Today I just got an unlocked G2 (a new rom needed to be flashed. It was stuck in a boot loop and they had no idea how easy it was to fix so traded my moto backflip and $25 for it)
I have AT&T. I'm running an miui rom and am really loving it. Plus I only like phones with a physical keyboard.
The only downside is I only have EDGE.
AT&T doesn't offer a high-end, dev friendly android phone with a physical keyboard.
My question is, is it worth having a 4G phone and only have EDGE?
I'm not sure if any phone is worth being stuck on edge.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Lol trust me I know. The only thing saving me is my wifi.
It's just the only phone out with a physical keyboard is the flipout, and that's not really booming in the dev community.
Do I have any other options?
Ya a couple years back I was using an unlocked iphone on tmobile, obviously was stuck with just edge. It was RIGHT at the precipice before edge became the mobile equivelant of dialup. I don't think there is any way in hell your gonna have a decent experience with just edge. Just take the huge profit you just made and flip it on craigslist for an Att phone.

That sucks. You need to get a Desire Z version A7275. It is compatible with AT&T 3G bands. It is also known as the Bell unlocked version.
Sent from my HTC Desire Z
I looked at the bell version and I don't have $400 for it, if I did I would go with that option.
I would just trade it for an att phone but I need a physical keyboard. (always had a keyboard on every phone to date starting with my sidekick 08)
I was looking toward the captivate but, I saw the a captivate with a custom rom vs a stock g2 in benchmarks, and the captivate wasn't ahead by much.
I'm stuck ):

Very smart! Thanks!
Unless you can get a trade for 850mhz DZ I don't think you're going to want to stick with it. You're printing money at this point getting the G2 so cheap so might as well try to get a trade up for a phone you can use 3G on. EDGE Is so painful.
Sounds like you wanted the keyboard, but if you don't absolutely have to have it you can just sell the G2 and put that towards something else. The Nexus S is offered on AT&T on contract now as well if you need it cheap.

Yea I know. I just checked my upgrade status. I'm due in October so if I can tuff it out two more months, I should have more options for me. Thanks for the help guys!
Try to find a Canadian who is using BELL and wants to upgrade their phone service to Globalive. Globalive *requires* AWS band (won't work without), so any phone from bell will not work at all. Get them to do a straight up trade.
Personally though, I couldn't care less about mobile data, as long as it'll do email. I say you're better off with an HTC VISION on Edge than you are with an iTrash.

buying a slide?
i currently own an Eris on VZW, and i was thinking about switching over to T-Mobile ( due to current promotions and pay cut ). With that being said the slide was the only device that caught my attention.
is it really worth it? i havent really caught the buzz about the device wanted to get some current user feedback.
Thanks!
-SoCal
Personally I love my Slide but if you have a few weeks to wait, for about the same money (depending on the mail in rebate) you can get the new G2 when it comes out
I really like my Slide and have had mostly good experiences with Tmo. I've never been on another carrier but I have listened to friends endlessly ***** and moan about Verizon.
Are you buying it to root and load roms? or just as a phone? The stock sense rom is a little bulky and sluggish. Most of the Devs bailed on the slide. Eugene, HTCClay and even though we have CM the wifi is very wonky. They either went to the Samsung Vibrant or HD2..... If you need a keyboard than maybe the G2. The rumor that it only has an 800m processor stinks. Its stepping backwards like the slide did. I have had the slide since day one. Rooted it first week and have loaded every rom out there. I feel like i did when i bought my intellivision or turbo graphix 16 or sega cd.........
I've had it for about four months and haven't had any issues that were not self inflicted (goatta love rooting ;-) ) . Just go into it knowing your not buying a top of the line phone. As nice as it is, and it truly is a wonderful device, buy it with the right expectations and you will be happy.

If you're going to spread your opinion, you should do some research first. Clock speed is irrelevant in this matter. It's a completely different type of chipset (Scorpion), that works much more efficiently and quickly than current Snapdragon and Hummingbird processors, according to the information we have.

IMO u should wait and get one of the two new phones that T-Mobile is fixing to come out with. This slide is only ok. Nothing bad to say about it (unless you wanna get choosy, like I am) but also nothing good to sat bout it if u know what I mean. Obviously there are better phones out there but not any that u can get from T-Mobile. This is just MY opinion so do what u want with it.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
I would wait for the G2.
Waste of money IMHO. The slide is dependable but very low end. I would stick with verizon as well. Better phones and better coverage (at least where I am) also not as expensive.
it is good if you must go with tmo but then again I would say consider some of their other models or wait for some newer phones. Phones always come around the holiday season.
lettin the hussy role on my MT3G Slide
Slide is Tmobile's current top offering.
Is it worth it?
Sure; yes.
Wait for the G2, or choose another carrier for their high-end phone.
But the truth -- is that the Slide is holding it's own with phones with better specs.
That's the hype you'll be hearing about the Slide (at least for a while).

Agreed, if you need a phone NOW the Slide is T-Mobile's best phone. If you can wait a bit, the G2 will be the way to go.
The Slide is a great phone, but the G2 is only gonna be 20 more, so I would wait the 3 weeks and get the G2. If I had known this was definately coming out in September back in June when I got the Slide I would have waited.

Agreed. I am actually debating on getting either the G2 or the Mytouch HD. Seeing as the G2 is definitively coming it within a few weeks, that looks more promising.

I've had my Nexus One since April, and right now after seeing the new Nexus S (which is some-what disappointing in terms of upgraded hardware) I've decided it's time to move on. I'd like to sell before the Nexus S comes out since I believe the price of the Nexus One will decrease. I'm currently considering the following: G2, Nexus S, Captivate, Galaxy S i9000, and Mytouch 4G. The problem I'm having is deciding, see I would really love to have a front facing camera which would come in handy for me but, the phones that offer it don't work with AT&T 3G (except the i9000). So, I would like to get a captivate or i9000, but I'm not really fond of the i9000's design nor either's Touchwiz & Samsung's updates. I would really love a G2, since I could easily sell my Nexus and buy one with money to spare in some occasions and it's a very attractive device with great build quality (except for that hinge issue), but again, no AT&T 3G and no FFC. The Mytouch has the FFC, and is a nice phone and all but probably the ugliest thing EVER in my opinion. The Nexus S has everything I want (except for AT&T 3g) but, I would probably have to shell out $100-$200 to get it. So, what I need is advice. If you were in my situation, which would you choose? Thanks!

Still in a contract for another year :/
if i was in your situation i would not sell for a couple reasons
u will get STRESSED going back to edge. i mean its ridiculously slow coming for a 3g one
In a couple months they will be releasing some kick ass phones..wait patiently ..regardless the n1 is already depreciated
You will be trading one of the most customizables phones for some that you are not sure if it ll get the same support
IF you sign up for tmobile you buy one g2 and get 1 free (just got an email about that)

Get a Desire Z from bell canada, unlock it, and that's your G2 with AT&T 3g support.
The one I am impatiently waiting for is the Motorola Olympus for at&t. They say q1 of 2011, which is just when my warranty is running out for the n1.
the nexus one is still one of the best phones currently out there. my opinion at least. i hope to keep this phone another year before i get another itch. til then i hope my N1 doesn't get any scratches.
I'm looking at the desire Z also for the next phone. I'd like the price to come a bit first though. I haven't found it for less than 650 yet.
Wait a month 2 c whats new in 2011...
Went from a Nexus to a G2 then back to a Nexus to make some extra cash to get rid of the keyboard.
Currently I traded my Nexus for a new Mytouch 4G.
It is a very fast phone, solid build, decent camera, and its 4G, not to mention it has some nice novelties like front facing camera and a hard button for the camera and 720p recording out of the box.
Alot of people complain about the UI but i havent seen much slowdown or problems with it. It's a pleasure to use and i have yet to remove the battery bc it froze.
I went from a Galaxy S to the N1.
The screen is definitely a BIG step up from the N1, both in responsiveness and quality.
The phone itself though, frustrating. Good hardware potentially but crippled by bad implementation. Out of the box they are laggy and unstable. The GPS is basically useless for anything other than telling you where you are at that point. Start moving about, and its gone. Then its the going into a coma for no apparent reason.
The N1 is probably just about a more dependable device. Not sure I'd go for the SGS over an N1.
I would try to get a dual core phone with vanilla android. So I recommend that you wait.
my advice is it sucks but you have to just wait for an ATT 3G version to come out. just wait for a nexus S with att 3g is your only choice. the nexus one is still awesome enough to ride it out for a bit longer.

Well, see im stuck in a dilemma. I can either a. sell my nexus one on eBay right now for $450 (offer I just got) and add $for a Nexus S OR b. wait it out. The only thing i'm afraid of is that the nexus's value goes down and when NS comes out everyones gonna be selling and their gonna be a dime a dozen....
SO, what do you guys think I should do? I have until tomorrow to decide to sell...
Personal finances are different for everyone. If U need the bread now for an upgrade, then sell at the best price.
I say wait it out. The Nexus one is going to get Gingerbread soon and the value wont depreciate as fast as you're afraid it will. In a couple of months it will be on a very small list of phones running Gingerbread and people will be willing to pay top dollar for it.
I'm in the same boat. I can upgrade right now but there's nothing on AT&T compelling enough to make me switch. Hopefully CES will give me something to look forward to. That LG Star is actually looking surprisingly good, as is the Olympus, and I definitely want Tegra2 on my next phone.

please help me out. I'm with rogers canada they are sending me iphone 4. There is no way ill use or open it cause of previous experience. So I'm gonna sell it for 500. Now if you had to buy any of this phone which you would get? Atrix, sgs2, dhd, or nexus s. DHD already available here and nexus s and atrix coming this month. Sgs2 heard somewhere at&t version will be available. So which you would get?
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
You are asking this in a Nexus S forum? What do you think our answer will be?
Do your research and get the phone that you want. We can't tell you what to get.
shop phones based on your carrier network frequency
it's useless to have a phone that can't do 3G/4G
Atrix is AT&T so you'd have to get one from the US and unlock it, which will be expensive if you don't go in person.
You're on rogers, you can't use the Nexus S on 3G until the AT&T version comes out which is probably soon, but no one knows.
SGS 2 is nice, but when do you realistically think it'll hit the US, let alone Canada?
You're in the Nexus S forums so of course people will be biased here. Most of us got a Nexus S knowing it would be a clean, stock android experience with no bloatware and lots of development and tweaking/hacking potential. Personally I'm done with carrier phones, the bloatware is insane. I've had a T-mo Vibrant and MT4G and I got rid of them within a month of use and went back to my Nexus One until the Nexus S came out. It's similar to buying a Dell desktop with a bunch of bloatware installed vs. building your own PC and having a nice clean system that you know is unaltered by some other goon. =)
I knocked my N1 into the toilet the other day. I took it out, dried it off, removed battery and sd/sim. Sealed it with rice in a tupperware for a couple of days. When I turned it on I was shocked. It worked! Just as good as new for a whole day. Problem is it hasn't worked since that day. Just get a flashing green and yellow charging light.
I called HTC and they gave me an estimate of $55 to $190 for repair. My dilemma is repair or replace.
I really like my wife's Nexus S and would really like to go to T-Mobile with her, but my N1 was ATT. Any suggestions?
IMO it depends on your contract with AT&T. If you're grandfathered in on unlimited data, I would stick with that. If you're not though, no reason not to switch for the Nexus S, it is the faster device and has a front facing camera.
I forgot to mention. I'm temporarily living in Brasil. I will be in the USA from May 10th to June 8th. That's my window for purchase or repair. Both of our phones are pure Google and stock. No contracts involved.

If possible, i'd go for a dual core phone! Few are out now so have a look!

This would be my worst nightmare. Have you looked into any used N1's for sale on craigs list of flebay?
Try a Mytouch 4g
I have both an N1 and a MT4G. They are both about as fast, same size and weight, but the MT has FM radio and a front camera. The MT runs on 2.2.2 and I use Visionary and Titanium Pro to temproot and remove the TMo bloatware, and Juice Defender to increase battery life.
I had the N1 up to 2.3.3 but Visionary, Titanium and Juice Defender all don't work on 2.3.3, nor does trackball wake (which is desirable to avoid failure of the power switch). Green Power does about as much as Juice Defender to improve battery life and does work on 2.3.3, so I have put that on my N1. Nevertheless I can see no advantage to 2.3.3. for the N1 and went back to 2.2.2.
I like the Sense interface and some other features on the MT and with Visionary you can remove the more egregious bloatware. You can also use any of a number of GUI apps to make the MT have exactly the same GUI as the N1.
So it's a tossup between the N1 and MT4g; both can be made to have the same interface, both same size/weight/screen; but the MT has forward camera and FM radio. Also the MT can probably be bought relatively cheaply now, as phones with more advanced processors are on the way.
I like my setup on both my N1 and MT4g well enough that if/when there is ever an update to 2.3.3 for the MT I will decline it, as I have done for the N1--at least until a version of Visionary that will let me temproot the device appears.
Jeffrey
Do you care about custom ROMs?
I really like the pure Google experience. I like to be able to upgrade as soon as new versions are released and be able to do it manually without waiting for the OTA. I also like a phone without having to deal with a lot of carrier issues. I really like what I hear about the Galaxy S ll but as I understand it only will be available with the Touch Wiz interface and you have to deal with carrier released updates for Android version updates. I really don't want to get involved with rooting and roms.
I enjoy reading about the different roms (and even considered rooting and using different roms at one time) but I'm able to all the customization I need with stuff available in the market or by 3rd party. I loved my N1. My only complaints were the lousy display and a little bit of the 3g issues. I guess the Nexus S solves those two issues.
I really value a lot of the opinions that are shared on this forum and would never consider anything other than Andriod. Just struggling to make a decision before next month.
can you give me youre broken nexus one please i will use it for my project, polishing the nexus one, ill just use the housing

If you are wanting a Nexus S, you can get an ATT compatible version. Negri Electronics sells an unlocked Nexus S for ATT 3G bands. Its $589, but that shouldn't bother anyone who was willing to put down $529 for a N1 back in the day, such as myself

i may come into an opportunity to get a g2x for my g2. would you trade? i know the g2x has some issues but i'm gunna flash it so it should fix most problems. plus dual-core, 4.1'', front facing cam, hdmi? seems like a pretty good upgrade.
any1 get a g2x after having a g2? howd you feel after switchin?
I got the G2x before selling my G2, I do miss my G2 though, great phone!
I traded my wifes mytouch 4g for another G2 (so I can go back if I want to).
I haven't had any problems out of my G2x but, some have had problems.
If you have the opportunity to mess around with the G2x for awhile to make sure it doesn't have any problems that have popped up with others, I would go for the trade.
Even better if they want to do even trade.
I say its definitely worth it. However if you use the keyboard a lot and can't live without it then well things change

Nope, it's not HTC. LG's always have buttloads of issues, and terrible software support. If you think HTC is slow with them, you won't even get them after 6 months with LG.
Never been a fan of LG when it comes to phones.. just bad experiences with them. I have no problems with the G2, so I don't see any real need to change it to the G2x.
Lack of qwerty will definitely hold me off from getting g2x

Definitely not worth it. Roommate has one and even after two returns its still a piece of junk even on stock rom. Random reboots, doesn't hold a charge for ****, lockups, white around the edge of the screen, and that's just touching the surface. The G2X looked really promising, but unfortunately people are having issues with it. I think it looks like a great device. I'm already seeing them for sale as low as $300 though. Its really a shame I thought this would be another good addition to the "G" line of phones for T-mobile.
I think some of the steam got taken from it when the Sensation 4G was announced as well.
If someone offered me one for my G2 I'd probably give it a whirl. I definitely don't think its a big downgrade or anything like that.

Build quality on the devices is amazing though. The screens used in them IMO not so great, but they are pretty sturdy phones, especially the 4g, so if the 4g slide is anything like the 4g as far as build quality then I'd get one, I'm not THAT much of a fan of the design, but it's a good upgrade from a G2 I think. Dual Core 1.2ghz and once it's rooted and we get CM7 running on it, it's going to be a badass phone. I definitely see the improvement over a single core phone when I used my G2x, even my Nexus S OC'd to 1.3ghz wasn't as smooth as my G2x, so I'm definitely eyeing that 4g slide.

Well I kinda got confused about it not having a keyboard. The G1 and G2 had keyboards, then all of a sudden they come out with the G2x from a different manufacturer with no keyboard. Idk.
LG hardware isn't the best, and I guess that's reflected in the current going sales price.
Having held the g2x I REALLY like the hardware, software is what is killing this thing.
