O.k. so last week I took the plunge and and manualnootered (4.6.16) my NC. I liked that I could still have stock B & N programs but have full access to the market. Did have a couple of hiccups (I'm sure to due to my lack of technical skills!) and had to reinstall the sd card. Was using a PNY 8G Class 4 micro sd card (that's all they had at Best Buy). Had to do that app market adjustment first; but then couldn't open my books (they were all greyed out) so I reinstalled.
After fooling around and having fun downloading apps for a couple of days-it seemed to have a bug so I reinstalled again-think it was freezing or something. Then I was up and running again. So I then side loaded a library book (with ADE) and then all hell broke loose. Couldn't access my books (they were all greyed out and when I did try to open them-it was just a blank page). Couldn't access the App market anymore either (just sat there "Loading").
Tried two more times to reinstall the manualnooter; it loaded, but the still the same problems as previously mentioned.
So I thought I would just take the manualnooter out completely and restore to stock 1.2. I followed two part instructions on a complete wipe: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054027
Finished that and then re-registered my NC. I then side loaded the 1.1.0 update and that went fine.
But when I tried to side load the 1.2 update-nothing! NC is not recognizing it. I dropped it directly in the NC (it's the K drive for me) drive just like the 1.1.0 and it is not unzipping it. What's interesting (or maybe it's normal) is that before the stock NC 1.2 was actually showing 2 drives (J & K); and two Autoplay windows opened up. Now it only opens 1 drive though when I go to "Safely Remove Hardware" there are drives (K, L). And when I was side loading the update; I saw the L drive- but there are no files in there like before in the past. And I think this happened before when I originally side loaded the 1.2 update that I ended up dropping it in the other drive (J) to get it to work. But I can't do that on the L drive now- there is nothing in that drive; and when I try it; I get a pop up window stating "Please insert a disk into the drive". That didn't happen in the past. There were NC or B &N files in that 2nd drive.
Tried 1 more time with the 8X reboot and the factory re-set. again 1.1.0 sideloaded just fine-but 1.2 is not recognized.
Also, it is now not recognizing that I have safely removed my hardware. Not getting that pop up on my NC anymore.
So now I am stuck! Have I permanently ruined my NC so now that it will only run on 1.1?
So what screwed it up? The non Sandisk micro sd card? Or the sideloading of a library book? Or did I reinstall the manualnooter too many times?
I'm sorry if this is such a HUGE email- but I was trying to be as specific as possible in describing what happened.
And if anyone can help-please remember I am NOT a techie (as realized by this mess!)-so you will have to give me simple step by step easy to understand directions. Thanks for your time.
Yup, the PNY cards run sloooow and make funny things happen! Stick with sandisk.

I had the same issue. Fixing permissions worked for me.

I have been running CM7.1 RC1 off of my SD card without for about three weeks now.
But today, my NC started freezing often. Sometimes it won't even finish loading the home screen. Additionally, when I make any changes (wallpaper, ADW settings, install apps), the changes/apps are not there after I reboot.
If there are any gurus out there who can help me out, I'd really appreciate it.
Well I would say your sd-card is getting a bit overwhelmed with all the stuff on it what size brand and class is it?
I have a Class 4 16GB Sandisk uSD.
Under storage settings:
SD is listed as Total Space: 13.31 GB, Free Space: 2.13 GB
Internal Storage Total: .93 GB, Available: 574 MB
Additional storage on /mnt/emmc Total: 1.00 GB, Free: 1.00 GB
I also tried deleting 4.55 GB in files is ES File Explorer. But when I restarted, they came back.
To recap: Freezing often; files I delete come back after restart and files I install disappear after restart.
I was getting problems like that after any force close happened -- any settings changes I made would just vanish after rebooting. I had reinstalled CM7 a couple of times and that always seemed to fix it, but something always would creep back again. I finally just installed CM7 to emmc and haven't had a problem since.

I was thinking about that, but since I've been having issues with the screen while plugged in, I wanted to ensure that I don't void the warranty on my NC in case I have to exchange it.
Edit: I also like having the multimedia storybooks to read with the kids.
I've seen enough anecdotes about SD installs suddenly going bad that I wonder if they're stable in the long run, but not enough to convince me that they're not. My SD install did go bad (more conventionally: force closes and lag), but I was already thinking about moving to eMMC, so I just took the plunge. If anything, I might set up a stock 1.2 SD card down the road.

While it wouldn't help with dual-booting, you could also keep a microSD card around to revert it to stock if needed. I thought the latest nook app was supposed to support storybooks, but it gave me an "unsupported" error when trying to open an "enhanced" book, so I don't have much personal experience.

Yeah, it seems like this is an unspoken problem here. I'm not sure how prevalent it is, but when you do mention weird behavior when using an SD card, usually someone will suggest moving to emmc or say they had a similar issue when they were using an SD card as well.
Well, I went ahead and put Phiremod 6.3 on Emmc. No issues yet...
I had to buy a new SD card. The one I had CM7 on was completely locked up. I couldn't delete, save or even format it.
Thanks to everyone for the advice!
Use MiniTool Wizard or EASUS (or whatever) to format the uSD card
I recently ran into a problem when I was trying to transfer 13GB of Music to my EVO running MIUI. I had the phone hooked via USB cable to my laptop and was only seeing about 800k/s in transfer speeds on a class 4 micro sd card. Eff that I say.
So I did some digging and this seems to be a known issue with AOSP roms with no real fix.
There are a couple work arounds though.
1. Turn off the phone and pull the card to transfer directly.. this sucks.
2. Reboot into recovery mode and mount the sd card. This still sucks.
3. (This is what I did) Install "Dual Mount SD" from the market. I think there's a similar version that's free but the reviews weren't that great. This will allow your phone keep the sdcard mounted in Android and allow your computer to mount it too. The app has a setting that will force Android to rescan the card when you unmount from the computer. This work around get's me back up to the expected 3.8Mb/s transfer on the micro sd card.
Hope this helps someone else out there.
Its the version of Linux they use for the kernels which causes the issue. I'm not sure which kernel doesn't do this (I want to say it was savaged-zen) not possitive but with that kernel the speed vamp up to what you would expect.
It could be any kernel but I have only used savaged-zen, tiamat, and godmode. So one of those is the key to faster transfer speed. Figured I throw that out there, goes with your post

I'm running tiamat 4.0.8 and still see the issue.
I'm using GoDm0dE and have pretty fast data transfers don't remember the speeds from my last backup but 7gb only took about 3mins or so to transfer
Edit: I'm gonna be backing up my card later tonight or tomorrow so I will note my xfer speeds and post em here when I'm done
Running tiamat and seeing this getting about 1.1 mb a second which really is bs
I had this problem also..A while back I ran into a topic where someone found a fix on the cyanogen bug tracker or something.
I really can't remember but I can tell you flashing these two files worked for me on every cm7 variant I ran. I didn't notice any bad effects and have no idea what it changes but it works.

Yeah because turning your phone off then opening it then removing the battery then removing the SD card then putting it in an adapter then transferring then all that in reverse is faster than 1.1 mbs lol

Hi, do you know if this would work with Deck's 1.3 [2.3.7]? I'm having terrible speeds, my only "fix" thus far was rebooting into recovery and mounting usb from there. That gives me around 2x the speed.
TIA
I've posted this in two separate forums in the hopes of finding an answer. After much searching and reading i've noticed a few others with similar issues, but with no answers. Heres my problem: I've installed cm-10.1.2-encore.zip and gapps-jb-20130812-signed.zip on my Nook Color with TWRP and everything seemed to work fine. Once i tried D/Ling apps from the store though i ran into the SD card error. Found the info saying to unmount, install app, then remount and that seemed to work. However i now realize that i've run into a larger issue with the SD card being marked as read only. It an 8gb Kingston that has served me well. The Nook seems to randomly decide that its now read only and when viewed under storage it will often show the card as either full or with an impossible amount of data (32.27 GB out of 7.4GB used). This is causing numerous problems with apps that are demanding to use the SD card and also with the Barnes and Noble Nook app which opens and keeps force restarting. I get only get glimpses of the error message and i think it says something about "sd card is full or corrupted. I've also noticed a couple of times that my sd card had garbled looking files on it that made no sense, weird characters and all. When the SD goes read only i can't do anything to it unless i remove it from the Nook, then it seems to function fine. Connecting with the cable and trying to write to it only gives me an error message about it having "stopped". Please, can anyone help me with this? Is it my card or something else? And i have tried SDformatter, ROM Manager, and multiple reformats to fix it.

More data......
On a second note, all was supposedly working well this morning until i tried to access a pdf text book. It told me that it couldn't open it so i plugged my nook into the computer and found tons of garbled/corrupted files on the sd card. Is the Nook or software doing this somehow? These files are garbled names/extension and all zero bit.
Sounds like a busted microSD card. Try using another one.

Thank you so much! I went out a bought a SanDisk 8gb Class 10 and it seems to be working flawlessly!
Lesson learned, and a bit of new info for those out there with similar issues: You MUST use a SanDisk, and the class 10s will word as well as the class 4s.
Thanks again Leapinlar, I knew I could count on your advice.
Thanks, I also just hit this. I just rebuilt my old Nook Color for my daughter to use, with CM10.2. Weird things where happening like when I tried to download the amazon app store app, Chrome browser just refused with a little message briefly saying "no SD Card". I eventually found this post and tried formatting another micro sd card and everything is working. You posting this message really helped. Thanks.

How do you keep it from showing up.
I think there is a problem with the SD card reader. That notification means that the SD card unmounted and re-mounted itself. So it thinks you just inserted the SD card.

the adoptable storage was a blow, but at least we can still install apps on the micro sd.
Om thinking of moving to this device from the Note 4 which I love but was getting these chronic dismounts w a Samsung 64 gb evo class 10 sdhc, lss, the card was bad after less than 2 years, have an ancient 1gb sandisk class 6 in it temporarily and no issues. Now Handset will not be recognized on any pc as usb mtp just charging. I think its the micro usb jack, even though its had minimal use bc I wirelessly charge, didnt first year. I think that is a poor protocol as it adds a vunerable vector for all kinds of headaches. Anyhoo how would you guys compare the 2 phones? Removable memory is non negotiable for me as was removable battery, but I'm willing to forgo the latter for this form factor. Im a heavy user, gamer WOT Blitz addict. Sorry if I derailed a bit.

I rebooted and it hasn't showed up since the first day it ever showed up
Adoptable storage came at the urging of Google. LG G5 doesn't have it either. Adoptable storage was memory for devices with low storage amounts. Presumably, 32GB isn't considered low storage.
Mine keeps doing it. When trying to put music on the sd card, it will keep saying sd has stopped working. Brand new sandisk ultra memory card too. Will work until I set the phone down and phone shakes a little. Will not play music on sd card either.
---------- Post added at 01:03 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:57 AM ----------
I took the ultra card out and put in a $6 128 GB card and it works now.
My note 4 is 32 gig and I get low mem warnings if I dont load apps pics music movies to an sdhc. Expandable storage is always a plus.

If you guys are getting the message. Turn off your phone and reseat the SD card then turn it back on.
I stuck a piece of tape to hold the SD card in place and create a fine extra layer. Haven't had the notification in 6 hours. Used to get it once an hour or so.
My SD card notification keeps showing up no matter if I swipe it away. It shows up about every 20 minutes

Done that. Even got a new SD card and reseated it and still does it.
Mine does come every few hours, 5 or 6, not too bad, but would prefer this is not happening, as it seems like the sd cards are like inserted and ejected improperly, I'm afraid this will bring damage or problems with the sd cards later on.
Mine comes every reboot. Annoying.

This is the intended behavior, if it didn't show at boot time, that would indicate no sd card is present. The ones seeing it randomly throughout the day are the ones with issues. Either the issue is the card is not seated properly, the card is damaged (or contains corrupt media files), or there is something physically wrong with the phones. It is showing this because it believes the card was removed and reinserted. I have not seen it, except after booting, and I have had a card in it since day one.

Disabling the notification does nothing to help these people solve the actual problem. If the device is unmounting the sd card randomly, there is a problem. Imagine you were recording a movie to the sd card, and it disappeared from the system, not only would you lose your video, most likely the phone woukd crash and massive corruption would occur on the sd. There is a great potential for data loss here, in fact some may already be occurring. No file system likes to be uncleanly dismounted repeatedly, eventually corruption occurs.
I just bought my moto x pure edition 2 days ago everything was working fine until today everything was going slow it would take at least 5 seconds to open a app and as soon as i open it it would force close. Could be an app that you installed that either you never opened until now or one that you installed recently. You could try to boot into safe mode and see if it improves.
Safe mode: With the phone on, press the power button. Hold the Power off toast to get to safe mode.

I thinking it was the facebook app but it didnt start doing it until i downloaded nova launcher and adding themes
Ugh, Facebook has caused more problems with my phones. My last phone was an S5 and by the end Facebook took like 5 minutes to install and sometimes after all that never really installed or jacked up the phone really bad. I had hoped with the all but pure Android experience with the Moto x pure edition it would work better, but it still takes awhile and it drinks battery while installing.

If factory reset didn't solve your issue then the phone could be defective. Did you buy from a store such as Best Buy? If so and the store purchased from has a return policy (I.e. Best Buy is 14 days) then take it back to the store as they will most likely give you a new unit on the spot. Otherwise you have to deal with Motorola warranty support which takes time.
Have you got your sdcard set to internal? Move the apps that are slow back to internal of that's the case.
---------- Post added at 02:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:32 PM ----------
Once you have set sdcard to internal everything you install after that gets put on the sdcard and if your sdcard isn't a rapid U3 sdcard you'll get lag with the apps, so go into storage click on sdcard then click apps and lets say Facebook is there click it then click change and move from sdcard to internal.
---------- Post added at 02:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:35 PM ----------
Some of the apps like games are fine on the sdcard as they load into ram so don't usually slow down but stuff like twitter, Facebook and Instagram use the cache which is located on mem.
I figured it out after I took it back and got an exchange. The brand new SD card I bought about a month ago the phone said it was low performance and would make apps act up. Not sure why. It worked fine on my lg v10 guess I'll have to get a better one lol
Unless you need to absolutely expand your storage for apps and cache, don't format the SD card to use as internal storage. U3 SD cards are expensive (unless you find a good sale) and for the price it is cheaper to upgrade your phone to the higher storage capacity.
