Repair [Q] - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a my touch 4g that I purchased a few months back from someone and did not know that it had water damage until i took the unit apart. Saw that the mother boards water damage sticker was pink (the outside one was white). Her is my issue, the phone works, only problem is Loses signal sometimes, and has a hard time in auto mode (GSM, WCDMA) in order for it to work it must be on WCDMA ONLY. I have the new sim card and i have put it into another mytouch 4g and works great. Now is there anything I can do to fix it. Or does anyone have a motherboard for sale?

so no one has any ideas?

When I bricked my phone when I was new to this root world months back, I called tmobile and told them it just happen on its own after restart and won't turn in and got a replacment for free with the 1 year manufacturer's warranty. Now I got phone from tmobile not a random person but call tmobile and see if u might still be available for warranty coverage.

Just to let you know, water damage pretty voids ANY warranty. Be it from the manufacturer or from T-Mo. Thats one thing they ALWAYS check for when you send a phone in for replacement so I wouldnt recommend doing so.

Sending G1 in

Hello, sorry for this question, but i just recently switched from the ATT tilt 1 and got a G1 from my friend, but its severely messed up and i took it to a repairman, and he said he couldn't do anything about it. I was wondering if i could send it in to HTC or something since there is a 1 year warranty. I did it with my Samsung phone which i got from a friend, just wondering if it would work for this G1
Thank you
Depends on what was severely messed up about the device. If it was damage that your friend did, I doubt HTC would repair it for free. (Assuming it is still under warranty. You can call HTC to verify the warranty with the serial number.)
i baught ny g1 off ebay and it was cheap. the buyer said it had connectivity problems... i baught it and tested and it did iin fact have problems. i called
htc wondering the same thing if it had a warrantry or not. surprisingly or not it did... and i told there where i baught it and that i had it unlocked and rooted. they said as long as the void sticker isnt broken, water damage, or dropp damage, or custom roms installed the would fix it...which they did
Should be able to revert to stock and send it in then. That's good news for you.
thank you all! the problem is, lol it doesnt liek even start up, i dont really know how it works, but it vibrates and goes to a bright dark screen and just stays there. There was no physical damage and the sticker is still there, guess i can send it in! wooohoo

[Q] How generous are T-Mobile with replacement phones?

I ordered my Slide online the day it was released. It WORKS fine. The issue I have with it is so minor, many people may not normally notice it. Basically, when I slide the keyboard out, the left side of the screen stops a fraction of an inch before the right. I'm talking like maybe 1/6th of an inch or something, very minor.
I do have a small scuff on the top corner of the phone where I dropped it, though the drop was not the cause of the issue.
Is this anything you would try to exchange your phone for? Am I being too picky? Would they simply tell me no?

I have been with T-Mobile for over 5 years and any time I have had a problem no matter how small they have replaced my phone with no question. I have the mt3gs and have had it for 2 months and I am having a issue with it and they suggested right off to just send me a replacement so this week it should be here. They don't really care about scuff marks though I never have dropped mine so not sure. They refurbish them anyway so don't sweat it...
Well think of it like this, I had an hd2, had some data troubles (region specific). Went Through 3 hd2's before they were allowed to exchange. Offered me a blackberry said no I wanted the slide. They sent me a new in box slide and I got to keep the hd2, all free.
Id say that's rather generous

That's very generous, did you have to threaten to leave or anything? Also how long have you been with tmo?

I guess it certainly won't hurt to give them a call then! Thanks!

No, it's just their basic policy (sort of). Let me explain. I was past the 14 day period... but had issues with the phone... being that i was within the 1 year warranty they did an HD2 exchange (sent out refurb). I still had the same data issue, so i called back and asked if i could get different phone because it doesnt appear to be a defective handset, just perhaps bad in this area. They said "yes, but you need to have at least 3 phone replacements in a 90day period before they have that option" so a few phones later i called back asking for a phone swap... (They conclude "similar phone" based on price)
They offered me a BB 9800(?) because it has similar MSRP and business features. I said would prefer an android device (was hoping for the vibrant but its msrp is 499) so they offered me a MTS ($430).
The slide wasnt in the (available options) on their page so they had to set it up manually.. which meant it was technically a new phone purchase at full value... so they just charged the full value on the account... and credited it back on the same invoice...
Which is why i got to keep the HD2
Also ive been with tmo for quite some time around 9 years or so... maybe a little less
LOL. Chatting with a rep online right now about it. I explained that one side of the keyboard popped out further than the other and she told me we'd have to do a master reset. I told her I didn't think that would work.
Yeah, they're replacing it. Yippee!
yeah their a good company when it comes to replacing phones. I went throw 3 G1's. Ones battery life was horrible for some reason. Replaced. Second was the replacement that got stolen in the mail.......that was a ***** just make sure you CHECK THE PACKAGE when before you sign for it, my sister thought it was ok to take an empty box from the person thinking it was to send mine back but really the driver jacked the phone. Third. I bricked my G1 pretending to be a developer and messing with things i shouldnt have been.
GL with your replacement bro
Hi I have a quick question I do a lot of deals on craigslist when it comes to phones. I get bored of something then put it on craigslist for trade. I currently have the mytouch slide and my issue is the camera. I've googled it quite a few people have this problem. The camera is just blurry I tried auto focus the whole 9. The thing is I got it from a personal sale/trade. Would tmobile still be able to replace it? I want to call CC but want to see you guys opinions first. Thanks in advance.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
Yup, that was why I had to send my first slide in.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
Per company policy you can do 1 instore warrenty exchange for a brand new slide instead of the possible refurbished replacement you could get from customer care. Make sure its a corporate store and if they tell you no they can't. Tell them to look it up on streamline they will know what you mean.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
I just received an replacement slide. Mine had the fuzzy camera issue.
The replacement came does not come with battery nor back cover, nor any other accessories at all. I should have exchanged it at the corp store instead.
At least the camera works better and has a new revision "XD" My old one is revision "XC"
You have to have 3 replacement phones before they can offer you the vibrant. And you will have to pay the difference in price.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
So im thinking about returning mine because of the blurry camera issue but the moisture indicator under the battery is partly red. Basically it looks as if the corner of the battery kept rubbing on it from all the times I had to remove it while trying to root. Do any of you think it will be an issue? I thought that I read something before about there being multiple indicators in the phone, the one on the battery is still all the way white.
They definitely asked about the moisture indicator and told me that if it is red, I will be charged $100 out of warranty fee for the replacement.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
Its only partly red so I'm hoping they will just ignore it. The phones never been near water I really think its just red where the corner of battery drags accross it
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
thats a lie i try to exchange to a different phone and they tell me that they will give me the same disney phone they exchange it 3 times already thats nuts
They will charge you. And its not from ur battery rubbing it.
Did u take it in the bathroom when you got a shower or hot bath? Biggest place for moisture to get in phone and not know it. Still $100 isn't bad to replace a water dmged phone
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
I'm on my 3rd slide an the one I had before this one got a little wet. some how on the back an the. moisture indicator on it turned red. so when I recieved the replacement
Phone I just took the new white. sticker off an put it on the phone I. was sending back. Never heard anything else about it so guess it worked. Hee hee

dust under the screen?

I have only been using this phone for about a week. has anyone has this problem and send it to htc to repair? does this cover under warranty??
This was a huge issue with my MT3G Slide. If I remember correctly, it is a warranty issue. You can send it to HTC or (not sure) I think T-Mobile will replace it. The problem is with the glue that holds the digitizer to the screen, it's crap.
Also, when you get your new phone go into a dark room and check for light leaks. Probably under the top shell so open the keyboard and look on the back side of the screen.
i have had my desire z for nearly 2 months now, no dust yet
I was in your spot a few weeks ago. Dust just magically accumulated under the screen one night. A few days later it bugged me so much I called T-mobile, explained that there is dust underneath the screen and that there is no physical damage on the phone. They sent out a replacement that night and I got it 3 days later. No issues no cost to me free shipping both ways.
They did this for me on a used phone I brought in too, so I'm sure there would be no issue getting yours replaced if its new especially.

I had the same issue caused by the screen not being aligned properly with the casing which left a 1mm gap between the the screen and casing allowing dust and fluff to seep through. It's a manufacturing fault so just send it back to htc. If you're rooted, best to unroot first, you don't want to give them any ammunition;, )

It's covered on warranty, you don't have to pay for anything, best to contact htc via email to keep a paper trail on things. They will send out a courier to pick up your phone, it's only a simple procedure so it shouldn't take long.

when i contact htc.... they said "At that stage the choice is given to either go ahead with the repair or have the phone returned. To have the phone returned a fee of approximately £20 for courier costs and the evaluation is applicable." which makes me slightly confused
you still have dust problem after the fix?
Had my g2 for like 4 month no dust. That's good am with T-mobile. They will replace your phone even if you have the the smallest problem.

I'm slightly confused myself, the way I interpret your text is that after evaluation should you decide not to have your phone repaired then they will charge you for courier costs to have your phone returned to you. Like I said previously it should be covered by warranty so you won't have to pay a penny.
After repair, the dust problem is soughted.
Depending on how bad the dust is...take your phone and repeatedly, but lightly tap it on a table...the dust particle will eventually, make it to the edge of the screen and get "stuck there" and you won't be able to see it anymore. At least, most of the time, it will.
verkion
Dust problem does get worse..... only time I am free enough to let htc collect my phone is easter....
Mm... I will try the tap method.......

What a bummer, that's a long wait. Just so that you're aware it doesn't have to be your home address, you can use friends, family, work etc. address. The courier can just pick up/drop off even when you're not there.

I don't know if this thread is still alive, i hope it is.
Well, I got my G2 just about a couple of weeks ago. Got it off kijiji, cuz the gentleman who sold it to me told me that it has warranty till september 2011, i decided to buy it. It still does have warranty. It has got 2 problems, 1 with battery, the phone is s-off, rooted, and modded with CM Nightly RC1, and the battery just runs out very quickly, i have to charge the phone atleast twice a day. and 2nd is with he screen, it has got dust underneath, on right hand top corner, so i decided to call htc directly and find out if i can send the phone off for repair, and if i could get a replacement battery.
The girl on the other side was nice enough that she is sending me a new battery, so one problem will be solved, then I asked her if i can send the phone back to them to get it fixed.
I am actually worried about 2 things. One is how do I put the stock rom back on the phone? I am not a great modder and don't really know(i think little bit research will help, as i found this thread after search) and two is i am really afraid of htc charging me for something i might not have done. such as liquid damage. physically the phone looks great. no scratches or any sort of physical dent marks. but liquid damage is something really scares me out.
what should I do?
I need some advise from my fellow xda folks... Please help me out...
As far as i know, if you grab the official firmware from bell, (i assume bell because you said kijiji and that is normally canadian), load that up and make sure your recovery is stock, htc will not even know if you had a custom rom in it.
As for the water damage, there is usually a small white sticker where the battery usually sits. This sticker changes colour if it is exposed to excessive moisture. If this sticker is still white, then you are fine.

Not actually, i got the G2 off kijiji, the tmobile version which i use for my wind mobile sim card.
I called htc directly and the girl on the other side said the phone is fixable being in canada but i m just curious and concern about the charges they might apply to fix this... i asked her specifically that if i m in canada are you sure there will be no charge for me to pay? she said, we will require your credit card which has at least a dollar value on it, just for security(which i thought is weird as i have N1 i had to sent out for repair and they didn't ask for my credit card info... i asked her and she said N1 and G2 are two different cases handled by two different operational teams, they don't require info for N1 as its a Google phone, while G2 is sold by tmobile, my cc info they will use in case if there is any liquid or physical damage and i will have to pay for at least shipment back which is $35)
regarding the sticker, i can see a small white rounded sticker underneath the battery which is fairly white so far... i assume that's the one and doesn't look like it has changed color significantly, but I am still afraid - i think i might color blind... lol... i had a problem before with rogers bb bold, where i sent the phone in for repair and they said it has got liquid damage as the sticker has turned blue and i had to pay $250 for it...
That's the reason I need suggesions from ya'll people... how can I make sure my phone is damage free and can get the dust problem fixed?
i am really scared and totally confused...

Ahh, just wanted to clarify since I didn't see any of the T-Mobile versions on Kijiji when I did my shopping.. If that's the case and you have the G2, then you should be able to pop by the T-Mobile site and grab the stock ROM off them. I also saw a list of stock roms somewhere on this site for the DZ/G2.
If the water sticker is whitish, then it's still good. As long as it's not red/pink or blue, those would be a sure sign of water damage.
The only reason why they would need a credit card, in my opinion, is for any unexpected charges that they would apply to it in the case of a necessary repair that is not covered under warranty. But other than that, I wouldn't know why else.
I hope you get it sorted out.
Regards.

Anyone have warranty issue with Sony?

Very poor service from Sony, few months ago I sent the phone back for warranty repair, due to logic board failure. They sent back a replacement handset with most of the print faded off the sticker on the behind the battery. Just able to see the imei, phone had the same problem again 6 weeks ago. This time they told me phone was dropped and physically damaged and not cover by warranty, but the phone has never been dropped, not even a tiny scratch on it, been on to them 4 times, they just not willing to repair or replace the faulty phone. Its less than a year since phone was bought. Anyone else have issues like this with Sony? I hope they will never get a sell on their phone anymore.

The x10 is built to fail.
I sent mine in 5 times before they finally replaced my board. 4 months later i am having problems again.
i am more pissed at their 1 year warranty.
Why the hell this expensive phone have only 1 year warranty.
make it 2 year at least especially how many people get phone base on 2-3 years contract.
I am glad they get hacked, it bring me justice to see they lose money but on the other hand, they will just shift their burden over to customers.
I promise myself, this is the last sony product (other then game console) i will ever buy.
They care about profit above all else so use the cheapest repair option.
Sent mine in had to ring em up to stop em just sending it back with a software reinstalation. Eventually they replaced the motherboard and managed to put loads of dents in it and scratch it everywhere!
Now it's started to have the same restarting problem again! Becoming more and more frequent like last time. Hope the warranty isn't 1 year as mines just run out

I've heard from some other members that they got their X10s back from service with dents and scratches. Also, in another case, SE replaced a sim-free phone under warranty with a sim-locked one!!!
I am wondering: aren't they supposed to give the phone back in a better condition?
I think if they can assemble the phone without dents, then why do they have to do the dents when they are repairing? This just doesn't make any sense to me.

HTC repair centre does it again :(

After reading the horror stories about the HTC repair centre I thought I was one of the lucky ones.
The touchscreen on my HD2 completely failed, rang the repair centre at around 11.00am last friday and they collected the phone the same day.
6 Days later my repaired phone is returned, on unboxing and inspection I notice that all 4 of the screws used to hold the phone together under the battery cover are missing.
I now have had to raise another ticket request, return the phone yet again tomorrow and wait probably another 6 days for its return
Is your HD2? TMOUS? Or EU? If it's TMOUS if your still in warranty you could just get a brand new one. Honestly the HTC Repair place sucks, a friend of mine wanted his Nexus One repaired and it came back without a battery D:
its a EU version

That's because you are supposed to send it without any battery, sim, sd card, battery cover, etc.
I personally had an HD2 repaired by HTC because of the overheating issue which would freeze the phone and was pretty impressed overall. They repaired (replaced the main board) and sent it back the same day. They didn't charge me for international shipping despite being in Canada.
A few things did go wrong though they almost sent it to the wrong address. (made a mistake with my address on the phone originally)
Also the phone I sent was unlocked but when I received the repaired phone it was locked. They unlocked it but had to wait several days for the unlock code.
