This seems to be such a common problem for android phones and tablets. Even with deodexed, slimmed, optimized roms and overclocked kernels, it just boggles my mind that the homescreen is the slowest part of the android experience. Other apps scroll smoothly and are responsive, but the homescreen is jerky and slow.
Try this: Long click an icon and drag it around the screen. The thing can't follow even a moderately fast-moving finger. And that's just a simple icon moving on a 2d plane. But then, I can run a playstation emulator in 3d without problems.
The same thing has been true on my G1, SGS, Droid Charge, GTab 10.1, and Moto Droid 1.
Am I missing something?
i dunno mayne its the snap to grid that causes it because flipping back and forth from pane to pane is smooth.
Coming from the transformer, this was the first thing i actually noticed. One thing that would help is to change the default wallpaper to one of your own. It actually improves it significantly

I have a Xoom on 3.2 and the home screen is really smooth. I have looked at many Touchwiz videos on Youtube and it seems very laggy compared to my Xoom. But i guess i will soon see it in person, just ordered a GT10.1 3G.
Only reason that your tab or phone are laggy on homescreen is due to either wallpaper or widget,
To fix it get wallpaper wizardrii and set to no scroll.
In regards to the icons well notice that you have additional few more effects when you tap and hold icons, there is stransparency, grid etc. If you want to move icons from app dock to homescreen it shows both at the same time, and homescreen is active not paused.
Ios will never be able to do this there is just to much
At the moment my tab is acting really weird.
My wallpaper is scrolling although it should not, screen is absolutely jitter free all that happened since I've activated kies via wifi and deselected usb debugging (needed it to install drivers)

Can't say mine is laggy at all but I'm not using the stock launcher. The latest "UEKMB" slim Launcher2 with enabled hw acceleration and Multipicture LWP looks and feels extremely smooth. I have no comparison to another Honeycomb Tablet but I can't really see it getting noticeable "smoother".

I have the same problem.... Before the Touchwiz update my homescreen was very laggy, after the update it became less lagy but you can still feel it when scrolling which, I gotta tell you is the most annoying thing... IS there any way to make my homescreen smoother? I've tried wallpaper wizardrii which helped but after awhile the wallpaper cuts in half... I have no more than 5 widgets on my Tab and i'm still amazed on how bad the screen lag is.... I
I'm using ADW Launcher EX, and the screen is super smooth/responsive. The latest version has a high-density option, so we still get the big icons. It's $2 or $3 but it's worth it, and the other thing is to disable the scrolling desktop.
Give it a try. I'm not sure why the stock launcher is so choppy, but they could learn something from the folks who made ADW.
-----
Side note: My current ROM/Kernal is completely stock. No root, no OC, and ADW is still silky smooth. BUT... it was even smoother when I was running my Tab at 1400 with AutoKiller.
Adw launcher is great. I use it on my Xoom & it makes it fly.Try it on the 10.1 & give us some feedback.

I just finished installing ADW launcher ex and its A LOT smoother than stock, the transition from landscape to portrait view is still a bit droggy but that's probably because of the widgets. I'm loving the new look ADW gave my tablet.
I too was very frustrated with the homescreen lag on my 10.1. I installed ADW Launcher EX and it has been super smooth and givees you some neat options for homescreen transition effects too. Give it a try.
do a search.
Its because Google has little to no interest in fixing the UI/gpu/hw acceleration issues.
Your phone tablet apps launcher etc have nothing to do with it. Its a fundamental issue with Android that has been ignored and no intention of real fix.

Based on the number of people that just said the stock launcher is laggy, and the aftermarket ones are not, I would say the launcher has quite a lot to do with it.

Who made the stock launcher?... Google...
It is well known that Google cuts corners in relation to standardization and hardware acceleration. Instead the focus on incrementally updating release numbers instead.

Lag and framerate drops happen across the ui not just the launcher. It is an Android problem not anything device specific.
I have a standard (scrolling, but not live) wallpaper, 5 widgets and maybe 30 shortcut icons on my desktop/homescreen. Scrolling from one to another is silky smooth (3.1 TW). On one occasion it was quite laggy, it seemed like it had gone from hw accel'd to software for no obvious reason.... Quick reboot fixed it, though.
While it's probably true some performace issues lie with google, I'd wager most problems lie with users and developers doing things badly (or trying to do too much).

So to make my Question short
id like to know to know how well the phone performs after having used for at least 24 hours. I hear People complain about it lagging and being slow when switching homescreens specially if you add TouchWiz3 Widgets????
Im thinking of ordering one but want to hear from you guys. I Really dont support Samsung too much because well, THEY dont support their customers either. They say one thing with updates and promises but at the end they never fullfill their words. Any ideas???
If theres samsung widgets on TW then yes it lags.. I use tw without samsungs widgets and dont get any slowness going on.
I personaly havent seen any slowness yet. But read others do. Maybe im lucky..

yea just use adw launcher or launcher pro. Fast as can be with either of those. But im digging the TW for now without the widgets...
Awesome. Thanks for the replies. i guess ill be picking one up later around 6pm at T-Mobile Corp. Store.
Only Thing i hate is after playing with nexus one, mytouch slide, HD2, i will be missing the Led Flash which i still wonder why they would not add such feauture.
Kinda makes me think its because they want to launch a new phone not too far away and add Flash so people want to upgrade their current phones to that:/
I am using Samsung Widgets in 3 of 5 my screens with no Lag; I find it curious anyone is having lag unless you have like 20 homescreens packed with widgets. The hummingbird processor in this beast has currently edged out all of the top of the line android phones for CPU speed and it also has the fastest GPU (PowerVR SGX540) as well, offering performance of almost 2x compared to the Evo and Nexus. Lag should not be a happening thing
I have had mine since Friday, used it with TW and samsung widgets without issue, but I like the customization from adw so I have been using that for the last couple days. So far I have no complaints about speed, just hoping the gps and compass issues get fixed soon.
I have 3 widgets, one of them being Buddies now and get very little lag. Only the pause when coming back to the home screen (not always happening)

I wish I could say the same. I have one widget, feeds and updates, and when it tries to refresh, it lags like hell. If I add the buddies now widget on another screen, just those 2 tw widgets are enough to make this feel like my original mytouch. Very disappointed in the lag.

I always love ADW because of the options and ESPECIALLY the "Drop to Uninstall" option.
but ADW would be just another program running, using more RAM. less use the better.
Yeah from what I can tell the TWLauncher is pretty light on the battery.
i just got rid of the 7 screens and am just using 1. i am gonna see if this helps with the overall performance of the phone. (from the homescreen> menu (haptic button)>edit> then delete the homescreens to your heart's content . You can always put them back by using the same method

I was running fine for a couple of days and then I started noticing the lag. Selecting the Settings menu would take a couple of seconds. Camera would take a while. I have also had 3 or 4 freezes and had to reboot my phone. Hardly ever happened on the G1 in two years. Would get a black screen for 3-4 seconds in between operations. No spinner. Initially kept thinking the phone was going to sleep.
I have 5 screens with the buddies widget, 2 picture frames, the double daily time widget and Google Search. Shouldn't be causing this hardware to so much as break sweat. I tried removing all widgets. But it didn't help.
What did help was rooting the phone and running the script to move the apps to NAND. But of course there's a limitation on the number of apps. So far, after doing this, it's much better. I'll see if this holds.
The lags have ruined an otherwise outstanding experience on this phone. I'm very disappointed with this performance on this hardware.
What's interesting here is that it's working well for some of you. Which makes it inexplicable why moving the apps to NAND should make such a difference. If this were a problem with the cache, it should have been a problem on every phone. Don't understand this.
The good news is that almost all of the problems I have with the phone should be software fixable.
When it works well, it truly is an amazing device.
I'm very interested in doing the lag fix but I'm intimidated by the process. Is it worth trying to learn ADB? Or should I wait until September for the 2.2 release?

Am I the only person in the world who absolutely hates ADW launcher and thinks that it is absolutely ugly? I'm an avid CM user/updater and I've grown accustomed to their stock-gingerbread with a few tweaks system. I absolutely love the rom.
One thing I cannot stand though is ADW. First of all the launcher is hideous, dragging and dropping icons on the home screen pop up this ugly non-stock looking scroll bar, everything looks samsung-ish oversized for the screen, everything is just gross from an aesthetic standpoint.
Am I the only one who feels like this? lol. Every clean-CM install I go through usually has me re-downloading TI Backup Pro and Root Explorer and completely wiping all of the bloat (ADW, skin chooser, file explorer, etc) and restoring the standard ANDROID bootup.
Anyways, just a "just wondering" comment, love CM to death, thanks to all the devs and their hardwork!
Should've added in - i replace ADW with LauncherPro, the smoothest android launcher on the market, and customize it to look exactly like stock GB (3D drawer, dock & icons, etc).

Agreed!
The first time I used CM7 I absolutely hated it because of ADW, so I ended up using another ROM. I later revisited CM7 and used LauncherPro and it turned from rubbish to fantastic.
With all the different settings on transition speeds, effects and the pure buttery smooth screen transitions you can't go wrong with it. I'm using it now on a Sense ROM.
Agreed. Launcher Pro is far superior.

I've run ADW, LPP, and Go. I prefer Go because of how well it supports folders in the app tray. The folder preview pane is very slick too. LPP's nice widgets considered, and even though I've purchased plus, I still prefer Go.
I love ADW, but you really do have to tweak the settings to get it to run smoothly. Changing the times on screen transitions can make it run quicker then LP.

I know ADW has some sort of open-source licensing where they want Rom dev's to include it as the launcher, but why doesn't Carnales, the dev of LauncherPro license his out or something? I bet 1 in 10 people who try out Cyanogen back away from it just because ADW, not knowing that LauncherPro and GoLauncher are still out there.

If you're going with Go Launcher just because of the App Tray, you might want to download the app "all apps organizer".
I use it with Launcher Pro so that I can better find the apps that I'm looking for instead of the jumbled assortment of apps.
ADW is still much smoother than Sense and pretty much any other stock launcher, but the bounce that I get from it is just icky, and a few other things about it just bugged the hell outta me.

Some people like it, obvious it's just a preference- so no need to criticize those who like it
I was using LPP for a while and switched to GO. Its fast and smooth running chads 2.6.38.6 beta
ADW was the reason I got turned off cyanogen mod when I very first used it, not only was it ugly as sin it also lagged like a mofo. Since I put launcher pro on I haven't ran anything since cyanogen mod and don't plan to for awhile. Hell even the stock launcher blows ADW out if the water.

I, too use LP with CM7. For me, all the other launchers I have tried (ADW, Zeam, GoLauncher) run at 30fps while LP runs at 60fps. Make quite a difference in perceived input lag.
I like ADW. I have it set the way I like it and I think it runs very smooth. but I only have 3 pages and I hide the status bar and dock bar. When I last tried LP I could not find those options, so I have stuck with ADW. I like clean and minimal and LP, I dont think, had the features that I wanted.
But every person has a different experience and a different personal preference. In one respect I agree and think that ROMs should be delivered clean with no bias to apps, but on the other hand I love that it is already there and set up for me . To be honest I am using CM7 because I didnt like some of the apps included in the stock. so if you dont like what is included then try a different ROM.
Thanks CM team for all your hard work and I appreciate the GREAT ROM that you have provided us.

Quite honestly I don't think there is any way to properly benchmark how smooth each launcher runs. However, many of them (ADW included) have a noticeable fps cap if your eye is trained to notice these differences. LP doesn't seem to have this limitation but I don't believe it is running at 60 fps. I'd wager more like 45-50 which is still very high and smooth.

Install your apps to internal, or give the boot an extra couple of minutes to ensure sd card is mounted.
I just got my TF 6 hrs ago and I am not impressed with how smooth the main screens are when scrolling sideways. It looks like it is stuttering. I want it as smooth as my Pyromod G2.
I was hoping that the 3.1 update fixes this but I just got the update and still stuttering.
Is there any solution other than rooting and overclocking to the max. Is there a launcher settings that I can adjust?
My home screen is really smooth. But I am using regular wallpaper and not the live one.
I guess the first thing to do would be to use the same launcher if it's supported on Honeycomb. I like the HC launcher myself. Every now and then it's a little slow when it first gets going or after being off for a while but nothing that effects usability. I guess the issue might be that you're comparing a hacked, customized and tweaked Android 2.x device moving 800x480 pixels to a whole new unmodified factory OS moving 1200x800 pixels so I would sort of expect it to be a little less optimized from the get go.
I'm running the Primordial 3.1 build right now with the OC kernel at 1.4 GHz and everything just moves right along for me.
So might want to start with apples to apples and go from there.
I noticed my Transformer had started feeling really sluggish and I hadn't even installed much. I was rebooting often and it seemed to help a little for a short time. Then I just removed an application I installed recently and wow, performance was smooth again.
That app was TweetCaster Pro, something I grabbed as a free app of the day from the Amazon Appstore. Don't know if it was just that app or maybe some weird combination that didn't like each other. *shrug* But things are a lot smoother. So it might be worth looking at some of your apps, especially those that install background services that like to look for updates frequently.
ADW EX you won't get any smoother than that
For twitter i use Tweetcomb, totally awesome
LauncherPro also runs really smooth on Tegra devices.
Stock Google launchers typically aren't very smooth, especially on a brand new chipset.

It was still a virgin TF but it was not meeting my expectations. Maybe because I am used to a smother one.
Anyway, I installed Launcher Pro Plus, (I remember I purchased this before) and the performance improved a little bit. I wonder if the ADW EX is better.
I really don't want to root this TF but I really crave the smoothness that I find in my G2 so I have no choice but to root it when I get my extra Micro SDHC. BTW, does the new ROMS support/Include ASUS MyCloud, MyNet, .. etc.
Also, I've read that Netflix and Yahoo Messenger Video chat isn't fully working yet.
All in all, other than those intangible (software) shortcomings I still like the TF hardware. Softwares will get fixed soon, but crappy hardware will stay crappy forever in the tablet world.

First of all, I should say, if this topic has already been discussed, then I apologise, and pelase just point me to the right direction. If not, let's get the discussion going!
I started this thread really for 2 reasons. One is to find out for myself (and hopefully for others) which launcher app is more suitable for my needs. And the second one is to have a discussion on the pro's and con's of the different launchers available.
For the GNote as a standard there is the TW launcher of course. I haven't seen any real shortcomings with it. I quite like it. it's clean, smooth and it works.
I am aware of three others: ADW, GO launcher, and launcher pro. I think ADW has a free and a pay version, and I assume the pay version has more features.
I haven't used any of the others on the GNote, and I never used the GO launcher. However, I did use ADW and LauncherPro both on my viewsonic Gtab. On that particular device I found launcher pro more suitable for my needs. Again, it was clean, simple and smooth.
I've never attempted using addons for either, and I am now becoming aware of the different ways to change icons, themes, etc. It'd be interesting to know what can be done with which launchers...

If I'm not mistaken, only the stock TW Launcher has true hardware acceleration thanks to Samsung's work on it. Every other launcher should be software driven (i.e., CPU taxing).

It does not lag at all on my set-up (although transitions are a bit tricky to set up right)
You can have page names (the main thing I wanted)

I personally use now Go Launcher Ex-highly customizable etc...but I recommend you to have a look at the "Post your homescreen" threads where you'll see different types of homescreens and launchers by the users.

On the Gnote this artifice is not necessary anymore, I just have ADW with only one screen and with some tuning I have enough room for my often used apps, two folders and a off off my kid. I even disabled auto rotate. On such a big screen landscape makes no sense for home screen and most apps but pictures and video.

One word: Widgets!
I used to use ADW but it ha gotten too buggy, and it looks like it's not being developed anymore .
These days it's go launcher, but really it's just a place holder until I can load ICS, and the stock launcher

Am I the only one who thinks the none of the launchers are doing it right?
For all I know, TW launcher is the only launcher that uses hardware acceleration. It NEVER lags. Compared to other launchers, I'd stick with it. (I'm on RR v22, ICS for RR v1.6)
TW launcher on ICS for RR looks so much better than stock TW. It makes it bearable. Plus it doesn't lag.
VTL launcher 1.7.0 with left and right docks active, absolutly the more versatile one!

I personally use now Go Launcher Ex-highly customizable etc...but I recommend you to have a look at the "Post your homescreen" threads where you'll see different types of homescreens and launchers by the users.
Another site which is quite good for this is mycolorscreen.com where you'll see different homescreens and normally the Widgets in use with the market link. So you'll be able to learn how to customize your screen on your own

Great site, thanks! Just opened it and found a great homescreen containing several widgets I've been literaly looking for and didn't know they exist. Can't post links yet unfortunately, but you can go have a look and see if it also catches your attention Its on a Note too!

Not that I dislike them, but I'm sure gonna go for as few as I can. Thinking about 2 or so, depends on how many widgets I'm actually gonna need. I don't like to keep scrolling to find what I want.
I installed several launchers and launcher modifiers. Most modifiers sucked. I think they put adware on my phone because once a day or so I get an advert pop up that is not from my provider (I recognise some new type of icons in the notification bar). I uninstalled the launcher modifiers very quickly so I forgot their names. I tried ADW, and so far decided to stick with launcher pro, as it gave me what I needed (customised icons for apps and dock). Anything else wasn't really of interest for me from a functional perspective.
Im using launcher pro on the chinese leak ICS and its so smooth its insane. It looks to be rendering in 60p while using a live wallpaper with absolutely no lag at all. I like the animations and options in it but it is getting a little dated and could do with an upgrade to add some more widgets and functionality.
This was fairly smooth on GB roms pretty much the same as TW launcher but on the ICS leak this flies
You can shrink and zoom all widgets in the paid version from 1x1 to full screen and this works well with nearly every widget I have tried. This is very useful when reducing DPI even though atm I am using the stock 320 incase it breaks something reducing this.
The TW launcher is so low for me when scrolling left and right even though its smooth it just moves across pretty slow, I like to get to where I want quick and launcher pro does this. I havent tried many other launchers lately but tried them all before and keep going back to launcher pro even though it hasnt been updated in a while.
@martcerv: So how is that ICS leak working out for you? Many seem to have problems of all sorts with it...
I have been using spb shell 3d in tablet mode with resizable widgets and for me its the best.
It displays 8 rows x 6 columns and is really suited to the Note. The labels maybe small for some, but not really needed.
For me its the best experience, its compatible with the ICS chainfire release and is very smooth and responsive.
I have adjusted dpi to 213 for better views in gmail etc, but this does not effect shell 3d. At 213 dpi you loose the top bar for some reason, but have put info onto homescreen, see pic

I am a HUGE fan of Nova Prime on my GNex. I've tried every launcher out their and I love Nova Prime.
So why does it suck for me on my N7?
Here's what I see:
- Jittery homescreen scrolling
- When set to infinite home screen scrolling, the wallpaper "resets" itself when you cross over the last screen/first screen transition
- In landscape mode, widgets run off the top of the screen
- Really laggy response when touching icons - sometimes the icon never recognizes that it's being selected
- Trying to grab an icon an moving it to the "X" to delete it registers as an up-swipe (related to the point above)
The stock launcher totally smokes Nova Prime, for me. Never thought I'd ever say that! Stock is buttery smooth, no jitters and none of the other issues.
Anyone else see this on their N7? Any suggestions as to how to overcome the jitters/lag? I'd love to love Nova Prime on the N7!

I dont have any of those issues. Works great.
What ROM are you using?
I actually agree with you... Nova just feels.... Clunky... I installed apex last night and it works great

Working perfect for me. I use it on my S3 as well. I will agree that the stock launcher is really good too. I used it a few days before installing Nova.
Rooted with stock ROM.

I am running totally stock, unrooted. I thought I might try again with the " aggressive" settings where everything is cached. Maybe that would fix it.
I previously ran Apex on my Gnex for a long time. I might give that a go as well.
Nova is sweet on my N7 stock. Runs super smooth and fast.

Runs OK for me. Not as good as on my phone, but relatively OK. I'd still prefer TSF, but latest versions is buggy with widgets, since they introduced feature that native widgets can be placed anywhere (w/o the grid), the scroll in widgets is really slow. So I said I'd use Nova, since that is what I use on the phone but the truth is it's not as good for tablet. As I said, it works, but I'm not impressed.
I have none of those issues with nova. Neither on my sensation nor on my nexus 7.
Well, running the "aggressive"setting in Nova Prime did nothing.
I tried Apex Pro, and it also stutters, lags a bit.
The stock launcher totally smokes both of these 3rd party launchers - and I've been a Nova and Apex dude forever on my GNex.
Having the opportunity to do a/b comparisons between Nova and stock, Apex and stock back-to-back really highlight the differences, and the advantages of stock, for me at least. Otherwise, there's a chance that Nova/Apex might just look "ok" to me. Stock launcher is super fast, super smooth. My old go-to launchers just don't cut it.
