OTA 2.3.4 and an unlocked Samsung Nexus S 4G - Nexus S General

I just got an unlocked Nexus S 4G for a friend who is visiting overseas. It arrived yesterday running 2.3.3 and it messages him that he had a system update available. Before I could stop him, he updated it. Did that mess up the 'carrier unlock'? How can I tell if it will still be unlocked when he gets home (Costa Rica) and if it isn't, what do I do to fix it before he leaves?
Thanks for your help and sorry if this has been covered....I am usually good to 'search before posting' but that isn't as easy on a 4 inch screen w Tapatalk!

That wouldn't be the Nexus S 4G. The Nexus S 4G is a Sprint phone, not a world GSM phone.
Anyway, it really shouldn't. The Nexus is really easy to hack.

System update?! I'm on 2.3.4 but apparently on getting an OTA. We'll see what happens.

Keep us posted.
If this real and it improves signal that would be amazing. I'm teetering on the edge of changing phones...

I feel stupid. Sorry guys! This was just the update from the previous OTA, GRJ06D.
I GOT SO EXCITED TOO!
Why would you get a notification to downgrade?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
he may have just gotten his phone and it may have come with the previous build version...When I got my Nexus S 4G a week or so ago, I bought it out of contract from someone that won it in a raffle...well that turned into a non updated phone and immediately had an ota that day.
Is it possible to downgrade? I heard on the non 4g s that they had better signal before the upgrade

Nexus S 4g

Hey guys,
In 2-3 months I'll be switching over from AT&T to Sprint. I currently have a Samsung Captivate, I've never really looked into other phones (especially from other carriers). Do you guys know if this is the phone to get once I make the switch?
Since 2-3 months is quite some time, are there upcoming new phone releases that you guys can suggest over the Nexus S 4g perhaps?
Thanks.
This is a great phone but the galaxy s2 comes out on the 16th for sprint so I would say play with both phones. See what u like more.

Nexus Prime, going to be the best phone out there, get that for sure. I am.

Thanks for the responses guys,
Looking at my time frame... between the 2, I'll get what's out during the time I make the switch.
It seems I'll be fine with either phone though. Though, I'm somewhat hoping my switch lands in December (It's what quick-googling shows the Prime coming out at?)

Any other Sprint users hoping for 4.0.4 today?

4.0.4 on 04/04 would have a nice ring to it. It appears like it's ready to go too. I'm just hoping that they don't wait until the Galaxy Nexus hits shelves to update the NS4G.
I'd have to admit, it would be clever; but with how much of a struggle to get ICS on NS4G has been I strongly believe its unlikely.
Not really since I already have it via CM9.....True Story.

The is a thread in development section for ns4g, Titled *official* where you can install stock unrooted 4.0.4 version and even keep the bootloader locked...
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
Hmmm already running 4.0.4 not seeing the need to have sprint push an ota
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
I just want an official radio from Sprint.
I'm hoping for the OTA soon so that when I take my stock 4.0.4 NS4G in for repair they don't ask me a bunch of questions. USB port is giving out and I was afraid if I let it get too far it'd break enough that I wouldn't be able to unroot and lock the bootloader. But I refuse to go back to GB
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
Seriously, I hope it's this week because this is getting a bit ridiculous. I too want to take my phone for some servicing lol but I have BB 4/3 installed. I am sure if I just lock the bootloader and have BB Sprint will never realize it's a custom ROM
Sprint not gonna give two ****s if its unlocked and rooted take that **** in for service already...its a dev phone u supposed to run customs...

Actually they will care. And it isn't a "dev" phone. Google doesn't support CDMA devices any longer and the Sprint version was never considered a dev phone. Btw, there's no problem flashing stock GB on the device and locking the bootloader. You can do that in 10 minutes and take it back to Sprint.

Officially they do. Many individual reps may not care but I see no reason to risk it.

And I know I could go back to GB but honestly I'm kinda bored of crack flashing. After a couple years of it I'm bored of backing up and restoring and doing clean installs, flashing the new new ROMs and spending more time messing with my phone than actually using it. Stock 4.0.4 meets all of my needs without having to root or mod. I'd like to see what it's like to stay on one ROM for a while. I'm sure I'll change my mind once CM9 starts adding in new features though

EDIT: And now I don't have to worry at all, the 4.0.4 OTA is finally official

Wanting cheap epic 4g

I have a Motorola electrify (rebadged photon) this phone is a beast but due to locked bootloader, no cm9 for me. I want ics.... also Motorola has best signal. Home it bounces back and fourth between us cellular and roaming verizon towers, us cell (1x no bars @ -119db) verizon (3g full bars @ -79db) if I got a phone with weaker signal would I stay on verizon instead of getting no service on us cell, only way to make it go back to verizon is turn off, reboot. If getting a Samsung phone fixes this, I want a Samsung epic 4g with the QWERTY keyboard, and a way I seen somewhere online where an epic was put on us cellular.... Any decent, cheap epic 4gs out there? Frank or email me [email protected]

There are Epic 4Gs at Cowboom.com for $79.99
I bought mine there grade 5 and screen was flawless and not any noticeable scratches but YMMV.
I used coupon code Cowboom5 for $5 off, dunno if still works.

Locked bootloader? What's that? Is that some kind of new Pokemon?
Haha none of that over here friend.
Loving my cowboom photon im unlocked but for now I prefer gb roms until hw acceleration fully works. (Im a big gamer) I do miss the epic but signal quality and speed is sooo much better. I ran ics on my epic since febuary and it was surprisingly easy to go back to gb. I just miss chrome thats about it.

Come up of the year.

Recently went to a yard sale and found a Nexus S for sale $5 Guy said his kid messed it up that it didn't turn on. I thought to my self what the heck and bought it when I got home I went on XDA. It was a simple thing all I had to do was access boot screen and do a reset. Working great..
But now i have a question to any who read this. Now so far all I know is that is Sprint Nexus S but I see there is also a 4g I know its a dumb question but where would I find it. Now my new mission for the week is finding out before I start flashing Roms. So far I have a Galaxy 2, a Nexus S, hopefully soon Galaxy 4 and the phone that started my addition Galaxy S Captivate.
Any one have any good ROM,apps, and kernal recommendations would appreciate.

Why don't you go into system settings, about phone will tell you the phone model. I doubt flashing wrong one will jack it up though, just wont boot. The ns4g is CDMA network and ns is gsm, other than that very similar.
