[Q] NOVA Launcher vs Default Launcher - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi! I installed today Nova Launcher on my nexus 4. What I immediatly noticed is that is smoother than the default launcher... and I was wondering why? I came from an iphone to android and there , if you put a third party theme or a third party anything it's 10 times laggier than the default...
I will kinda like to keep my default launcher cuz I am a little bit of a keep stock everything...
The diferences that I saw is that in my widgets drawer in nova the animation doesn't lag but the images of the widgets appear later... now in default launcher the animation between pages is laggy , sometimes extremely laggy and also the images appear later.
Can someone tell me if I can fix the default launcher to not be laggy?
PS Sometimes in the drawer there is lag when i do the first swipe to go to the next page and then is ok , but the first swipe is laggy
PS2: I already did the trick with disable backround currents sync

nova is pretty much stock, i mean, looks like stock, feels like stock, just with more options to customize, it is best launcher in my opinion. i don't think you can do much to improve your navigating performance, if you already disabled background sync. also, nexus 4 shouldn't be laggy at all, it's one of the fastest phones out there. although, my nexus (with or without nova launcher) sometimes lags in widgets area but i think it's perfectly normal, nothing wrong with that (you should see galaxy s3's performance in widget area, u will feel much better )

Hard reset. I have absolutely no lag when swiping thru the drawer pages.

besides currents , are there any other backround sync to kill? the one that I have running and I need is the contacts and instant upload

Nova launcher has different speed settings for animations and scrolling. IIRC, nova by default has the speed set to "nova speed" which makes everything feel faster. That may be why it feels like it lags less. For what it's worth, I only use nova launcher on my android devices. All the look and feel of stock with a lot of nice options. Kind of how CM 10 is to stock android.

So , I returned! I hard reseted my nexus 4 and with no luck! Even now , when I do my first swipe when I enter the drawer it is 90% of times laggy and when I get to widgets is the same , sometimes laggy sometimes not
I mean I am a little bit dissapointed , I mean I come from an iphone 4 which has a 1ghz processor , single core and now i have a quad core processor , and I would have expected that the experience is 10 times smoother than on the iphone but I have more lag than I ever had on the iphone. I am not saying android isn't awesome cuz it is but I hate that first laggy scroll and the widgets drawer lag so much that it makes me cranky

Venting: Why is the homescreen so laggy?

This seems to be such a common problem for android phones and tablets. Even with deodexed, slimmed, optimized roms and overclocked kernels, it just boggles my mind that the homescreen is the slowest part of the android experience. Other apps scroll smoothly and are responsive, but the homescreen is jerky and slow.
Try this: Long click an icon and drag it around the screen. The thing can't follow even a moderately fast-moving finger. And that's just a simple icon moving on a 2d plane. But then, I can run a playstation emulator in 3d without problems.
The same thing has been true on my G1, SGS, Droid Charge, GTab 10.1, and Moto Droid 1.
Am I missing something?
i dunno mayne its the snap to grid that causes it because flipping back and forth from pane to pane is smooth.
Coming from the transformer, this was the first thing i actually noticed. One thing that would help is to change the default wallpaper to one of your own. It actually improves it significantly

I have a Xoom on 3.2 and the home screen is really smooth. I have looked at many Touchwiz videos on Youtube and it seems very laggy compared to my Xoom. But i guess i will soon see it in person, just ordered a GT10.1 3G.
Only reason that your tab or phone are laggy on homescreen is due to either wallpaper or widget,
To fix it get wallpaper wizardrii and set to no scroll.
In regards to the icons well notice that you have additional few more effects when you tap and hold icons, there is stransparency, grid etc. If you want to move icons from app dock to homescreen it shows both at the same time, and homescreen is active not paused.
Ios will never be able to do this there is just to much
At the moment my tab is acting really weird.
My wallpaper is scrolling although it should not, screen is absolutely jitter free all that happened since I've activated kies via wifi and deselected usb debugging (needed it to install drivers)

Can't say mine is laggy at all but I'm not using the stock launcher. The latest "UEKMB" slim Launcher2 with enabled hw acceleration and Multipicture LWP looks and feels extremely smooth. I have no comparison to another Honeycomb Tablet but I can't really see it getting noticeable "smoother".

I have the same problem.... Before the Touchwiz update my homescreen was very laggy, after the update it became less lagy but you can still feel it when scrolling which, I gotta tell you is the most annoying thing... IS there any way to make my homescreen smoother? I've tried wallpaper wizardrii which helped but after awhile the wallpaper cuts in half... I have no more than 5 widgets on my Tab and i'm still amazed on how bad the screen lag is.... I
I'm using ADW Launcher EX, and the screen is super smooth/responsive. The latest version has a high-density option, so we still get the big icons. It's $2 or $3 but it's worth it, and the other thing is to disable the scrolling desktop.
Give it a try. I'm not sure why the stock launcher is so choppy, but they could learn something from the folks who made ADW.
-----
Side note: My current ROM/Kernal is completely stock. No root, no OC, and ADW is still silky smooth. BUT... it was even smoother when I was running my Tab at 1400 with AutoKiller.
Adw launcher is great. I use it on my Xoom & it makes it fly.Try it on the 10.1 & give us some feedback.

I see the lag on my Tab that is described by the OP.
However, I do NOT see it on my HTC Thunderbolt phone running Go Launcher EX.

I just finished installing ADW launcher ex and its A LOT smoother than stock, the transition from landscape to portrait view is still a bit droggy but that's probably because of the widgets. I'm loving the new look ADW gave my tablet.
I too was very frustrated with the homescreen lag on my 10.1. I installed ADW Launcher EX and it has been super smooth and givees you some neat options for homescreen transition effects too. Give it a try.
do a search.
Its because Google has little to no interest in fixing the UI/gpu/hw acceleration issues.
Your phone tablet apps launcher etc have nothing to do with it. Its a fundamental issue with Android that has been ignored and no intention of real fix.

Based on the number of people that just said the stock launcher is laggy, and the aftermarket ones are not, I would say the launcher has quite a lot to do with it.

Who made the stock launcher?... Google...
It is well known that Google cuts corners in relation to standardization and hardware acceleration. Instead the focus on incrementally updating release numbers instead.

Lag and framerate drops happen across the ui not just the launcher. It is an Android problem not anything device specific.
I have a standard (scrolling, but not live) wallpaper, 5 widgets and maybe 30 shortcut icons on my desktop/homescreen. Scrolling from one to another is silky smooth (3.1 TW). On one occasion it was quite laggy, it seemed like it had gone from hw accel'd to software for no obvious reason.... Quick reboot fixed it, though.
While it's probably true some performace issues lie with google, I'd wager most problems lie with users and developers doing things badly (or trying to do too much).
I deleted the social hub widget and my homescreen does not lag at all anymore.

What do you think is the best launcher(ADW Launcher EX?LauncherPro? GO Launcher?)

What do you think is the best launcher for our beloved HD2 Android?
Launcher pro is what I use to use, if you want windows 7 theme back get launcher7.. I don't use anything anymore stock is good for me

My favorite is "ADW Launcher EX". Very fast with many options, although not free.
Zeam launcher, very minimalistic, very customizable and is faster than adw and others.
why don't use all and swicthing with homeswitcher.apk ?
For me go launcher quick easily themed loads of widgets awesome
I've tried all of them and ADW Launcher EX and Go Launcher are best with no force closes but Go Launcher has free widgets unlike Launcher Pro that you have to pay for and it always force closes when you first boot your phone

Well, I don't see the point of switching a launcher every 5 minutes. For me, it is very difficult to decide between GO Launcher EX and LauncherPro. I have 6 or 7 launchers downloaded, and I've narrowed it down to these two, so this thread (if it were to become big) would really help me decide. Currently I'm using GO Launcher, but when I voted I preferred LauncherPro.
LauncherPro PLUS .. I tried ADW EX & GO .. both lacked the feature of my top wanted features which is "smoothness" .. well,, if your screen is clean (no widgets, no scrolling wallpaper, no live wallpaper) all launchers will be smooth .. but when it gets serious like (Live widgets, Live wallpaper, scrolling too, 3D effects) that's when LauncherPro comes in (Plus is only for the widgets ).

Really? I personally have found GO Launcher to cope with widgets, live wallpapers etc better than Launcher Pro. I don't have plus though, too much effort to pay for it when there are decent alternatives.
the only valid votes that would count are for people who have at least tried all 3
i voted Launcher Pro, only because it was smooth and could handle almost anything that the others threw at it
however features wise, the others would win
Depending on what you really prefer,GO Launcher and Launcher Pro would be your best bet. Go Launcher has the most eye candy, and it is as customizable as ADW.In fact, you can take GO Launcher as a spruced up version of ADW. Go Launcher is also slightly zippier and smoother than ADW, however,it lags from time to time, and animations cannot be considered to be as smooth as the ones in Sense. Launcher Pro, on the other hand is really snappy and smooth. The smoothness of scrolling is still unbeatable among third party launchers and it is also very much customizable, although to a less extent than ADW and GO Launcher. You can even get LP Sense UI. And i dare say that it is as smooth and fast as Sense. So its eye candy and customization vs performance and eye candy
best launcher
Best launcher is adw
I've tried every launcher under the sun, many times, and perhaps sadly I always come back to Sense. The main reason is that Ive yet to find decent email widgets (especially ones that work with Exchange) that do the job as cleanly and functionally as Sense. However ADW is my second choice and runs very smooth. I spent a week customising it to work like a beautiful tablet (search YouTube for '3D HD2 UI' to check this out - pure eye candy) but by the time I had added all the widgets I wanted, the slight lag and high battery drain was a bit too much and I went back to Sense which, when tweaked and ran in conjunction with decent SetCpu settings, can be lag-free and low-drainage. LauncherPro is nice but again the lack of email widgets bugged me. GO is nice but a bit cartoonish for me (although I may revisit it to try some new themes).

Nova Launcher - Not So Hot on N7...

I am a HUGE fan of Nova Prime on my GNex. I've tried every launcher out their and I love Nova Prime.
So why does it suck for me on my N7?
Here's what I see:
- Jittery homescreen scrolling
- When set to infinite home screen scrolling, the wallpaper "resets" itself when you cross over the last screen/first screen transition
- In landscape mode, widgets run off the top of the screen
- Really laggy response when touching icons - sometimes the icon never recognizes that it's being selected
- Trying to grab an icon an moving it to the "X" to delete it registers as an up-swipe (related to the point above)
The stock launcher totally smokes Nova Prime, for me. Never thought I'd ever say that! Stock is buttery smooth, no jitters and none of the other issues.
Anyone else see this on their N7? Any suggestions as to how to overcome the jitters/lag? I'd love to love Nova Prime on the N7!

I actually agree with you... Nova just feels.... Clunky... I installed apex last night and it works great

Rooted with stock ROM.

I am running totally stock, unrooted. I thought I might try again with the " aggressive" settings where everything is cached. Maybe that would fix it.
I previously ran Apex on my Gnex for a long time. I might give that a go as well.
Nova is sweet on my N7 stock. Runs super smooth and fast.

Runs OK for me. Not as good as on my phone, but relatively OK. I'd still prefer TSF, but latest versions is buggy with widgets, since they introduced feature that native widgets can be placed anywhere (w/o the grid), the scroll in widgets is really slow. So I said I'd use Nova, since that is what I use on the phone but the truth is it's not as good for tablet. As I said, it works, but I'm not impressed.
I have none of those issues with nova. Neither on my sensation nor on my nexus 7.
Well, running the "aggressive"setting in Nova Prime did nothing.
I tried Apex Pro, and it also stutters, lags a bit.
The stock launcher totally smokes both of these 3rd party launchers - and I've been a Nova and Apex dude forever on my GNex.
Having the opportunity to do a/b comparisons between Nova and stock, Apex and stock back-to-back really highlight the differences, and the advantages of stock, for me at least. Otherwise, there's a chance that Nova/Apex might just look "ok" to me. Stock launcher is super fast, super smooth. My old go-to launchers just don't cut it.

In the wait for final Lollipop version...

We all are waiting for lollipop, but what a lot of people do not realize is a lot of the important news and functions of lollipop will not be included in lollipop.
I can recommend a few things to make your phone more like pure lollipop experience with Mate 7 and kitkat.
1. Install Nova Launcher, this is the best thing I have done ever, this app will give you a highly customizable lollipop experience, the most important aspect I think is the lollipop animations, you will notice this every time you open a app that the animation despite very weak gpu looks and feels a lot faster and smother and beautiful.
Nova Launcher will make all of the microlag of the Huawei launcher to disappear, switching apps goes faster, apps opens in a more beautiful way because the fast lollipop animations which makes the wait not so frustrating...
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.launcher&hl=en
There is plenty of launchers out there but I find Nova the best one I have tried so far..
2. Heads up notifcations is one of the most wanted function in Lollipop this will not be inclucded in Huawei Lollipop for mate 7.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=codes.simen.l50notifications&hl=en
despite it is only notifcations this will bring you amazing increase of multi tasking and also very good for one hand use especially if you put the notifcations in the center, which means you can always reach it with your thumb, whenever you get a kik message and a whatsapp message you can open the app fast with in click.. I recommend using black color and kind of transparent opacity. For even improved mult tasking use C notice together with heads-up app you will se they really complete each other..
I have been the person who have complained most about not getting lollipop but I must say, I do not care anymore, the Nova Launcher has really given the device a total new life, it is much faster then before... no damn micro lag.. apps open faster and more beutiful because of more smooth (but yet fast) animations.

Apex Launcer is really a must have for every M7 owner

In desperate attempts for making this somehwat slow and laggy phone faster and bring it to life I have spent much time trying out different browser.
Most of the more popular launchers today are kind of customizable.
my main focus has been on opening app animations, and how fast apps are opening and if the animations are both FAST and Smooth with no stutter, this is where most launchers fail but where apex succeed, it seem to work very well with the weak gpu of M7. WIth Apex it has become a totally new phone my faster user experience and to switch between apps is a lot faster and the animations finally look good as they should, the animaions I use are Lollipop style animations.
I do not care much of lollipop anymore to be honest I have all what I need now a fast phone thanks to apex laucnher and also heads up notifications thanks to a google play app.. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=codes.simen.l50notifications&hl=en (I recommend using it with black color and kind of a lot of transparency) add c notice https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ccs.notice&hl=en for even better switching between apps and superior multi tasking
When you install the Apex Laucnher what you need to is to go the mange apps in settings then press the default app settings at the bottom to the left then after that set apex laucnher as default, this will mean that when you press the home button on your M7 you will not come back to Huawei laucher but you will come back to apex home screen.
Yes what can I say...I am really surprised that the launcher had so much impact. the biggest problem with the Mate 7 has been opening apps slow, and the animations apex laucnher fix this, and I have tried many laucnhers and Apex is the only one that also have fast animations when opening and switching between app. When it comes to animations in home screen and drawer most lancuhers are fast.. it is when you switch between apps and go back to home screen for instance the the differences are biggest.
Launchers I have tried before coming to this conclusion
APUS Launcher, Nova Launcher, 360 Launcher , go Launcher , action Launcher 3, CM Launcher , Buzz Launcher , Dodol Launcher, Hola Launcher ,

I use no speciel setting besides keeping apex in memory.
.Other parts are more of the appearance. the animations I use I think is default (which is lollipop animation which means apps open from bottom and up)
Otherwise I prefer to use more folders in the home screen since the folders open very fast and does not take much space either when folders are expanded..I prefer that then using the drawer all the time.. I use black background with kind of high transpercy in folders and drawer.
The speed increase you get with default settings.. but there is a lot more settings that affect the appearance.. which is more about taste.

Yeah but compare aphex with nova especially after a few hours of heavy use, you see the nova animations will start to lag after a while, while in aphex they are always consistent. .. one reason might be aphex is not as function packed.. which means it is heavier on the Mate 7.
I use the 2 GB version.

The benifit is faster and more consistent animations, to my eyes is without question faster and more consistent over time.. Nova animations are not as smooth and does not work as fast and consistent on the M7 GPU that is my opinion.. It took me one week of trying all different launchers to realize the difference... my main eye was on how fast and smooth and consistent animations are..
My first thought when install aphex was that it more or less looked like a clone to Nova, but the main advantage seem to be better performance in Apex most likely cause it is more lightweight compared to nova.
Apex has the most well optimized Lollipop animations I have seen.. the animations are such important part of the phone..it have a really impact on the user experience since all you do all day with your phone is mostly switching app constantly..so it is important the it looks good and smooth and lagfree.. Apex is the only launcher that worked good for the Mate 7 2GB model.
Thank you.
I will try Apex when i have some time
Been on Apex for few days, generally liked it but there are better launchers in my opinion. CM launcher is to recommend, definitely brings speed back to Mate 7, it's got some useful tools as well(like antivirus, app protector etc, speed booster). However, if you're really looking for light launcher that is quick on mate 7 Xperia launcher is the choice. My phone is flying now(even on super laggy b312), i've been using Xperia z2 before and i loved it's launcher. It's minimalistic yet super functional, it's very light and clean looking, got great app drawer. There's few versions to download on xda forum( won't find it in play store), however older version seems to work better on Mate7 and has more launcher options and tweaks. Only with this launcher i can see 1 GB free RAM again on lollipop.

I personally prefer Action Launcher, as the 'covers' and 'shutters' are truly useful features that I couldn't do without after spending some time with them. Haven't really used Apex Launcher since the Galaxy S II, as I ran Nova. However, I wanted to try something new when I switched to the Ascend Mate 7, and haven't regretted the decision since. If you're not a fan of a vertically scrolling list of apps, it won't be your cup of tea. The aforementioned covers and shutters definitely merit a glance on the Play Store, though. 11/10 would recommend.
I managed to download xperia z3 launcher. As I've owned previously z ultra this is perfect launcher for me. Simple, elegant and mostly it works better than apex, nova or s launcher. Thanx for the tip.
Where. Can I download Xperia launcher?
Also why does not asus launcher turn up on Google play? When I search?
Asus launcher have very good reviews and their asus phones have very weak intel cpu and low memory despite that all reviewers are vet impressed with the speed and flow of the phone .... I hope asus launcher works with Mate 7

Is one of you know how to keep the "search module" of the Huawei launcher on Apex ? You Know when you solide down and it appears with icons of récent apps ! I really love this feature and i don't want to loose it !
I hope some one can link to the xperia launcher in question, however I am still questionable, the biggest is the difference in opening/switching app animations, if they are not fast and fluid then it means it is not a good optimized launcher, how fast it is in the home screen and drawers are not as important since almost every launcher is fast in this area...
