I've seen a lot of talk about new phones but is there a successor to the Samsung Epic?
I talked my wife into buying the Epic as well and we love them but we always keep our eyes on that 2 year mark (which is coming up this Summer)... wondering if we are going to stay in place with the Epics or save for something else.
We are particularly fond of the physical keyboard... don't want to jump to a phone without one.
Love reading all the great threads on here... keep up the great info.
s
The EVO 3D seems to have caught the Epic community's eye. The Epic can do nearly everything that the new EVO can, except the Evo has a better CPU (dual core), TV out (hdmi), and it's 3D option.
No top tier phones with keyboards have been announced yet by Sprint. Samsung has created the "Galaxy S II" which could be used to produce an Epic 2 but that is between Samsung & Sprint to decide.
I believe Sprint is releasing a windows phone 7 HTC device with keyboard, but I'm not interested in wp7.
How are you hitting the 2-year mark when the Epic was released last summer?

Wait...this is Samsung, God forbid they put out an up to date phone.
I know it hasn't been released yet. But I/O is here in what 4 days?
I theorize 3.1 because it will be a merge of the Tablet and Phone branches of Android, and I doubt they would down grade the version number of the tablets. so the number would have to be >=3.1
Yeah the 4.3" screen may be a problem for those looking for an Epic 2. I think it would be absolutely huge. I personally am going for a non-kb device next. After all, the KB on the epic was pretty useless with all the skipped characters which forced me to become comfortable with swype.
I'd be all over the Evo 3D if it had an amoled display. Any phone w/o amoled will need to have very strong contrast levels with very low black's otherwise it will annoy the heck out of my to pay for a phone upgrade with a lesser quality screen.
I figure I'll be on the Epic until November 2012 since they removed the 1 year upgrade from my plan. At that point I may just keep it and flash over to Boost mobile for the uber cheap monthly rates.
I bought my Epic outright... used... I jumped into Sprint service with a blackberry curve... bought an EVO and Epic cash/used... but in excellent shape.
I've got another year before I start to look, everything else will be "obsolete"

Gotta have the keyboard for me otherwise it isn't a smartphone to me. I have tried and tried swype but for those messages more than 2 or 3 words I can not stand it.
I'd rather have super thin with no keyboard than slightly fat and a mostly working keyboard
And I would like to have latest version of touch wiz

"this guy is so boring, I hope he stops droning on and on soon... oh, crap, he can hear me"
I was looking at the evo3d but i am going to wait till the phone is launched first only because i think the phone is going to be locked down alot and i think root will take some time. I will probably be looking at the gsII. I want my amoled screen and 4.3 is an awesome screen size for me. Plus sammy has done pretty good about not locking phones down so far.
I've got till early Fall of next year before I start looking at amazing phones again (just think what they'll have then...lol)
BUT, if I were looking for a new phone, the EVO 3D is definitely the way to go.
In the evo forums over at android forums an HTC insider says the evo 3d will ship with no bootloader lock, they wanna make it dev friendly

According to my local corp store, if i replace my phone 2 more times (already done 3 exchanges) then i will be able to switch to different device which if i have to exchange this epic 2 more times i am jumping ship to htc and if evo 3d is out then i am going to it.

Even I am waiting for the Galaxy 2. It's gonna rock!
I'm going to be in heaven if we get Gingerbread or even 2.4 Ice Cream on another version of the Epic 4G with a keyboard and that dual-core 1.2mhz processor, S-AMOLED + display...AND I'm hoping sprint will keep the keyboard on their version...cuase idk where id be for all the long ass E-mails and text messages without some physical buttons to press....and ohh my what the developers would do once they get their hands on that 1.2 dual core...maybe wishfull thinking but can anybody else say 2.0Ghz Overclock....I've already seen the EVO SHIFT 4G OC'D to 1.8 (which I'm thinking about jumping ship towards to be honest if we don't get something new)...I think that would be a realistic expectation.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
The Evo 3D sounds cool, and the 3D option is interesting. If anyone has see the Ninteno 3DS, I assume it is similar to the technology the evo will have. The 3DS is cool but if that's what the evo screen looks like in 3D, HTC has some work to do.

Which is a better phone all around? I was thinking about getting a Nexus.
*PLEASE VOTE AND GIVE YOUR OPINION *
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
just phone wise definitely nexus S.
however it doesnt have a sd card slot and the screen is abit smaller.
also consider the carrier and if you would prefer that over sprint.
I would wait till they announce the Nexus S on Sprint and make sure the specs are the same. I would assume they are with the exception of adding a CDMA radio with wimax.
Definitely Nexus S.
Evo is nearly 2 generations old. (and RAPIDLY showing its' age)

I just got mine a couple months ago and I don't real think its showing it age. I have had all the Verizon big ones like the X and the Inc and I know that they are also not the newest phones but there is always something that will be a bit better and faster. The biggest thing that I like is that Sprint is truly unlimited. Im almost up to 9 gigs with 4 days left in my cycle. I need unlimited because I had to get rid of my home internet due to lack of work in my business right now. The Nexus S is a nice phone but really..no sd card?...and I had the Fascinate with verizon and I had to depend on devs for gps fixes and usable roms but I know the S is a google phone so it shouldn't indure the lack of Samsung updates. Its all of what you like and which service does well for you in your area also.
Oh lord not another one of these threads :rolls eyes: lol
If nexus s doesn't have an sdcard slot(hopefully it does) how is it even a competitor with other smart phones out there. I'd pick my evo all day because of the huge ass screen and its an HTC. Evo 3D sounds like a winner(based on rumors).

+1 Screen and HTC
16GB of internal storage is a lot. If you need more that's fine, but 16 GB should satisfy a ton of people.
Edit: Things better on the Nexus S.
GPU: PowerVR SGX 540 can compete with the Tegra 2, EVO's Adreno 200 barely beats the original 2009 Droid's PowerVR 530.
Cameras: Samsung makes good mobile cameras, HTC includes terrible ones.
Display: SAMOLED > Lousy TFT
Internal Storage: EVO has a microSD slot but has very limited internal storage. Nexus S is capped at 16GB but has way more internal storage for Apps and 16GB is not bad at all.
NFC: I'm sure this will come in handy, will it this year? Maybe not but it's good to have one.
Gyroscope: Better gaming, especially FPS'.
Software: This is tough but you can knock a Google supported phone. Come Ice Cream time, you'll be watching Nexus S users playing with a fully working, HW accelerated OS.
It's just a really tough decision for me bc I'm thinking about getting the Nexus and giving the Evo to my girl. Don't get me wrong I love my Evo, I'm just ready for something new!

Like i said..there will always be a better phone than what you have but sometimes the network and carrier matter also..If I go 10 miles away from my house with T-Mobile I go to Edge....not on Sprint. In the end it really doesnt matter to me what people decide on..I have to use whats best for me and so does everyone else. If price matters though I'm sure you have seen if your a Bestbuy rewards zone member you can get the S for $99 on a 2 year agreement with the coupon...not a bad deal.

If I can manage to keep myself from going to get that Nexus then I may just wait for the new EVO or Nexus 4G.

I read through some of the guides and its a lot of stuff that im not too sure I know how to do. It also says that you have to re do clockwork every time you want to flash a ROM...
If the Nexus S hits Sprint, you better believe I'll be selling my EVO to buy one.
1. The earlier you sell your EVO, the more you can get for it.
2. Nexus S will sell for a lot more than the EVO by the time HTC has a dual-core badboy on the market.
You see what I did there?
I'd say Evo, but that's because I've had nothing less than perfectness from my own Evo. However, the Evo 3D was announced/leaked, so I'd wait on that, because truthfully that sounds loads better than the OG Evo. But, anyways, the Nexus S is also (I'd imagine) going to be one of the phones at the top of the list for updates since, as the adds say, it is "pure Google." and they love to roll out updates, whereas the Evo is moving down the ranks with all the new phones announced at MWC and the like. Also the Evo is a beast of a phone, much larger than the Nexus S. It's really hard to define a clear cut answer, just do research and pick the phone that provides what YOU want from it.

Really? Its a Nexus phone... While I personally dont love the Samsung construction of mine, there is something to be said of Nexus.
Part of that is the hack-ability, fastboot oem unlock. Same as N1. Literally two adb commands to root a NexusS, and recovery works just fine. Although I gotta say I miss AmonRa when using my Nexus, I just cant get used to Clockwork...
Both phones rock. NS is far beyond Evo internal wise, but I like the feel and look of my Evo far more. Only knock I have against the Evo (since buying a seidio3500, and having it last 48hours+) is the QSD8650 and Adreno200. Been available since the Eee pc in 2009....Not exactly new tech, and holy poop does my NS do 3d games like a different class of phones compared to my Evo. But then I go to HDMI the ***** to the TV for some N64oid+wiimote and....o yeah...
Edit: Forgot to mention, I think I'm gonna craigslist my NS for something dual core, if that says anything.
^^^^ see that's what I don't understand is the adb commands. How do I open the command prompts?

At the moment, the evo 3d has a locked boot loader, I know that people are trying to change that though. The samsung has twice the memory for apps(2GB), and 32GB of internal storage. Look for a side by side comparisson, that is what got me to switch from the evo 3d to the gs2.

HTC said it will be unlocked ... and i just got an email from sprint advertising the E3D so its coming SOON !!! .... 24th to be exact its OFFICIAL!!!
but honestly they are both great phones either way you wont be disappointed the choice for me was easy this time Evo has and amazing community also its not Samsuck its HTC and HTC=OMGEWQTHGDSHTRSYGDF
Galaxy S II
- Better hardware
- Comes with 2.3
- No 3D (pro for me)
Both have manufactures crappy UI so not part of my opinion
I am wondering the same... I just got my epic a month ago but was already looking into getting the evo 3d... all this jibber jabber back and forth about the sgs2 and 3d has got me all confused now lol. So I don't know which one I will be getting. I've always loved htc though!
I got that same email this morning but thought it was just another one of those emails that just said coming soon. So the 24th is official huh?

I've realized what i like in a phone now i thought i would like a keyboard... but i rarely use it.
I thought sprint would have put alot more into this phone ...because of the Specs but they honestly didn't IMO. So im going to the E3D .... Even though i will miss this community like crazy these people are mad cool.
but 1.5GHz Dual-core, 2.3, official CM support.... and it's HTC can't deny build quality.
I don't see sprint releasing anything else so this has to be it.
Question does the dual core in a cell phone work like a pc meaning a 1.5 ghz dual core when using both cores its actually a 3 ghz phone? Yeah?

I'm going for GSII. I don't trust htc unlocking the bootloader. Besides gsii has better specs anyways. I think with all the crap from htc more developers will get the GSII than most people think.

No. They share the workload, rather than a single core constantly being mated out.
HTC EVO 3D will have a lot more development for it (EVO 4G has like 20+ roms, whereas the Epic has about 8, in total).
I also tend to think HTC have better radios (signal wise).
I'll wait until the GS3 or whatever is out when my 2 year contact is up or my epic runs into something it can't run which I really want. If I had to pick between the two, I'd grab the GS2.

It's been rumored that they started doing this when the EVO 3D was announced.
HTC officially announced the Evo 4g+. http://www.htc.com/kr/product/evo4g+/overview.html

This phone is rumored to go to sprint. Its pretty much the evo3d minus the 3d I guess. 4.3" screen 1 gb ram.
My question is, what would you pick out of the three, Galaxy S II, HTC Evo 4G+, or HTC Evo3D?
Ps. I tried my best to search through the forums looking for a poll like this but the search function was down so I had to do it manually. Sorry if I repeat someone else.

I need keyboard phones so Epic is still my choice..
But if I had to choose out of those 3 it would definitely be Galaxy S II! I mean lets rehash..whats the difference between Evo 4g+ and Evo3d? the 3d and the camera? so end of the day SGS 2 still wipes the floor with both of them...
If Samsung is gonna continue being a good little boy and continuing the same trend that they have going with the original Galaxy S line (a phone for all major carriers with minor differences), then I'm holding out for an SGSII with slide-out keyboard. If they decide not to make one, then screw Samsung I'm going with something else. Dual Core 1gb RAM Epic 2 anyone? And please oh please Samsung wait for Kal-El before popping a Tegra in it. That would make my dreams come true

Samsung might not know much about customer relations, but they aren't idiots. The Moment replacement will be single core 2nd gen snapdragon and the Epic replacement will be Exynos
I know GSII will be dual core for Sprint, but according to Thisismynext, Epic successor w/ keyboard will have 1.2 ghz single-core, kinda like the Infuse. WDM (whosdaman and sprint employee) said so too.

I've heard about those rumors, but they sound a bit ridiculous to me for a couple of reasons:
1. There is no benefit to releasing anything under the "Epic" name, it didn't sell that well, doesn't have name recognition and definitely is known for being super late to he updated.
2. Even if they were to release a single core phone from Samsung, the "Moment 3" or whatever they call it will already have filled the niche market of low-mid range tiered keyboard phones, there is no reason to have multiple competing phone with no real difference.

No marketing, lack of interest in a phone for 249.99 when the Evo was hyped to the max and selling for 199.99 and had accessories.
The D600 (aka Conquer) is coming soon as a replacement for the Transform, meaning it's a low (mid) end 4G slider with a full keyboard, but a 1ghz processor and a low(ish) res screen.
The Within is going to be the dual core high-end slim slab phone to compete with the E3D and Photon.
There's not really any room in between for anything that would replace the epic to be considered the EPIC 2, unless they want to have another GSII but with a keyboard, there's no reason Sprint/Samsung would make it.
If we get something replacing the EPIC, it would need to be something thinner, lighter, with a decent battery, better resolution display, and a faster processor for it to be considered a sequel, and would likely be released a while after the within (otherwise we would have seen some specs about it already.)
Also, consider that sprint doesn't usually use sequel naming, so rather than Epic 2, it would be called something different anyway. (There have been exceptions with LG, but samsung is not known for it.)
Also long as we get an sgs2 than I'm good...but if we do get a epic 2 than I want.......1.5 ghz dual core....1gb of ram....hdmi out....4-4.5" screen....android 4.0...3D cameras.... and ASOP

My idea for epic 2 would be 4.2 inch super amoled plus 8 megapixel camera back & 2 megapixel in front a 1.3 dual core processer a 5 row slide out keybord that slides up at an angle so you could watch movie or get online slide up as in it would look like a mini laptop also I would take out smiley button & put one of those little blackberry scrolling balls on right side so when your using the keyboard with the screen slanted at angle you can use that scrolling ball like a mouse! That would be the the best phone out hands down tel me not matter in fact im about to write a letter to ceo of sprint & samsung with my idea & tell them you don't have to pay me for my idea but just give me the phone a month before anyone get it!

Sprint says, the Epic 4g & EVO phones will be phased out, no longer available starting Oct-2011.

I bought the hero on launch day and wanted to upgrade to a nexus 1 but sprint wasnt getting it and instead revealed the EVO which I wanted at first. Luckily, my upgrade wasn't until october of 2010 which meant I had to wait to get my EVO (because I loved my Hero and it looked like a logical upgrade lol) and then that's when samsung dropped the Galaxy S bomb.
The specs on the Galaxy S Pro (our "Epics") were AMAZING. 1GB RAM, 16GB ROM, SD Slot, TV-Out, keyboard, vga FFC (only letdown compared to EVO) and all of that in a package the SAME SIZE as my hero? GOTTA GET IT.
Then sprint realized how much money they wasted marketing the Evo (inferior phone) and instead gimped the epic so people will go for the vo which looked so much better on paper so the average consumer won't know they're getting jipped :/

Specs, keyboard. 4G was a bonus, but I didn't have it at the time. Sprint was known to be non-evil. And I really needed an upgrade - HTC Fuze on AT&T which was on its way out.
It was an pretty overall good phone when I bought it

I had a flip phone on SERO and I wanted a smart phone. I almost gave up waiting and tried the Captivate on ATT. I could not adjust to the virtual keyboard.
The Epic has a hardware keyboard like a previous (windows) smart phone I had years ago. When they allowed the SERO plan to be upgraded for the Epic, I ordered it first day.
I was also originally going for the EVO also, but then I realized I needed to research before buying lol.
So I ended up going for the Epic. For the keyboard and the Hummingbird processor was superior to the Snapdragon. Plus the Epic's camera sensor was also better than the EVO's.
Also first Android phone with the Epic, its been a great experience.

I mainly bought for the keyboard, oh and HTC...
I was coming from an HTC Touch Pro 2 (which I was given because the Touch Pro 1 I had was replaced 3 times due to a faulty slide). Needless to say I was a little down on HTC and WM.
4G was a nice little bonus but I don't care about it and rarely use it.
Edit: The Epic was also my first Android phone so it was nice to learn something new too!
I bought a Moment in March '10 and it was severely underwhelming. I did a lot of research on the Epic and fell in love with it. I'm still pleased with my overall experience on this phone.

The sgx 545
Edit: sgx 540 I saw it had 1/3 the triangles per second as the ps3

I bought mine when i first got a job because i switched to sprint on my parents line and they got me a ****ty flip phone...
I picked it over the Evo because of the samoled screen and because of the keyboard.
i was iffy about it because the updates were slowwww. but i dont regret it at all and if i had the same choice to make, id make the same choice.
<3 this phone.
Keyboard, SAMOLED 4" screen, 4G, best mobile CPU. Came from a BB on Sprint and a Nokia "dumb phone" on AT&T, and wanted to consolidate to using only 1 phone, and Sprint has the best price plans for my needs.

Btw, we have sgx540
And I moved to epic from verizon so I could get a smartphone while keeping an arm and a leg. I had an lg env touch which was a decent feature phone with an awful resistive touchscreen, but decent keyboard. And before that I had the verizon coupe flip phone complete with a 911 button and several in case of emergency buttons. I think it was meant as a "last phone" for the elderly, but I got it as my first phone.
Picked the epic because of the keyboard, super amoled, and hummingbird processor and great gpu powervr sgx540.

I was coming from the Rant and it was like a big fancy version of it.
I had the hero as well . I was upgrade eligible but the only choices were evo & epic so I was just gonna wait it out. That was until best buy had the Epic free for a week so I jumped on it. I was actually a sense guy at that point and was leaning more toward the evo.... Glad that sale changed my mind..love this phone!
I came from the rumor touch 2... and I picked it over the evo because the wife had an evo and I hated it! Don't regret for one second the decision I made... I love this phone!

For me, it was a no-brainer. I came to Sprint from Verizon Wireless and I had the Samsung "Rogue" multimedia 3G phone. I loved the slide out keyboard and the AMOLED display. The Epic is basically the Rogue on steroids. It's nearly a year since I bought it, my first smartphone ever. I'm still happy with it, thanks in no small part to all the awesome people here on XDA and everything everyone contributed. There's no way I would've been able to enjoy this phone and its full potential without all the awesome apps, themes, kernels, and ROMS and the knowledge and understanding to use them. I'm lucky that my first smartphone experience has been such a positive one so far.
Only android Sprint had at the time that had a keyboard. A smartphone without a real keyboard just makes me feel like I have to tie my hands behind my back and use my toes. No thanks.
Keyboard.
Came from touchpro to touchpro2. There was no htc slider available at the time.
I was holding out for the htc arrive (windows phone). I'm glad I went for android before that thing came out...

WindowsMobile died. Coming from the TP2 and every KB phone before it, it was a no-brainer for me.

I was an OG Touch Pro user and with all its flaws I knew a smartphone with keyboard and touchscreen (it was one of the first, resistive natch) was the stuff to continue to have. But Android was clearly for me too--OG WinMo was hell. So combined with the awesome hardware and 4G it was the clear choice. The screen also still dazzles. Any time I see people *****ing about the Epic all I have to do is think back to 2008 and LOL.
