Ok I need a new laptop as my 17" Pavillion dv9410us is starting to die.
what I'm looking for.
1080p or 1080p capable display.
Blu Ray Drive.
15.5" - 18.8" screen
Lots of storage (needs lots of room for all those roms xD)
full size keyboard.
Good hardriver & videocard.
64bit.
I'll be using it for light gaming, doing stuff to my hero, and Video & Audio editing.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think this is what a Quad Core is generally used for. I might do a little multitasking.
My budget is $1000 try to keep it under that, but I'll take a look at stuff up to 1.1k, but no higher.
Thanks, oh yah OS doesn't matter I'm going to put Win 7 Ultimate 64bit or Linux when I get it.
Do not get anything with an intel chipset. I dont care if its a 5.0 ghz quad core laptop. The reason being is because Intel has generic graphic drivers also infamously responsible for the intel 945 chipset which is subpar Geforce 2 mx 4000 quality graphics. When looking for laptops always get Nvidia or Ati chipsets with modern graphics cards inside them such as the Ati HD series or Geforce 9 or Geforce GTX series video cards. If you end up with intel chipsets you will have a bottlenecked PC. I dont care what anyone else says to you if you get a intel chipset you just wasted money lol.
Gotta agree with him, ATI is the way to go. I'd recommend an HP laptop, just because..... they don't suck as much as Dell or others.

i have the Asus - Laptop with Intel® Core™ i5 Processor G60JX-RBBX05
its got everything but the blue ray its a beast of a laptop for 899 check bestbuy
If you are willing to spend some decent money, I can highly recommend a Sager. I got a NP8690 and have had no problems with it, and it plays everything I throw at it on max (L4D2, BC2, SC:C, etc.) I spent just about 2 grand and got a 820QM processor, 8gb of memory, a 5870M (dx11 graphics card).
Best laptop I have ever used, I doubt I will ever buy from a mainstream (dell, apple, hp) company again. ODM companies are the way to go.
Edit: And if I can speak from personal experience for a minute here, while I don't actually have anything against HP, they were the highest percentage of laptops I fixed during this past year at college. That could be that the people that tend to use them are idiots, or that there are more of them floating around, or it could be that they just suck. I don't know. Just saying. Never had one for myself, so I can't really say.
edit2: sorry, I missed the part about your budget. But I still think Sager is worth a gander, they have really REALLY great machines.
I've got a Toshiba Satellite A505-6033 that I got at Best Buy (A505 also available elsewhere). It's got an Intel chipset, but it's also got nVidia mobile graphics card that runs the games I've thrown at it so far very well. Those games would be Warhammer, Ultima Online (lol), and....well I guess that's it
It's got a quad core Core i7 720M and 4GB RAM with a 500GB HDD

I really wanted a 1080p so I can watch 1080p Movies on my laptop
I was looking at A Sony Vaio Laptop that was 1080p.
So should I be looking at an ATI processor, and an Nvidia GPU?
This one is 1080p and I liked it, the screen was a little small though.

Bang for the buck you are still better off with Intel processor and Nvidia graphics. Intel is still ahead of AMD in the processor dept...I am hoping AMD will come back as I was a big fan until the dual and quad core's from Intel came out and just smoked em......
I got this in March and have been very happy with it.

How does this laptop look to you guys.
I might be able to get it if i work for my Dad.
It doesn't have a blu ray drive, but it does have nice specs. If you can find one like this with a blu ray I'll love you
Here's a toshiba version, blu ray driver, but the HDD is half the size.

The tiger direct laptop doesnt spicify that it has a Sata hard drive, To me thats a potential deal breaker. Its got all the horsepower but the drive speed can bog down the computer and bottle neck it. also doesnt have a blueray player.

This laptop doesnt have quadcore but it has all the bells and whistles you would need for extreme gaming like the GPU ram has GDDR 5 . i would look for a laptop that has quad core with blue ray and video card with GDDR5 memory. also either SSD or SAta drive.

The tigerdirect is not Sata
I'm really liking the Asus, butt my friends over at Tech geeks online said that if I disable my page file it wont matter. He said I'd only experience slow deleting & file moving.
If someone can find me one with the Asus specs but sata I'd love them.
Blu ray is now optional.
Um.. dont ever disable the page file system.. Unless you have 8gb of ram you should always keep your pagefile even if you disable it and use a 8gb flash drive for swap you still need a swap no matter what. They probably suggested that you disable pagefile because you are possibly getting 8gb of ram with your laptop. Even then, there is no reliable reason why the pagefile should be disabled its there for a reason.

SONY VPCF117FX/B 16.4" Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit NoteBook
This one has blue ray, Geforce GT vid card, Sata drive 6gb of ram though but its worth the goodies you get, the expensive laptop in the list is mainly ram and hard drive and no blue ray player which is shocking i would go with the SONY VPCF117FX/B 16.4" Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit NoteBook and upgrade the ram on it to 8gb it will be worth the money and its a powehouse machine.
With all the talk of Intel breaking into the smartphone market
I ask, between AMD and Intel who would you want in your phone our tablet and why?
My answer its AMD, their apu's I find to be very impressive vs the atom or laptop core I series. Id love to have a Radeon HD 6400 series gpu to play my Android games on =)

Hands down amd. Basicly intel makes a hell of a cpu but graphics not so much. Amd is not to far behind intel. But imho they make the best graphic cards and have the best technology in the gpu. So if they decided to make tablet and phones cpu and gpu i think they will have be very good and being that its phone and tablet maybe some of there gpu tech can be used in the cpu since the cpu for phones and tablets work a bit different than a desktop cpu or laptop cpu for that matter. Sorry for the caps im at work i have to use caps all day
AMD is the best, all day, everyday
i'll stick with Samsung CPUs
they are the best right now in the phone market

I agree there, but with AMD llano and later bulldozer based APU, any processor gap between Intel and AMD will be gone. These two companies entering the mobile arena will make competition skyrocket, and that only means good things for us consumers =) they would push the drive for faster graphics and processors even quicker than it already its moving

Samsung, Nvidia, Intel, then AMD
Remember people you get what you pay for and AMD is CHEAP, and no I'm not impressed with their GPUs either
AMD is not cheap. They have graphics processors at all price points offering more bang for buck than the equivalent Nvidia offering.
Amd is cheap, well slower than intel
also keep in mind that AMD is bringing around their first major Arch revision since 2004, and also keep in mind that for a while AMD smoked intel with Athlon and Athlon XP aswell as with Athlon64, intel didnt regain lead till the core series. AMD GPU on the other hand are consistently offering more for your Dollar than NVIDIA, I have a Radeon HD4870 1gb and can still max out ALL my games short of DX11 specific features (tesselation, etc.) Intel processors since the beginning of the core series have been great, but their GPU leave alot to be desired. Until I can play Borderlands on an intel APU with a better framerate than an AMD APU I'm gonna go with AMD. If you can really name a single desktop application or game where there is a big enough difference between AMD and Intel (desktop as in common user applications) then you will get my kudos. Also your going to want to be looking into AMD and Intels new archs like bulldozer and ivy bridge. Bulldozer will be out in just over a week and we'll see what AMD has up there sleeve with their first major arch change in forever =] (and now that they will have all the instruction sets intel has also =D)
EDIT: and by difference I mean more than 10-15sec or more than 10-15FPS
I'd like to see a Cyrix chip in my next phone please...
intel.
anyone ran an ati/amd gpu on linux? yeah... as bad as or worse than samsung on driver support.

consider yourself lucky. i've never, ever had a problem with nvidia in linux. with ati, i tried fedora, opensuse, mandriva, and ubuntu. ubuntu would work in 9.10 but only the stock kernel (from the live cd), any kernel update would kill everything. finally i was able to get 10.10 installed, and 11.04 hasn't given me any problems. but i still can't run any other distro.
and sure, this isn't about desktops or laptops, but android is linux and if their driver support sucks in linux, i expect it to suck in android as well.
Ati/Amd gpu's are the best point blank nothing to it there should be no argument :-/

yeah but dont you think if they did enter that market they would provide the needed support for the android based devices? I havent had any problems for years with AMD GPUs and linux, and Every driver update I just install and go no matter kernel or distro I have used (I mostly use Ubuntu though). I guess it really is based on experience =P I see it this way though, as of right now you can max out Left4Dead 2 on an AMD APU, you get maybe 13fps on an Intel. The laptop market is where we can best compare, and Idk about you but if I'm getting a Tab or phone I'm not looking for something to crunch data (which we all know intel does better), I want a rich and smooth UI, games that look amazing, and light weight and low power consumption (IMO both companies are doing ALOT better with TDP but still have a ways to go)
I have had my shield now for a few weeks and I thought I'd share my opinion.
This thing is amazing. I do not understand why NVidia is not marketing this little machine. It's amazing.
I've got a 64 gig micro SD in it that has only 2 gigs free because I have it filled with ROMs
I have very few gripes about it.
1 - No camera. I really would have liked a camera for skype capabilities.
2 - R2 and L2 don't seem to be mappable on all the emulators. I think that is emulator problems not the shield itself.
3 - The lack of marketing. It's not very popular so developers are not really making many games strictly for the shield.
I have not played my PSP nor my exploited PS Vita since I got the shield. I honestly did not expect it to be this good. While the Vita has that super beautiful OLED screen, the Shield has a much better looking picture on EVERYTHING I have put on it.
This is my first android device. I have an iPhone 5, I may have to go straight with android from now on. This is great. I love how you can just use micro SD cards and you don't have to go spend a fortune on a memory card because you have no other choice.
This device is so highly under rated that it makes me sad.
I am actually looking into this. At $250, I say it's well worth it
I already ordered one from newegg for 250$ , t-shirt sucks though and I wish there would be WebCam

Yea. But in my opinion I think it is still well worth the price tag. Look how much the vita costs and then how much you have to put in it for games and memory cards. The Shield costs a lot less in the long run and it has much better specs.
Shield is the the best portable gaming system yet. With the absolutely best controller - real joystick.
Best speakers also. 64gb card cost 40$ vs 100$ vitas 32gb.
The problem is that n64 emulators are very slow, no dreamcast emu also.
Mame support is limited.
Only 2 hardware/software problem. Lack of vibration and slow start up. Sleep state kill the battery.
Well its actually 250$ + 3000$ Gaming Server (PC) with 6Core Xeon + 64GB ram + SSD + GTX 690 )))) so I guess 3250$ its kind of expensive )))

i5 + 4gb ddr3 + sshd + gtx650 above you can play with a good quality, first gaming on the small Shield display you dont need use AA, and you can play 720p (Shield display native resolution) and your games will still be nice and beautiful running medium quality or more, its less then us$3000.
I recently upgraded my PC to a gtx 770 with an i5 (+ram, SSD, etc) and paid less than $1000 if I was targeting the minimum specs streaming requires you could get away with under $500. $3k is so completely overkill on a system if all your doing is streaming. I bet most people can get away with just a GPU upgrade if they have a normal PC bought within the last 3 years.

If we're talking only about emulators, then I don't think its even close. I remember the PSP having a hard time with snes emulation. I also don't think a decent n64 emulator exists and playstation games look so much better on the Shield (retroarch). There's also a DS emulator for Android

The psp does not have the beautiful high def 5" screen. It also does not have the amazingly comfortable controller. The shield also runs the DS emulator and the psp does not. The sound quality, video quality, overall quality of the shield is leaps and bounds ahead of the psp.
Also, there are a bunch of my favorite games that I cannot map R2 and L2 triggers on the psp.

Hello,
that depends on what you want to do with your PC. The mainboard is the base and limiter for all other components except the power supply(in most cases).
Well, i only have a acer pre-built the motherboard is acers....
I want to use it for video rendering or gaming
It can run pretty much anything I think I've seen people upgrade it to an rtx and stuff
@Kenora_I if it was me, and I just did this upgrade 2 weeks ago and am loving it, If your 1tb of storage isn't a Nvme/M.2 I would do that. I had a 2.5 in sata had and for $80 on Newegg I got a WD 1TB sata m.2 and it's night and day difference. Boots in like 15 secs, instant response when multitasking etc. And I just use PC for everything but gaming. So coding/compiling is a mind blown difference lol
If I was you I would start saving for a new built to be honest, aim for a B550/B550M with a Ryzen 5600X for example. Video rendering and gaming will soon become a stretch on that system if it isn't already.
Assuming the power supply is non standard and not easily upgraded, the only real bottleneck that can be remedied is storage. Agree an M2 ssd would be best upgrade likely available.

I would build new since you have several things that could use an upgrade in the next year or two. Adding upgrades to an older oem board is just money you will never recover for an end result of a PC still in need of a mobo upgrade.
Building new doesn't have to be that expensive nor does it have to be overpriced ryzen. I threw together an example here . Room to expand RAM by 2 slots later if needed. Less than $600 bucks and could use your GTX 1050 until you get an email that it's your turn to buy card at MSRP.
EVGA's notify list works, may take 2 or 3 months but you can get a card at MSRP.
In my opinion it would be best to wait until prices falls down to regular prices.
But you may consider getting SSD and HDD as you've mentioned you would be playing games and 1TB isn't sufficient.
You can look for case or better case fan if needed.
Mechanical keyboard and Mouse can be consider too.
You haven't mentioned about the PSU you may also consider that if you are looking forward to getting power hungry GPU in future.
Get a cooler if needed if prices are fair enough for it. (if you get one then get one where you don't have to buy one if you choose to upgrade to latest CPU.
In my opinion this are some possible upgrade you can make with your currant build.
If in case you choose to make new build in future then don't upgrade anything in this build presuming that you don't have any issue with currant build and your build gets job done.
In short upgrade if needed or just don't upgrade besides storage.

I have been on the EVGA list since beginning of the year, the only email I got from them was to tell me they're swapping the model I actually wanted to a low hash model. Thanks EVGA, how about you just make me a GPU. It's been 6 months.

Must depend on model. I signed up in Feb. and didn't have the money when 1660 ti came up, resubmitted for 1660 super and got it a couple of weeks ago. It's gotta be model, location shouldn't matter I wouldn't think. I don't know how they do it, but 6 months sucks.

Tempted to upgrade my 2080 ti to a gigabyte 3080 ti so got it from NEWEGG however not certain my PSU would be adequate. PSU and everything (I imagine) that draws power are recorded underneath:
1 x Seasonic Focus Plus 750W 80 Plus Gold Modular Power Supply
1 x Intel Core i9-9900K 3.6GHz (Coffee Lake) Socket LGA1151 Processor
1 x Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Elite Intel Z390 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard

You should be good, 750W is what EVGA Power Meter recommends for the components you listed. There are quite a few power supply calculators available online.
So, it really depends on what you want to do with your PC. Do you want to make your PC more suitable for gaming or work? As an example, I use editing software from Movavi and it requires a lot of good components such as SSD, high-end processor and of course a lot of RAM. From my point of view, you need to change your HDD to SSD and add more RAM, so you'll have a very powerful machine.
Now would be the time to start looking at things as prices are falling.
Hello guys,
I ordered one MSI 3060 Ventus 2X OC about 380 euros, but then I found 6700XT is a lot better choice at the same price and I canceled the order to buy 6700XT. However I am kinda confused which brand to pick, I know it's -+ about the same perfomance but mostly wondering about Coil whine and Noise / Temps.
Could someone help me to pick the best gpu from these options: (all these are about the same price of 380-390euros) Does anyone tried any of these?
1. Sapphire Radeon RX 6700 XT 12GB GDDR6 Pulse
2. ASRock Radeon RX 6700 XT 12GB GDDR6 Challenger
3. MSI Radeon RX 6700 XT 12GB GDDR6 Mech 2X OC
4. PowerColor Radeon RX 6700 XT 12GB GDDR6 Fighter
5. Asrock RX 6700 XT Phantom Gaming D 12GB OC (405euros)
It will be combined with Intel Core i5-12600KF Processor, 32GB G.skill RAM 3200, 1440p 155 Monitor and it will replace MSI 1660 Super Gaming X.
Thanks in advance.
In my opinion, OC versions are better constructed for increased heat dissipation.
At the same time, you do not need to use OC at all.

I found 6700XT Powercolor Red Devil 12GB and Asus RTX 3060 Ti 8GB Dual V2 OC LHR both used in excelent condition with warranty 330€, so I am thinking to buy one of these two. Which one you think? I am close to 6700XT Red Devil as I hear is top tier.

A lot depends on what your usage preferences are. GForce drivers for linux are very limited as NVidia does not disclose the codes to build them. For this reason and more RAM, the 6700XT Powercolor Red Devil 12GB is the better choice of both cards, although it consumes 30W more power at peak. However, in video (movie) processing for Windows, the Titanium chipset may be more efficient.
Be careful when buying a card from a cryptocurrency miner. The warranty won't help if the cards were overheated. Their performance drops.

Well my usage is mostly for gaming and slightly other stuff.
Luckily the card is not from crypto miner, I will probably get the red devil 6700xt
I think it will age better than 3060 ti.

For AMDs , Sapphire & Powercolor are way to go.
Red Devil is a good choice.
But there is also a thing about warranties.
Sapphire has weird warranty rules where I live.
I wouldn't go for used TBH. I would instead get a cheap new card rather than a used one.
If you can wait 2 months, the 7xxx series should be around June-July.

I can take 6700XT new at 388€ but low tier models. Red Devil seems beast compared to these low tier cards.
The guy sent me a video and screenshots, the card is in excellent condition and he didn't used it a lot, mostly for editing videos etc. He will also give me all papers for warranty etc. + he could return me the money if I install it and I have problem.
The thing with 7xxx is would be kinda expensive when they come out at September and my budget will remain the same.
Now you make me wonder 6700XT or 7xxx I was already in dilemma about 6700xt or 3060 ti and about what model.

Red Devil is a good series and powercolor is top 2 AMD brands so they would perform good as long as it was not used to mine.

Oh man.
I went from 3060 to 6650 to 6700 XT to 3060 Ti then checked the models.
Apparently, there is a 3060 Ti with a GDDR6X which makes it equivalent to 3070.
Then the Hogwarts Legacy thing hit and 8GB ram is actually not enough anymore.
So back to 6700XT / 6750 XT.
Powercolor /Asus TUF : Out of stock
Gigabyte : Coil whine
Sapphire : Only pulse models. No nitros in stock
AsRock: Lot of complaints in my place.
Asus Dual/ MSI Ventus: Not good
And then nvidia announce RTX Remix yesterday.

I am just going to wait I guess.

Indeed about Powercolor I hear very good things, I must be honest as an Nvidia users for years I didn't knew that brand but with a bit search I learned it's top tier Brand along with Sapphire.
What's wrong with used if it's in an excellent condition and not extremely used? The same card new here cost 515€ and I get it 330€ with warranty. I guess the discount worth it. Then again I wondering, is it good to buy new cheap low tier model or it's better used with better price, top tier in good condition?

Hehe, well I am sure, here I am gonna pay more if I go for new 7000 series plus I am gonna wait for more months, they will release at September, I expect local shops here to have them around Oct. Even now 6750XT new not the best tier costs ~450€+.

Lmao I feel you.
I ordered 3060 new gpu but then I canceled the order since I saw 6700XT had similar perfomance with 3060 ti - 3700 plus 12GB VRAM and Hogwarts came to my mind.
Now I am about to buy used 6700XT Red Devil but 2 days ago I saw the new Nvidia VLC upscaling feature + RTX Remix you show me now.... I also found a guy in reddit saying Ray Traycing/DLSS doesn't worth in 3060 ti cards and also AMD's FSR 3.0 is around the corner and nvidia will lock DLSS 3 only to 4000 series.
I am gonna cry...I don't know what to choose.

Nothing wrong I guess. Unless it is used by miners. Who sometimes swap components on cards. That's the main issue I believe.
And yes the top cards are better usually.

6700 XT has better performance than 3060 Ti. It's near 3070 in everything except Raytracing.
IMO any sort of upscaling looks weird.
nvidia has better software features and support for AI.
AMD just makes good cards. They last a while.

Since you have used both, at this point at the same price, which one you suggest and worth more?
I mostly use it for games, yuzu emulator, watching movies/series locally (nvidia released vlc upscaling :S) and generally slightly other things.

That's the tough question.
AMD Pros:
The games on 6700 XT look better. It's a personal opinion tho. No FSR btw.
Also, IMO Xbox and PS5 ports will perform better since both have AMD chips. e.g Horizon games.
Better Linux support, cos Steam has AMD chip as well.
AMD Cons
You cannot run Hackintosh on 6700 XT.
You can do it on 6600 XT/6650 XT/ 6800 .
Goodluck trying to do any AI development.
Nvidia Pros
Raytracing performance is great. Cyberpunk looks dope on nvidia system.
If you do code and are interested in AI modeling, nVidia is the way to go because most libraries are targeted toward Nvidia. And 3060 12GB is a better choice than 3060 Ti/3070/3070 Ti due to more Ram.
Moonlight uses Gamestream but nvidia is shutting down. So I think they will be moving to sunshine which has support for AMD. But I dunno.
Nvidia's AI noise cancellation thing is really cool if you use Mic for calls/recording.
Nvidia Cons:
You cannot run Hackintosh on any nvidia card.
8 GB is not enough for the 1440p system.
A lot of Nvidia software is bound to newer cards.

Thanks a lot for the detailed post.
I know RT looks great on Nvidia but it comes with FPS loss + is 3060 cards really worth the RT? ofc some titles look and run great like Cyberpunk. What about the future? I don't believe 3060 will run that much great in new titles.
I don't do AI dev, so pretty much for everything else winner seems is AMD between these cards.
Anyways, I think I am over thinking it, 6700XT looks dope especially the beast Red Devil.
