a friend was using a galaxy S 4g when he switched to a rooted MT4G .. he had a visual voicemail icon on the galaxy so when he switched he wouldnt get the VM notification on the MT4g.. so far he downloaded the simple visual Vm from the market.. its kinda crappy.. is there a way for him to DL the visual VM app he was used to on the galaxy for the MT4G?
he is on the virtu unity 1.29 ROM
Galaxy S 4G, assuming he's on T-mobile. there used to be a visual voicemail app from T-mobile on the market, but I just looked and couldnt find it anywhere. Ive used YouMail Voicemail Plus and it works great, give it a shot
I know that on the stock rom, you just click the phone button and scroll to the voicemail button.

yeah that works, or press the 1, but the problem is that since he subscribes to visual Vm the notifications doesnt show up if he doesnt have the visual app.

After installing 2.1 i realized it doesnt include visual voicemail. i found some voicemail apps on market.. what do you guys recommend?
Also the absence of camera, multi touch, and light sensor; Is there any fixes available for any of these?
I kinda have to stick with 2.1 for usb tethering, but miss the original functionality.

I am on the same boat as you are. As for Voicemail, I've heard good things about Youmail. The rest (camera, multitouch) is not done yet.

For someone who can't access Voice yet (not in continental US), what then is the best Voicemail alternative? Is Youmail better than stock Sprint Visual Voicemail?
I just renewed my plan and picked up a MyTouch 4G. So far, I have to say it puts my Nexus One to shame. However, the built in Sense UI is missing some features that I miss about the CM6 or Gingerbread roms which were previously on my Nexus One.
i.e.:
- ability to switch to vibrate mode from the lockscreen
- ability to use Launcher Pro
However, there is one feature about the stock MyTouch 4G UI that I absolutely cannot live without. And that's the built in visual voicemail. I hated having to use Google Voice on my Nexus One to get this feature.
My question:
Is there a way to root the MT4G and run a custom rom such as CM6/7 and still keep the built in visual voicemail feature found in the stock UI?
Thanks in advance!
Use ADW on it, and get rid of the Visual VM. It's ancient.
Give YouMail a try. It's a hell of a lot better than the built in VVM.
On The Nexus One ADW launcher was much more laggy than Launcher Pro. And it lacked a lot of the features as well.
Is this not the case on the MyTouch?

Nope. I use ADW EX on my MT4G and it fast. Used the free ADW before that and it was fast as well.
Wow, Youmail is absolutely terrible. It's worse than Google Voice and doesn't even hold a candle to the built in visual VM app. When attempting to listen to a voicemail in Google Voice, it would time out 75% of the time without letting me listen to it.
Youmail is even worse. It forwards my missed calls to my Youmail account where callers are constantly greeted by a busy signal and cant even get to my voicemail box to leave a message.
What a horrid service...
I have Launcher Pro on my rooted stock ROM phone. Why can't you use Launcher Pro? Also, LP was faster in my experience than ADW, but YMMV.

If you take the time to set YouMail up properly and install the YouMail app on your phone it is the best VVM service available. JMHO [I have used them all]
What is Visual Voicemail and how do I get activate it on my phone?
I've tried activating it before but noticed no change.
i have heard in the past about people making calls on the gsm versions? but what about the cdma versions? at the moment, i am trying to figure out if it is possible.
at the moment, i got the phone dialer to show in the app drawer using cm9 rc1 and editing the framework. it closes after you try to dial though. any help?

Well, with Google Voice, Chat, and GrooVe IP (Lite), I can make and receive calls via wi-fi. Probably not exactly the same thing you're looking for, though.
Have to agree with Harold on this. My vzw tab came with data plan, not voice and when a text on the plan goes through (like never now) I was billed for it. So I be thinking vzw would catch on to using talk minutes, but using voip on wifi I get clear calls that work so well I canceled my phone plan.

Ok I also have figured out the framework-res.apk edit on CM10. I have it activated on page plus and also have the dialer closing after number is dialed. If it's any help it looks like the com.android.phone is whats FC'ing. Or is it ever running? Reason I say this is because if you *#*#info#*#* which is the only menu I can get into on the CM10 build, is that if you try to change radio in there (clicking the menu for it even) will FC the com.android.phone. Any help or Update's please let me know, as I'm still currently looking for a solution to this.
Has this been solved two months later by any chance?
It's frustrating because I am most definitely on a plan with voice included (share everything) and the tab even has a phone number assigned to it, but no contacts or dialer app. I would really like sms too so I can get redbox codes.
The tab clearly makes a voice phone call for activation also, this has to just be a software block.
I found a mention that you need to use the modem.bin from a Verizon Fascinate to undo the voice block (same hardware).
But I do not know where to find such a creature.
I have stopped looking for answers and sold my tab. So personally I have not gotten it to work yet. Hope you have better luck than me.

I bought my V20 directly - not thru veizon and it is activated on the Verizon network. When I try to install Verizon Visual Voicemail, it says my device is not compatible. I tried downloading the apk and it "installs" but when I try to open it I get "This app is not supported on this device." Has anyone found a way to make this work? I have to assume that if I'd bought this from Verizon, it would work.
Stock, mine worked fine. Rooted and running a 996 ROM though, I'm in the same boat. I haven't tried REAL hard yet, but if you come across a work-around, let me know.
I'm working on it now, trying to find a fix for this one..
I had the same issue, using my unlocked v20 (us996) on Verizon. Went to the store and the tech guy says that the visual voicemail service will be soon discontinued and something else will be released and to wait for it, but as of now there is no way to get the voicemail app on phones that aren't Verizon.
Hmm, ok so I got the visual voicemail app that came on WETA rom, but it doesn't do voice to text like I was expecting... Buttttttt, that's because Verizon charges for it and I'm not paying $2.99 for something that Google Voice does for free lol..
Well of course there's always "something", right..?!?
Google Voice says it doesn't work with my provider...! Whelp, back on the hunt for a VVM app I can use, that's hopefully free..

In our case, I actually do have a Verizon phone, just using a ROM for a different model. Was hoping to find a build.prop edit, or something that would let me re-label the phone back correctly so Verizon would see it. I know that they said that 7.1+ would build the VM into the native system, instead of an app - maybe that's what they were talking about? My other issue is that I use Google Voice with a 2nd number for a business line, so I can't exactly use it for my main number's VM.

I did, with my 2nd number, and it's been fine since. I rarely use it for calls, but I use it for incoming, and for it's VM. So far, it seems to work fine. Call comes in correctly, goes to VM (which reminds me I have to change my message lol).
Ok so i had google voice for a few hours and it was cool.. But I figured I'd try to stick with a more oem approach, so I found the Pixel XL dialer.. Now I'm tweaking that to work for me, love the visuals on it that's for sure..!
Does anyone have VVM actually working in the stock dialer on the TMO variant?
First, the tab itself in the dialer won't even show if you have the TMO VVM app. So I uninstalled the app, got the tab to show, but all I get is a blank white box with a VM icon with a red exclamation point on it. Anyone else? Yeah, I could use the VVM app but...eff that. I want it in the dialer. ?
Oh, and if you go into the dialer settings > call settings > voicemail, it says "visual voicemail is not activated yet" but, uh, bruh, it totally is because the VVM app works (when installed).
I have the unlocked 6T and it's the same for me. I tried stock dialer and Google phone dialer, neither will activate VVM but the T-Mo VVM app works. It's not just the T-Mo 6T with this issue

Lame. Maybe with root/ROMs we can cook in the Google dialer or something and get it to work as intended. Thanks for confirming it's not just me.
Ok guys I had this issue as well. I got mine working by using the latest Google dialer beta apk and doing the following:
1. If you have TMO Vvm or Google dialer(or both) apps installed, uninstall them.
2. Go to stock dialer app info and clear cache and data.
3. Go into the stock dialer settings and activate vvm. Reboot.
4. Install Google dialer and Grant all permissions.
5. Go into settings/apps/default apps and make Google dialer default.
6. GDialer settings voicemail make sure everything is on.
That was all I did... TMO 6t

Bruh... That seemed to work. I got the same screen now that you posted. Just have to wait until I get a VM to know for sure
Edit: spoke too soon. I went back into phone and I'm getting the "you might not see voicemail until it's fully activated" blah blah blah error.

Yeah...I wish. Lemme ask you though... Do you pay for VM to text from TMO for like 4 bucks a month? I do, and I'm wondering if that might be interfering with Google's transcription service...

Ok. I just turned it off on my plan. I'm gonna redo the whole process because I think you have to go into the TMO VVM app to provision it so it gives you the options you selected. I'll report back in a bit.

Yeah that didn't work either. Might be because I've paid for the feature thru today or something, I'll try it again tomorrow. The fact that it works for you tells me that I can get it too.

I have seen some similar issue in this thread but can't remember where exactly, but maybe check through it and or try the latest one patched in the OP. It also mentions for vvm in the dialer, you need to make it default app dialer.or maybe disable stock, I cant remember off the top of my head..just search through the thread .
