2.1 eclair voicemail? - Hero CDMA General

After installing 2.1 i realized it doesnt include visual voicemail. i found some voicemail apps on market.. what do you guys recommend?
Also the absence of camera, multi touch, and light sensor; Is there any fixes available for any of these?
I kinda have to stick with 2.1 for usb tethering, but miss the original functionality.

I am on the same boat as you are. As for Voicemail, I've heard good things about Youmail. The rest (camera, multitouch) is not done yet.

Google Voice.

For someone who can't access Voice yet (not in continental US), what then is the best Voicemail alternative? Is Youmail better than stock Sprint Visual Voicemail?

Voice Dialing/Blue Tooth

So on my old BlackBerry, I was able to push the call button on my BlueTooth headset and it would automnatically open Voice Dialing.
Is there a setting to turn this on or am I doing something wrong?
Now I know the Hero Voice Dialing blows in comparision to the Moment or other devices , but something is better than nothing.
Are there any better apps out there any one uses?

The Hero and the Moment would (or should) be using the same one, the Google one.

I like TopVoiceControl. It uses the same engine the Google Voice Dialer uses, but it actually works, unlike the Google one. It's obvious that what doesn't work correctly on the Hero is the front-end to voice, not the back end that does the actual voice recognition.

Moment uses one made by Nuance, I tried installing on the Hero with no luck. That app may have been the only thing I liked about my wife's Moment...not a strong enough reason to keep it.
Ill take a look at TopVoice and see if I like it. Thanks for the suggestion.
I installed froyo 2.2 and it offers what you're describing.

Is the Epic missing a voice recorder??

I just got my Epic a few hours ago, and my girlfriend noticed that there seems to be no stock Voice Recorder application. Unfortunately thats something that very important because she records her nursing lectures.
Am I missing it, or is there not one there. Also, if it is missing one, is there one in the market that works well, and that will work on the Epic?

Why did you think the Epic came with a stock voice recorder? There are plenty of free voice recorders on the market. Did you really need to post this instead of just searching the market for "voice recorder"?

I thought the Epic came with a voice recorder because the Evo I owned before came with one. I wasn't sure if it was called something else, or hidden in another app that I was unaware of. Also, I tried one in the Market called voice recorder and was having a few issues getting it to work on my Epic. All is fixed now, No need to get hostile.
Like he said, in the market there are dozens of them. No need to make a thread about it...
yikes, found this old thread while searching the same thing. /system/app shows an app called "sound recorder", but it wont launch.
Why does my hero have a native voice recorder and the epic doesnt? I understand how op is feeling. Looks like i still need to do some research on the epic.
I dont like downloading apps for basic functions, like caller id, calculator, vr, etc etc.
Atleast we no longer need to download an app to get mms working.

I'm in the same boat. All Android have a stock built in RECORDER because you can send voice messages to people. Unfortunately, I think since 2.1 or so, they stopped giving you access to it as if it were an app. Also unfortunately, most the apps in the market suck at doing such a simple thing. I use a recorder about 5x daily, and since I lost the native app, I've been dissappointed.

Rooting to CM7. Will I lose built in Visual Voicemail?

I just renewed my plan and picked up a MyTouch 4G. So far, I have to say it puts my Nexus One to shame. However, the built in Sense UI is missing some features that I miss about the CM6 or Gingerbread roms which were previously on my Nexus One.
i.e.:
- ability to switch to vibrate mode from the lockscreen
- ability to use Launcher Pro
However, there is one feature about the stock MyTouch 4G UI that I absolutely cannot live without. And that's the built in visual voicemail. I hated having to use Google Voice on my Nexus One to get this feature.
My question:
Is there a way to root the MT4G and run a custom rom such as CM6/7 and still keep the built in visual voicemail feature found in the stock UI?
Thanks in advance!
Use ADW on it, and get rid of the Visual VM. It's ancient.
Give YouMail a try. It's a hell of a lot better than the built in VVM.
On The Nexus One ADW launcher was much more laggy than Launcher Pro. And it lacked a lot of the features as well.
Is this not the case on the MyTouch?

Nope. I use ADW EX on my MT4G and it fast. Used the free ADW before that and it was fast as well.
Wow, Youmail is absolutely terrible. It's worse than Google Voice and doesn't even hold a candle to the built in visual VM app. When attempting to listen to a voicemail in Google Voice, it would time out 75% of the time without letting me listen to it.
Youmail is even worse. It forwards my missed calls to my Youmail account where callers are constantly greeted by a busy signal and cant even get to my voicemail box to leave a message.
What a horrid service...
I have Launcher Pro on my rooted stock ROM phone. Why can't you use Launcher Pro? Also, LP was faster in my experience than ADW, but YMMV.

If you take the time to set YouMail up properly and install the YouMail app on your phone it is the best VVM service available. JMHO [I have used them all]
What is Visual Voicemail and how do I get activate it on my phone?
I've tried activating it before but noticed no change.

Google Voice

Has anybody else noticed that with each new update, texting works less and has more fing bugs than you can shake a stick at? Some days...it really drives me nuts, and I think its sprint's crappy 3G, but the issues are the same when on wifi or 4g, too.
Which version was the best (I think one before the current version); does anyone have that .apk?
Sent from my Carbon Fibered EVO.
Hmmm, no, haven't had any issues to be honest. Don't know if it's location based or what, but just to offer another data point I'm in downtown Chicago and rarely stray out to the 'burbs. Could possibly be different somewhere else.
No issues with Google Voice here whatsoever, except for the occasional (<1%) time when a call doesn't get routed to me, or the (<5%) chance that the person listens to about four extra rings before my cellphone starts ringing.
I have even fewer troubles than drmacinyasha and I'm in a small town in Iowa.
You are so lucky.
My texts get hung up, wont send, freeze the whole app, then the other person gets it 5 times, ect. Doesn't matter 3g, 4g, or wifi. Its all I use for texting because I'd rather type on my computer, but when I actually have to text from my phone...its a different story.
what rom are you using? how do you know there isn't another app causing the problem?

Myn's RLS 5. I've uninstalled the app and other apps several times - happened on other roms too, like Fresh's.
mine lag as well. Same ROM. maybe its time for a switch
Are you using the anonymous voice feedback? (whichever thing it asked about opting in to when you search for the very first time) I noticed when I said "no" on stock Sense it worked poorly, then better on Warm 2.2 RLS5 and CyanogenMod7 when I said "yes."
What you are describing used to happen to me but it doesn't anymore. The latest version actually fixed multiple and send failures. Other than I've seen once or twice of deleting something then it comes back later, is the only thing I've seen that isn't working right. What's funny is that occasionally, like right now, I use the evo and not the evo shift. I notice lag in the old evo that isn't as bad or isn't there at all in the shift. On both phones I'm running stock rooted.
The only thing I've noticed is that one time I didn't get a text from my girlfriend. Phone calls work great. Texting works great. Maybe I'm the lucky one.
I had the same texting problems with the any rom with the stock messaging.

I just tell people to get with the program and send pictures through email. And if their phone doesn't have email, get with the program and get a better phone.

Only on the web app. They need to add that. There hasn't been a update to the app in while.

They need to update a lot of their apps. Google Voice needs multiple recipient texting. Google Reader needs a "mark as read" feature implemented. Google Reader needs bookmarks. And the list goes on. Instead... they put out Androidify. Don't get me wrong, I made one. But still, there are more important things they could be doing.

Does MikRoms support Voice Commands?

In reference to the custom ROM (MikRoms - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038967) is it compatible with Google Voice Commands. I understand that these require Froyo, but the ROM has some 3.0 features in it. Can someone confirm if Voice Commands work with that ROM? I don't have enough posts to ask in that thread
I couldn't use it with text. Didn't even attempt to record what I said.

Thanks. I'm assuming it just did a Google search then? It's an amazing feature added in Froyo I really don't want to install a ROM that doesn't support it but we'll see what happens

Very awesome. I'm going to install 1.03 later. Hope it's good as it sounds! I miss Sense (using cm7 now)
Hell yeah. I liked CM7, but the plain look, and the loss of the Sense widgets, just not the same, even using the LPP widgets, and some of the themes..
Trust me, you will love the 2.1/3.0 Roms
Running MikG 1.03
Voice commands confirmed!
Still got a lot of playing around to do. I will say that CM7 was better for customization but it feels great to have HTC's dialer, camera, widgets, etc back.
I'm running MikG 1.02 and I'm having the same problem, When i look at the task manager it keeps restating. My solution, and this is the crazy part.. I uninstalled my paypal app, and my google voice works perfect... Yes crazy.. My Solution to you is to look at the running task and see if it's restarting, then try and find the app that causing the problem or conflict... Maybe someone else could give some info on this....
Got voice on 1.03 - see only one other person had luck with it.
I'm on 1.03 updated from 1.02, the voice commands work most of the time through google search, but sometimes it fails to read for me as well. Most often it won't work when in the Navigation app doing a voice search.
