First off i need to thank Xda user KevL for putting me on the first step in the right direction to getting here! Thanks!!!
For any one using and running i897 modem for the love of audience chip support on their device and also need band selection to lock 850 band, this thread is for you!!!
I first started using i9000 modem kernal combos just for the band selection ability.
After AdamHolden85 Allowed me to continue development on his KB1 Fusion rom i started a mission to unlock the "Rat". I gathered much information from users that suffered from "Rat". (weird that some users with i897 modems installed don't have this restriction, but most do)
Some may ask "What is "Rat"?"
dial *#2263# on your captivate while running a i897 modem and you get:

}
but what you are after is:
So lets get to it shall we!
This is really more of a security loop hole!!
1=Remove the simcard from your phone with out removing battery!
(use your nail to lift the edge of the card over the battery lip)
2=dial *#2263# and you will first get "RAT", wait for this pop up!
3=hit "OK" and dial *#2263#, and now you are in!!
4=select the bands you wish to use
5=Menu hard key to get popup here and select end!
6=place device into airplane mode!!
7=reinsert your sim with out removing battery!!
8=Turn off airplane mode and watch cell bars grow and data to connect in your status bar.
9=Dail in *#0011# and check for your self!!
May work on other band selection RAT modems, I only can confirm JH7,JH6,JI6,KB1,and KF1!

This does not effect data speeds because this has nothing to do with HSDPA/HSUPA/HSPA+. That is dependent on something written within the modem that XDA is yet to learn about. (no one seems to wanna touch the modems, in part because they are heavy with proprietary code for things like the bluetooth chip and the GPS chip. proprietary = closed source and a PITA to mod) Tho using GSM = 2G and WCDMA = 3G, so be careful about which 850 or 1900 band you are choosing.

And the same bugs with using a I9000 kernal aply, no buetooth, is that corect?
Click to collapse
This does not allow for mismatch with kernels, as that is HW communication dependent. Your kernel talking in a 1234 pattern and your modem talking in a 4321 has NOTHING to do with RAT or the band/frequency that your phone it trying to speak to the antenna with.

I have tried this a couple times and it doesn't seem to work for me. RAT is still restricted at the main menu.

This does not remove RAT, it gives us a means to work around it. At this point we still don't even know what triggers RAT as some I897 users have shown to not have such restrictions. Until we have figured that out we can't kill RAT, tho we do know it is something within the I897 aka AT&T modems.

Settings may get dropped on reboot, sry but for now this is only a change held in the RAM.
Other things to note:
Phone stays on and running the whole time. The most time consuming part of this is waiting for the phone to realize the removal/insertion of the sim card.
-SGS Tools / nitrality- apps have the "secret/service codes" to speeds up and or ease the process.
No love for WCDMA 900... even on fully auto that lone band is unused.
Folks, follow the instructions exact, and take your time. I tried toying around and skipping = not successful.
Lastly you can't seem to force it to run an unsupported band (like I did with the WCDMA 900), it will eventually seek its way into service again. Keep in mind that having RAT means we have limited control over this aspect of the phone.
Also, LOL that I can force it to use GSM and only have edge data
Awesome !! And big thanks for this Johnsondr80 !! And a thanks to KevL also !!

Also the 850 Band travels better so you'll see stronger signal more often. Should also give better call quality, tho I'm not 100% on that part.

Yep, I897 modem is still hsdpa only. Yep, does not add any new kernel compatibility. Yep, does allow for band selection (tho still not a easily as those without RAT)
So, it is mainly useful for devs / testers, and ppl who have dumb phones that love using 1900 band during heavy traffic and/or low signal.

This does not remove RAT. As Johnsondr sneaks in there "This is really more of a security loop hole!!" In that you can enter the menu with the sim card out and lock in the phone to use your band of choice. When you put the sim back in it stays locked in.
Annoying yes, but at least we now have a means of changing the band when service is generally crappy.

I'm confused why do you think I posted in the wrong thread. I did your step to get audience chip support. Audience chip is suppose to offer better voice quality. Am I missing something?
did this a couple more times to make sure I went through the steps correctly and both times when going back to the menu to see what band it was on I watched it go from 850 back to 1900. This was without a reboot or any button pushes. I hope we can find something that will work consistantly.
This works, however, it does not stick on reboot.

Maybe you miss read. There is nothing here to give audience chip support to those who don't already have it. OP mentions this is for ppl who choose an I897 modem+kernel so that they can use the Audience chip.

Pricing isn't announced yet in most of the world.
For every other piece of infromation, why not just, eh, check the official website? I mean, have you even looked at Samsung's website? It lists all the specs for the device and few other details.
tl;dr: Price - dunno, not announced
"with Google" -experience - yes, if you mean GMail, Market and stuff.
Full Marketplace - Yes, it's a full phone and has all the capabilities as such, even market.
ps. Aside from the larger (and different) display, the Tab is essentially a Galaxy S.
Perfect thanks.

GSM calls and 3g video calls are extra features compared to ipad which will need a seperate micro sim and 3g contract and pay extra
when at home i use wifi for the tab and while on long journeys , put my existing contract sim and use it and will not miss calls too , the display is just awesome and so smooth........

I'm not really clued up on all this but wouldn't this be tied in with the hardware? And since the Tab has been announced in the states not having voice(and possibly sms) capabilities wouldn't that mean it was missing the hardware to do it?

your right voodoo will not work with reorient. i didnt want to use the kernal that came with it because i didnt want it to cause any problems with buttons and recovery and all that. so with the reorient kernal everything works, can still get into recovery and download with regular button combo, but voodoo does not work yet until excaliberinhand puts it in his kernal

dont know since i dont use bluetooth at all. check the reorient kernal thread since that what you would be using. but i think this is the same kernal being used in dg's cog 8.1 and i think it said on his download page that this kernal does have some kind of problems with wired bluetooth controls.

Bro sometimes u seem like a big advocate of restrictions.
There is always a fix especially in the developing world of Android, it's just nobody has bothered because many areas don't have LTE or because whoever is using a fix, didn't make it public. Period.
Who gives a **** what the phone is "supposed to have" what it does have is a band-4 LTE chip. PERIOD.
Hardware is hardware.
"Oh hey I have a lambo with 500hp which is governor at 120kmh max speed, because you're not supposed to drive over the speed limit." - I'm sorry but in this case people would remove the governor and drive faster.

You're right, except that the problems are in closed source modules, if you want to try your hand at hex editing them and fixing the problems, go ahead, otherwise you should use the phone as it was designed or live with the problems that come with using it in a way it wasn't designed.

The question is: regardless of what you read on your display, does this trick actually work?
Has someone who usually travels around the world, tested yet?
The main difference between D5803 and D5833 is about LTE bands and it's a hardware difference, which means that even if you cross-flash the basebands you can't get it work just because of the lack of the proper radio module

That's not entirely accurate. Many modern Qualcomm devices use the same or similar radio modules. The available LTE bands depends on region, country, certification, and blah blah blah. If you read the guides or search the forum you will find many people have enabled alternate LTE bands by modifying the NV part of the radio. Some bands may or may not work depending on if your network supports them and if the internal antennas can support them. For some reason Sony does pretty well with its antennas because a lot of our devices have 6-9 bands of LTE available where some manufacturers skimp out and only allow 3-4.

Quite interesting. I will take a look for sure then :cyclops:
great! I will take a look and see if my D5833 can add the additional band since the 5833 doesn't support T-mobile LTE. I tested it last week in Dallas, Texas with my Hong Kong D5833 as my previous Z1 did show LTE with the same T-mobile plan I am on.
Hi ,
I got a Z3 C D5833 and I need to unlock the LTE_BC4 band can anyone confirm if it's possible and works??
it would be awesome if someone can confirm this mod is working on this great device, we need a specific z3compact tutorial :'(
Hi guys!
I have the D5833 model and I'm trying to enable the band IV 1700 mhz for UTMS (I think is name as BC4). I followed that tutorial (the first one, not the specifical for Z27Z3) and it appears enabled on the service mode but it doesn't seems to work. Maybe it's just not hardware supported?
I would need to turn D5833 which support this: HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 --> To this: HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 (which is the D5803 model). If anyone could just give me any hint on this it would be great. Thanks in advance!

Alternatively, there's this blog post which describes the same procedure. The screenshots are helpful to look at before doing the whole thing by yourself. [Xperia Z2 D6503]プラスエリア化してみた。(LTE、3G) | THE BOOLEE STREET

For newer sony xperia device, insurance against this specific mod is to flash the baseband from a matching ftf firmware...

Exactly. That's what I did and how I recovered from the problem.

Great Mikuru :good:. Would you care to describe the method for the Z3C ?

Well, making a Nandroid backup before embarking on any of these projects can never be emphasized enough!

Start a new thread or edit your first post, I guess it would be up to you. I would suggest you to explain how to unlock other bands (not only Japanese ones) if possible so it may be useful to a wider audience.
Anyhow, your effort would be greatly appreciated :fingers-crossed:
Just a quick question - not meaning to thread-jack
So, this really intrigues me as I'm wondering if this would make it so that our phones could work with Google Fi's new service?
Would it be possible, were the bands to be unlocked, for our phones to use Google's specially developed SIM?
this will work on xperia m2 d2306?
I doubt the Z3C can use Fi because it would need to support CDMA for voice calls on Sprint.
Also, I wonder if we are really unlocking the LTE bands. The Qualcomm Transceiver and Baseband may be able to support all the LTE bands but the amplifiers may not. Until we find out what amplifiers the Z3C is using, we're probably just spinning our wheels in the mud. I can't find any teardowns of the Z3C that look under the shielding, but a teardown of a Chinese Z3 shows that the amplifiers are all Skyworks ICs.
Is it possible to unlock and use LTE band 12 for the D5803 variant? I'm thinking about buying a Z3 compact to use on T-Mobile, and they're deploying a lot of band 12.
I upgraded to Pie via ota, but my 4G does not work after upgrading, only 2g and 3g. Any solution for this?

Have you updated via the VPN method?

Yes
Try to select from list 2G and see if the modem works. then try one of the options offered. So I managed to get 4G
I think the problem is with the modem they used in Android Pie: it supports only B1 (2100), B3 (1800+), B5 (850), B40 (TDD 2300) and B41 (TDD 2500).
So 4G is working but only in countries where this bands are used. In Italy for example we have band 3 in highways and cities, but in rural areas we use band 20 and it's gone
I hope that they can solve the problem with a new update.
PS: Don't try to flash 8.1 modem over Android Pie stock rom. It will cause system crashes and SIM card won't work anymore until a reflash of Pie modem.

It also happen with B7, at least for me. In Italy I use Iliad and.. there's no 4g available for me. 3g works but, if it's like how you said, we need to wait for the next update.

I have to say I'm amazed that Xiaomi can release a rom with missing bands. It seems so incompetent. Considering Europe in particular uses these bands and this is the market they are trying to break into it would seem another massive own goal (after the phone for £1 UK farce)!
Can you guys try to use a launcher like Nova that allows to go to activities, search for Settings.BandMode and select Automatic, and see if it helps?

Consider as well that people who have this issue have been "forcing" the update when they were not supposed to get it... You can't blame Xiaomi for that.
If some people got the OTA "normally" and have this issue, then I can understand the complains, but so far it's only people with 0 patience and disregarding the advice of others who warned about risks for LTE while forcing the OTA (and in case it's not clear for some, LTE==4G).

This is simply wrong on a technical level. There is only one version of the update. I also factory reset and the bands are still missing. It's been established that xiaomi have omitted many of the bands. If you go on the firmware thread that joey huab updates he clearly explains that the bands are missing on the pie firmware. It has nothing to do with using a vpn to get the update early!

You have to wait for xiaomi firmware update. The bands are missing.
My wife got the update ota on the mi a1 and also no 4g anymore. No vpn push or anything.
