Lag after 2.3 OTA - Atrix 4G General

So i got the OTA update (i actually wiped my phone to start clean).. and the phone runs snappy, except for the home screen... scrolling through them is pretty laggy..
best described its like having 2.2 with a live background. just not smooth at all.
my atrix with 2.2 ran ALOT smoother on the homescreen (and yes this bothers me)... apps are fast etc, but its just choppy.
has anyone noticed this? i installed launcher pro to use for now and its smooth as butter..

me too felt the same .. had to install launcher pro in order for a smoother experience. Overall, i felt the screen seemed to be less responsive .. except for Gingerbread goodies .. i completely disliked this update. Battery issues, homescreen scrolling slow, touchscreen less responsive ..

it definitely is slower
and i miss the little buttons at the bottom for jumping to a screen

@viper: it is only changed. You can "swap Home" swiping from bottom (over fixed icons area) upwards the middle of the screen. In this way you can choose quickly what "home" to reach.

first post for me actually used to search thing found this thread, but besides alot of the awesome new features the lag on the home screen has really be bothering me
Even alot of my apps that were fine in froyo are now lagging, i haven't rooted, unlocked the bootloader or anything, i was personally waiting for this update to come out before i started to mess with any of that stuff, but for me everything besides opera mobile is noticably laggy. But for some reason opera is alot smoother

Slower?
My stock gingerbread runs so much better than Froyo. Infact even the Live Wallpapers have no effect on home screen scrolling. For the first time since I bought the phone I am not running any launcher as the new Blur runs just fine.
I did a factory reset soon after upgrading. May be you guys should try that.

opposite for me gingerbread much snappier.
launcher pro noticeably faster than ADW EX (which was what I used to use) so made the jump

tried that
seems to have had the opposite effect lol
noticeably slower now
for giggles i ran smartbench again and i'm now only getting around 2500 for productivity
1000 worse than before

My phone (completely stock) also lags since the upgrade. Home screen lags and some apps lag. Battery life is worse. The task bar looks horrible and many of the symbols hard to recognize. Froyo, with the exception of the unlock lag, was faster and smoother on my phone. I regret upgrading now but, unfortunately, I did not make a contingency plan for downgrading.

Yeah i may try a factory reset... just not sure how much it will help me though because i reset my device before i upgraded.
On another note, i actually rather like launcher pro... i might just keep it.

X10 smoothness

Ive always really liked my x10 and coming from a bb storm is was a huge improvement. The one thing thats always driven me nuts about the phones is that all the scrolling, weather it be in menus or the home screen has always been choppy compared to say the iphone. I recently had the chance to use a galaxy s and it too way farr smoother than my x10. Is there anything that can be done to improve this?
root it, delete facerecognition.apk and enable jit
that was the biggest improvement i made
yea my phone is rooted, im pretty sure I have enabled JIT I'm running about 17.5 MFLOPS on Linpack. Ill have to see if facerecognition is still there. Is it constantly running in the background or something?
Are you running the default launcher? If so launcher pro and adw would be a nice choice. As compared to the iphone, no android device will be as smooth until android implement hw acceleration to the UI.
yea I have launcher pro plus, it was a huge improvement ill admit, I was just thrown off at how smooth the galaxy s is. Guess ill just have to live with it
Yea I think he's asking why is the galaxy s is like silky smooth in terms of scrolling and such but not the x10. Both are android phones with 1ghz processor.
I think the reason why is that the galaxy s has a better GPU chip? or a dedicated one? That's what I heard so maybe that's why? Correct me if i'm wrong.
Possibly, but also some widgets can slow it down. For instance i just installed animated contact widget and suddenly my scrolling lags after adding three contacts. I removed it and voila, adw ex is running like crazy again...
Sent from my x32 using the licking write method....man I am thirsty now!
Same here. Using adw ex now, have the scrollable calendar and folder organiser with no effect, but when facebook or contact widgets are added it goes into bullet time... think there's cache issues with the X10. Then again, updated on Xmas eve and lost root.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
you can't solve the smoothness problem on the x10 with software :/ the main problem with this phone is acually the screen.. it's not very responsive and it takes a moment to register your finger. this makes scrolling and everything else laggy compared to other phones with the same hardware
for instance the game fruit ninja is almost unplayable bacause of this.

I think you are describing the 30 frames per second limit that SE has implemented on the screen.
Go to the website below and look at the 30 FPS and then 60 FPS. Is this the problem you are describing?

Hey There,
I´ve added this command line: windowsmgr.max_events_per_sec=26 to my build.prop and it feels smother whenever you´re going around the homescreen or appdrawer.
You should give it a try....
Ps. You can add that line at the bottom of your build.prop using Root Explorer.
Jim
I got root explorer, i found build.prop in /system/. How do I edit it?
There's no edit option?
you are using launcher pro.
go into the launcher pro settings and there you can change the scrolling speed and smoothness.
turn off the elastic effect and speed up drawer and scrolling speeds.
should be much smoother now.

Hmmm...weird because I thought the X10 was much smoother than the Galaxy S...which is why I sold the Galaxy and got back my beloved X10. I didn't like the Galaxy when compared to the X10. Im rooted, deleted timescape, face recognition, etc etc...huge improvements.
I think my X10 is pretty smooth. Compared to my friend's Galaxy S I think its even better. Although mine is rooted and cleared and his is not.

At the top of Root Explorer is an option select the one that says r/w (read/write) and then long press on build.prop and at the end of the pop-up menu choose open in text editor... that way you can add the command line...
I hope this helps.

I am almost 100% sure the problem is the 32fps cap SE placed on this phone. Total and utter garbage! Until we are able to modify the X10's kernel, there will be no improvement to the smoothness you are referring to.
And to the guys who's used both the galaxy S and X10 and think the X10 is smoother, pass me some of that stuff you're smoking will ya?

Agree, in quadrants 700 vs. 1850. Neomark 27 fps vs. 56 fps.
X10 is so much underperforming at the moment, that I could cry. It's so much similar to the Nexus One. Blame SE.

[Q] Smoothness... I want more

I just got my TF 6 hrs ago and I am not impressed with how smooth the main screens are when scrolling sideways. It looks like it is stuttering. I want it as smooth as my Pyromod G2.
I was hoping that the 3.1 update fixes this but I just got the update and still stuttering.
Is there any solution other than rooting and overclocking to the max. Is there a launcher settings that I can adjust?
My home screen is really smooth. But I am using regular wallpaper and not the live one.
I guess the first thing to do would be to use the same launcher if it's supported on Honeycomb. I like the HC launcher myself. Every now and then it's a little slow when it first gets going or after being off for a while but nothing that effects usability. I guess the issue might be that you're comparing a hacked, customized and tweaked Android 2.x device moving 800x480 pixels to a whole new unmodified factory OS moving 1200x800 pixels so I would sort of expect it to be a little less optimized from the get go.
I'm running the Primordial 3.1 build right now with the OC kernel at 1.4 GHz and everything just moves right along for me.
So might want to start with apples to apples and go from there.
I noticed my Transformer had started feeling really sluggish and I hadn't even installed much. I was rebooting often and it seemed to help a little for a short time. Then I just removed an application I installed recently and wow, performance was smooth again.
That app was TweetCaster Pro, something I grabbed as a free app of the day from the Amazon Appstore. Don't know if it was just that app or maybe some weird combination that didn't like each other. *shrug* But things are a lot smoother. So it might be worth looking at some of your apps, especially those that install background services that like to look for updates frequently.
ADW EX you won't get any smoother than that
For twitter i use Tweetcomb, totally awesome
LauncherPro also runs really smooth on Tegra devices.
Stock Google launchers typically aren't very smooth, especially on a brand new chipset.
does other launcher show the app icon as big as hc stock launcher? more icon and widget sure will slow down the animation, but I found that by tapping the most left or right side of the screen will take you to other page with faster animation n of course it is smoother
mine is really smooth...probably one of the apps you installed is not getting along well with the honeycomb

With ADW EX you can change the size of the icons to any size you want!
Change the icon to any picture.
Change the speed of the animation.
Change the bounce!
The only thing ADW EX doesn't do is hold it for you when you take a leak
I currently have 7 pages 5 of which are full of widgets (and i mean full), no sticking EVER

It was still a virgin TF but it was not meeting my expectations. Maybe because I am used to a smother one.
Anyway, I installed Launcher Pro Plus, (I remember I purchased this before) and the performance improved a little bit. I wonder if the ADW EX is better.
I really don't want to root this TF but I really crave the smoothness that I find in my G2 so I have no choice but to root it when I get my extra Micro SDHC. BTW, does the new ROMS support/Include ASUS MyCloud, MyNet, .. etc.
Also, I've read that Netflix and Yahoo Messenger Video chat isn't fully working yet.
All in all, other than those intangible (software) shortcomings I still like the TF hardware. Softwares will get fixed soon, but crappy hardware will stay crappy forever in the tablet world.
The rooted roms are all up to date and are built using the OTA releases so yea all the asus software is still included
Try turning off the animations.
Live wallpapers murder performance. If you select a static one, your performance will be far better. Next would be widgets; try and keep them to a minimum if you can.

Venting: Why is the homescreen so laggy?

This seems to be such a common problem for android phones and tablets. Even with deodexed, slimmed, optimized roms and overclocked kernels, it just boggles my mind that the homescreen is the slowest part of the android experience. Other apps scroll smoothly and are responsive, but the homescreen is jerky and slow.
Try this: Long click an icon and drag it around the screen. The thing can't follow even a moderately fast-moving finger. And that's just a simple icon moving on a 2d plane. But then, I can run a playstation emulator in 3d without problems.
The same thing has been true on my G1, SGS, Droid Charge, GTab 10.1, and Moto Droid 1.
Am I missing something?
i dunno mayne its the snap to grid that causes it because flipping back and forth from pane to pane is smooth.
Coming from the transformer, this was the first thing i actually noticed. One thing that would help is to change the default wallpaper to one of your own. It actually improves it significantly

I have a Xoom on 3.2 and the home screen is really smooth. I have looked at many Touchwiz videos on Youtube and it seems very laggy compared to my Xoom. But i guess i will soon see it in person, just ordered a GT10.1 3G.
Only reason that your tab or phone are laggy on homescreen is due to either wallpaper or widget,
To fix it get wallpaper wizardrii and set to no scroll.
In regards to the icons well notice that you have additional few more effects when you tap and hold icons, there is stransparency, grid etc. If you want to move icons from app dock to homescreen it shows both at the same time, and homescreen is active not paused.
Ios will never be able to do this there is just to much
At the moment my tab is acting really weird.
My wallpaper is scrolling although it should not, screen is absolutely jitter free all that happened since I've activated kies via wifi and deselected usb debugging (needed it to install drivers)

Can't say mine is laggy at all but I'm not using the stock launcher. The latest "UEKMB" slim Launcher2 with enabled hw acceleration and Multipicture LWP looks and feels extremely smooth. I have no comparison to another Honeycomb Tablet but I can't really see it getting noticeable "smoother".

I have the same problem.... Before the Touchwiz update my homescreen was very laggy, after the update it became less lagy but you can still feel it when scrolling which, I gotta tell you is the most annoying thing... IS there any way to make my homescreen smoother? I've tried wallpaper wizardrii which helped but after awhile the wallpaper cuts in half... I have no more than 5 widgets on my Tab and i'm still amazed on how bad the screen lag is.... I
I'm using ADW Launcher EX, and the screen is super smooth/responsive. The latest version has a high-density option, so we still get the big icons. It's $2 or $3 but it's worth it, and the other thing is to disable the scrolling desktop.
Give it a try. I'm not sure why the stock launcher is so choppy, but they could learn something from the folks who made ADW.
-----
Side note: My current ROM/Kernal is completely stock. No root, no OC, and ADW is still silky smooth. BUT... it was even smoother when I was running my Tab at 1400 with AutoKiller.

I just finished installing ADW launcher ex and its A LOT smoother than stock, the transition from landscape to portrait view is still a bit droggy but that's probably because of the widgets. I'm loving the new look ADW gave my tablet.
I too was very frustrated with the homescreen lag on my 10.1. I installed ADW Launcher EX and it has been super smooth and givees you some neat options for homescreen transition effects too. Give it a try.
do a search.
Its because Google has little to no interest in fixing the UI/gpu/hw acceleration issues.
Your phone tablet apps launcher etc have nothing to do with it. Its a fundamental issue with Android that has been ignored and no intention of real fix.

Who made the stock launcher?... Google...
It is well known that Google cuts corners in relation to standardization and hardware acceleration. Instead the focus on incrementally updating release numbers instead.

Lag and framerate drops happen across the ui not just the launcher. It is an Android problem not anything device specific.
I have a standard (scrolling, but not live) wallpaper, 5 widgets and maybe 30 shortcut icons on my desktop/homescreen. Scrolling from one to another is silky smooth (3.1 TW). On one occasion it was quite laggy, it seemed like it had gone from hw accel'd to software for no obvious reason.... Quick reboot fixed it, though.
While it's probably true some performace issues lie with google, I'd wager most problems lie with users and developers doing things badly (or trying to do too much).

A lot of Lag

I got this phone yesterday and I must say it looks gorgeous. I set It up adding my emails, widgets etc and then experienced a lot of lag while scrolling on the social hub widget, even the Internet browser takes ages to load and struggles while scrolling.
I'm really unhappy now as my gs2 didn't face such an issue and i was expecting this to be smoother considering it has a faster processor.
I don't want to root this phone for security reasons.
Is anyone experiencing this issue and is there a solution?
Any info would be helpful.
Thank you.

What widgets are you using?
I have about 15 icons, weather widget and digital clock wiget on one screen and nothing on any of the other screens.
Hmmm that might be the problem. I'm using widgets on every screen. I've gone a bit widget bonkers! Having said that I had the same widgets on the Galaxy S2 and didn't suffer lag issues.

Hi
Hi friends.
I also notice lag and Im using the stock launcher and with almost no widgets.
Apart from the screen issues that one will notice if he uses the devise for reading.
I had the SGS2 before and the difference is noticable.
Such a pitty for such a promising devise.
I changed screen density and only use one screen with go launcher set to have 7x7 grid size. I have 2 widgets, Weather and BBC News, I use upward swipe to open app drawer and not noticed lag at all when in use but I do get around a 1/2 to 1 second delay when pressing power or home to wake the device. Not the end of the world but would be cool if it was instant like the S2.

It's the same on my Samsung Galaxy S2 and it's never changed so I wouldn't worry about it.
There were some threads on the SGS2 forum about ideas on how to fix it if I remember rightly.
I love my note but i would have to agree that SG2 is faster compare to note . ( that make ppl feel like the note is laggy as they have used SG2 before )
؟؟؟
thank God the device is super fast....there is no lag at all.....just hard-reset the device and enjoy it
Launcher Pro is much smoother on my Note than ADW...
ADW EX is lightning fast with density hack at 240, all the others lagged.
Obviously mine is rooted. Also using Roboto font.
I have lag
I am comparing when zooming out all the home screens and then selecting one. The animation is faster and smoother on a HTC 4G. ALSO, sometimes when waking the phone the screen will flash the unlocked screen for a second before the lock screen appears ie see your messages app then you see the lockscreen and have to unlock the phone. I just reset the phone thinking this would help but it didn't. Coming from the iphone I am sad that everything isn't backs up like the iphone without rooting. This lag is more picky than a problem. I don't understated lag when the phone is so powerful.

Yeah I agree, I don't understand the lag with such a powerful device. I suppose it is possible that Samsung has used cheaper, slower dram in this phone. Even the Plus animation when the phone boots micro-stutters. Of well, hopefully in a month we can get our hands on the Nexus.

That's the nature of Android, because so many manufacturers can use it, developers need to program apps for all of them in mind and seeing they all have the potential to utilise different hardware you can't expect a developer to be able to foresee these things.
What we need to do is just put a request to the developers and ask if they can make it compatible with the Notes graphics card/drivers making it lag free.
This is exactly why virtually all native Samsung apps run fantastic, because their devs know the hardware and drivers hence know how to get full potential.
What would fix this is every time Google releases a version like ICS they should state exactly which hardware will be ALLOWED to run on this platform. But then you lose the openness.
It's a double edged sword, you have to take the good with the bad..
This is unfortunately where apple shines with the iphone because they make the OS and the device. If they just loosened up on their OS a little then we wouldn't be talking here

The Note will ONLY get better with each update/support from either Samsung or our beloved developers.. And that's a one way direction.. O)nly better..
Guys the reason for the lag is the constant downclocking of the cpu to 800 or 500mhz as well as unnecessary services apps running in the background. I believe it can be optimised..

Not really, mines rooted and have uninstalled all uneeded apps. Although adw doesn't lag anymore, other apps do like Facebook and even ES file explorer.
There is a dedicated gpu which isnt utilised for most of the apps which lag, this is the problem at hand.
The iphones been running a sub 1ghz cpu and less than 1gb of ram for long before android adopted them, but doesnt share the same issues.
But as stated it can only get better from here.

Agreed in some respects...
Have you installed AnTuTu CPU master?
I have noticed that when the CPU is operating at 800mhz everything lags.
When I force the CPU to 1400mhz using AnTuTu the lag is present for the first homescreen swipe in ADW EX (DPI 260) then it's smooth as butter.
I have also observed this behaviour in launcher pro.
A guy on here recommended using BetterBatteryStats to possibly locate the apps/background services that are unnecessary hogging the CPU.
Fully agreed on the Iphone performance - but that is clearly due to software strictly tailored for hardware.
Android requires brute force due to software required to work on multiple devices
Gotta say tho my Galaxy Tab 7 (First Gen) with overcome is way faster in general operation than the Note... Until I force the processor to stay at 1400mhz - then it just flies.
Clearly the Note has a lot of potential.

[Q] NOVA Launcher vs Default Launcher

Hi! I installed today Nova Launcher on my nexus 4. What I immediatly noticed is that is smoother than the default launcher... and I was wondering why? I came from an iphone to android and there , if you put a third party theme or a third party anything it's 10 times laggier than the default...
I will kinda like to keep my default launcher cuz I am a little bit of a keep stock everything...
The diferences that I saw is that in my widgets drawer in nova the animation doesn't lag but the images of the widgets appear later... now in default launcher the animation between pages is laggy , sometimes extremely laggy and also the images appear later.
Can someone tell me if I can fix the default launcher to not be laggy?
PS Sometimes in the drawer there is lag when i do the first swipe to go to the next page and then is ok , but the first swipe is laggy
PS2: I already did the trick with disable backround currents sync
nova is pretty much stock, i mean, looks like stock, feels like stock, just with more options to customize, it is best launcher in my opinion. i don't think you can do much to improve your navigating performance, if you already disabled background sync. also, nexus 4 shouldn't be laggy at all, it's one of the fastest phones out there. although, my nexus (with or without nova launcher) sometimes lags in widgets area but i think it's perfectly normal, nothing wrong with that (you should see galaxy s3's performance in widget area, u will feel much better )
Hard reset. I have absolutely no lag when swiping thru the drawer pages.

Click to collapse
besides currents , are there any other backround sync to kill? the one that I have running and I need is the contacts and instant upload
Nova launcher has different speed settings for animations and scrolling. IIRC, nova by default has the speed set to "nova speed" which makes everything feel faster. That may be why it feels like it lags less. For what it's worth, I only use nova launcher on my android devices. All the look and feel of stock with a lot of nice options. Kind of how CM 10 is to stock android.

So , I returned! I hard reseted my nexus 4 and with no luck! Even now , when I do my first swipe when I enter the drawer it is 90% of times laggy and when I get to widgets is the same , sometimes laggy sometimes not
I mean I am a little bit dissapointed , I mean I come from an iphone 4 which has a 1ghz processor , single core and now i have a quad core processor , and I would have expected that the experience is 10 times smoother than on the iphone but I have more lag than I ever had on the iphone. I am not saying android isn't awesome cuz it is but I hate that first laggy scroll and the widgets drawer lag so much that it makes me cranky
