvd drive.

The tethering issue is just the software AT$T has on the phone.
The phone is not going to come with tethering over usb. The only way you will be able to get it is by slide loading an app. for it or paying AT$T.
Not even considering the laptop dock its a $200 device that they want $500 for.
I will buy a $300 netbook with more features.
Not even sure about the atrix yet it will be months before it has any custom roms, granted its the badest ass phone on the market,or will be.
However I could buy the inspire and root and rom the same day, use wifi hotspot to connect my netbook.
I just cant decide.
Atrix will only be bad ass until tomorrow ( the 13th mobile world conference) when the galaxy s2 is shown that's going to blow everything out of water the only thing is that its for tmobile and I like my att so idk what I'm going to do hopefully we can just implement a modem and it will work for att but the atrix dock I'd out of hand 500 can get you a 13 inch laptop with 4 gb ram 500 gb hdd HD screen bluray reader writer windows 7 64 bit an Intel i7 quad core mobile .......... they dibt eveven comapare 700 for both or even 500 for the bundle? You'll need to, since it will suck like the other Samsung phones, and it won't ever get any updates (based on the history of the Galaxy line so far). My feeling is that Samsung's dev team is always going to be too busy working on new stuff to ever release a freakin' update for their phones. They've lost me as a customer, that's for sure.
Well the galaxy s and the epic are getting or got Tue froyo update already and what's better hardware or software update keep in mind we can't update hardware but software we can do every and anything to it? So its a no win situation but I love samsungs and motos so idk what to do

Well at least they're finally getting froyo, although I've heard that before. I like Samsung's hardware a lot, but the support has been horrible as far as updates, thank God for XDA! The Galaxy S line is supposed to be a top of the line phone.... well to me it shouldn't be running outdated software. The Nexus S has nearly identical software, and it runs Gingerbread. Why doesn't the rest of the Galaxy S line? The ROM dump from the Nexus S already runs on the Captivate (although buggy), so if Samsung took a small amount of time to fix the drivers, it could be released. The least they could do is open source the drivers so XDA devs could do it.
If you're trying to choose which to get, I'd say wait and see. I'm unhappy with my Captivate, though, and had to buy my wife a Dell Streak since she hated hers so much. I'd buy one too if I wasn't waiting for the Atrix.

So this is not a completely phone-related question.
I will soon be moving, and it's been a year since I started with Optimum, so they are going to charge me extra for my internet. I am going to have only one roommate instead of two, and I'm broke as ****.
I'm sure you've heard this story hundreds of times before.. I need cheap internet, as fast as I can. My phone is rooted and I can use it, but of course, it comes no where close to where I need it to be. Leeching internet from Sprint is only good as a temporary solution, but not a long term one.
I am going to live in an area where there's no Optimum WiFi coverage and no other cable companies - no Fios either. What would you offer? What have you done that has worked for you in the past? I need some advice please...

I recently just bought the nexus 7 and I totally regret laughing at those silly people on the train holding their 7 inch because I am now one of them. This thing is godsend. But I recently sold my phone and I am now looking for a phone just to tether to my nexus 7. Do you guys tether on the go or pine for a free WiFi?
At first I wanted phone that can tether my 3g network comfortably without freezing up when I receive a message on my phone.
But after I tried a lte enabled s3 in one of the hand phone shops I'm now sold. . I'm looking to purchase the iPhone 5 just to tether and message because it is idiot proof.
So what do you guys use to tether? And what do you think of getting a iPhone 5 just for tethering? Because android has really bad tethering apart from HTC and its WiFi hotspot app which rocks.

Listen, I wouldn't get a iPhone, (My opinion). They are way over priced in the first place, let alone just for tethering and messaging. 2nd, Apple totally locks you down, so you will regret getting an iPhone if your a tech enthusiast.
As you said, HTC tethering is amazing, and I have never had a single issue tethering my HTC One X to my N7, and to be honest, it feels broadband speed. I'm not saying you should get a HTC One X (YES YOU SHOULD!!!) but as you said , HTC are great for tethering, so I would have a look at your HTC options my friend, + the N7 and HTC are like husband and wife.
I sold the one x I didn't really like it maybe because it was just so good. There wasn't anything I could do to tweak it haha. Viper x was awesome though.
I wannptntontether easily and message easily and I need quick compose which none of the android apps have.. jail breaking bite SMS and tether is all I need. One more thing I am sick of changing Roms cause of my itchy hands and iphones can stay on one released for ages once it stabilises

Android are actually WAY better for tethering, at least the ones I have used have been (Xperia Arc S, Xperia S, HTC Desire).
The best bit? Tethering on Android is invisible to the network provider, but on iphone, they can tell and charge you for tethering.
I wouldn't get an Iphone5 anyway, it's last-years Android specs for double the money.

I'm totally confused here.. You don't want Android because it's too good, do you want a ****ty phone?
Anywho, just get an Android phone with 4.x, use bluetooth tethering. It uses very little power and you don't even have to fiddle with it, once you pair and enable BT Tether you don't have to do anything else, don't have to turn it on and off when you want to use it, etc, and when it's idle it uses almost zero power.
And BTW, it's okay to hold your 7 inch on the train? Creepy.
I tried to Bluetooth tether using the one x but it didn't work. Its paired but the connection couldn't be shared even though it says it is available mow

Hey all, I'm thinking I'll soon take the plunge to Gingerbread. For those who have flashed already, what are your thoughts? Any pros/cons, other than the standard benefits of Gingerbread?
I'm running stock gb right now, rooted, no CWM, no themes or mods and it works fine.
Cons:
Little harder to get Root(for me anyway) , doesn't play nice with superuser so had to switch to supersu. Some issues getting busybox installed and binary updated.
Mine shows 329mb of ram, so "lost" 9mb? Hasn't seemed to cause any problems.
Pros:
Ummm... It's gingerbread
Access to apps requiring 2.3, can watch tv now!
Love the new Batt stats and ram usage stats.
Did I mention it's gingerbread?
Definitely worth it, just make sure you do the calibration backup before you flash and should be no problems.

My phone was due for an upgrade tomorrow, so I figured why not, if I break it I can get a new phone. With that being said, I have to say there isn't much in terms of appearance that let's you know it is GB instead of Froyo. There is the ability to unlock into text messages or missed calls (that could have been done via lockers, but it is a lot smoother now). My weather app never worked and all of a sudden it is working again. The most impressive thing is the speed of it. I have Holo Launcher on my phone and it always lagged when going to the home screen. I haven't had that issue yet.
A couple of notes since it was my first "hooking my phone up to the computer to change software or flash" experience. The process went quick, no hang ups or anything like that. I had to call Verizon to get my phone calls working again, don't know why that happened. And I lost my 3G connection, but once again 20 minutes on the phone it was up and running. Less than 24 hours later, I am a happy camper. I have noticed that my phone shuts off sometimes without warning. But I haven't hit the power button on top and that seems to be working for now, in other words I wait for it to turn the screen off itself.
Definitely breathed new life into my old phone.
When I used this phone if the screen wasn't on when you plugged into the charger it wouldn't wake back up. This caused my to he late for work because I had a power outage at like 2am so it stopped charging then the power came back and my phone wouldn't wake so the alarm didn't go off. That was the only issue I had with gb when I used it. However once that happened I went back to stock. Other than that it was good. What phone are you thinking of getting?

Probably the Note 2. But the problem is that I have unlimited through Verizon and if I upgrade I lose that plan. It's not so much the unlimited I am worried about, but switching to the new plan actually costs me $10 a month. Over the course of a 2 year contract that is $240. Now if I buy the phone at full price I am ok, but I can't justify spending $700 on a phone.
As far as your issue, was that on GB or Froyo? I haven't had that problem, yet.
It was just on gb. Maybe I had a bad flash. I upgraded last month to a droid dna and I love it. After this phone I am never going back to samsung for phones. 3 people on my plan had the continuum and all went to HTC. Yeah I honestly hated my continuum at some times and other times I loved it. Though I held it for 2 years I agree with you I can't justify spending that much on a phone.
As for unlimited data that didn't bother me that I lost it. I never even used more than a gig when I had unlimited 3g was so slow I used wifi a lot. 4g is very fast but I still use my wifi when I can. There is a way to keep unlimited data my friend did it when he upgraded. I think you have to make a new line with unlimited data and transfer your upgrade to a line that has it. Something like that all I know is you can Google it if you want to keep it that bad. You may also get lucky and the rep may mess up and you keep unlimited this happened to my mom when she upgraded. Other than that to me 2gb of data is plenty for me.

Something like that all I know is you can Google it if you want to keep it that bad. You may also get lucky and the rep may mess up and you keep unlimited this happened to my mom when she upgraded. Other than that to me 2gb of data is plenty for me.

yeah it's not so much I need the unlimited, it's that I will be paying more a month by switching. How does that even make sense? I will be paying $10 more a month for less data. Only with Verizon right?
Me too, the way they have the changes set up I only get my corporate discount rate on my line so even though I can get base price plan equal after discounts it ends up being more expensive.

I went from unlimited to 2gb and I didn't have to pay any more than I was paying before. I'm not the primary line if that makes a difference.

I get the corporate discount, so that keeps the cost down for the most part.

I'm sure me and a couple other users are wondering about this. I have VZW primarily, but use a media net INT. HOX when I'm out of town and service drops off. I'm looking at tossing the HOX and going Nexus again. Anyone care to shed some light?

Yes it should work, Galaxy Nexus still works with medianet so this should as well

Not all GNex's still work on medianet. :/
If it does, I will buy it without thinking twice, giving the low US pricing.
Is there any more information regarding this?
It worked for a while but it seems people have been switched to smartphone data plans recently. Seems the jig is up.

There's already a few threads on this subject, and yes the jig is up. Quite a few of us got detected and bumped this past week. I decided to call in and change my plan back, just to see how long it'd last, I've actually managed to go for a few days now so far without being bumped again. But I imagine I'll get bumped again sooner or later, at which point I'll have to make some hard choices.
