sprint phasing out the EVO 4g! - EVO 4G General

read this: http://www.androidcentral.com/sprint-saying-sayonara-several-android-smartphones
my stomach dropped when i read it, ss i have just bought my evo in june.

Sounds about right to me. It's been just over a year. That is about the current life cycle of most smart phones.
No worries though, the DEV will continue for quite a while still.

I'm quite content on my Evo...there will always be community based DEV for the evo long after its phased out...Some of us cant afford to get new phones each contract period...I plan to keep mine as long as I can.

There are still people developing for the Hero, I'm not even a little bit worried about my Evo

Maybe HTC will give us an unlock in October as a farewell gift. I personally don't need it, but it would be a nice gift for those who got it pre-installed.

I, too, just bought mine in June. But I'm not even remotely worried. Even on stock, I'm loving this phone. I could definitely use the better battery life once root hits the 2.3, though.

Yah that's only because there'll be an iPhone in September.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk

I'm not really surprised they are phasing the phone out, it was only a matter of time before faster phones hit the market. That however does not mean the all dev work will stop on it over night. This phone is still the OG & I'm proud to rock it!

I have high hope for sprint I will be expecting them to improve there 3g and 4g coverage and the new phones.

I am going to stick with the evo until sprint makes the jump from wimax to lte. Hopefully they wont be able to support both networks and give us some sort of incentive to switch. Wishful thinking probably- with the amount of wimax phones they currently have in the wild.

I had iPhone before, getting an android. What I'm looking for a phone is long lasting battery life and more choices of games and bigger screen like my evo.

Logical progression would dictate A5 dual core ARM9 cpu clocked at 1Ghz, GPU most likely SGX543 or 544, 1gb DDR2. It's not hard to see where it fits in the hardware specs. The only advantage I see Apple would have is OS and app optimizations out of the box as they control the hardware design.

The A5 doesn't get stomped by any of those phones. Its likely that the GPU will be superior.

Hopefully 2.3 or 2.4 with Sense coming soon;

On engaged it shows what HTC has announced and they either have 2.2 2.3 or 2.4 all with sense, and their "Facebook" phones have the new sense with 2.3.3 and it definitely looks like the Evo could run it as the Facebook phone and wildfire s only have 600mhz, granted its the new process and such, but we should be about on par.
The new phones are a disappointment to me, with last year specs pretty much. Just the new 1ghz processors and 768mb RAM. Here's to hoping CTIA has something...

I just hope we get a 2.3 or 2.4 update for our Evo since nothing good was really announced HTC wise.

I don't see why everyone is so down. First, new devices do not have to be announced at conferences. They can put together their own event any time they want. Second, there's a high probability that the Evo's successor will in fact be announced at CTIA. That's when the Evo was announced. And finally, it's not necessarily a bad thing that the new device isn't announced yet. It might mean we get a dual core processor or something else really cool that just isn't ready yet. The Incredible S has a second generation, single core, 1GHz Snapdragon. It's certainly better than what's in the Evo, but I'd gladly wait until the summer if it means I get dual core, and maybe even Ice Cream out of the box.

Darn, I was kind of hoping to hang on to my evo for more then just a couple years. It would be nice to see more long term support with these new devices, but at the speed that technology advances, it doesnt really suprise me.
I've got my fingers crossed for CTIA, really putting my faith in Sprint for that one.
As for 2.3...we already have roms for it and androidball ported a honeycomb rom to his Evo a few days ago (it's around here somewhere).
So, I think we'll be getting our upgrades. Not sure about non XDA, non rooted peoples...but we sure as hell will
I just hope Sprint announces something big at CTIA next month. Fingers crossed for EVO2 announcement, or at least a high end Galaxy-S-2 w/out keyboard, thank you.
And I would like one of these phones come this June, or I might jump ship to the iPhone5, with 4" screen, dual core, new AMOLED + Retina screen, and totally revised iOS5 adding Widgets and Notifications finally.

hahahahahhahahahahahahhahahahahahahahaha.
if you say so...
I've never seen people that get so bored of devices so damned quickly.
They really market technology well don't they?
"OMGZ EYE HAS 2 HAV DAT NU DEVIS TUDAY"
People really need to calm down about the whole Sprint and new phone thing.
It's going to happen.
-The fact that the lack of an "Evo 2" this summer would just be about the most retarded mistake Sprint could make.
-The practically confirmed, although still a "rumor", dual-core WM7 phone.
-The fact that there "is NO CDMA exclusivity" when it comes to the iphone. [Could sprint be waiting for the 4g capable iphone 5 this summer? I would if I were them, At&t and Verizon already has any person who wants the iPhone 4.]
-The likelihood of Sprint getting a WebOS device, or two
-The Blackberry Playbook
-Any Blackberry phones that will come out, that haven't even been talked about yet
And that's just NON-Android based devices!
You're silly if you think that Sprint won't be getting a plethora of Android devices over the next 6 - 12 months.
Android is the hot ticket.
Thus, Sprint, a company that is finally starting to gain customers and wants to continue to pull itself out of the hole its been in, HAS to be apart of that hot ticket.
There's just no way, no how that, coupled with everything I talked about up there, Sprint won't be getting multiple Android devices.
Relax.
Let's also keep in mind that, as sweet as the Atrix and other devices announced at CES are....NONE ARE EVEN OUT YET.
So, take a deep breath, and relax.

Sooo... What's next after the Epic?

I've seen a lot of talk about new phones but is there a successor to the Samsung Epic?
I talked my wife into buying the Epic as well and we love them but we always keep our eyes on that 2 year mark (which is coming up this Summer)... wondering if we are going to stay in place with the Epics or save for something else.
We are particularly fond of the physical keyboard... don't want to jump to a phone without one.
Love reading all the great threads on here... keep up the great info.
s
The EVO 3D seems to have caught the Epic community's eye. The Epic can do nearly everything that the new EVO can, except the Evo has a better CPU (dual core), TV out (hdmi), and it's 3D option.
No top tier phones with keyboards have been announced yet by Sprint. Samsung has created the "Galaxy S II" which could be used to produce an Epic 2 but that is between Samsung & Sprint to decide.
I believe Sprint is releasing a windows phone 7 HTC device with keyboard, but I'm not interested in wp7.
How are you hitting the 2-year mark when the Epic was released last summer?

Wait...this is Samsung, God forbid they put out an up to date phone.
I know it hasn't been released yet. But I/O is here in what 4 days?
I theorize 3.1 because it will be a merge of the Tablet and Phone branches of Android, and I doubt they would down grade the version number of the tablets. so the number would have to be >=3.1
Yeah the 4.3" screen may be a problem for those looking for an Epic 2. I think it would be absolutely huge. I personally am going for a non-kb device next. After all, the KB on the epic was pretty useless with all the skipped characters which forced me to become comfortable with swype.
I'd be all over the Evo 3D if it had an amoled display. Any phone w/o amoled will need to have very strong contrast levels with very low black's otherwise it will annoy the heck out of my to pay for a phone upgrade with a lesser quality screen.
I figure I'll be on the Epic until November 2012 since they removed the 1 year upgrade from my plan. At that point I may just keep it and flash over to Boost mobile for the uber cheap monthly rates.
I bought my Epic outright... used... I jumped into Sprint service with a blackberry curve... bought an EVO and Epic cash/used... but in excellent shape.
I've got another year before I start to look, everything else will be "obsolete"

I was looking at the evo3d but i am going to wait till the phone is launched first only because i think the phone is going to be locked down alot and i think root will take some time. I will probably be looking at the gsII. I want my amoled screen and 4.3 is an awesome screen size for me. Plus sammy has done pretty good about not locking phones down so far.
I've got till early Fall of next year before I start looking at amazing phones again (just think what they'll have then...lol)
BUT, if I were looking for a new phone, the EVO 3D is definitely the way to go.

I'm going to be in heaven if we get Gingerbread or even 2.4 Ice Cream on another version of the Epic 4G with a keyboard and that dual-core 1.2mhz processor, S-AMOLED + display...AND I'm hoping sprint will keep the keyboard on their version...cuase idk where id be for all the long ass E-mails and text messages without some physical buttons to press....and ohh my what the developers would do once they get their hands on that 1.2 dual core...maybe wishfull thinking but can anybody else say 2.0Ghz Overclock....I've already seen the EVO SHIFT 4G OC'D to 1.8 (which I'm thinking about jumping ship towards to be honest if we don't get something new)...I think that would be a realistic expectation.

The Evo 3D sounds cool, and the 3D option is interesting. If anyone has see the Ninteno 3DS, I assume it is similar to the technology the evo will have. The 3DS is cool but if that's what the evo screen looks like in 3D, HTC has some work to do.

Should i upgrade to evo 3d or wait tll 2012 for something better.
Ok so my upgrade isnt availible until 2012, but i was thinking about getting the evo 3d, but then again, next year theres probably gonna be a device with tegra 3 quad core, qhd,1gb ram,4.5" screen, sense 3.5. so im stuck between evo 3d or evo 4(or some other name).
There will always be a new device. After tegra 3 it will be something else. I am waiting on my upgrade for a little bit.

It's really a question only you can answer. If the Evo 3D represents enough of an upgrade to you to warrant paying full price, and if you have the means to do so, you should do it. If not, you shouldn't.
Since we haven't seen the Evo 3D yet and don't yet know just how much better it really is than what we have, that makes the question premature as well. My hunch is it will be quite significantly better. I could certainly see myself choosing to pay full price to get either the Evo 3D or another dual core phone this year, but I'll want to see the reviews, see them firsthand, etc. But like I said, that's my feeling. Only you can answer what you should do.

I want to upgrade to the Evo 3d, but probably won't have the money so ill probably wait for the next big phone when my upgrade comes.
I would wait. Nvidia is showcasing the tegra quad core and is supposed to have devices launching with it either near end of this year or beginning of next. So yeah i would wait cuz i believe after quad core comes out for phones hardware advances will stall or plateau. Then it will be all about the software and not what phone has what hardware
Edit: just looked at the initial benchmarks and the tegra quad core blows away the competition easily and even some LAPTOPS. Its not even final and still being worked on this is gonna be a beast
No point in waiting unless it takes until the end of summer to see the 3D.
New technology always comes out.
If you're gonna wait on that merit you might as well never buy.
You can always sell the damned thing if you find something else you want.

Ill definitely be skipping this round, as of right now I have no real need for 3D seeing as I dont even have a 3D tv to output content too. Also with the Kal-El processor chip set to launch q4 there really wont be a long wait till you find it packed in the next round of phones.
I pre-ordered the 3D, I can honestly care less about the 3D portion as I'll never enable it. Being able to upgrade less than a year after I signed my contract is why I will go ahead and upgrade to the 3D.
Getting bored with the EVO 4G right now, always wanting something new, so the 3D will hold me over until their next good phone comes out and I'll upgrade again.
If waiting for an upgrade is an issue I suggest reading the 1st post of this thread. It has worked for a ton of people including me.

but honestly they are both great phones either way you wont be disappointed the choice for me was easy this time Evo has and amazing community also its not Samsuck its HTC and HTC=OMGEWQTHGDSHTRSYGDF
Galaxy S II

- Comes with 2.3
- No 3D (pro for me)
Both have manufactures crappy UI so not part of my opinion

I got that same email this morning but thought it was just another one of those emails that just said coming soon. So the 24th is official huh?

I thought sprint would have put alot more into this phone ...because of the Specs but they honestly didn't IMO. So im going to the E3D .... Even though i will miss this community like crazy these people are mad cool.
but 1.5GHz Dual-core, 2.3, official CM support.... and it's HTC can't deny build quality.
I don't see sprint releasing anything else so this has to be it.

I'm going for GSII. I don't trust htc unlocking the bootloader. Besides gsii has better specs anyways. I think with all the crap from htc more developers will get the GSII than most people think.

No. They share the workload, rather than a single core constantly being mated out.
HTC EVO 3D will have a lot more development for it (EVO 4G has like 20+ roms, whereas the Epic has about 8, in total).
I also tend to think HTC have better radios (signal wise).
I'll wait until the GS3 or whatever is out when my 2 year contact is up or my epic runs into something it can't run which I really want. If I had to pick between the two, I'd grab the GS2.

It's been rumored that they started doing this when the EVO 3D was announced.

Is the Evo the most popular Android smartphone ever?

Strangely enough I still see a ton of people use the Evo 4G more so than ever even after this phone has been around for over a year now and really not too many Photons, Evo 3D's, or Epic 4G Touches. What makes our phone one of the most ubitiquous?
It would be if it sold on more carriers i bet. It was a revolution when it came out so it sold alot and continued doing well afte a price drop. Sadly im guess it will fade out when peoples upgrades come around since the evo isnt even 2 years old yet.
When the evo came it was was THE powerhouse. Now, most of the phones that come out are just dual core 1.2GHz something. Take away the second core, and you have an Evo. The Evo can still most things as the newer phones, just 'technically' slower. So like some games/apps may not work because they were optimized for dual core performance. I mean you can tether, wifi, 3g/4g...everything else the newer phone are doing, with the NFC only on the nexus. That's why most people are holding out on the evo.
It's because of XDA that the EVO is still holding strong
I believe Evo has the strongest dev community of any phone, and certainly the most longevity. It deserves it - it's the 1st superphone.

That's a fact...go look at any other of the XDA forums for other phones...none have as much going on there as far as active members, devs and posts and threads still being made. We have at least 10 threads with over 1 million plus views and some with over 2 million, most others only have a couple with a few hundred thousand views. The Evo has one hell of a community, something I will for sure miss whenever I jump to another phone next year when my contract runs out.

Search Google for XDA and the evo forum is still on of the top returns BIG THANKS TO THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!!!!!! Developers and users and even the lurkers. Thank you and keep doing what you do! except the lurkers! you would be suprised that you might be able to help someone just be respectful and share you own experience with roms and apps etc
I still enjoy my evo and with the releases of ics I will be content for a while longer. Though there are stronger phones now, the evo 4g hold it own. The devs are amazing here.

I'm holding out for a while as well, still find plenty of use with my EVO.
Even when I upgrade, I don't know if I could sell it.
It holds a certain sentimental value now as my first smartphone and Android device
We'll all eventually move on but you NEVER forget your first....
Even with other "better" phones out I still think the evo is the best. And btw anyone else feel like if they kept the design the same and just suped up the specs of this phone (no gay ass 3d) and put in quad core 1gb of ram (the works) maybe slim it a little it would be the absolute best phone ever?

To me, I have compared my Rooted Evo to newer current phones and mines do the same thing. Still 8megpx camera, now with the newer twicks, panorama ect.
My 4G gives me steady 7 to 9mbps. I am running mix sense, and Gingerbread.
So. the way it is my phone is still good until August 2012 when my upgrade
Now also, with this app called " Jeannie" is just as good as the SIRI that the Iphone has. Now. we all know Iphone is not a match with a rooted EVO but that SIRI is cool. Jeannie is same if not better.
I have all apps that I need and still have over 160mp of free space of internal memory and over 4GB on the sd card. SO? what else I need?
IM sure, August 2012, the newer EVO then will be a Quad Core beast with camera of 10megapix and way much more...until then My EVO Rocks!!
