Has anyone written a nice Newb overview of what this is?
There's bits all over the place but I really havent got the foggiest what it is. I read about partitions and .zip files etc etc but I cant find a nice Newb overview. Yes, I've found the CWM thread explaining how to install it but not what it's really for.
Is it an alternative to MAGLDR? Does it do more/less?? Why do I need partitions? Why is the SD card involved. Can it take 2 NANDS? All this seems to be touched on in various areas but it's hard to assimilate all the info.
Could someone either point me to the nice Newb overview or even write one!
Thanks
It allows you to backup, restore your data from nand and flash Roms from SD Card. I don't need it because the rom that I am using allows me to backup my data via Magldr. But if you like testing different roms or you update ur roms but your data gets erased everytime, Clockworkmod is for you.
Also If you install it, it will erase your nand. So if you had an android rom on your phone you will need to reflash it through SD because flashing through USB will mess up Clockworkmod, therefore you would have to reflash Clockworkmod.
With the SD card two file types are stored which allows clockworkmod to work. Think of it as a program data that is needed for Clockworkmod to fuction. Backing up Nand (Android) using clockworkmod will restore the operating system, settings and apps. Its like using System Restore on a PC. You can also choose between backing up your apps or your entire System.
I think you should wait because Magldr 1.12 will be released soon and if I can recall, it features a Recovery option.
Hope this helps in someway.

Thanks. And I'm assuming you use all the 'old' Roms for CWM rather than the NAND builds?

Already explained above, but CWM is for NAND builds.
Could still do with an explanation in the 'how to flash everything' guide. This thing took off and there's very little for newbs.
There are many guides...you are looking in the wrong place. Look in the Android Nand Forum.
Here is a link to one of them: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893948
Well it's not written in the main guide. There bits and pieces throughout that thread but nothing explains what it really is, and more importantly its pros/cons/limitations.
Anyway, I'm certainly not on my high horse about this, would just be very grateful if someone could take the time to write a step by step guide. This site is great for newbs but I feel this has been overlooked.
AFAIK ClockWork must be flashed into nand to work properly. Also using it I can't flash via USB/DAF because I'll lost CWR. Is any posibility to make it work from file(s) on FAT32 formatted SD card like in some other android phones (in Samsung's Galaxy I7500 Nandroid we need only 2 files in SD and proper bootloader to make it working well - there is no posibility to kill Nandroid during ROM flash). We'll get easy way to test diffirent ROMs with fast option to restore our daily use build without looking only for ZIP ROMs.
Im just wondering what the best way to change WP7 roms is
should i do a task 29 and reflash everything or can i just flash straight over
also should i format my sd card first and then flash or do i not need to
i want to change roms so the chevrons built in but my current
rom is pretty stable and i dont want to cause any problems

When you flash WP7 it will wipe your SD card. You could try copying the WP7 partition to another SD card if you have one, flash and then delete newly created partition, copy the partition back to the card you are using. Not sure if it will work though and you will need a partition manager like Minitool Partition Manager or Easeus Partition Manager, both are free.

thanks for your reply but i realise my memory card will be wiped just wanted to know if i should wipe everything myself to get a clean flash as with windows 6.5 i used to get problems if i didn't use task 29. But if its not needed it would save me alot of time
I just like to know what the best way is to go about things to avoid unnecessary problems as reported by other users
Hi.
After getting my HD2 last week I tentatively but successfully flashed my first ROM, which was the Rafdroid 4.0.2.
I had correct radio.
I installed HSPL 2.08.
I installed MAGLDR 1.13
I got the Rafdroid ZIP file
Prepared SD card with Primary Partition and 1GB ext3 partition.
Downloaded the 400MB CWM partition and flashed to HD2
Then installed the Rafdroid Zip from SD card via CWM.
Everything seemed to go fine and I've been using the Rafdroid for a week. But now I want to try a new ROM, specifically the NexusHD2-Gingerbread V2.7 ROM.
Now I'am a bit unsure on how best to proceed still being new to the world of NAND. A few things in the Nexus ROM thread confuse me.
Installing CWM_Recovery_for_NexusHD2 (135MB system and 2MB cache)
Does this mean I need to reflash to CWM partiton size 1.3v 150MB? I'm unsure what the 2MB cache means.
Enter ClockworkMod Recovery when you're on MAGLDR 1.13 (hold "Power" button during boot) and select "AD Recovery" or "Boot AD SD" (if ever copied CWM's initrd.gz and zImage to SD).
The first part of this I understand but I don't know what the bold bit is. Do I need to copy these files to my sd card? I didn't do anything like this when I flashed Rafdoid.
Thanks for your time. Hopefully a few pointers can get me on my way
Yes, reflash cwm but with a different partition layout.
(look in cwm folder find flash.cfg, open it in notepad, you will see the numbers to change)
The bit in bold - ignore that, there are two types of cwm, one that installs to the nand, like you have, and one that runs from sd, so ignore the sd bit.
So,
Into magldr,,
usb flashing,,,
flash the new layout with the sizes the rom suggests, (you can tinker with your own sizes as you get used to changing, it's the system size that is important, a few meg bigger than the unzipped size of the system folder in the rom.zip)
When that completes, back into magldr,
Ad recovery (option 8 I think) to boot cwm, and flash the rom.
You can set the system size to what you like, so long as it is bigger than the roms system folder, but anything over is wasted, it doesn't count towards internal storage, so if the rom says 135 and you flash 150 layout, there is 15meg wasted space. (that being said, 150 is a good size to use, since quite a few roms use that or smaller,, sense free roms will mostly all fit in 150 layouts,) meaning you can switch between them without flashing cwm again. Also means you can restore cwm backups from any of them into that layout, so you can set one up, take backup, flash another, take backup, flash a third, then any time restore either of the backups.
Use flash.cfg to change partition.. Btw. I read in NexusHD rom topic you need to flash 135MB system and 2MB cache.
About the second problem:
Just make sure you have zipped rom on your sd card, enter MAGLDR, select AD Recovery and flash zip.
I think the second way is possible if you manually copy those files, never tried it.
Hi Sam and volv.
Many thanks for taking the time to answer my queries!
Should I get rid of the Rafdroid sd card layout and just re format the card to FAT32? I don't think I'll be going back to it.
Another thing about the backup - where are they stored - in the NAND memory or on the sd card for loading back into NAND?
Everything else you've posted has been very clear and super helpful. I'll definitely be a lot more confident at flashing the ROM tomorrow!
Thank you.

Hi,
Before starting anything,BACKUP YOUR STUFF.
Go to ad recovery>backup and restore and make a backup of your current system and data. This is stored on your sd card in clockworkmod/backup.
Next ,flash your new partition.
Then go to ad recovery and wipe data, cache partition, and dalvik(advanced)
Then go back and choose install zip from sd card(having placed your new ROM zip on the root of your sd card using a card reader)
Most roms support using the ext partition, so definitely keep it.
Before you flash, in cwm, do a 'wipe data/factory reset','wipe cache', and then 'advanced - wipe dalvik cache'. This will clear out the data and such from the previous rom, so no need to format it. (there may be some leftover folders from certain apps in the fat32 partition, you can manually delete them as and if necessary, shouldnt cause any problems)
backups get saved to the sd card, in a folder called clockwork, so be sure and back that up if you plan on formatting your sd card.
Hi again.
I just want to say the flash went like clockwork (no pun intended ) The NexusHD ROM has a really nice feel to it. Its my first taste of stock Android and I like it.
I was going to sell the HD2 and keep my old Hero, but I'm not so sure now after trying NEXUS HD ROM.
Hmmn decisions decisions.
Once again thanks for all your help. It definitely filled in the missing blanks.
Ta Ta
you can use every flash.cfg and change the values to the needet. Run the flash tool and after that flash the zip via recovery
Hi there,
I successfully flashed an Android 4.2.1 Native SD ROM on the HD2's NAND (TimeJelly). This is the procedure I followed (coming from a complete erase of the phone's NAND, as the result of a failed previous attempt, lol):
Flashed HSPL 2.08
Flashed Radio compatible with 576 MB of ram (12.xx.50.xx if I recall correctly)
Flashed MAGDLR 1.13
Flashed CWM 6.0
Flashed the ROM from CWM by choosing zip from sd card.
And everything is good and working. But, I used one friend's SD to flash (since I still don't have one)... Now, I'd like to swap out the SD I used to flash (I understand it did automatically create an Ext4 partition on it?) and use the one I'll buy tomorrow.
What do I have to do? Without the SD the phone will just refuse to boot, stucking at the green HTC logo. Do I just have to partition the new SD from CWM? Do I have to flash everything again? (Jeeeeez).
I understand the EXT4 partition would be used only for the data, since it is stated Data2Ext in the ROM's title. ROM is in the NAND with DATA2EXT (the exact option I chose during installation, second one).
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated

If I understand correctly you want to move your sd content/installation to a new card, yes?
Go to the sd card thread in my signature and read post # 2. Specifically the part about backing up and restoring an sd card image.

Nono, I just installed a native sd ROM on the phone's NAND, and now it will simply not boot without an EXT4 formatted SD (because the /data partition is there, not on the NAND).
I repartitioned the SD from CWM this morning choosing 2 GB of EXT partition, and 2 GB of FAT32 partition, and everything is working. But, there's another problem. Whenever I reboot the phone, it will simply lose EVERY single setting, and it prompts me again to choose the language, google accounts ecc...
Any help?

no you didnt, , a nativeSD rom lives in the EXT partition, If you installed a rom to nand, then its a nand rom. If you install it to teh FAT partition, its an SD rom, if you install it to the sd-ext, its a nativeSD rom.

no, you must create the ext partitions yourself.
Sounds to me like you have a nand rom, which is also using dataonext, , meaning teh rom lives on Nand, and the data partition is mounted onto the sd-ext, , in which case.....
into CWM - full backup
new sd card into phone
into cwm - create ext partition on new sd card
in cwm - selectively restore ONLY the sd-ext partition (you will need to have coppied over the fat32/clockwork/backups folder from the old card to teh new card)
reboot.

The SD card image backup would, essentially, duplicate a card in entirety, all partitions included.

i didn't say anything about an sd card backup, i said do a full cwm backup, which includes the system, data, boot and sd ext partitions, and not the fat32 partition, and then restore only the sdext partition to the new card (after of course creating teh new ext partition on teh new card)
